Last week, the Salem City Council voted 6-3 in favor of accepting a $180,000 donation from the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Salem Main Street Association to address concerns about livability and crime. The donation will be used to double the size of the Salem Police Department’s Homeless Services Team from two to four officers. The team responds to unsanctioned homeless encampments and helps connect unsheltered people to wraparound services. In a letter sent to the city council, Salem police chief and the city manager, the business groups said they would consider making another $180,000 donation in six months after “evaluating the effectiveness of this investment.” The city council had already approved last month spending more than $600,000 to expand the size of the HST and have it operate seven days a week instead of four. The plan also includes adding mental health specialists to respond to certain emergencies and increase trash pickup to seven days a week. The donated funds will now help offset those costs. The council’s divided vote to approve that largely anonymous donation comes amid controversy over Salem Mayor Julie Hoy’s decision to join an effort to repeal HB3115. The state law requires local governments to keep regulations on camping on public property “objectively reasonable.” Salem Statesman Journal city reporter Whitney Woodworth joins us for more details.

Brian #1: The PSF has withdrawn a $1.5 million proposal to US government grant program Related post from Simon Willison ARS Technica: Python plan to boost software security foiled by Trump admin's anti-DEI rules The Register: Python Foundation goes ride or DEI, rejects government grant with strings attached In Jan 2025, the PSF submitted a proposal for a US NSF grant under the Safety, Security, and Privacy of Open Source Ecosystems program. After months of work by the PSF, the proposal was recommended for funding. If the PSF accepted it, however, they would need to agree to the some terms and conditions, including, affirming that the PSF doesn't support diversity. The restriction wouldn't just be around the security work, but around all activity of the PSF as a whole. And further, that any deemed violation would give the NSF the right to ask for the money back. That just won't work, as the PSF would have already spent the money. The PSF mission statement includes "The mission of the Python Software Foundation is to promote, protect, and advance the Python programming language, and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers." The money would have obviously been very valuable, but the restrictions are just too unacceptable. The PSF withdrew the proposal. This couldn't have been an easy decision, that was a lot of money, but I think the PSF did the right thing. Michael #2: A Binary Serializer for Pydantic Models 7× Smaller Than JSON A compact binary serializer for Pydantic models that dramatically reduces RAM usage compared to JSON. The library is designed for high-load systems (e.g., Redis caching), where millions of models are stored in memory and every byte matters. It serializes Pydantic models into a minimal binary format and deserializes them back with zero extra metadata overhead. Target Audience: This project is intended for developers working with: high-load APIs in-memory caches (Redis, Memcached) message queues cost-sensitive environments where object size matters Brian #3: T-strings: Python's Fifth String Formatting Technique? Trey Hunner Python 3.14 has t-strings. How do they fit in with the rest of the string story? History percent-style (%) strings - been around for a very long time string.Template - and t.substitute() - from Python 2.4, but I don't think I've ever used them bracket variables and .format() - Since Python 2.6 f-strings - Python 3.6 - Now I feel old. These still seem new to me t-strings - Python 3.14, but a totally different beast. These don't return strings. Trey then covers a problem with f-strings in that the substitution happens at definition time. t-strings have substitution happen later. this is essentially “lazy string interpolation” This still takes a bit to get your head around, but I appreciate Trey taking a whack at the explanation. Michael #4: Cronboard Cronboard is a terminal application that allows you to manage and schedule cronjobs on local and remote servers. TOC, some details, and a 10 page introduction are now available. Hoping for the first pass to be complete by the end of the year. I'd love feedback to help make it a great book, and keep it small-ish, on a very limited budget. Joke: You are so wrong!

Cc Madhya 15.170-277 Once you are facing Māyā, then you feel fear and you're disoriented, Budha. But if you're intelligent, ābhajet taṁ bhaktyaikayeśaṁ guru-devatātmā—you should turn back towards Kṛṣṇa through the medium of the spiritual master, who you should consider to be your worshipful deity and your very life and soul. The verse says so. The implication is that one becomes free from that sense of fear that arises from illusion. Like animals are afraid because they're in this existential state of feeling they could be killed at any minute—because they're in illusion. They think they're their body. Dvitīya means the living being thinks he's his body, there's something separate from Kṛṣṇa. So that fear is allayed by taking shelter of the spiritual master and giving one's full attention to Kṛṣṇa. But we discussed last time about the other kind of fear. In the prayers Prahlāda Mahārāja offers to Lord Narasiṁhadev, he says, "trasto 'smy ahaṁ kṛpaṇa-vatsala duḥsahogra-saṁsāra-cakra-kadanād grasatāṁ praṇītaḥ," that I'm not afraid of You, Lord Narasiṁha, like everybody else, but I am afraid of Your Māyā, and that I could fall back into it. So one should be afraid of that. And there's a lot of commentary about that in the Tenth Canto, Second Chapter, because it's mentioned that Devakī was afraid. And then Viśvanātha Cakravartī said, "Very good. You should be afraid. It destroys the anarthas when you're afraid of the material energy, but not the fear that comes from being an object of ignorance. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #sricaitanyacaritamrita #govardhanreadings #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Cc Madhya 15.277-302 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/15/ I walk into a temple, sometimes I look around and I'll think, like, why are they doing it like this? Why are they doing like that? Why are they offering flowers with no scent? or whatever thing I can find. And I remember Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi. You know, the last story in the Caitanya-bhāgavata, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi, who's a paramahaṁsa, he goes to Odana Ṣaṣṭhī, where the Lord gets new clothes. So the pujārīs had put new clothes on Him, but they're still starched, which means they were off the shelf. They just took them off the shelf and offered them to the Lord directly. And he was watching, and he became disgusted, "How dare these pujārīs dress the Lord with the starched garments that are off the shelf!" That night, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi had a dream that Lord Balarāma and Lord Jagannātha came to him, and they said, "How dare you criticize our pujārīs?" And in the dream, they started slapping his face back and forth. The next day, his face was swollen from being smacked. I remember that sometimes when I think, "Didn't they get the memo? It doesn't go there; it goes here." And I think, like, "Hey, these guys have a million times more devotion than you do. Don't try to second-guess who they are." But the reason I ask also is because if you're in a position to find fault, like if you're a temple president, you're free to find fault with—of course, you have to administer your advice systematically in such a way it doesn't disturb people's minds—but it's your duty to walk around and say, "How come there's a crack there?" Like Śivarāma Mahārāja, if you see him in Hungary, he walks around with a white glove, and he'll sweep his hand across a door top or whatever, and say, "Hey, clean this!" So you have to find fault in those cases, but you have to just fine-pick your battles. Like what you said in the beginning, it was one of the Gauḍīya ācāryas had once said. This is in recent times. He said, when asked by an outsider, "What is your religion?" He said, "My religion is to find fault with myself, find my own faults, and to rectify them." So that's a project. Cc Madhya 15.109-169 ------------------------------------------------------------ I was just thinking this morning, when I was chanting my japa, the first time I heard of the Hare Krishna mantra. As I really relish that memory, just hearing it and thinking, "That is really some mysterious thing they're doing." Then I remember the first time I said "Hari Krishna" was to the devotees. They were walking away from the Harinām on the UC Berkeley campus. I just happened to be down there taking a music lesson, walking with my brother, and we saw them walking away from the Harinām. One of them had a mṛdaṅga slung over his back. And to impress my brother, I shouted out to the devotee. I said, "Hare Krishna!" The devotee turned around, and he looked at us with such enthusiasm; he said, "Hare Krishna!" And it was almost written in his countenance that, "Okay, boy, you blew it because we own you now." My brother actually looked at me and said, "What did you do?" Although there's fine print, the fact of the matter is, it's very direct. Kṛṣṇa is in his name 100%, 110%, because, as Rūpa Gosvāmī says: vācyaḿ vācakam ity udeti bhavato nāma svarūpa-dvayam (Namaṣṭakam verse 6) dṛśaḿ tattvāndhānām api diśati bhakti-praṇayinīm (Namaṣṭakam verse 3) That is, he says, "Okay, Kṛṣṇa and his name are the same 100%," but he goes, "No, wait a minute. The Holy Name is 110%." Because he said, "Kṛṣṇa, we may leave Kṛṣṇa, turn our back on him, but the Holy Name comes after us, and the Holy Name is more merciful." He said, "That's the difference." He said, "Same, same, but," as they say in Thailand, "same, same, but different." So the Holy Name is same, same, but different, because it is same 100%. But then 110% means the Holy Name is more merciful than Kṛṣṇa, because he just enters into your ear. People walking down the street, they are defenseless. When we do Harinām, we watch, and we see even the dogs go by, and they're a little freaked out, usually, because kartālas are intense. But still, the Holy Name is going in, and we think, "Okay, doggy, we'll see you soon, somewhere." And then, the people—the looks on their faces! It's the greatest show on earth to see how the Holy Name is entering their ears, entering their hearts, and then rearranging everything with the first hearing of the name, wherever somebody is starting from, whatever platform. Then that process: it's effective. It's always effective. And even if you can't see it at first, just like radiation—you say, "I didn't feel anything"—but then the symptoms will come, because Kṛṣṇa is all-powerful. Cc Madhya 15-.42 -108 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/15/advanced-view/ ------------------------------------------------------------ As for being freed from all sinful reactions by chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa only once, one must chant the holy name without committing any offenses. Then chanting one name is sufficient to rescue a living being from all sinful reactions. Such a person who chants the holy name of the Lord offenselessly is very important and woshipable. Indeed, the nine devotional processes, beginning with śravaṇa and kīrtana, can all be attained at once if one simply chants the holy name of the Lord offenselessly. In this regard, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī states in his book Bhakti-sandarbha (173): yadyapi anyā bhaktiḥ kalau kartavyā, tadā; kīrtanākhya-bhakti-saṁyogenaiva. Out of the nine processes of devotional service, kīrtana is very important. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī therefore instructs that the other processes, such as arcana, vandana, dāsya and sakhya, should be executed, but they must be preceded and followed by kīrtana, the chanting of the holy name. We have therefore introduced this system in all of our centers. Arcana, ārati, bhoga offering, Deity dressing and decoration are all preceded and followed by the chanting of the holy name of the Lord — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. Sanātana Goswāmī was thinking of killing himself because he had sores on his body, and he was going to jump in front of the Jagannātha cart in the presence of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He didn't tell anybody, but Mahāprabhu, one day at the house of Haridāsa Ṭhākura, said to Sanātana Goswāmī, 'I don't approve of this.' He said, 'If I could have achieved Kṛṣṇa by dying, I would have done it millions of times already. As we get closer to Yom Kippur, the feelings of awe and trembling intensify. We are trying harder and harder to be better, to make teshuvah , but the list of averot is long—many we don't even remember we did. Bittul Torah, Lashon Hara, Onat Devarim —and the list goes on. We are afraid to be judged for our actions, just as we say in Tehillim : אִם־עֲוֹנוֹת תִּשְׁמָר־קהּ ה' מִי יַעֲמֹד "Hashem, if You will take all of our sins into account, who will be able to stand before You?" The pasuk in Mishlei (17:23) says: שֹׁחַד מֵחֵק רָשָׁע יִקָּח לְהַטּוֹת אָרְחוֹת מִשְׁפָּט Rashi explains that this means Hashem, so to speak, accepts "bribery" from the rasha and changes his judgment from bad to good. Similarly, the Midrash Shocher Tov on Tehillim (17) says: Hashem tells us, "My children, while the gates of tefillah are open, do teshuvah , because in this world I will accept bribery. But once I sit in judgment in the future, I will no longer accept it." The Midrash concludes that the time Hashem accepts shochad is right now—during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. It sounds like from the Midrash that the bribery Hashem accepts is teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah. Whereas in an earthly court, if the person on trial says he's sorry, it doesn't change anything—if he's guilty, he's guilty. But in Hashem's court, if the person says, "I'm sorry," then Hashem lets him off. However, the Chafetz Chaim explains, based on Chazal, that it goes much further than this. The Tomer Devorah says similarly: when a person has mercy on others, even though he was wronged by them, that brings the mercy of Hashem upon him, even though he did wrong to Hashem. When we overcome our evil inclination to take revenge, to bear a grudge, or to hate an individual that harmed us—even though he may deserve it—but instead we forgive, that is the bribery Hashem accepts. He will then give us mercy and blessing, even though we don't deserve it. During the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah we say: המלך המשפט . The Mareh Yechezkel asks seemingly, it would be better for us to say the usual: מלך אוהב צדקה ומשפט . Why would we switch now and only speak about Hashem being the King of mishpat, which is strict justice? The rabbi answered: all year long, we say that Hashem loves both tzedakah and mishpat. He loves giving us tzedakah, but He also loves justice being carried out, and we don't know which one He loves more. Now, during these days, we declare המלך המשפט —Hashem is the King over mishpat. He is the only ruler and decider about how the rules of mishpat will be carried out, and we are hoping that He will override the regular rules and use His power as King to pardon us. But that will depend on whether we give Him, so to speak, the ability to do so. And He told us how: we must overlook and forgive those who wronged us. A couple of hundred years ago in Lithuania, there was a family blessed with four boys who all became outstanding talmidei chachamim, each one a gadol b'Yisrael. The most famous of them was Rabbi Yechiel Michal Heller z"l, author of the sefer Amudei Or. He was a tremendous gaon. Each one of his brothers also wrote sefarim and served as rabbis leading massive congregations. Rabbi Yechiel used to sign his name " העלוב יעקב מיכל בן ר' אהרן "—"the downtrodden or humiliated one, Yechiel the son of Aaron." One of the rabbi's grandchildren related why he signed his name that way. Rabbi Yechiel's grandfather was an extremely wealthy man who traveled from city to city doing business, leaving his daughter in charge of his store. Many unscrupulous people were jealous of his wealth and spread a false rumor that his daughter had committed a terrible sin. When the time came for shidduchim, nobody in the community would marry her. She grew older, and nothing changed. Her father was distraught. They knew the truth—that she had done nothing wrong—but nothing they said could change people's minds. The father couldn't bear to watch his daughter grow older with no hope of a shidduch. He decided to inquire about a young man named Aharon Shmeisser, the son of a wagon driver. Aharon would sit near his father, and when the man who whipped the horse grew tired, Aharon was the backup. He knew no Torah and worked the lowest of jobs. But the wealthy man could not allow his daughter to continue suffering. He told his daughter his plan, and with no better alternative, she agreed. The wealthy man asked the wagon driver if he would allow his son to marry his daughter. At first he hesitated, but after some thought, he agreed, and after just one meeting the wedding date was set. On the day of the wedding, the bride whispered a tefillah to Hashem: "You know the truth that I am completely innocent. I believe this was all orchestrated by You, that this man is my zivug, and that there was no other way my father would have ever agreed to let him marry me. Therefore, I don't hold anyone accountable for this. I will not hate anyone or hold a grudge against them. But please, Hashem, give me children who will be outstanding talmidei chachamim ." Her prayer was answered. She merited to have four sons who became among the greatest chachamim of their time. She overlooked the wrong done to her and believed it was all from Hashem, and that opened the heavens to shower blessing upon her. This is why her son signed his name העלוב —for his mother, the aluvah. It was in her merit that all of his Torah came to be. The power of overlooking and forgiving is wondrous.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US Bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Just as Israel is set to approve the IDF's plans for the mission to conquer Gaza City, Hamas on Monday informed mediators that it accepted the ceasefire-hostage release deal proposal that was submitted to the group a day earlier by the Egyptians and Qataris. Sources said the proposal involves a 60-day pause and the release of 10 living captives -- in other words, a partial release deal, which Israel has seemingly stepped away from in the past few weeks. Magid weighs in with the backstory to the negotiation reboot and how Israel may respond. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced yesterday that it is launching a new system to enable families to reserve a box of aid in advance, to reduce the chaos surrounding its distribution sites that the UN says has led to the deaths of hundreds of aid seekers. This comes after other attempts, such as women’s-only distribution times, in an effort to serve more vulnerable populations. Magid tells us more. The US State Department on Saturday said it was halting all visitor visas for individuals from Gaza while it conducts “a full and thorough” review. The move to stop these medical-humanitarian visas came after Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and an ally of President Donald Trump, said on social media on Friday that the Palestinian “refugees” had entered the US this month. We learn about Loomer and how this post affected the visa program so far. Two former senior Biden administration officials -- Jack Lew, who served as US ambassador to Israel, and David Satterfield, who served as US envoy for Mideast humanitarian issues -- have revealed that it was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who asked US President Joe Biden last year to set up a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza to help deliver more aid. We hear highlights from their joint op-ed in Foreign Affairs magazine, including their thoughts on how the UN should cooperate with GHF. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates.
