If there's one constant in the film industry, it's that the only sure way to improve a movie is to add copious amounts of cocaine, either behind or in front of the camera. If any movie proves this, it is certainly Cocaine Bear. Unleashed upon suspecting audiences after an incredibly effective marketing campaign, the bloody, drug-fuelled mayhem of the movie ironically serves as a sort of cinematic palate cleanser, offering a ridiculously fun escape from the drudgery of the real world. Stretching even the most liberal interpretation of the oft-invoked Hollywood mantra of "Based on a true story," Cocaine Bear is refreshing in that it makes no pretense of even trying to portray actual events, sticking mostly to the two things that make this movie such a fun ride: namely, the cocaine and the bear. Directed by the prolific Elizabeth Banks and including a colourful cast of oddball characters, Cocaine Bear is surely the kind of film that you want injected straight into your veins. Join your intrepid hosts as they break down the blood-soaked, drug-induced lunacy of Cocaine Bear. For if not to portray a wild animal out of its mind on cocaine brutally murdering people, then why was the medium of film even invented? Matt's Movie Lodgecast

The gravitational pull of the viral marketing campaign for Cocaine Bear sucked us into the theaters. That title! That poster! The memes! This horror comedy is based on a true story of a bear that ate cocaine in the 1980s in the wilderness of Tennessee. Elizabeth Banks directed this movie with a solid cast of Keri Russell, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale, and Ray Liotta (Rest in Peace). But this crazy movie wasn't the barrel of laughs we were hoping for, at least amongst this Lodgecast crew. We'll let you know how quickly the drugs wore off in this coked-up hawt take!

The universe has a sense of humor. I know this because right now, in theaters, I have the opportunity to find a marquee where the phrases COCAINE BEAR and JESUS REVOLUTION can sit side by side. What a time to be alive. And for a title so brashly blatant (here I go with the alliteration again, Lord) as COCAINE BEAR, I'd expect for the movie to be as simple as humanly possible. It's a bear. It does coke. It goes on a woodland rampage. Simple. I don't need a story about a single mom (Keri Russell) clashing with her preteen (Brooklynn Prince in a role that never ceases to make me feel old, because wasn't she just playing a precocious first-grader in THE FLORIDA PROJECT like...yesterday?) only for said girl to be kidnapped by the Cocaine Bear. I don't really need a story about a sad sack drunkard son of a mob boss (Alden Ehrenreich) whining about his ex to his best friend (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) while they track down the missing coke. I really don't need to know the escapades of a trigger-happy park ranger (Margo Martindale). Hell, if we can just let mob boss Ray Liotta spend 90 min as aviator-wielding Captain Ahab facing off against a drugged-up psycho black bear, I'd be set. But sometimes, we just don't get what we want. We get far, far less. And sometimes, people bring infants to the 10:45pm screening. --------------------------- Closing Song: "Sleep When Dead" - A Giant Dog --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode! --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/

This week the boys are joined by Ben Grimes, filmmaker and punk rocker who drinks Tequila drinks out of a Hydro Flask to keep it colder for longer and prevent the ice from melting LIKE A GENIUS AND A PRO. They discuss the new Elizabeth Banks-directed movie "18 Characters Develop Their Back Story in the Woods of Georgia". That's actually a Ben joke that we laughed at in the episode, we even laughed when John or he brought it back up later, but we all had a fun time in the theater, as did our audiences. So go see it. Or, if you don't, it'll be a rental in about a month, like M3GAN, also covered by us, which is not on Peacock literally the month after it came out in theaters. 2023, man. Anyway, just rent it at home in a month, pee during the back story parts, and have fun when the bear starts taking off limbs, because apparently all cocaine does to big animals is make them angry and possessed like a Floridian on bath salts cut with cocaine. Unlike me, who just talks really, really fast and gets really good at foosball and pool. Don't believe us? Follow us on the socials and reach out to us. While we probably wouldn't be thrilled if the characters played by Brooklynn Prince and Bria Vinaite in The Florida Project were our next-door neighbours, we absolutely loved watching them in this film. In this and in Tangerine, director Sean Baker has shown he really knows how to make an authentic and enjoyable movie with inexperienced actors. Here they're desperate people in impossible circumstances, but they're also making the most of a tough life. Who needs Disney World when they're this good at making their own fun! All the rookie actors are wonderful, but Willem Dafoe stands out too in one of his sweetest roles, a hotel manager who really cares about the little people who need a little help sometimes. So give us a break, lady, as the 455th Ellises' Analysis talks about Baker's modern-day version of the Little Rascals. Career Q&A with Willem Dafoe on September 26, 2017. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominated actor Willem Dafoe continues to make his mark in entertainment through a myriad of challenging roles, working alongside the industry's most respected talent. Dafoe will next be seen in Tommy Wirkola’s What Happened to Monday?, with Noomi Rapace and Glenn Close. This film is set in the future and in a world where families are limited to one child due to over population and follows a set of septuplets who must avoid being discovered by the government. Following that, he lends his voice in Adam Wingard’s Death Note with Nat Wolff. The film follows Light Turner (Wolff) who stumbles upon the ‘Death Note,’ a journal in which he can write anyone’s name and kill them at any time, in any fashion he wants. Dafoe plays the role of Ryuk, a shinigami or “death god,” who guides Light to use the Death Note and then watches chaos unfold. Late this year, Dafoe will be seen in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project opposite Bria Vinaite, Brooklynn Prince and Valeria Cotto. The film follows a 6-year-old and her friends who are homeless, living in extended-stay motels on the outskirts of Orlando, Florida. Dafoe plays ‘Bobby,’ the manager of the motel, whose job requires him to be a handyman, an office grind, a den mother, a father figure, and a law enforcer all at the same time. Originally premiering at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival acquiring rave reviews, A24 is slated to release the film October 6, 2017. After, Dafoe has Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, starring Jonny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dame Judi Dench. Adapted from the book Agatha Christie, the film follows a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into the thrilling mystery of thirteen strangers stranded on a train. Twentieth Century Fox will release the film November 10, 2017. Dafoe is currently in production for James Wan’s Aquaman opposite Jason Momoa and Nicole Kidman. Dafoe will be seen as ‘Nuidis Vulko,’ a key venerated academic and politician in Atlantis who comes from the generation before Aquaman’s. Exact details of Vulko’s role in the film are still being kept under wraps. Warner Brothers is slated to release the film December 21, 2018. Following, he will begin lensing for Julian Schnabel’s biopic At Eternity’s Gate, which follows the Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gough, (Dafoe) and the time he spent in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Most notably, Dafoe garnered critical acclaim for his Oscar®nominated supporting role in the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Shadow of a Vampire. The film is a fictionalized account of F. W. Murnau’s making of the classic vampire film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens. During production, the crew begins to have disturbing suspicions about their lead actor, Max Schreck, (Dafoe), who arrives onto set in full Gothic regalia, asserting that he is indeed a vampire.  He was also nominated for a Golden Globe®, Screen Actors Guild®, Critics Choice®, and won a Film Independent Spirit Award and Satellite Award on behalf of this performance. Prior to that, Dafoe also received critical acclaim for his Oscar®nominated supporting role in the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Oliver Stone’s Academy Award winning Platoon playing ‘Sargent Elias,’ one of the leaders of the US infantry platoon near the Cambodian border during the Vietnam War.

This week, its more EMMR. Sean Baker week continues with his major motion picture debut - The Florida Project. Baker moves 3000 miles away from the setting of his last movie to place this story in the Kissimmee/Orlando area of Florida - just outside of the Magic Kingdom. I remember the town being all aflutter about his production (and Willam Dafoe's performance) so I was looking forward to checking it out. Was I pleasantly surprised? Check out the episode to find out! The story centers around Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in a cage as the star of a struggling animal show at a suburban shopping center called the Big Top Mall & Video Arcade at Exit 8. Ivan's main schtick is to roar and look intimidating, but behind the scenes, he is a thoughtful and sensitive soul. Other talented animals under the care of beleaguered ringleader Mack include a baseball-playing chicken, a sassy poodle, a bunny, a seal, a parrot, and an elderly elephant named Stella, plus a stray mutt called Bob. Ivan befriends the young daughter of the mall cleaner who hands him supplies to draw, and it becomes something he takes an interest in doing, which has Mack seeing dollar signs to save his floundering circus attraction. An adorable baby elephant named Ruby arrives to become the latest attraction, under the tutelage and loving guidance of Stella. The drawing and painting, plus Ruby's arrival, trigger Ivan's memories of his childhood of freedom in the wild with his family, and Stella doesn't want Ruby to live a sheltered life as she has had. Ivan plans to break free and deliver Ruby to a life of freedom. Featuring Bryan Cranston, Ariana Greenblatt, Ramon Rodriguez, Owain Arthur as live actors. Voice work by Sam Rockwell, Danny DeVito, Brooklynn Prince, Angelina Jolie, Chaka Khan, Ron Funches, Helen Mirren.

We begin the series with the Lisko family moving across country, from Brooklyn to Erie Harbor, because Dad, Matthew Lisko played by Jim Sturgess, has been let go from his job as a journalist. Middle daughter, 9-year-old Hildie, played by Brooklynn Prince, is narrating, telling us that she too from a young age has always been a journalist and she fights for the truth. In episode one we are introduced to "the players." Aside from dad Matt and daughter Hildie, you also meet Hildie's older sister Izzy, younger sister Ginny, and mother Bridget. The family is settling into their new life in this small town when something shocking happens. Penny Gillis from down the street is found dead. This event launches Hildie into a whole investigation. She writes an article saying that she believes Penny has been murdered, and this really sets the town on fire. There is something off about this new town, Hildie knows it right from the moment they arrive and she is determined to get to the bottom of it. Through her research about Penny, she digs up some other things from her dad's and the town's past. We learn that Matthew grew up in Erie Harbor and hasn't come back for years, or wanted to, because his friend Richie was abducted in front of him when he was young. We are introduced to Kim Collins, the principal, and old friend of Matt's and Richie's, as well as Frank, who is an officer and seems to be like some-what of an ex friend of Matt's. Hildie feels like the town has clearly swept things under the rug, with both Richie's abduction and Penny Gillis's death. She, with help of a few new friends, end up cracking the case on Penny's death and we are left with a million and one questions. Second, everyone reviews THE RHYTHM SECTION (21:10), the Blake Lively action flick that’s raw and realistic, but it’s linear, predictable, and dumb.
