This week, President Trump signed executive orders that profoundly affect teaching and learning. The most immediate involves mass deportation and authorizing immigration agents to make arrests at schools. To understand how the education community is navigating these developments, we contacted teachers, principals, superintendents, education reporters, and immigration lawyers. We encountered intense emotions and confusion; many were unwilling or unprepared to speak publicly. We eventually found a group that was willing to share their thoughts, feelings, plans, and resources they're using. Most of all, they offered their best reasons for hope amid the uncertainty ahead. Many of my colleagues working in the public sector are skeptical of companies selling products to school districts. I've felt some of this skepticism myself as I've seen certain approaches gain traction because they're well-marketed (yet not evidence-based). So it's understandable to me that people would question the motives of companies selling products; especially in the for-profit space. The elephant in the room, of course, is that Dr. Karen, LLC is a for-profit EdTech company. I've also spent a fair amount of time interacting with people who either work for larger EdTech or curriculum companies, or who have started one themselves. Most of them are therapists, administrators, or teachers who felt inspired to create something who are trying to make a living doing something that matters. This would describe many of the hosts on the Be Podcast Network, which is why I wanted to invite one of the network co-founders, Ross Romano, to De Facto Leaders to talk about his experiences coaching EdTech and education-related start-up founders. Ross Romano has worked with over 100 companies and nonprofit organizations in the education space and collaborated with countless schools, districts, and educators. What are you celebrating today?●      Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do?  Part 2: Developing a coaching culture ●      I come from an athletic coaching background. I have this dream that teachers would have access to highly targeted and technical coaching, just like the world's premier athletes. Yet, many teachers don't see coaching as an important tool in growing. What happened? Is there a way to flip the narrative? ●      Do you see unique needs among teachers at different career stages that should inform how leaders engage in coaching with a given group of teachers?●      Is there such thing as a “culture of coaching”? Does it make sense and is it possible to build a school around the idea that teacher growth is the priority and that coaching is the core way we help teacher perfect their craft?●      How has your understanding of coaching grown in the past ten years from the release of The Art of Coaching in 2013 to your revised volume this year? Closing questions:●      What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?●      If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?●      Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?●      Where can people learn more about you and your work… Wrap-up·      Begin cultivating a culture of learning by making your learning goals, and you work on them, transparent. Model the way of being you want your teachers to embrace. If you have a coach (and you should), brag about it and explain to teachers the link between what you are learning and what you are doing.·      Remember, coaching is only one tool we have for helping teachers to grow, but it is a powerful one.·      We need to align teacher and student needs in our coaching·      And I love this one: Know how the 8-year old you is powering who you are today. The better you know yourself, the better coach you will be.·      We will wrap this with a personal note related to knowing yourself… Close●     Leadership is a journey and thank you for choosing to walk some of this magical path with me.●     You can find links to all sorts of stuff in the show notes, including my website https://www.frederickbuskey.com/●     I love hearing from you so consider email me at frederick@frederickbuskey.com or connecting with me on LinkedIn.●     My new book, A School Leader's Guide to Reclaiming Purpose, is now available on Amazon. I came across the book soon after and it has shaped the way I view and do coaching. Today's show is part 1 of my discussion with Elena in which we focus defining coaching and identifying the foundations of coaching. There are some great pieces of wisdom in today's show, so please pay close attention. Guest Bio:Elena Aguilar is a writer, leader, teacher, coach and podcaster. What are you celebrating today?●      Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do?  Part 1: Coaching 101 for school leaders●      “It's all about relationships.” Is this true for coaching? What is the foundation of a coaching relationship?●      Can we define what constitutes coaching? What is coaching and what isn't?●      Your framework includes different models of coaching (directive/instructive, facilitative, transformational). This framework has been foundational in helping me to better understand coaching and the coaching relationship. For leaders who are trying to grow their coaching skills, is there a specific model, or specific techniques they should focus on?●      "Fast-food" coaching for administrators who have very little time, is it possible? What is most essential?●      Many administrators feel the need - and have been specifically taught - to provide feedback to teachers outside of a coaching relationship. I am not a fan, unless the teacher has asked for the feedback. Can we talk about the value or harm that comes from unsolicited and unsupported feedback? (Maybe my view on this needs to be reconsidered?) Closing questions:●      What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?●      If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?●      Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?●      Where can people learn more about you and your work… Closing points:·      Foundations of coaching are trust, listening, and asking·      Coaching is building, not fixing·      Let go of “a grow and a glow” – It doesn't work.·      We can help teachers grow more by emphasizing what they are doing well·      We'll be back next week with part 2 in which we look at transformative coaching and discuss a culture of coaching.Close●     Leadership is a journey and thank you for choosing to walk some of this magical path with me.●     You can find links to all sorts of stuff in the show notes, including my website https://www.frederickbuskey.com/●     I love hearing from you so consider email me at frederick@frederickbuskey.com or connecting with me on LinkedIn.●     My new book, A School Leader's Guide to Reclaiming Purpose, is now available on Amazon. In this episode of Transformative Principal, Jethro Jones engages in a profound discussion with Sean Slade, co-head of North America at BTS Spark, about reevaluating traditional perceptions of leadership, particularly around the management of emotions. Sean challenges the archetype of the stoic, emotionless leader, suggesting that vulnerability, emotion, and personal connection are crucial elements for effective leadership, especially highlighted by observations from the first year of the pandemic. The conversation delves into how leaders who embraced their humanity, admitting uncertainty and fostering relationships, tended to succeed more. Drawing on a study and the insights from the book Embracing MESSY Leadership, Sean emphasizes the critical role of emotions in building trust, cultivating teamwork, and enhancing problem-solving capacities. He argues for a shift from controlling to exercising and utilizing emotions as strategic tools in leadership. The podcast also touches on the practical aspects of having difficult conversations and the importance of authenticity, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness in leadership roles. Sean concludes by underscoring the evolving understanding of leadership as beyond a series of tasks, advocating for emotional adeptness as a key leadership skill.Maybe the emotionless leader is not quite correct. MESSY Leadership came out of the pandemicThe leaders who were able to make personal connections, build relationships and show vulnerability did quite well. Exercise your emotion rather than controlling your emotions.Admit uncertaintyPose questions back to teamHigh level of self-awareness and self-confidenceEveryone wants to feel like they matter and they want to belong. You are part of this community. Don't we want to be authentic ourselves?Get communication cards.Leadership as a series of tasks and duties. Making people feel happy on a surface level. What's putting you in the box? In a world where education is constantly evolving, it's essential to explore innovative approaches that cater to students' diverse needs. Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing Jeffrey Benson, a seasoned educator, author, and advocate for creating inclusive and supportive learning environments. In our conversation, Benson shared his wisdom on empowering students, fostering interdisciplinary teams, and the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in today's classrooms.Empowering Students Through Focus and Understanding:Benson emphasizes the significance of understanding students' needs and creating a classroom environment that encourages engagement and productivity. Cheri discusses her method, "Focus Triggers," which is designed to help teachers improve classroom dynamics by addressing the specific needs of each student. By acknowledging students' unique challenges, educators can tailor their teaching methods to foster a more inclusive and effective learning environment. The Role of Interdisciplinary Teams in Education:One of Benson's passions is creating interdisciplinary teams within schools to support students' writing skills. He believes that collaboration among different subject teachers can provide a more holistic approach to education, ensuring that students receive consistent support across all areas of learning. This collaborative effort can bridge gaps in education and provide students with a well-rounded educational experience. The Importance of Social-Emotional Learning:Benson also highlights the critical role of social-emotional learning (SEL) in modern education. He argues that SEL should be integrated across the entire education system, not just treated as a buzzword. Educators can create a more empathetic and self-aware generation by teaching students to advocate for themselves and understand their own emotions. Benson's approach to SEL involves making it explicit in lesson plans and encouraging students to participate actively in their learning. Conclusion:Jeffrey Benson's insights into education are a testament to the power of innovative thinking and compassion in teaching. Educators can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment by focusing on students' individual needs, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and prioritizing social-emotional learning. As we continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of education, it's clear that approaches like Benson's will be instrumental in shaping the future of learning.Call to Action:Are you an educator looking to implement these innovative strategies in your classroom? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below, and let's continue the conversation on creating more supportive and inclusive educational environments for all students.BiographyJeffrey Benson has over forty years of experience as a teacher, mentor, and school administrator. His passion is supporting schools to be more successful with more students. He is an internationally known author, including the books "Hanging In-- Strategies for Working with the Students Who Challenge Us Most;" "Ten Steps for Managing Change in Schools;" "Teaching the Whole Teen: Everyday Practices that Promote Success and Resilience in School and Life;" "Improve Every Lesson Plan with SEL;" and his newest book, "Hacking School Discipline Together." Jeffrey leads school change initiatives, facilitating interdisciplinary teams that convert long-standing dilemmas into cutting-edge growth and community building and creating more inclusive school and classroom cultures. He is a member of the ASCD faculty, is frequently published in education journals, and speaks at conferences on working with challenging students, integrating SEL into everyday practices, restorative practices, decision-making skills for leaders, and the science of learning and teaching.
