Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 36 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the latest film in their William Friedkin series, Bug (2007). Moving away from his early 2000s action thrillers era, Friedkin set his sights on a project of much small scale, as he saw a play by writer/actor Tracy Letts that blew him away. Set mostly in a single location, motel room, Bug follows Agnes (a fantastic Ashley Judd) as she begins a new relationship with Peter (an excellent Michael Shannon), a stranger that turns unstable and unpredictable as layers of his past unfold and we start to see the lines of what is real and what is fake collide. With this, Friedkin creates an effective paranoid thriller with stellar performances and a scorching good ending. Ryan and Jay break down what they like about the film, the careers of both Judd and Shannon, the wild choices made by Harry Connick Jr. with his work in the film, how the film handles PTSD, and once again discuss the great film year that was 2007. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h35m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series covering the films of William Friedkin with a review of his next film, Killer Joe. You can stream the film on Amazon Prime Video. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. The film stars Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Lynn Collins, Brían F. O'Byrne, and Harry Connick Jr.Bug debuted at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival before being purchased by Lionsgate, which released the film the following year in May 2007. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its intensity, directing, acting, and take on paranoia, but were polarized about its writing, in particular the film's ending. Friedkin and Letts collaborated again as director and writer on the 2011 film Killer Joe.”NEXT WEEK: Singapore Sling (1990)Jon Nix's website: https://www.jonnixfilm.com/Jon Nix's Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonnixfilmJon Nix's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonnixfilm/Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

Family Plot: William Friedkin's Film of Tracy Letts's Killer Joe This week Ibrahim & I remember the iconic filmmaker, William Friedkin. Friedkin was director of numerous classic films including: The French Connection (1971), The Exorcist (1973),  Sorcerer (1977), and To LIve and Die in L.A. (1985). His career would see numerous hits and misses, however many would agree that it ended with one of the strongest (and easily the most polarizing) films of his career . . . the Tracy Letts scripted (from his stage play) Killer Joe. Troubling material and numerous explicitly violent scenes make this film a struggle (albeit incredibly rewarding) to get through. With an powerful titular performance from Matthew McConaughey and an incredible supporting cast including: Emile Hirsch, Thomas Hayden Church, Gina Gershon, and Juno Temple, this is - arguably - one of the best films 2011 and the decade. Take a listen and see if you agree with our impressions of this overpowering film. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Dan and Conrad find themselves itching compulsively while padding around in a tinfoil-covered motel room searching for aphids. Yes, we're revisiting Bug (2006), the late William Friendkin's adaptation of Tracy Letts' play starring Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Lynn Collins and Harry Connick Jr. It's an intense psychological thriller set largely in a single room focusing on two lonely outcasts who go crazy in love... literally. Or maybe they really are the focus of a giant conspiracy involving medical experiments, child abduction, genetically modified insects and one giant mother super bug. We picked this one out of the oubliette before the sad news of the director's passing, so this comes as an unplanned but timely retrospective on the film Friedkin called his most intense piece of work. Michael Shannon is an Oscar-, Tony- and Emmy-nominated actor who, the night before this conversation, sang R.E.M. songs at the Chicago club Metro. He's multitalented, thoughtful and fearless, with a commitment to Chicago theater that doesn't wane no matter how high his profile rises. In this probing, good-humored on-stage conversation at the club Space, Shannon couldn't discuss his prominent film and TV work due to the SAG-AFTRA strike against Hollywood's producers, so he went deep in other areas, such as: his early ping-ponging between Kentucky and Chicago's North Shore; his repeated path-crossings with Tracy Letts; how his family life inspired his direction of the upcoming indie film, Eric Larue; what he did when only two audience members showed up for a Hurlyburly performance; what he thinks of the strike; and whether he preps for a concert as if it's another role. He also performs two original songs that—spoiler alert—are awesome.

His career has given him the chance to work closely with icons of show business like Mike Douglas and Audrey Hepburn, for which he won an Emmy for "Gardens of the World." Among the shows he's produced are "The People's Choice Awards," "Entertainment Tonight," "Jenny Jones," "The Mike Douglas Shows" as well as Larry King specials. When he retired to Ojai 18 years ago, he was shanghaied back into the work by local impresaria Joan Kemper for OPAT, including "Yes, Virginia," "I Do! Crowner has worked around the world, including Ukraine in 2017, helping them produce talk shows. We talked about Ojai's arts scene (his wife Kyle and daughter are artists), history, nostalgia cycles, the Golden Age of Television among other topics. We did not talk about Edward Norton's acting choices, Asian birds of prey or Nigerian jollof recipes. Lady Bird was a perfect way for Greta Gerwig to start her directing career. She got to make a movie based on her own life, set in her home city of Sacramento, with a young woman in the lead role, which succeeded at the box office and was beloved by critics. Mic drop. A huge plus is that Gerwig's caustically funny flick has an atypical ending to a coming-of-age story, contrast to the easy answers these kinds of movies tend to serve up. Saoirse Ronan is tremendous (this is nothing new) as the prickly, Sacramento-hating high-schooler who renamed herself to the dismay of her ultra-passive-aggressive mother. Laurie Metcalf is great as that mother, as is Tracy Letts as Ronan's father. Really, the whole cast in Lady Bird is something else. Austin Pendleton might be best known for “My Cousin Vinny,” or “What's Up Doc?” but the 82 year old actor, director, playwright, and teacher is a one-man theater institution. It almost seems like there isn't a great play that he hasn't performed or directed, somewhere, in his 60+ years in the business, and he's not slowing down in the slightest. In this epic, 90 minute episode, what Meryl Streep said of Pendleton will ring true—“there's no line between the man and his work.” He talks about his latest performance, in the celebrated new Tracy Letts play “The Minutes,” then takes us back half-a-century to the the first production of “Fiddler On The Roof,” and tells a few incredible stories of working with the great Jerome Robbins. I ask him how teaching feeds his acting work. He shares some important lessons he's learned from his teachers (like Uta Hagen, Bobby Lewis, and Elia Kazan), legendary actors (like Jo Van Fleet and Kim Stanley), and disasters (like when a horrifically bad review kept him away from substantial roles for 7 years). He leaves us with a vow he made in 1958, which he still lives by, that just might be the secret to his longevity in this emotional roller-coaster of a profession. Plus much more! Sit back and let this great sage of the stage take you on a journey through the life of an actor in a deep, enduring love affair with the work.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

One of the favorite movie genres amongst Lodgers is the all but defunct erotic thriller genre. Yet at the ripe age of 81, director Adrian Lyne is back with a new erotic thriller to hopefully revive the genre he popularized with classics like Fatal Attraction (1987), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Unfaithful (2002). Adrian Lyne's new film, which is his first in 20 years, is called Deep Water and it stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas as a troubled couple. A supporting cast includes Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly, and Jacob Elordi. After many delays in release, the movie got dumped on Hulu back in March when we watched it. We'll let you know if Lyne delivered another erotic thriller classic, or if he's lost a step in the 20 years he's been away. The movie is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith.
