The unconventional Christmas seems to be a theme for us this holiday season. Join us as we discuss this unique offering by director/writer Sean Baker and co-writer Chris Bergoch. Trans sex workers Alexandra and Sin-Dee are our two principal elves traversing the environs of a vibrant and gritty backdrop of L.A. in search of some comeuppance, and perchance a crumb of Christmas spirit. Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez give bitingly funny, authentic, and moving performances as the film's locus. Glee’s Josh Sussman is impossible to miss with his unique look which oft likens him to a possible Art Garfunkel son or a very young, much hipper, Larry Fine, in hair only. A Gleek, I recognized him immediately at a social soirée, bumping into him a couple more times over the past few years. Our interactions were brief, friendly, and perhaps a tad awkward. I didn’t anticipate this… one of the most enjoyable, easy, refreshing, inspiring, thought-provoking and fun conversations I’ve had. I knew there had to be a lot to him to garner the success he’s achieved, working consistently since starting, racking up an impressive list of credits, for a young man. Josh appeared in a number of shows my kids were addicted to, from the Suite Life of Zach and Cody, Drake and Josh (different Josh), Wizards of Waverly Place, Warren the Ape, to award-winning, mega-hit, Glee, which we watched together all through its run. From his beginnings as a Yeshiva student in Teaneck, NJ, Josh, obsessed with The Muppets, decided that he wanted to get into the TV screen to inhabit their world. I have no doubt his determination coupled with his hard work and impeccable work ethic manifested that dream. He still hasn’t met the actual Muppets, although he has met their masters. It’s only a matter of time. Josh appreciates the process––meticulous preparedness, from what seems simple, like knowing his lines (interning in a casting directors office early on, he learned that many, don’t), mapping out the location in advance to eliminate added stress, being on time and ready to roll, knowing when to speak and when to get out, being nice, not gossiping, be willing to go to any lengths, “Pain is temporary, film is forever.” He tells great stories to illustrate the point, like getting ridiculously drunk so he could throw up on actor/filmmaker, Chris Bergoch, in Tangerine. Josh didn’t add, but I will, being crazy talented has sure helped. He walked into Glee to do a small part in one episode, the second of the first season… he lasted five. He speaks with great admiration of Selena Gomez, the late Cory Monteith, Darren Criss, and Ryan Murphy. Lea Michele, well, she thought he was hot for her, so… Josh talked about rejection, in work and in life, about parts and girls he didn’t get… Bumble––dating, not dating, and being in the friend zone. He shared his mantra learned from Sylvester Stallone in Rocky Balboa, “It’s not how hard you hit, but how hard you can hit and keep getting up.” It’s clearly serving him. He sure knows how to book, I have no doubt the right girl will appreciate and beckon. There’s pearls of wisdom sprinkled throughout. Josh Sussman is one impressive fellow, available for film. TV, and dates. And, I trust, one day soon he’ll score the coveted gig, appearing with his beloved Muppets. HIStory making screenwriter and filmmaker, Chris Bergoch, was an entertaining, inspiring, informative, funny, Valentine. His host was a starving, manic, maniac, but he overcame. Ignore me and focus on this wunderkind, who starting making movies at age 9, with his mother behind the camera. There was never a Plan B. From NYU’s Film School to Greg The Bunny on Fox, starring Eugene Levy, Seth Green, and Sarah Silverman, to Indies: Starlet, Snowbird, Tangerine (guerrilla shooting on iPhone 5s), winning loads of awards along the way, leading to his current multi-award-winning feature (55 and counting), The Florida Project, earning Willem Dafoe, an Oscar nomination––Chris is laser-focused on telling the stories which intrigue and thrill him. Universal truths prevail through the mouths of babes who inhabit welfare hotels, trans hookers searching for their pimp, taxi drivers looking to score something they won’t find at home––all seeking what they don’t have. And, love. This is a man who writes what he sees, and through his exploration, comes to know. Chris offers invaluable insight on preparation, process, the pitch, collaboration, fearless pursuit of creative excellence, and authenticity, on screen, and off. Living his dream. I loved every minute of this, got so much out of it––if only someone would’ve fed me some of those chocolates and shut me up. Chris makes it worth putting up with me. At StandUp SpeakUp, we try to raise awareness around important social issues, so when Karla discovered the work of Chris Bergoch, she couldn’t wait to have him on the podcast.   Two of Chris’s biggest credits are Tangerine, a movie about a transgender sex worker who discovers her boyfriend and pimp has been cheating on her, and his latest, The Florida Project, about a young mom who resorts to prostitution to take care of her daughter. The Florida Project seemed so real that people have actually called the motel where the movie took place, asking how the characters were doing.    Chris gives us a look into his career journey thus far and insight about how the movies came to be.   Host: Karla Stephens-Tolstoy Producer: Stand Up Speak Up Apparel Editor and Co-Producer: Joel at East Coast Radio Creative   The Florida Project Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwQ-NH1rRT4 Tangerine Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALSwWTb88ZU   This episode contains music used under the CreativeCommons license: Rupert Blaise - What A Wonderful World
