Guys store today! CSUNATC24 Interview: Amos Miller of Glidance We have discussed various mobility enhancements for years on the podcast. However, it looks like we may now have the real deal on the horizon from the person behind Microsoft Soundscape. Amos Miller, CEO of Glidance, spoke to JJ from the Exhibit Hall floor about the new mobility aid. This device aims to be the first in what Amos calls intelligent Guides that can assist the existing skills of a cane or Service Animal user. The device utilizes a series of cameras, radar and on device chips to process travel faster than reliance on a current day cell phone. This speed of calculation allows the user to navigate and compensate quicker in challenging environments. Tune in, or read the transcript, to learn how Amos feels about how Glidance can work alongside various navigation apps to provide even greater flexibility when it comes to orientation and mobility. Pre-orders for Glidance are planned for the Spring of 2024 with a possible launch window in early 2025. To learn more, and hear a described video about the unit, visit the official Glidance website.

Today on the show, Steven and Shaun review the big stories this week in accessible tech news. First up, there's a demo from Michael Babcock - who hosts the UnMute Presents podcast - of the new app, called OpenScape, that's like a GPS for the blind and partially sighted community and replaces the popular Microsoft Soundscape app. There's also discussion about how Reddit is charging third-party apps big bucks, and people aren't happy about it. Samuel Proulx is a mod on the R/Blind subreddit and talks about the reports that accessibility-focused apps might get a pass, but is this good news? There's also an exclusive interview from Double Tap TV's Marc Aflalo, who talks to the founder of a mental health app called Rootd, and there's a demo of how listener Negative Julian identifies his clothes using NFC tags. Today on the show, Steven and Shaun talk about the breaking news over the weekend that a group of developers have come up with an alternative to the much-loved Microsoft SoundScape app, called OpenScape. The new app is in a beta phase and is slowly being rolled out to people who want to take part in order to give feedback. At the time of recording the beta program was full, but the developer told Double Tap that it would open up again “in the coming days.” Double Tap correspondent Michael Babcock sent in an early demo of the new app in action. Follow this link to access the beta when more spaces become available: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Y6Cj2cLk Also, protests have begun within the Reddit community after the company decided to bring in what some are calling "exorbitant" fees for third parties to access their APIs, meaning developers of apps that give people access to Reddit would have to pay large fees to do so. Despite the disabled community appearing to get a pass following comments by the company's CEO, long-time moderator of the r/Blind subreddit, Samuel Proulx, told Double Tap that all was not as it seemed as he joins Steven and Shaun for an in-depth look at the story. Read more about the Reddit protest here: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/12/23755974/reddit-subreddits-going-dark-private-protest-api-changes And of course, there is more of your feedback including comments regarding the Freestyle Libre app that listener CC from Montreal has been having issues with. And we get into the nitty-gritty of some cool tech updates. If you've got the Hable One Braille input keyboard, you'll want to tune in for Shaun Preece's tips on updating your device. We're also reviewing the official ChatGPT app from Open AI, which just launched in 40 new countries, courtesy of Thomas Domville, also known as Anonymous. We also bring up our earlier discussion this week on the quality of audio description with blind journalist and advocate Robert Kingett. It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show. Pinch hitting for Ed is Joe Steinkamp who joins Brian and Allison in the virtual studio to discuss all the latest greatest tech news. It's the hundred year anniversary of the white cane . Is it time for a robotic cane, and would you trust it? Twitter is developing a pop up to warn people who are too stupid to realize they are about to get in to a Twitter beef! GoodMaps is now free on both iOS and Android. The app is off to a good start with outdoor mapping, but the future could be in indoor mapping. Our conversation strolls in to some of our other favorite navigation apps including Blind Square GPS, Google Maps, Lazarillo, Microsoft Soundscape, and a mention of Apple Maps. Because we have Joe here, we figured we would speak a little Microsoft, it also helped that Microsoft had a slew of announcements over the past few weeks. Have you installed Windows 11 yet? Joe explains to us some of the new designs to Windows 11. We then jump in to Microsoft's version of the iPad and mass confusion the name of all the Surface devices. And yes, after hearing Joe explain them all, Brian felt like his head was going to explode. If the Surface line wasn't confusing enough, try figuring out all the different Microsoft Office packages now available. Our favorite is the Ewok Office. We have some nostalgia on the show this week as we are interviewing the legendary Adam Curry. Yes, the PodFather – co-inventor of podcasting. Jan and Sjeff are beside themselves with excitement because Adam is their favourite DJ/MTV VJ. Adam talks to us about his life growing up in the Netherlands, his new life in Texas and all about Podcasting 2.0 and his No Agenda podcast. We asked Jade McCormack to give us a demo of Microsoft Soundscape. Perhaps she can help Stuart find his way home so he can get to that piano for the email jingle. (Boo to the new jingle - Óran) We have news on a new podcast from HIMS called Sensecast and we've got an email question asking the Blind Guys about their favourite music. Does Jan really dislike Run DMC?! And as for Stuart, The Lighthouse Family, really Stuart?!! We've also got info on the Greenwich Docklands International Festival So come on - kick off your shoes, whip off your bra, put on a pot of coffee, and give Blind Guys Chat a whirl!
On the show this week we find out about Sight Tech Global 2021, an event focusing on AI and the future of accessibility for people who are blind or visually impaired. Hi Mosen At largers. Wow, where did that time go? It was 20 years ago today that I pushed the button to launch ACB Radio and begin working with some great Internet radio pioneers. If you'd like to read an account of how ACB Radio got started and some memories of the building of the station in those early days, you can download my free ebook on The Mosen Consulting site. People have been buying up tiles in black Friday sales, so we talk about the accessibility of the Tile app. I hope you, your friends, your family and even your enemies will cast your vote for the top 10 holiday songs. You can vote here and I explain this cool tradition in the podcast. Voting gets you an exclusive invitation to our Christmas party. Are you frustrated by focus issues after deleting mail in iOS 13? Well if it's any comfort, you're not alone. A listener shares his experience of MFI cochlea implants in iOS 13, and asks how other blind cochlea implants are getting on in general. What's the most memorable Christmas gift you've ever been given and why? I tell you about a cool app I recently learned about called Music Harbour, and is nothing sacred? Pentatonix and the London Symphony Orchestra, by the miracle of digital technology, are working with Bing Crosby on one of the most iconic Christmas songs. I bring you a review of Ulysses, a word processor app which in conjunction with all the new content creation features for VoiceOver in iOS 13 has radically changed the way I create content. Bonnie is here with her bulletin. A listener is looking for recommendations of exercise equipment with accessible iOS apps. A listener reports on how well Microsoft Soundscape now works with Bose Frames. All this and much more.
Get Together with Technology (GTT) Sponsored by the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) GTT is an exciting initiative of the Canadian Council of the Blind, founded in Ottawa in 2011 by Kim Kilpatrick and Ellen Goodman. GTT aims to help people who are blind or have low vision in their exploration of low vision and blindness related access technology. Through involvement with GTT participants can learn from and discuss assistive technology with others walking the same path of discovery. GTT is made up of blindness related assistive technology users, and those who have an interest in using assistive technology designed to help blind and vision impaired people level the playing field. GTT groups interact through social media, and periodically meet in-person or by teleconference to share their passions for assistive technology and to learn what others can offer from their individual perspectives. Show Notes: August 28, 2019 Microsoft Soundscape A map delivered in 3D sound by Microsoft Corporation Microsoft Soundscape was recently released in Canada in both official languages, Canadian French and English. You can download Soundscape free for iOS from the App Store here. Presenting over the Zoom Conference to the GTT New Westminster group were Amos Miller, the Product Manager for Microsoft Soundscape Research in Redmond WA, and Jarnail Chudge, a technology designer and user experience expert on the team. Microsoft Soundscape uses 3D audio technology to enhance your awareness of what is around you, and thereby help you get around and explore your surroundings. Soundscape will place audio cues and labels in 3D space such that they sound like they are coming from the direction of the points of interest, parks, roads and other features in your surroundings. You will need a pair of stereo headsets that you feel comfortable wearing outdoors. For example, bone conduction headsets, Apple AirPods and in-ear open headphones have proven to work well. Soundscape is designed to live in the background and provide you with effortless ambient awareness. Therefore, feel free to use it in conjunction with other apps such as podcasts, audio books, email and even GPS navigation. Key features: - As you walk, Soundscape will automatically call out the key points of interest, roads and intersections that you pass. These can be adjusted and turned on and off. - An audio beacon can be placed on a point of interest, and you will hear it as you move around. You can place an audio beacon on a point of interest that you would like to track such as your destination, a point to return to or a landmark you are familiar with. - “My Location” describes your current location and the direction you are facing. - "Nearby Markers" describes nearby places you have marked. - “Around Me” describes nearby points of interest in each of the four cardinal directions, helping with orientation. Try this out when getting off a bus or leaving a train station. - “Ahead of Me” describes points of interest in front of you, for example when walking down the street. - The expandable Callout History section lets you review callouts you have heard, repeat callouts, hear more information about them, and more. We hope you enjoy the experience. We believe that this kind of technology offers a new way to relate to the environment around you and we can't wait to hear what you make of it. If at any time you have any questions about Soundscape, please refer to the Help & Tutorials section available on the main menu or if you require further help then you can contact the Disability Answer Desk on 1-800-936-5900 which is a free of charge service. This work started out in 2010/2011 when Amos was still in the UK. He was involved with the local guide dog organization there, and working with them to try and figure out how technology can integrate into our own independence and mobility when we're out and about, but in a way that enhances that experience. Some people from Microsoft started working with mobility instructors, and guide dog and cane users. We explored a range of ideas long before we figured out how to solve the problem. We landed on this notion of how important it is to enhance the awareness, but not tell the person what to do in that space. A lot of what orientation and mobility trainers will do with us is to work on a specific route, but especially how to perceive the environment, how we read the cues that the environment is giving us from a sound perspective, echo location, traffic noise, direction of the wind, the tactile feeling of the ground: all of the signals we can get from the environment in order to orient, and make good navigational decisions. The work that we did with Guide Dogs in the early days of Soundscape was really to see how we can build on that. The idea of sound playing a big role in the perception of the space, was really how this idea evolved. Soundscape as an ap, is the first incarnation of that idea. The ap is free, and available from the Ap Store. It does rely on map data, and so it does need to be able to access that data. For the most part, it will download the necessary data from the environment that you're in, and from that point forward it's not using data. So it's not constantly drawing on your data plan, but it does require one. We've tried to optimize it so that the data usage is minimal, and in certain situations, it will also work in areas where there is no data. Bose frames are a very good way to get the stereo effect, as are Bone conducting headphones. EarPods or standard headphones will work, but they will block your ears to ambient sound. Putting it in one ear to keep the other ear free won't be effective because you won't get the signature 3D effect. Amos said that he personally likes EarPods because of their sound quality, and it's possible to insert them lightly into the ear and still have ambient sound. Some sports headphones are a good solution too, Plantronics for example. This type of headphone rests around the back of your neck, and clips over the ear. They sit in front of the ear canal without blocking it. They're used commonly by runners and cyclists. Users can email soundscapefeed@microsoft.com and that comes to the Microsoft Soundscape team. There is also a feedback button in the ap itself. Microsoft’s Soundscape App Creates a 3D Audio Map to Enhance Your Exploration Jeff Thompson gives us a overview of the Soundscape App from Microsoft. Running through the menus and settings and locating reference points as well as near-by bus stops. Here is what Microsoft has to say about their new Soundscape App: When you’re ready, just go for a walk on a well-known route and listen to the callouts to get a sense of how Soundscape works and how you may want to use it.
