On the twenty-sixth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister and KT join me in reviewing TUCKER AND DALE vs EVIL (2010), from writers Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgenson, the film is directed by Eli Craig. Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two kind-hearted but stereotypical-looking "hillbillies," head to their newly purchased vacation cabin in the woods for a relaxing fishing trip and some home renovation. Their peaceful getaway is interrupted by a group of college students who, due to a series of hilarious and increasingly gruesome misunderstandings, become convinced that Tucker and Dale are murderous backwoods killers. As the terrified college students attempt to "fight back" or "rescue" their friends, they accidentally cause a series of bizarre and bloody fatalities, leaving the baffled and innocent duo struggling to figure out why these kids are killing themselves all over their property. The film clocks in at 1 h and 29 m, is rated R and we caught it on Prime Video but you can find it on the Hoopla app as well as Hulu, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. The mystery is explored through the shifting perspectives of the children's teacher, an increasingly desperate grieving father, a troubled local cop, and other citizens whose lives are spiraling in the wake of the inexplicable tragedy. As fear and paranoia mount, these disparate characters are drawn into a chilling web of dark rituals and supernatural manipulation to uncover what truly happened to the missing children. The film clocks in at 2 h and 8 m, is rated R and we caught it in theatres but you can find it on HBO Max and to buy/rent on Prime Video. In a secluded hut deep within the Malaysian forest, a single mother and her two children's isolated life is shattered when they encounter a strange, mute little girl covered in mud. The girl repays their kindness with a grim prophecy: the family will all be dead by the next full moon, an omen that is confirmed when she ritually slits her own throat. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing MERCHANT IVORY (2023), from director Stephen Soucy, and writers Stephen Soucy and Jon Hart. The 2024 documentary "Merchant Ivory" explores the remarkable professional and personal partnership between director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant. It delves into their unique filmmaking process, often characterized by shoestring budgets and on-set drama, which nevertheless produced a string of acclaimed, literary-adapted films. Through interviews with James Ivory and numerous collaborators like Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves, Simon Callow, Vanessa Redgrave and others, the film celebrates their enduring legacy in independent and arthouse cinema. It also sheds light on their discreet romantic relationship and the "wandering company" they created over four decades. We caught the film on @tcm but it's also available to buy/rent on Prime Video. In which the Mister and Miss Angie join me in reviewing A ROOM WITH A VIEW (1985), based on the novel by E.M Forster and Oscar winning script by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the film is directed by James Ivory. The film follows young Englishwoman Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) on a transformative trip to Florence, Italy, with her prim cousin and chaperone, Charlotte (Maggie Smith). While there, Lucy encounters the free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands) and experiences a passionate kiss, which clashes with her strict Edwardian upbringing. Upon returning to England, Lucy becomes engaged to the intellectually snobbish Cecil Vyse (Daniel Day-Lewis), but fate continually brings her back into George's orbit. The film explores themes of societal repression versus individual passion, ultimately culminating in Lucy's choice between a conventional, stifling life and a more authentic, heart-led existence. We caught the film on @TCM but #SupportYourLocalLibrary and read E.M. Forster's novel first. The film clocks in at 1 h and 57 m, is unrated, is currently available on Tubi and HBO Max but it's also available to buy/rent on Prime Video.
