Poles apart - and not the dancing kind! Anora won the 2024 Palme d'Or at Cannes and five out of six categories at the 2025 Academy awards including Best Original Screen Play and Best Film. Plus, it was nominated for a multitude of other awards and won its fair share. On Rotten Tomatoes it has an aggregated rating of 93%. That's impressive. However, we disagree about What Went Right. I saw how the writer director crafted a pessimistic story arc combined with a negative character arc. Valerie believes that nothing went right in this movie because of the characters, dialogue, and lack of originality. Ross Brodar joins The Film Situation for a wide-ranging conversation about filmmaking, New York stories, and the strange overlap between cinema and real life. Ross has worked as a locations manager on acclaimed films including ANORA, MARTY SUPREME, and projects with directors such as Sean Baker, James Gray, and Josh Safdie. In this episode, Ross breaks down the art and logistics of location scouting, transforming real-world environments into cinematic spaces, and collaborating with visionary directors and production designers. The conversation also dives deep into Ross's gripping documentary The Linchpin of Bensonhurst, which chronicles the unbelievable life of Dominic Montiglio, a Vietnam veteran, artist, singer, and former associate of the infamous DeMeo crew tied to the Gambino crime family. Ross shares how he met Dominic by chance, ended up living with him for years, and spent over a decade documenting his life story. Along the way, Zef and Ross discuss New York in the ‘80s and ‘90s, CBGB's, Roseland Ballroom, collecting money for Sicilian fish markets, and why some true stories are ultimately stranger than fiction. Ross also shares one of his favorite movie scenes of all time: the iconic “Tears in Rain” sequence from BLADE RUNNER. After being the lead sex work consultant on the film Anora, Andrea Werhun tapped that film's writer-director Sean Baker to executive produce her new autobiographical hybrid documentary. Modern Whore is part-talking head, part-reenactment and part-slap stick comedy, telling Andrea's story from student to escort to exotic dancer. She sits down with Tom Power to talk about why she doesn't see herself as a victim or a villain, but rather a member of a community — and service industry — whose voices are rarely heard.

Most independent musicians trying to break into sync licensing are focused on the wrong problem. They're concerned about mix quality, metadata, and whether their instrumental version is ready. And those things matter. But according to Chris SD, founder of Sync Songwriter, they're not what's standing between your music and a placement in film or television. The real barrier is access — and access comes from relationships, not submissions. Chris built his reputation over years of networking, conferences, phone calls, and showing up in person — and once literally taking a music supervisor to a beach picnic. Those relationships are now the foundation of what he offers his students: not just sync education, but direct introductions to the gatekeepers who make placement decisions. Two of his students had five songs placed in Anora, the film that won multiple Oscars in 2025. His take on how that happened is straightforward — they had relationships with the supervisor, and theirs was the right music for the project. In this conversation, Chris shares what sync-ready actually means (and why production is the easier part of the problem), why writing for your fans beats writing for sync every time, how he built trust with music supervisors that now extends to his students, and why AI's impact on the sync landscape isn't as dire as many independent artists fear. Nicole Bazuin first encountered Andrea Werhun on the set of a music video she was directing, in search of Go Go Dancers who'd be willing to participate. At first meet, the two developed what Bazuin calls "a creative crush," compelled to work together on several projects since. What resulted from this affinity for each other's art was a self-published book titled "Modern Whore" based on Werhun's experiences as a sex worker in Toronto. But their collaboration didn't end there. With more story to tell, Bazuin and Werhun teamed up once again, bringing their feature film adaptation of their first collaboration to life. "Modern Whore" the movie centres Werhun's story in this hybrid documentary, where she acts as both narrator and the lead, re-enacting her journey in a field that society exclusively villainizes or victimizes. On this episode of the VIFF Podcast, we speak with Bazuin (who wrote, directed, and edited the project) on creating a new feminine archetype. Not a femme fatale, but a femme vitale, a woman whose life is sexy, but contains multitudes in self-love and community. A movie that is told through a specific lens, being Andrea Werhun's first-hand accounts in sex work, Bazuin speaks to the beauty of how conversations evolve once the lens is up, getting Sean Baker on board during the height of the "Anora" fandom as Executive Producer, and how cinema has the power to change the conversation. This podcast is brought to you by the Vancouver International Film Festival.Presented on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.

They need a better plan… Narrator: Male Story Begins: 3:42 Plenty to Share Excerpt: With the wagon ready, Allie, Anora, Mr. O'Leary, Mrs. Lewis, and Daisy set off down the neighborhood streets. The girls took turns pulling the wagon's handle, feeling proud to share the garden's goodness. At the first house, Allie rang the doorbell and Anora waved. It's Oscars Weekend! 1999 was a weird year in Oscar history, as the awards held that year saw one of the most controversial Best Picture wins ever (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE) and the awards held the following year honoring the awards of 1999 gave the Best Picture Oscar to a film that, well, has not aged well at all (AMERICAN BEAUTY) So to mark the weekend, we took some time to discuss those two films and their legacies and discussed our picks for some of the worst Best Picture wins in recent history. We talk FORREST GUMP, BRAVEHEART, ANORA, CRASH, and more!

Anora and Julia have a sleepover together at Anora’s house. Together they learn that the rain is not so scary after all. Hello everyone! We hope you enjoyed our new stories this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Stormy Music,” and we'll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Female Story Begins: 3:38 Stormy Music Excerpt: Julia sat inside the fort, looking around at all of Anora's colorful blankets, and wrapped herself up in the edge of one of the blankets. The fort was small but cozy. She started to say something to Anora, when the girls heard a boom! from outside. Julia froze at the sound of the loud rumble of thunder. That first thunderclap was quickly followed by several bright flashes of light and more thunder. Then the rain began falling in earnest. The two girls could hear the heavy raindrops pounding against the roof of the house. Julia pulled the blanket over her head to hide. James Cameron-Wilson can't recall another week where the top six UK films are all holdovers, with The Housemaid returning to #1. #9 is the ironically-titled Mercy with Chris Pratt a man who has 90 minutes to convince an AI judge that he didn't kill his wife. Set in real time, it is mechanical but James was drawn in by its moral arguments. #13 is the adaptation of best-seller H is for Hawk with a brilliant Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson. It is a beautifully-crafted film but doesn't have a strong storyline or conflict. While not bored, James did get impatient at times. On Netflix is the Taiwanese-set Left-Handed Girl, written by Anora's Sean Baker. The tale of a mother and two daughters moving to Taipei is filmed entirely on an iphone. With great performances, this guerilla style of filmmaking gives it an immediacy and the movie is a real gem. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With the Oscar's looming, Nadeem wanted options for "...movies that weren't nominated for Best Picture Oscars but should've been" and Chat GPT suggested the 2006 dystopian thriller, "Children Of Men" for the next movie review. Mita and Nadeem play No Guts No Glory for the upcoming Oscar nominations. Nadeem finds another reason to talk about "Anora".

The penultimate regular Empire Podcast of the year is here, folks (don't worry, there are specials galore on the way), and it's a belter. Guest-wise, we have more goodies under the tree, as Jamie Graham talks to longtime collaborators Shih-Ching Tsou and Sean Baker (the director of Anora) about Tsou's directorial debut, Left-Handed Girl, which can be seen on Netflix; [25:27 - 41:51 approx] and Chris Hewitt has lovely chats with Wake Up Dead Man suspects, Daryl McCormack and Cailee Spaeny, [1:04:42 - 1:19:44 approx] and the legendary James L. Brooks, who returns to directing this week with Ella McCay. [1:40:42 - 1:54:01 approx] Either side of that little lot, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Beth Webb for more Christmas movie shenanigans, including a discussion of their favourite Christmas movie songs, and where they'd like to spend Christmas if they were in a movie. You'll be staggered to know that a certain plaza in LA gets a mention. The team also talk about the Golden Globe nominations and the potential Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. (this episode was recorded before the Supergirl trailer launched, sadly), and they review Wake Up Dead Man (again), Eleanor The Great, Goodbye June, and Fackham Hall, which sees an Empire Podcast first. You'll have to listen to find out what that is. Enjoy!
Taiwanese filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou traces her path from a strict upbringing in Taipei to directing Left-Handed Girl, Taiwan's 2025 Oscar submission for Best International Film, and now streaming on Netflix. After years working alongside Sean Baker, the four-time Academy Award winner known for Anora, Tangerine, and The Florida Project, and her creative partner since they co-directed their first feature Take Out, Shih-Ching steps forward with her solo directorial debut.Shih-Ching and Baker wrote the script for Left-Handed Girl in 2010, but financing challenges kept the project on hold for more than a decade. Principal photography finally began in July 2022, a delay she now views as part of the film's natural evolution. The story draws from her experience growing up left-handed in a culture with rigid expectations for girls, and its emotional specificity has already connected with audiences around the world.Shot on an iPhone 13 with Beastgrip anamorphic lenses, the film captures Taipei's night markets with stripped-down realism influenced by Dogme 95 and Lee Chang-dong's Oasis. Shih-Ching worked with a small mobile crew, created the soundscape herself, and shaped the edit with Baker, whose instinct for editing performances she considers unmatched. After premiering at Cannes Critics' Week, Left-Handed Girl traveled the global festival circuit before Netflix acquired most territories, followed by theatrical releases in Taiwan, New York, and Los Angeles. Now representing Taiwan internationally, Shih-Ching reflects on stepping into visibility after decades behind the scenes. Her advice to filmmakers: trust your voice, avoid trends, build community, and keep going. Some films take time, and recognition often arrives later. What Movies Are You Watching? November is finally the time to get to this year's Best Picture Oscar winner and here in episode #695, the talk/rant is indeed about "Ani". Somehow, auteur Sean Baker tied Walt Disney's record by winning 4 Oscars in one night while foul-mouthed fireplug Mikey Madison won Best Actress as well. She and Yura Borisov are two of a half-dozen people giving strong performances in Anora, the Russian-centric dramedy that gets funnier in what is also a repetitive, way-too-long second half. You'll probably find this monologue to be controversial, but answer this: what is this movie about? Is it just a crass Pretty Woman? Well, in any case, don't get married to the stupid idiot son of an oligarch. Just keep on strippin' for a livin' and swearing when you're really mad because feathers will be ruffled in this show that's all about Anora. If there's been an episode in recent memory that should elicit more feedback than this one, name it. Try an email (haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com). As Summer comes to a close, we're celebrating some of the most widely acclaimed voices who shaped this past year, from film to theater, to cooking and the written word. First, one of the year's defining writers, Pullitzer Prize-winning Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha speaks to Christiane about his award-winning poems and the dire conditions his family members continue to face in Gaza since he managed to escape. Then breakout star and Oscar winner Mikey Madison talks about playing a Brooklyn sex worker in "Anora" and how she prepared for the role which won her Best Actress at the Oscars. Also, three-time James Beard nominee for Best Chef, Iranian-born Nasim Alikhani discusses her contemporary spin on Iranian cuisine, her journey to the U.S. and what it was like cooking for the Biden White House. Plus, actors Jessica Hecht and Bill Irwin, stars of "Eureka Day," talk to Christiane about the Broadway play that satirizes vaccine skepticism and took home the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
