Jason Jorjani—philosopher, futurist, and author of Satanaeon—to explore a radical idea: that humanity is approaching the computational limit of our current system. Jorjani, who holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Stony Brook University (SUNY), argues that information, like mass and energy, can exert gravitational forces—and that we may soon reach a critical mass of data with catastrophic consequences. Could information density create a force similar to dark matter? This week sees the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Dresden on February 13-14, 1945. It was one of the most destructive of the Allies' late-war bombing campaigns over Germany. Somewhere between 22,000 and 25,000 people were killed and a famously beautiful city was leveled. It's been called an Allied war crime, and Kurt Vonnegut's famous novel “Slaughterhouse 5” reinforced that idea in the public mind for generations. But was it a war crime? Was it unnecessary? Professor Phil Nash enlightens us!

Frances Perkins was one of the most important Americans in the 20th century. She helped hundreds of people flee Nazi Germany and come to the United States when she was Secretary of Labor in the Franklin Roosevelt administration. As Hitler rose to power, thousands of German-Jewish refugees and their loved ones reached out to the INS—then part of the Department of Labor—applying for immigration to the United States, writing letters that began “Dear Miss Perkins…” A fascinating interview with Dr. Rebecca Graham. How exactly did Winston Churchill go about directing and managing first the Battle of Britain and then Britain's part in the wider war? Did he act like a CEO or more like a Chairman of the Board when dealing with the British government? Allen Packwood, the Director of the Churchill Archives Centre at the University of Cambridge, joins us to explain the decisions that Churchill had to make, and how that helps understand his leadership styles. David Ayers (Suicide Squad, The Beekeeper) directs this brutal war drama which takes place during the last days of World War II along the German front. We follow a crew riding within tank titled the titular "Fury" which is lead by Brad Pitt's grizzled veteran nick-named "Wardaddy." Pitt leads a stellar cast including Michael Pena, Shia LeBouf, Jon Bernthal and Logan Lerman, the latter of which plays Norman who becomes the audience avatar as he has just joined this crew and has never experienced combat before. What results is a grisly adventure featuring several intense combat sequences ALL depicted from the vantage point of this Sherman tank. Professor Philip Nash continues his excellent analysis of the famous Battle of Stalingrad. The grim complications in the details of the history of this battle give us perfect insight into the nature of warfare during this period. Stalingrad. Even just the name of the city conjures up images of a brutal, months-long battle that helped change the course of the war. Professor Nash discusses the background of the battle, Hitler's intent in attacking that part of the Soviet Union, and how the Red Army defended the area and built up the resilience to counterattack. Part 1 is fascinating, and will leave listeners yearning for Part 2. Episode 566.

Once Upon a Time in Nazi-Occupied France....A beloved filmmaker (Quentin Tarantino) directed his first epic period piece just LOOSELY (very loosely) based upon true events....meaning World War II. We follow several different characters all within France at the time including Shoshanna (Melanie Laurent) a Jewish movie theater owner, Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt), the leader of a small roving grope of Allied soldiers known as "The Basterds," Archie Hickock (Michael Fassbender) a sharp British soldier on a very dangerous spy mission, and the evil Colonel Hans Landa who is hunting for all of them. Landa is played by Christoph Walz in a breakout performance which would win him the first of two Oscars. (He would win his other for a supporting performance in the next Tarantino film.) As their stories converge, we witness plenty of treachery, deceit, and a generous share of Nazi scalps along the way. :o This film came out fifteen years ago this month, was a box office smash, and was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture.Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Professor Nash tells us about wives and lovers of leading Nazis, women who participated in Nazi crimes, and women who worked against the Nazi regime. We look at everyone from Eva Braun, Hitler's partner, to Sophie Scholl, one of the leaders of the White Rose resistance to the Nazi state. This episode shows that German women as a whole were a representative slice of Nazi ideology and practice, as well as opposition to Nazism. Episode 562.

After the mechanics die because of Shikishima failing to shoot the monster, an overwhelming amount of guilt weighs on him, especially when he returns to a ravaged post-war Japan and a homeless woman and the orphaned baby she cares for, moves into his home. Shikishima, now on a personal mission, teams up with a large group of war veterans to finally take down the monster known as Godzilla. Listen in and find out what we all thought!

When Pearl Harbor was attacked and brought the U.S. into WW2, it was a "day that will live in infamy". 94 percent of the U.S. population was opposed to joining in WW2. The President ran on the promise not to join. It all changed on Dec. 7th 1941. Why did it happen, how did it happen and did it really happen the way we have all been programmed to believe?Email us at: downtherh@protonmail.com

The Wannsee Conference was a meeting that took place on January 20, 1942, in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee. The conference was organized by high-ranking officials of Nazi Germany, and its main purpose was to coordinate the implementation of the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." The "Final Solution" was the Nazi plan to systematically exterminate the Jewish people in Europe during the Holocaust.During the conference, top Nazi officials, led by SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, discussed and formalized plans for the mass genocide of Jews. The decision to implement the "Final Solution" had already been made earlier, but the conference aimed to coordinate various administrative and logistical aspects of the genocide, such as the organization of transportation, the role of different government agencies, and the cooperation of various occupied territories in carrying out the extermination. The Wannsee Conference marked a pivotal moment in the Holocaust, as it demonstrated the systematic and bureaucratic nature of the genocide. The decisions made during the conference laid the groundwork for the horrific events that unfolded during World War II, resulting in the death of millions of innocent people. In this episode, we take a look at the participants, what they talked about and how it would go on to shape the plan that would inevitably become one of the worst holocausts in human history. If we forget our history, we are bound to repeat it and with the vitriol being launched from many these days, it's a good time to remember just exactly what happened and how systemic and vile it truly was. A letter written over two decades ago by Osama bin Laden has been making the rounds on social media, especially TikTok, and being used as evidence for the Palestinian side of the Hamas/Israel war. Gary reveals much more behind the letter and shows how Proverbs 18:17 applies: "The first to plead his case seems right until another comes and examines him."
