The discourse presented during this session at Theology Beer Camp 2024 in Denver, Colorado, delves into the intricate relationship between video games and theological and ethical considerations. Central to the conversation is Ben Chicka's latest publication, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games," which posits that engaging with video games can facilitate profound reflections on identity and moral agency. The dialogue, led by Joshua Noel of Systematic Geekology and Taylor Thomas of Tillich Today, explores how players navigate their interactions within virtual realms, particularly when embodying characters that differ from their own lived experiences. Through the lens of philosophical theology, the speakers examine the ways in which video games serve as cultural artifacts that can affirm one's existence while simultaneously fostering empathy for others. This episode ultimately encourages listeners to recognize the potential of gaming as a medium for ethical engagement and personal growth, challenging the traditional boundaries of both theology and popular culture.Check out Ben Chicka's book, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games":https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Others-Theology-Ethical-Responsibility/dp/1481315463.Follow Taylor Thomas' podcast, "Tillich Today":https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tillich-today/id1725855909In a thought-provoking recording from Theology Beer Camp 2024, Joshua Noel and Taylor Thomas engage Ben Chicka in a dialogue that traverses the intersection of gaming and theology, anchored by Chicka's recent publication, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games." The setting, a vibrant gathering of theological minds in Denver, provides a rich backdrop for exploring the implications of gaming on personal identity and ethical considerations. Chicka, a Senior Lecturer at Curry College, articulates how video games can transcend mere entertainment, serving instead as a conduit for theological reflection and ethical engagement. At the heart of the conversation lies the assertion that playing video games as diverse characters can foster a sense of empathy and understanding, facilitating a deeper connection to the experiences of others. Chicka draws upon the works of Paul Tillich to frame his arguments, suggesting that video games can create spaces for encountering the 'Other' and grappling with complex ethical dilemmas. Through examples from notable titles such as "Gone Home" and "Mass Effect," he elucidates how these narratives challenge players' assumptions and promote a more inclusive worldview. The episode further explores the cultural significance of gaming communities, positing that they can embody modern theological spaces that encourage acceptance and pluralism. Chicka's insights invite listeners to reconsider their relationship with video games, framing them as potent tools for personal and communal transformation. By the conclusion of the discussion, the audience is left with a renewed appreciation for the theological dimensions of gaming, encouraging a conscientious approach to engaging with digital narratives.Takeaways: The theological and ethical implications of video games extend beyond mere entertainment, inviting deeper reflection on identity and existence. Ben Chicka's work emphasizes the role of video games in shaping cultural narratives and understanding the 'other' in a theological context. The discussion highlights how video games can create spaces for marginalized voices, fostering acceptance and...

Episode 71: TJ Manastersky. Fellow Oswego Alumni and current Head Coach of Brock University, TJ Manastersky, stopped by the prohockeypod this week. TJ grew up in the GTA area and would end up playing 5 years in the OJHL before heading off to D3 SUNY-Oswego. We swapped stories about Oswego, the great community support the team gets, Bridge Street Runs, and some funny memories of the historic Oswego/Plattsburgh rivalry. After College, TJ would play 1 year professionally in the SPHL before transitioning to coaching. He was given a chance to get his foot in the door at Canisius College for 2 season before going to SUNY-Fredonia. He would get his first Head Coaching job at Curry College where he stayed for 9 seasons, helping to turn the program around and become a strong contender. After a brief stop with D1 Union College, TJ would find a home at Brock University. It didn't take him long to make an impact. In his 2nd season, the team would have their best year in school program history and TJ would win Coach of the Year. One part of the interview that really stood out to me was when we talked about how TJ establishes his culture at his schools. He takes into consideration the school history/community involved as well as his players. How do they see the culture? What do they want to be viewed as? Questions like these. Ultimately this leads to teams creating their own identity and running with it. Another great episode so give it a listen and hope you enjoy!

https://www.allanhunter.net/ allanmatchless@yahoo.com I'm a writer and a life coach. British by birth, I've traveled widely and lived in many countries - Madagascar, Peru, India, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland amongst others. I have a doctoral degree in English Literature from Oxford University. In 1986 I moved to the US. I spent most of my teaching career as a professor of literature at Curry College and have also taught at Boston University and Bay Path University. I now have my own coaching practice. I have published twelve books so far and given nearly 100 radio/media interviews. If interested in coaching, please schedule a complimentary half hour ZOOM session in which we can meet and see if what I offer is a good match for you. How It Works Coaching is especially helpful when moving through change points in life, when looking for clarity about relationships and career, or when wanting to take creative work to new levels. All sessions are one hour long and via ZOOM at a mutually agreeable time. Most people begin by meeting once a week and taper off as things progress. Experience I've been doing this work my whole life, with nearly forty years of experience working with people aged 17 and up. I'm a professor emeritus of Literature at Curry College, and a Faculty Member in the Department of Narrative Medicine at Bay Path University. In addition to teaching Literature, I have run many courses on writing for self-exploration and counseled students and adults. Stories We Need to Know: Reading Your Life Path in Literature This works uncovers the six developmental milestones of personal development, as revealed in 3,000 years of the world's finest literature. The same six milestones appear, always in the same order, always serving the same function. I argue that this shows that this is a deep structure of the psyche, something people have known intuitively for thousands of years - and therefore it can be a road map for how we can live our best lives. Write Your Memoir: The Soul Work of Telling Your Life Story Writing your memoir will change the way you see your life. The trouble is that most people don't know how to stay with the task or sort out what's important. Based on the highly successful workshops taught at the Blue Hills Writing Institute, this book will guide you through the process - and help you discover the riches within you that you've probably forgotten about. The Six Archetypes of Love Most of us are confused by love, and falling in love can only add to the upset. So - who are you when you're in love? Which archetype will you choose to live? These six archetypes are the developmental mlestones described in ‘Stories We Need to Know', explained in terms of what it is we need to know about loving others. Knowing about them can lead us to find the core of a love that is constantly maturing and growing. Prince, Frogs and Ugly Sisters; The Grimm Brothers' Healing Tales The Grimm brothers' tales are not just disposable items for small children at bedtime. Many contain deep wisdom that can tell us how to live our best lives if we read them carefully. This book explores this topic—and it's very different from the ‘happily ever after' myth that Disney has given us. The Path of Synchronicity Sometimes things just happen, dovetailing effortlessly. What does this mean for how we encounter our world? What does it tell us when we strive valiantly, to no result? Making sense of this, which some people simply call ‘luck' is an important step if we are to live in harmony with our world, and tune into the finest aspects of who we are. Spiritual Hunger Our world is fun of people who are hungry for a meaningful existence, but who find only the junk-food of commercialism. In this book we'll discover that there's plenty of good nutritious food for our souls - if we take the opportunity to look for it. If you seek a life of meaning and wonder, then this is the book for you.

https://www.allanhunter.net/ I'm a writer and a life coach. Email using the form below.

Meet Courtney Beggs! Courtney is a professor at Curry College and owner of Education Together Consulting, where she helps families navigate the college admissions process. This involves SO many steps: asking a lot of questions/getting to know the students individually (and their unique needs, learning styles, and goals), researching and presenting 8-10 schools that would be a good fit, prepping for campus visits, essay writing, financial aid analysis and more! In this episode we talked about how so many students don't fully comprehend student loans and the cost of higher education, how guidance counselors are often outnumbered 400:1 by students (yes, 400:1!), and why college admissions consulting is often financially out of reach for most families (and what she is doing to challenge that!) We also discussed how she came up with the name of her business, and why she purposefully didn't use collegiate colors and a corporate style to brand her services. Courtney also talks about why collaboration is the key to her clients' success, how COVID affected colleges and students, and how one opportunity to work with a student led to this new, exciting career path! A pillar of her core values is social justice, so we also discussed that although going to college is a cultural norm for most rich white people, students of color are often far less encouraged to go to college at all. We wrapped up our conversation talking about stereotypes of female professors, why it's important to not only share feedback AFTER you get results but also THROUGHOUT the process of getting there, how we can reframe our life narratives with the help of outside perspectives, and how word of mouth referrals will always be her best client source. If you have a sophomore or junior high school student or know someone who is anxious about the college application process, email courtney.beggs@curry.edu or call/text her at 774-218-7195 with any questions! And be sure to give her a follow on instagram @courtney_beggs for more inspiring educational content.

His family moved to Israel when he was six; that was when he first picked up a basketball. Shortly after Barak returned to the states and basketball became his life. Training, playing, and competing were the only things he cared about. At 16 years-old, Barak was diagnosed with 2 hairline fractures and Spondylolisthesis in his back. He was put in a back brace and shut down from activity for 6 months. He pushed through his pain and continued to play eventually playing college ball at Elmira College and then transferred for his last two years at Curry College. Barak spent countless time in surgery and rehab. He knew he wasn't on his way to the NBA, but he never allowed his work ethic be the reason he wasn't getting better. Barak thought that being injured and never reaching his potential was one of his life's biggest failures, but now realizes that it's actually his life's biggest asset. Barak's experience of being an injured athlete gave him a window of opportunity to help athletes become so healthy, fit, elite and strong that they don't have to endure what he did. Follow on social media @otherbarak Learn more at https://www.barakswarttz.com/Watch all our podcasts and clips on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9AOctuPEJiUH7POKHrgehwBook Charlie Smith for live talks here:https://charliesmithspeaks.comNeed Help or know someone with Substance Abuse issues:https://executiverecoveryprogram.com/homehttps://www.archwayhouse.com https://overcomeoutloud.com

The Empowering Song approach was originally developed in Massachusetts prisons by André de Quadros, Emily Howe, and Jamie Hillman to create an artistic interdisciplinarity that, while rooted in music, stretches into different arts areas. This approach which traverses improvisation and storytelling through poetry, songwriting, visual arts, movement, and theatre, has been used in multiple choral settings and missions, including community choruses, reconciliation and peace-building projects, mental health programs, and displacement contexts.Emily Howe is an ethnomusicologist, music educator, and conductor based in Boston. In 2012, Emily started co-teaching in Boston University's Prison Education Program, where she has worked to develop interdisciplinary pedagogical strategies that empower incarcerated people to explore their creative potential. She currently teaches at Curry College in Boston. Bobby Iacoviello is a formerly incarcerated person who participated in the Empowering Song course through the Boston University Prison Education Program.
