Straight up, asking questions listeners would want to ask of Armando Tajeda, Executive Administrative Assistant and Public Information Officer Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC). He conceded the agency doesn't have a long history (and that's true in many other cities as well) of absolute transparency, that's now changed. And offer Armando an opportunity to […]

Quick trigger warning: This episode does talk about euthanasia. Nothing graphic or disturbing, but the topic is discussed in no uncertain terms. So just be ready for it. If you've been on social media and/or keeping up with your local news lately, you've probably seen lots of reporting about how animal shelters across the country are at capacity. And there's no denying that shelters here in Chicago and elsewhere are in crisis. On this episode, Bill talks with Armando Tejeda. He's the public information officer for Chicago Animal Care and Control. He also functions as the executive assistant to the shelter director and manages CACC's community outreach and social media. Bill and Armando talk about what CACC does and what day-to-day life is like there, for both humans and animals. They also get into some numbers and talk about how the shelter is managing, despite being pretty much packed to the gills. You can find CACC online at https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cacc.html. You can also search for "Chicago Animal Care and Control" on all your favorite social channels. DON'T FORGET: Bill wants to answer YOUR training and behavior questions on the pod. And they want to play your lovely voices asking those questions. You've got two options: Use your audio recording app of choice to record yourself asking a training or behavior question and email it to podcast@bigwagschicago.com. Bill will then play it on the pod and answer it. You can actually jump on a recording session with Bill and you'll go over your question together. That'll let Bill ask you follow-up questions and really dig deep into the issue. If that's the route you want to go, shoot Bill a quick email at podcast@bigwagschicago.com. Chicago Animal Care and Control is tasked with taking care of and controlling animals found throughout the city including kittens, dogs, coyotes and even the occasional peacock. The department relies not only on city employees but also on volunteers who help care for animals and get them adopted out. The Daily Line's Erin Hegarty talked with Executive Director Mamadou Diakhate about the regular and not-so-regular animals the department sees, how it's ramping up its marketing strategy and how it's targeting resources in the two Chicago neighborhoods that register the most calls into the department.
Co-founder and CEO of ground-breaking Safe Humane Chicago Cynthia Bathurst explains how this organization supports humane treatment of dogs, including so-called court case dogs. At one point dogs were doing time without a committing a crime at Chicago Animal Care and Control only because their owners abused them or got into trouble with the law. Waiting for […]

Susan Russell’s name should sound familiar to Chicago animal lovers, as she is the former executive director of Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC). There are communities around the country that are thriving during what is a very difficult time. What makes them so successful and what lessons can we all learn from them? We'll be looking at some of those communities on The Best Friends Podcast and we're starting with Chicago. It's the 3rd largest city in the country and Chicago's municipal shelter, CACC, has not had the best reputation in the past for transparency and collaboration. There have been big improvements in collaborative lifesaving solutions over the last several years between the municipal shelter and rescue community and it couldn't have come at a better time. A united front has helped rally the entire animal-loving public to step up in ways once thought unimaginable. This episode features: Jenny Schlueter, https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cacc.html (Chicago Animal Care and Control) Nicole Quattrocki, https://www.fix-chicago.org/ (Fix Chicago) Heather Owen, https://www.onetail.org/ (One Tail at a Time Dog Rescue) -- https://bestfriends.org/podcast (Visit the website for The Best Friends Podcast)

Chicagoland Rescue Intervention Support Program (CRISP) is a program at Chicago Animal Care and Control that aims to keep animals with their owners by providing help in the form of vetting or landlord help etc. If that cannot happen, CRISP tries to get the animals to rescue. On this Friday in June, CRISP was busier than ever. A little Day in the Life of CRISP.
Chicago Animal Care and Control is one of the most important city-run organizations. Yet, a few weeks ago, without warning they fired what many thought was the best Director in decades. A shit storm ensued and we are trying to sort everything out to be sure people understand WHAT is going on and HOW they can help. Oh, and would Heather ever apply for the Director job? The answer made me giggle.
Susan Russell, the Executive Director of Chicago Animal Care and Control and Heather Owen, Founder of One Tail at a Time animal rescue join me to discuss a plethora of topics including the flu, euthanasia, fostering and so much more. Things get a tad heated when we discuss why more women are immersed if rescue, but it is a great debate and one we would like to explore further. I enjoyed the live element of the broadcast and I think you will too.
"Our relationship was better after you quit the transfer team." He is right. I am mad it took me so long to realize how much of a time suck that was, but I am so grateful for everything I learned at Chicago Animal Care and Control. Schipp is kind of shy about putting our lives out there, but he was a great guest. "I try to help Sarah think with her head and not her heart." Sometimes I am clouded by the passion to save an animal, when in reality it may not be the best. Schipp is always a sounding board for me. I am so thankful to have someone like him.
Dawn Isenhart-Copp and I became instant friends when we 1st met at Chicago Animal Care and Control and I had a White Sox tee on... "I knew I liked you when I met you and you had that tee on!" she said. Dawn is amazing. She has the best heart, but has an edge to her that I SO RESPECT and when she rants-it is amazing. Haaaaa. Tomorrow, she tells the story of Midnight-a dog she rescued from my pavilion C at animal control a few years ago, who almost had a tragic ending. Also, as I called her to do the podcast, I was in tears as I was cramming in some last minute research on Lulu's Locker Rescue and why the name Lulu's. I think it is a story we can all relate too and still SO RELEVANT. You are a good dude Andy! She rescues old dogs and cats and black animals-very, very tough. We talk about it all.
I met Josh Feeney when I first started to volunteer at Chicago Animal Care and Control and we became fast friends. He has taken thousands of photos of dogs to try to get them adopted or rescue. It is certainly an art. "There are a lot of things that you cannot change in this World, but going to Animal Care and Control and being on the front lines, is something you can do. People that are physically going to the shelter are the ones really making a difference."

Appi Preusen, based outside of Chicago, Illinois, is an animal rescue hero and today's guest. Over the past 15 years, on her own initiative and hard work, Appi has helped save at least 700 to 800 dogs and cats. She has formed an informal network of fosters. She doesn't have her own facility, board of directors, famous millionaires, or silent auction fundraisers to help her cause. It's simply she and a dedicated group of people. She's been doing this as long as she could remember, even as a child. Appi gives a wide-ranging overview of fostering 1. Why fostering is important, 2. expectations new fosters should have, 3. matching your activity level with your foster animal's 4. the space requirements for fosters, and 5. the need to foster all types and ages of animals. She also shares some terrific foster / animal rescue stories, including Hector, an older Applehead Chihuahua, and Duke, a Pitbull-Great Dane mix.
