God loves to make us work for it by Autumn Dickson Asa is one of the kings we read about this week. He was a king of Judah, the southern kingdom. He starts out his reign really strong, tearing down idol worship and deposing his own grandmother who worshipped idols. He encouraged people to seek the Lord. Unfortunately, he also took a turn for the worse and started trusting in human solutions over God, and he died. There is one verse in the midst of his story that I want to share. 2 Chronicles 14:6-7 6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the Lord had given him rest. 7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered. Asa had a time of peace during his reign, and in the midst of this peace, he built fortified cities in Judah. Asa goes on to face an Ethiopian army, and he is vastly outnumbered. As he faces his enemy, he cries out to God. 2 Chronicles 14:11 And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee. The Lord proceeds to smite the Ethiopians, and they are driven back. So here is my question…why did they fortify their cities? Over and over and over again in the Old Testament we read about this same pattern. The Israelites (or in this case, Judah specifically), do all of the things only to have the Lord completely fight their battles. The Lord parted the Red Sea. He made the walls of Jericho come down. He struck down 185,000 Assyrians outside Jerusalem's walls during Hezekiah's reign. This is a consistent pattern throughout scripture. The Lord fights the battles. Entire armies are defeated or become confused or simply flee. So why bother even fortifying the cities? Even in this specific story where the Lord defeats an army of a million Ethiopians, it doesn't say that the fortified cities made a difference in the slightest. So why? Why fortify the city when the Lord defeats the enemy? The only way I can think to explain it is this: chores. Every Monday, our house gets totally cleaned. Bathrooms, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, all of it. Then, throughout the week, my three oldest kids are assigned one chore a day. It is usually the same list of chores that is done on Monday. I remember watching my four year old wipe down the mirrors in the bathroom on Tuesday. That mirror went from clean to streaked in no time flat. My soul kinda died a little bit watching her make the mirror dirtier, and then it died a little more when I had to sneak back in to clean it a third time in two days. But. I have to remind myself that it's not about a clean mirror. It's about a healthy, growing child. She doesn't clean the mirror so that I can have a clean mirror (obviously). She cleans the mirror so that she learns how to clean a mirror (eventually). The Lord paid for our sins. He paid for the sin you committed years ago, the sin you committed yesterday, the sin you're going to commit today, and the sin you're going to commit years into the future. The mirror is already clean. But He still asks us to learn how to clean a mirror. Even when we're actually just making the mirror dirtier again or when we're cleaning an already clean mirror. Being saved means you're clean again, and to some extent, all of us will be saved in some degree of glory. Being saved means you're clean, but being exalted means you grew up. And that's important because it determines our level of happiness. There is inherent worth in knowing how to clean a mirror. There is inherent worth in learning how to fortify your city and do labor. There is inherent worth in growth even if it's not actually contributing to anything yet. There is inherent worth in work even when it's not paying for our salvation. The Lord saves us. He cleaned the mirror. He protected His people throughout the scriptures. But He asks us to learn how to clean the mirror because we won't find happiness unless we know how. Some of the most miserable people I know are the ones who don't appreciate the value of working hard. It won't do you much good for the Lord to save you if you're still miserable, and He's not going to hook you up to constant happy drugs in heaven. Where do you think happiness comes from? It doesn't really come from the mirror simply being clean. It comes from growing, and the clean mirror enables you to live with God again. So we follow the Lord and His commandments so we learn how to be happy, and then He pays for the whole experience. He cleanses us so we can return to live with Him, and we return with the knowledge and experience required to find deep and lasting joy. I'm grateful for the scriptures that teach true doctrine. I'm grateful that I get to watch these patterns over and over and over throughout the Old Testament. The Lord does the work, but then He asks us to grow. I see it everywhere. I'm grateful He paid the price for me to get messy and come home with the knowledge and experience I need. I'm grateful that I get to learn, through my own experience, the good from the evil. I testify that the Lord saves, and I also testify that He gives commandments for our good. Autumn Dickson was born and raised in a small town in Texas. On this week's Real Talk Real Estate Podcast, Jay Day and Andy Webb break down the single biggest factor driving the wild differences in home prices across the country right now — and why "the market" isn't one market at all. Here's the simple version: More homes for sale = more buyer options = less competition = prices flatten or dip Fewer homes for sale = buyers competing hard = prices keep climbing States like Texas, Florida, and Colorado have inventory back above 2019 levels — and prices there are flat or slightly down. But most of the country, including much of the Northeast and our own MD/PA/WV/VA region, is still running below pre-pandemic inventory. That's exactly why local prices are still trending up here, even while national headlines scream "cooling market." Bottom line: national averages don't tell YOUR story. Local inventory does. Episode SummaryThis week on Home In Progress, Dan opens with a story about a flaming microwave, a snowbank, and a pair of whitey tighties -- and turns it into a genuinely useful guide on getting smoke smell out of your home. He's then joined by Jeff Mot, manager of the Lakewood RepcoLite, to talk about a car show and ice cream social coming to that store on July 18. Then Dan picks up where last week's bathroom lighting conversation left off, diving into something almost nobody considers: what the color on your bathroom walls is doing to your face in the mirror every morning. He closes with a Hannah SpaghettiO story that leads directly into the case for handy paint cups and pails -- both on sale through the end of June.In This Episode[00:00] -- Show Preview[00:48] -- Microwave Fire Story[02:56] -- Smoke Smell Fixes[03:47] -- Wash Away the Residue[06:40] -- Car Show Tease[07:06] -- Event Basics: Lakewood Car Show and Ice Cream Social[09:11] -- Why Jeff Loves Cars[10:15] -- What Makes Car Shows Fun[13:08] -- Why RepcoLite Hosts[14:50] -- Family Friendly Details[15:22] -- Directions and Construction Note[16:02] -- Bring Your Classic Ride[17:24] -- Rusty Car Banter[17:38] -- Ice Cream Social Details[18:06] -- Event Details Recap[18:43] -- Bathroom Color Cast[24:04] -- Worst Bathroom Colors[26:53] -- Makeup Gone Wrong[31:15] -- Flattering Color Picks[33:25] -- Sample Testing Tips[35:13] -- Cut-In Bucket Story[38:19] -- Handy Paint Pails Pitch[39:54] -- Wrap Up and Sign OffMicrowave Fire Story [00:48]Dan's daughter punched an extra zero into the microwave and walked away. Twenty minutes later, Dan spotted smoke, ran into the kitchen, found something spinning around with actual flames coming out of it, grabbed the microwave, ran outside barefoot in his underwear, and threw it into a snowbank. In Zeeland. Around 10 at night. The kids have loved that story ever since. The aftermath is what the segment is actually about. The smoke smell wouldn't leave. Day after day, it just sat there. If that's happened to you, here's how to actually fix it.Smoke Smell Fixes [02:56]Step 1: Ventilation and filtration.Open windows, run exhaust fans, use box fans to push air out. If the smoke moved through the HVAC system, replace the furnace filter -- smoke particles can get pulled into the return and stay there. A portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter helps pull fine particles out of the air. Do all of this first, but understand that ventilation alone almost never fully solves a smoke smell.Wash Away the Residue [03:47]Step 2: Wash everything. The key thing to understand: smoke isn't just something floating in the air. It's made up of tiny particles and oily residues that land on every surface in the room -- curtains, upholstery, carpet, cabinets, walls, ceilings, clothing, all the little cracks and crevices. That's why airing the place out isn't enough. You have to physically remove the residue.Start at the source. If it was a microwave fire, unplug it, remove everything removable, and wash all of it separately. Then spread out: walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors, trim, light fixtures, switch plates, top of the refrigerator. All the surfaces that don't normally get cleaned. Smoke residue is oily, so one pass usually isn't enough -- clean, rinse, change the water, and go again.Cleaners: A mild Dawn dish soap solution works well on painted surfaces. Krud Kutter and Champion are solid degreasers for non-painted areas. After washing, OdoBan (O-D-O-B-A-N) is a cleaner and heavy-duty odor neutralizer that can knock out what remains. Vinegar, baking soda, and activated charcoal are supporting players -- not substitutes for actually scrubbing everything down.Cigarette smoke is a different conversation -- Dan plans to cover that in a future episode.Lakewood Car Show and Ice Cream Social [07:06]Dan is joined by Jeff Mott, manager of the Lakewood RepcoLite, to talk about a car show and ice cream social coming to the store.Date: Saturday, July 18 Time: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Note: flyers say 11 to 1 -- it's 11 to 2) Location: Lakewood RepcoLiteJeff has been trying to get Dan to host a car show for roughly five years. He owns a 1966 International Scout and grew up around old cars. The event is part of RepcoLite's Summer Stops program -- different events at different store locations throughout the summer, built around community and getting to know customers and contractors better. The Corvette Club will be there with vehicles ranging from brand-new to 1950s and '60s models. Jeff is also welcoming any old cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The appeal of a show like this, Dan has come to understand, is the stories that come with the vehicles -- the restoration history, cars passed down through families, little museums on easels in the parking lot. That part Dan can actually get into.Admission: Free Ice cream: Free, while supplies last, with toppings Bring a classic vehicle: No registration required -- just show up and they'll direct you. If you want to give them a heads-up, call 616-393-0025. Directions note: Road construction on Lakewood Drive limits access to westbound traffic from 120th. You can get in, you can get out, but plan accordingly.Dan will continue reminding listeners as July 18 gets closer.Bathroom Color Cast [18:43]Last week's show covered bathroom lighting and how a poorly lit mirror can make you look worse than you are. Dan adds a second layer: the color on your bathroom walls. He sets it up with a moment from his own week. Walking through the warehouse where he works, he noticed an entire section had gone pink. Bright pink panels had been moved into a spot where they were catching the sun and reflecting it everywhere. Nothing had actually changed -- it just looked that way.Your bathroom walls do the same thing, every morning, to your face. The color reflects back onto your skin while you're standing at the mirror. Most people have no idea it's happening.Photographers call it color cast. Whatever color surrounds you gets cast onto you. Photography studios often paint their walls flat neutral gray to avoid adding a false tint -- they want the true skin tone, then they warm it up with lighting from there. Makeup artists watch for this constantly. A colored wall, a bright shirt, anything nearby can throw a tint onto a face and change the whole look.Bathrooms are especially susceptible because of the combination: small space (you're close to the walls), you're staring into a mirror, and bathrooms tend to be among the more brightly lit rooms in the house. All of that means more wall color gets bounced back at you.Two jobs, not one. Most of the time, when choosing a paint color, you ask how it will look in the space. In a bathroom, you have to ask a second question: how will I look in it? A moody charcoal or a deep, trendy green can look beautiful on the walls and still make the person standing in the room look a little unwell. The room can be magazine-worthy and the color still be wrong for you. That's a distinction people almost never make.Worst Bathroom Colors [24:04]Yellow and yellow-green. Especially anything with green in it. Reflects a sallow, slightly sickly cast onto skin. Cancels out the natural pink and red tones that make a complexion look healthy and awake.Strong reds. A bold red throws a heavy warm cast over everything, including your face. The stronger the color, the more tint it pushes around.Gray. This one surprises people. Photography studios use gray walls because gray tells the truth -- no invented tint. But without warm lighting aimed at you, that truth isn't always flattering. Gray tends to drain warmth out of a face and leave it looking flat and washed out. Given how long gray has dominated bathroom design, a lot of people may be dealing with this every morning without knowing it.Makeup Gone Wrong [26:53]For anyone who wears makeup, a bad wall color doesn't just affect how you look -- it affects what decisions you make getting ready. If the wall casts a color onto your face while you're applying makeup, you're working with inaccurate information. Say the wall makes you look sallow and tired -- you compensate, adjust your color, add more than you normally would. But you're correcting for a problem the room invented. You walk outside into real daylight with makeup calibrated for a wrong starting point, and nothing looks right. Everyone else sees what's on your face. You were perfectly matched for your bathroom wall. That's the mismatch.Flattering Color Picks [31:15]Soft, warm neutrals. Warm whites, soft peach, muted pink, warm beige. These reflect a gentle warm glow onto skin that flatters nearly everyone. It's like standing in good morning light.Muted nature colors....

We dig into why the standing-up-means-no-tip rule makes sense, how COVID-era generosity quietly became the new default, and why getting prompted to tip at the pharmacy or grocery checkout feels so absurd. We break down the math that nobody questions anymore (why a $7 beer and a $17 martini earn the same buck), the European model where tips aren’t expected, and those creeping service fees stacking on top of tax. In this summer-ready episode of "Transmission Interrupted," host Jill Morgan sits down with Dr. Andi Shane, Division Chief for Pediatric Infectious Disease at Emory and Medical Director of the Special Care Unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, to tackle the itchy, the icky, and the often misunderstood risks of summer: bugs, bites, and bathrooms. As families gear up for vacations, outdoor adventures, and the return to school, Jill and Dr. Shane break down the real dangers posed by bug bites and creepy-crawlies, offering practical guidance to parents for preventing itching, infections, and accidental exposures. They discuss best practices for using insect repellents on children, why covering up is sometimes easier said than done, and the importance of checking kids (and pets) for ticks—along with what tick-borne illnesses to watch out for as changing climates shift the landscape of risks across the country. The episode doesn't shy away from common but uncomfortable realities like head lice, exploring why these unwelcome visitors are more gross than genuinely dangerous, and shares expert strategies for dealing with them calmly. Dr. Shane also covers hand hygiene, safe management of public restrooms, and the influx of “cooties” when kids return to school, offering memorable and sometimes hilarious tips for keeping families healthy through the literal and figurative messes of summer. Wrapping up, Jill and Dr. Shane emphasize the ongoing importance of vaccination, regular pediatric care, and practical steps every parent can take to minimize risks and avoid unexpected hospital visits. Whether you're heading to camp, beach, or just the local playground, this episode is your guide to surviving and thriving through bugs, bites, and bathrooms. Questions or comments for NETEC? Shoot us a Text.Episode #1357: Honda rides hybrid momentum toward bigger market share, Ford gets an AI-fueled stock boost from repurposed EV batteries, and Target bets family-friendly upgrades will drive customer loyalty.Show Notes with links:Honda says it's aiming for more than 9% U.S. market share in 2026 and thinks 10% is within reach as hybrids continue to surge. With gas prices climbing and EV demand cooling, the company says its flexible production strategy is helping it stay ahead.Honda finished last year with 8.7% U.S. market share, hit 10% in April of this year and still expects to grow sales 4% this year to around 1.5 million vehicles.Hybrids made up nearly a third of Honda brand sales in Q1, and the company is ramping up production and marketing around Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude hybrids.Despite tariff uncertainty, Honda says its North American manufacturing footprint protects it from major disruption with nearly 99% of vehicles built in-region.Honda says hybrids are now the sweet spot, expecting them to land in the “mid-to-low 30 percent range” of total sales this year as gas prices push more buyers away from pure ICE models.Ford stock is suddenly surging, not because of trucks, but because Wall Street is betting on Ford becoming an AI-era energy player. The company's new Ford Energy division plans to repurpose EV batteries into massive storage systems for data centers and utilities.Ford stock jumped 28% in two weeks after launching Ford Energy with a $2 billion investment aimed at powering AI data centers and utilities. The business will repurpose excess EV battery capacity into stationary storage systems, putting Ford into competition with Tesla and LG Energy Solutions.Investors are especially bullish on Ford's partnership with Chinese battery giant CATL, with one analyst valuing the new energy arm at up to $10 billion.Ford says it plans to deploy at least 20 gigawatt hours of battery storage annually, including a major supply agreement with energy company EDF starting in 2028.BNP Paribas analyst James Picariello summed up the shift saying: “It's hard to find another comparison on the OEM side of things with the exception of Tesla.”Target is betting that winning over busy families doesn't require flashy AI, it just requires cleaner bathrooms, smarter shopping carts, and fewer parenting headaches. The retailer says those small upgrades could create much bigger long-term customer loyalty.Target is investing $1 billion into customer experience upgrades, including 130+ store remodels focused on family-friendly improvements.New shopping carts feature larger cupholders, deeper child seats, and flat storage surfaces designed to make shopping easier for parents. The retailer says modernized bathrooms are a surprisingly important loyalty driver because “busy families” are now Target's core growth audience.Executives admitted Target lost focus in recent years and are now doubling down on creating “the most delightful experience in retail” for younger families.Gartner analyst Halle Stern said the smaller upgrades matter more than flashy tech: “The minor changes are making this huge difference.”Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

In this episode, Bryce sits down with Alvin Lui of Courage Is a Habit for a second round—and it gets into some wild territory. They break down what’s actually happening inside schools right now, especially in places like Maryland, where policies around “mental health,” inclusion, and education are creating serious controversy. From headlines about tampons in boys’ bathrooms to deeper conversations about how school systems shape beliefs over time, this episode goes beyond surface-level outrage. Alvin argues that the real influence isn’t coming from obvious curriculum—but from systems like counseling programs, social-emotional learning, and the language used around “kindness” and “empathy.” Bryce and Alvin dig into how those ideas are taught, how they evolve as kids grow up, and why many parents feel like they’re missing what’s happening until it’s too late. They also get into: Why some school policies spark reactions—and how those reactions are then used to justify more change The shift in discipline, bullying, and student behavior over the years What parents can actually do if they want more control over their child’s environment The bigger question of where responsibility starts—and where it shouldn’t be handed off Ready to JOIN THE FIGHT? What does it actually feel like to be on the cusp of retirement and wonder if you're doing it right? This week, Jean sits down with two listeners, Nancy and Melissa, who are both asking the same underlying question: How do I make sure I don't run out of money in retirement, while still actually enjoying my life? First, Jean talks with Nancy, 68, a soon-to-be retired nurse with $850K saved, a pension, and Social Security on the way. Nancy wants to renovate her bathrooms before she stops working, but she's torn between using her HELOC or tapping her nest egg.  Then Jean hears from Melissa, 53, who, along with her husband, has $1.2M+ saved across tax-deferred, Roth, brokerage, and treasury accounts, and wonders if she's taking on too much risk. Jean helps her zoom out, look at the full financial picture, and think through what a bucket strategy or annuity could mean for her peace of mind. Reign of Error 007: Birth Control, Bathrooms & Biblical Patriarchy: The War on Gender and Reproduction

Sarah Posner sits down with New York Magazine senior writer Sarah Jones to unpack the accelerating assault on transgender rights in Kansas and beyond. They trace how a new Kansas law retroactively invalidating updated gender markers on driver's licenses fits into a broader, decades-long Christian right strategy—one that cloaks theological convictions in the language of “common sense” and “biology.” From spiritual warfare rhetoric in statehouses to Supreme Court signals about religious motivation, Posner and Jones explore how anti-trans legislation operates as both a wedge issue and a cornerstone of a hierarchical gender ideology rooted in patriarchy, biblical literalism, and political calculation. They connect these state-level efforts to federal actions under Trump—from executive orders to agency guidance on bathroom bans—and examine how figures like Pete Hegseth and his mentor Doug Wilson frame masculinity, authority, and power. The conversation widens to consider how anti-trans politics intersects with abortion criminalization, punitive theology, and the rise of pronatalism across MAGA and NatCon spaces. They analyze the confirmation hearing of Surgeon General nominee Casey Means, whose blend of anti–birth control rhetoric, “sacred fertility” language, and pseudoscientific wellness ideology has sparked backlash—even from Christian right influencers like Erick Erickson, who denounced her as dabbling in witchcraft. Posner and Jones probe the uneasy coalition between evangelical patriarchy and MAHA-style new age conspiracism, asking whether this radicalized right-wing alignment can outlast Trump—or simply mutate into something more extreme. The episode closes with Posner's Anti-Doom segment, highlighting federal judges—some Trump-appointed—who are forcefully pushing back against unlawful immigration enforcement, reminding listeners that the constitutional order still has defenders. Sarah Jones is an award-winning senior writer for New York Magazine, where she covers religion and national politics. She serves on the editorial board of Dissent Magazine, and was previously a staff writer for The New Republic.
