In recent years, conservatives are more actively trying to get books pulled from libraries. The ten most challenged books from 2024 were all targeted from the political right. Kyra has successfully integrated a comprehensive nature-based learning (NBL) program into a PreK-8th grade public school setting. You can follow Kyra on Instagram to stay updated on her initiatives and insights.Email: Kyra.Stephenson@rcsdk12.org School website:  https://www.rcsdk12.org/12 Instagram: kls_natureed Purpose – How Nature-Based Learning Started for KyraKyra's journey with nature-based learning is deeply rooted in her own lifelong connection with nature, beginning in her childhood and continuing through adulthood. Motivated by a personal health scare and an understanding of nature's positive benefits, Kyra sought to make a bigger difference and create a lasting impact through her work. The NBL program at her school is built on three main pillars:- Academic Growth- Physical and Emotional Wellness- Community Building, which includes fostering connections with the natural community. Benefits of Nature-Based LearningThe program supports Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives, with data collected from Wellness Check-ins indicating significant benefits. Students exhibit awe, joy, and 100% engagement during nature-based activities, which positively impacts their overall well-being and readiness to engage in classroom learning. The program emphasizes learning outdoors, and its benefits are evident as students transition back into the classroom environment. Outcomes of the ProgramThe implementation of NBL has led to a noticeable culture shift within the school. Behavior referrals have decreased, and there are initial findings of academic growth. The school has also established an outdoor classroom and developed lessons that integrate with the district's curriculum, enhancing the learning experience. Goals for the FutureKyra is currently awaiting final approval to conduct research on the impact of NBL at her school in collaboration with a professor from SUNY Brockport. The program aims to meet the needs defined within the City of Rochester's Children and Outdoor Bill of Rights. Future goals include incorporating more teacher preparation programs with local universities, expanding the NBL program to other schools within the district and beyond, and creating a generation of Nature Ambassadors. One of my favourite suggestions from Kyra can be found around minute 37 when she talks about Nature Portraits and Nature Names! For more information about the Fall 2024 symposium, visit: Rochester Ecology Partners EventLearn more about the City of Rochester's Children and Outdoor Bill of Rights here: City of Rochester Article

After graduating from SUNY Brockport with a degree in physical education and completing a master's program on an OSEP grant, he has spent the last 15 years working in various positions in the San Diego Unified School District until he reached the position of lead APE teacher. They discussed the way in which podcasts connect APE teachers and allow different perspectives to be shared. He discusses lessons he learned the hard way through podcasting, like how to be flexible and how to disagree politely and respectfully. Ahrens has mild cerebral palsy and had a nine-year career with the U.S. Men's National Paralympic Soccer Team and was recently a finalist for the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Soccer was a huge part of his life, and he described the excitement of watching World Cup games during his childhood and how the transformational power of sports can lift people up. Next, they have dived into how the pandemic has affected the field of education, with a focus on the mental health of students. When looking back on his career up until this point, he stated that in every school situation he found himself in, he left it better than he found it. He advises Masters APE students to rock the boat, as they have the unique opportunity to change the field for the better. When looking forward to the next 20 years of the field, he compares the rise of online programs versus traditional hands-on experience, as these careers in the APE field require hands-on practice to be successful.

On today's show, we're taking a break from our focus on PA and head north to the Central New York region…yes, the place I grew up. We'll be talking to James Meyers, a Democrat running for the New York State Senate in the 53rd District. The 53rd is significantly different following New York's redistricting in 2022. The district now includes my hometown of Utica, NY. Meyers hopes to defeat Republican Joseph Griffo in this fall's general election. Meyers is running for the 53rd New York State Senate District with the aim of bringing a fresh approach to representing Central New Yorkers in their state government. He is a veteran with a strong background in service and leadership. Meyers grew up in a working-class environment in Upstate New York in a family who dedicated their professional lives to the service of others. After graduating from SUNY Brockport via an ROTC scholarship with a degree in history, he accepted a commission into active service as an intelligence officer in the United States Army. He currently holds the rank of Major in the Army Reserve. While serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, he earned a master's degree in strategic intelligence. His military service led to a position with Alion Science and Technology, a government contracting firm in Rome, NY where he was responsible for the management and completion of million-dollar projects. His love for central New York, the influence of his family, his education, military career and civilian experience, James is motivated to serve our community with the same passion and dedication he has and continues to serve our country. Meyers is running on a platform of transparency, accountability, and putting the needs of his constituents first. He is an advocate for public safety, economic development, and accessible and affordable healthcare. Coach Jim Johnson, based in Rochester, New York, is a basketball luminary known for both his decades-long coaching achievements and a singular, heartwarming moment in 2006. Over his 30-year coaching tenure, he transformed losing teams into champions and accrued an enviable record of 428-221. However, it was his decision in a 2006 game that made national headlines: he allowed Jason McElwain (known as J-Mac), an autistic team manager, to play. In just a few minutes on the court, J-Mac netted 20 points, including six three-pointers, thrusting both player and coach into the national spotlight. The years that followed were filled with milestones. After the celebrated game, Greece Athena clinched its first Section V title. Furthermore, Coach Johnson received multiple accolades, including several Coach of the Year awards. He went on to guide the Trojans to an astonishing 66-5 record over three seasons. Another memorable moment arose when he and J-Mac were jointly featured in a 2009 CBS Sports segment. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland and SUNY-Brockport, Coach Johnson took retirement from teaching in 2014 and coaching in 2015, but his mission didn't end there. He transitioned to motivational speaking, offering presentations such as "Dreams Really Do Come True" and "Leadership Lessons from Half-Court". In his talks, Johnson underscores the essence of teamwork and leadership. He frequently references the historic game, emphasizing how J-Mac's teammates, driven by camaraderie, consistently passed him the ball. Now, with a commitment to broadening horizons, Coach Johnson travels the nation, inspiring and educating a new generation with his story and insights. Learn more at: https://coachjimjohnson.com/

When an underdog entrepreneur is furloughed from work and falls into a pattern of destructive behavior, he decides to take control and change his life for the better. "I realized now I started to find purpose in life because I wasn't the best musician, I wasn't the best drummer. I played guitar, drums, this and that. But my real sweet spot was handing out flyers, talking to people, connecting with people, and that's where Ben Albert is the owner of Balbert Marketing, LLC and the curator of the Real Business Connections Network. He is a successful entrepreneur who is passionate about helping other underdogs achieve their dreams. This is Ben Albert's story... I was always a shy, reclusive kid, and my dad taught me to hide my problems and not speak up when I needed help. As a result, I developed some addictions that I hid from everyone. I had a good job, but when COVID hit and I was laid off, I started binge drinking and it got out of control. I looked in the mirror and I knew I needed to make a change. I started stacking values and stacking skills, and I slowly began to turn my life around. I'm now sober, and I'm living my life as an entrepreneur. I'm in the mud learning as I go, but I'm loving every minute of it. Chapter Summaries: [00:04:08] - Ben albert won a contest to get on justin's podcast. He was furloughed from work two years ago, and now he hosts a business network with over 220 shows in two years. Justin reached out to ben albert to offer him a spot on his show. Ben albert is an entrepreneur, learning as he goes. [00:06:25] - Two years ago, Ben got laid off. He came from an alcoholic father and his mom has a mental disability. He was working two jobs his whole life. He thought he was happy in his corporate job, but he was miserable. Covid hit, and he started drinking a lot. He used to take half Xanax every Monday because he couldn't handle the stress. He drank a bottle of Gym Beam whiskey every weekend and he looked bad. He decided to change his lifestyle. [00:08:58] - As a kid, he was taught to hide his problems by his alcoholic father. Now he wants to slow down and improve his life. He wants to focus on values and skills instead of alcohol and drug abuse. He is going to get into the business side of things too. As a kid, he wanted to be a basketball player, but he was bullied. In high school, he became obsessed with music and marketing. He hosted a music podcast, did sales for a marketing firm, and started a business rated podcast in November 2020. Now he's a podcaster marketer. Freddy Vasquez is a former guest on the show. Freddy started with bands and MySpace pages, and now he's got a successful branding company and marketing company. [00:19:33] - Ben started a business podcast called Rochester business connections. It's going to do an episode every 52 weeks for a year. He believes that people missed the boat on podcasting and the power of networking that you can create with it. Justin is a SUNY Brockport alumnus and new business owner. Just showing up is half the battle. People get caught up or overwhelmed with the big vision and don't take the first step. Interviewing people is a great networking tool for you and from that standpoint as well as a business tool for your marketing business. [00:25:12] - In podcasting. You reach out to people with a big vision and you want to collaborate with them. You can do this in anything in life. In this case, it's potential customersconnections and it's anybody that I would pay to learn from. [00:28:39] - Marketing is a natural process for him. He doesn't want to be overly pitchy. He uses LinkedIn to build relationships with people. His approach is very soft, and he prefers to give more than he asks for more than 20 times. He believes that the universe will provide when it wants to. [00:31:25] - Ben's definition of success [00:35:26] - Justin Schenck is being interviewed on his show. Before the interview, he explains how people can find him on LinkedIn and how they can connect with him on Realbusinessconnections.com. He recommends listening to the episode number 27 of his show with Justin Schenck [00:39:15] - Ben's biggest moment of growth was launching the local business podcast and rebranding it to a national audience.  Connect with me: Instagram: www.instagram.com/justintschenck Facebook: www.facebook.com/gnmpodcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChPGPJSqiIE_H3mzfUDV9Mw Website: www.growthnowmovement.com

For years now, most of us have been swept under social media's spell. In spite of the fair criticisms it receives, we can't deny its importance as a tool for engagement. Now there's a new kid on the block when it comes to nonprofit messaging: TikTok. And as a result of its frenetic short-form videos, artificial intelligence, and relative ease of video creation and amplification, it is changing the way organizations relate to their audiences. In this episode, we talk to Dr. Kimberly Wiley, Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Sciences at the University of Florida, who led a team of researchers to code 1,160 TikTok videos from 58 nonprofits to better understand how organizations use the platform – and which messages engage their audiences the most. We also learn from Darcy Porter, Associate Director of Communications and Content Strategy, who has harnessed the power of TikTok at SUNY Brockport to mastermind everything from student influencers to a viral video memorializing a beloved campus squirrel.

Episode 66. “Sometime the things that we thought are good for us may not be good in the long term. Those are the moments when those things are happening (and) you will feel catastrophic loss and all those kind of things. Then later on if you look back, you say, “Oh, that wasn't good for me and it's a blessing that I came out of it, better and wiser.”Dr. Rehnuma Karim grew up in Bangladesh and majored in Economics but decided to change her track when she came to pursue her Ph.D in the field of Environment and Leisure Studies at Penn State. She was a full time faculty at SUNY Brockport but after 2015, she became an adjunct faculty and started her own non-profit, Heroes for All, both in NY and in Bangladesh. She is also co-host of the Limitless Leadership Lounge Podcast and is working on a book with Coach Jim Johnson.Dr. Karim shares her heroes journey with Linda:- “I'm watching this movie, Batman, when Batman was saying “What do I do? I cannot rise. Why do we fall?" And then Alfred says, “We fall because the universe wants to see how you rise again.”  It just resonated.- “I think faith really helped me so I knew that no matter what, everything happens for a reason and I will be coming out of it. So usually faith, family, and friends. And when you have a meaning to what you are doing, that is what can lift you up.” - “There were neighbors who would come to my mom and complain. It looks odd, a girl hanging around and playing in the streets. But my mom and dad, they were very progressive, especially my dad. He said that it's her life. I don't see her as a girl or a boy. She's a human and she can do whatever she loves to do.” - “My dissertation was on acid attack victims, victims who were thrown acid at their face and how they even coped after such a tragedy. When I was doing the interview, I found out those girls are filled with life and some of them were saying that they knew more about life after the tragedy happened. And if it didn't happen, they wouldn't know that they had the power to make a difference.”To find her podcast, Limitless Leadership Lounge. To contact Rehnuma and/or learn more about her non-profit, go to HeroesForAll.org.  What came up for you as a result of this conversation?  Let Linda know by going to Normal-Lies.com and leave a review.  Linda reads every one and every month, she chooses one review to read on air.  Who knows, she may choose yours! If you have a question or a topic you'd like addressed on an upcoming episode, go to Normal-Lies.com and click the contact page to send Linda a message.
