How group of Portland volunteers are saving and showcasing thousands of reels of 16mm film

When Dennis Nyback died in 2022, the Portland film archivist and programmer had amassed a collection of thousands of reels of films, whether they were black and white cartoons, 1960s-era commercials or educational films shown in classrooms. Nyback would share his eclectic finds through curated screenings at independent movie theaters not only in Portland, but also across the U.S. and Europe.  As reported by Oregon ArtsWatch, Nyback’s friends and fellow cinephiles faced a daunting challenge after his death to track down and sort through the thousands of mostly 16mm reels of film he left behind. That effort evolved into The Nyback Archive, with a group of volunteers working to catalogue Nyback’s collection and eventually make it available for public viewing and study. The team leading this effort began sharing some of the gems they’ve found through monthly theater screenings, like the “16mm Nyback Showdown” between dueling projectionists on May 6 at the Clinton Street Theater.  Joining us to talk about the value of preserving analog film in our digital age are Greg Hamilton, a film curator and co-founder of The Nyback Archive, and filmmakers and curators Ioana Cherascu and Garrett Schroeder. Hamilton organizes screenings of films from the archive through his Psychotron Afterschool Special series, while Cherascu and Schroeder curate films from the archive and other acquisitions through their Astral Projections series shown in Portland and beyond.

Sony has announced the FE 16mm F1.8 G (SEL16F18G), a premium G Lens that combines the expressive power of a high-resolution ultra-wide angle with high portability thanks to its compact, lightweight design, allowing creators to express their creativity in an extensive range of still and video shooting scenes. When paired with the latest Sony Alpha series cameras this lens is great for scenery, architecture, starry skies and more, whilst also offering outstanding close-up capabilities alongside precise and quiet AF (autofocus). Outstanding resolution at ultra-wide 16 mm angles of view The FE 16mm F1.8 G is an ideal lens for creating dynamic and spectacular wide-angle perspectives. The optical design includes two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements for stunning image resolution at all apertures. One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements suppress chromatic aberration right out to the image periphery, whilst an optimised coating minimises flare and ghosting. Supreme G Lens bokeh and outstanding close-up performance This new G Lens delivers stunning bokeh with its large F1.8 maximum aperture, 11-blade circular aperture. Close-up performance is excellent with a minimum focus distance of 0.15 m/0.5 ft and maximum magnification of 0.25x when using AF (0.13 m/0.43 ft, 0.30x for MF). All of this makes it possible to capture unique wide-angle perspectives with deep, exquisite bokeh. Large-aperture ultra-wide performance in a compact lens The use of aspherical lens elements in the FE 16mm F1.8 G, including Sony's high-precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) lens, has made it possible to create a full-frame ultra-wide lens that is a compact 73.8 x 75 ? mm (3 x 3 inch) and weighs just 304 g (10.8 oz). It is small, lightweight, and mobile whilst delivering spectacular imaging performance for a wide range of subjects including landscapes, architecture, starry skies, and more. Fast, precise autofocus supports high-level imaging Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensure fast, precise AF and tracking. A control algorithm developed specifically for the XD linear motors achieves enhanced response that largely negates delay and vibration that are likely to occur when driving a large-diameter focus lens group, for exceptionally quiet, low-vibration operation. All of this makes it possible for the FE 16mm F1.8 G to capture important moments when shooting active, fast-moving subjects. Refined, stable performance for video The FE 16mm F1.8 G's advanced lens technology reduces focus breathing for smooth video footage. The breathing compensation function provided in compatible Alpha bodies is also supported, and in-body Active Mode[ii] image stabilisation can make it easy to capture stable wide-angle video whilst walking. What's more, the new lens accepts standard 67 mm front filter and is easy to balance on a gimbal. Comprehensive control and solid reliability A focus ring, focus hold button, focus mode switch, aperture ring, and iris lock switch are provided and alternative functions can be assigned to the focus hold button. The aperture ring provides hands-on control, while a click ON/OFF switch adds versatility, and a Focus mode switch allows instant autofocus/manual switching. Lastly, a dust and moisture resistant design[iii] and fluorine front-element coating maximises reliability and durability. Pricing and Availability The FE 16mm F1.8 G will be available in April 2025 for approximately €1,000 EUR at a variety of Sony's authorised dealers. A product video on the new FE 16mm F1.8 G can be viewed here. ?For detailed product information about FE 16mm F1.8 G please visit here. IFH 777: Carving Her Own Path: Kansas Bowling on Confidence, Creativity, and the Magic of 16mm Film

The craft of filmmaking is as much about the soul as it is about the frame. In today's conversation, we sit down with Kansas Bowling, a maverick filmmaker who began charting her creative course at just 17 years old. As the first graduate of the Troma Institute for the Gifted, Kansas burst onto the scene with her debut feature, B.C. Butcher, a cavewoman slasher filmed on 16mm. From that bold beginning, her journey has only intensified, guided by a vision both rebellious and deeply personal.Kansas embodies the heart of artistic defiance, carving her path outside the confines of conventional education."I thought it would be easier to just make a movie than go to film school," she reflects, and her success vindicates her instincts. Her philosophy is one of doing: creating without overthinking, trusting her voice, and stepping into the arena without waiting for permission. Her work ethic shines through her portfolio, from feature films to over 20 music videos, all captured on her beloved 16mm film.Kansas opens a window into her creative process. For her, filmmaking is as much about confidence as it is about technical skill. "Directing is just telling people what you want to see. Everything else, you can learn along the way." This candid wisdom is refreshing, cutting through the mystique often associated with creative mastery. With humor and humility, she explains her preference for shooting on film, emphasizing its "timeless look" that digital can never replicate.Despite the beauty of her craft, Kansas has faced challenges that mirror the rawness of her stories. From navigating the loss of her Instagram account due to a controversial post, to fielding inappropriate offers as a female filmmaker, she moves forward with resilience. "People always send me horrible scripts where the whole thing is just a giant sex scene," she shares, laughing off the absurdity. Yet, she balances these experiences with genuine collaborations, such as her role in The Electra Complex, a project she describes as "the most well-written screenplay I've ever read."When asked about her influences, Kansas rattles off a list of cinematic gems: F for Fake by Orson Welles, Midnight Cowboy, and the Italian classic Don't Torture a Duckling. These films, she notes, have a unique authenticity—a quality she strives to infuse in her own work. For Kansas, filmmaking isn't about mimicking others; it's about harnessing inspiration while remaining true to her distinctive voice. As she wraps up production on her second feature, Kansas is also directing multiple music videos, preparing for a shoot in Miami, and starring in a major project. Her days are packed, yet her focus remains sharp. The secret to her productivity? She simply follows her passion. "If you see a film in your head, just go out and make it," she advises, encouraging budding creatives to trust their instincts and take action.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Film Comment just happens to be next-door neighbors with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, whose film and video collection is filled with treasures. On August 31, Film Comment Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited our neighbors over for a special, Labor Day–themed screening of 16mm shorts from the NYPL's collection. The program was curated by Elena Rossi-Snook, the film specialist at the library, who chose four fascinating shorts that captured microhistories of labor organizing across different industries in the '60s and '70s. The films offered a window into the history of the American labor movement and also spoke to the worker struggles currently roiling the film industry. To dig into the films and these themes, Devika and Clint sat down after the screening with Elena and filmmaker Brett Story, who reflected on her own experience making a forthcoming film about unionizing efforts at an Amazon facility in Staten Island. FPX Nickel (TSX-V: FPX, OTCQB: FPOCF) just announced and closed a $16 million strategic equity investment from major global stainless steel producer Outokumpu. FPX has issued 26,800,000 common shares in the capital of the company to Outokumpu at a price of C$0.60 per common share, for gross proceeds of C$16,080,000. Upon completion of the private placement, Outokumpu now owns approximately 9.9% of FPX's issued and outstanding common shares on a non-diluted basis. CEO Martin Turenne stated: ““This strategic investment by Outokumpu represents a significant technical validation of FPX's Baptiste Nickel Project, and underscores Canada's critical role as a supplier of choice to allied industrial partners in Europe and the United States, Outokumpu is a large and highly-regarded global operator, with a robust track record of producing the world's most sustainable stainless steel, and is one of the largest single consumers of nickel in the world. Our partnership with Outokumpu testifies to Baptiste's potential to produce a premium nickel product that can bypass the intermediate smelting stage, thus becoming a highly sought-after feedstock for the responsible production of low-carbon finished products in multiple consumer and industrial markets, including stainless steel. FPX is pleased to be Outokumpu's preferred partner as they look to secure the sustainable, long-life nickel units which are best aligned with their strategic objectives.” 0:00 Introduction 1:24 Outokumpu invests $16mm into FPX Nickel 3:01 Why Outokumpu wanted to invest in FPX 4:46 Drawbacks to doing deal with a stainless steel partner? 6:55 FPX's low-cost renewable energy source 9:03 Electrified mining fleet=even lower carbon emissions 10:26 Advancing through the mining development cycle 13:05 Lithium stealing nickel's luster? 15:01 Hunting for “nickel elephants” with JOGMEC 18:42 $33mm in the treasury 20:32 “We may never have to do a traditional capital raise again” Company website: https://fpxnickel.com/ Press release found here: https://fpxnickel.com/news/ FPX Nickel Presentation: https://fpxnickel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/FPX-Presentation-Q2-2023-v1.pdf Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 FPX Nickel is an MSE sponsor. Growing up is rarely easy....On this very special episode we are getting the honor of diving into some incredibly beautiful Can-Con coming of age storytelling which is making it's debut at the TIFF Bell Lightbox tonight with some Q&A's and guests in attendance.  It's time for 'The Maiden'.Shot in glorious 16mm film, 'The Maiden' is a beautifully atmospheric mediation on growing up and all the challenges that it entails.  When a day of youthful abandon turns tragic, a new world opens for three suburban teenagers. Best friends Colton (Marcel T. Jiménez) and Kyle (Jackson Sluiter) skateboard, swim in a ravine, tag bridges, and pick flowers for a cat's burial until a fatal accident changes everything. Meanwhile, Whitney (Hayley Ness) feels her best friend slip away into the world of boys and parties. When their paths cross, time slips, boundaries dissolve and what was certain ceases to exist. Shot in Alberta, 'The Maiden' is very much a film of its place that couldn't have taken place anywhere then in our own beautiful country.  I had the unique pleasure of sitting down with writer/director Graham Foy to talk about the origins of the story, shooting on film and so very much more.
