Guiding Question: What kind of spirituality actually works in real life—and how do the cross and the Holy Spirit make it possible? Summary: Robert Lewis dives into the heart of “real-world spirituality” through Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 2. Speaking to the sophisticated, style-obsessed Corinthians, Paul came not with flair or polished rhetoric but with a plain and simple message centered on Christ crucified. His lack of impressive speech was deliberate—it was the cross, not charisma, that carried power. Robert unpacks two essential pillars of life-transforming faith: Deeply Embrace the Cross – Real spirituality starts with dying to self. Without the cross, compromise creeps in, and spiritual growth stalls. Like the Corinthians, many believers today live forgiven but powerless lives because they resist the daily dying that unleashes resurrection power. Robert illustrates this with compelling stories—from a man who found freedom and generosity after surrendering financial control, to a broken father-son relationship healed by humility and repentance. The point: no death, no power. But on the other side of the cross is life, healing, and glory. Deeply Engage the Holy Spirit – Beyond self-denial, real spirituality includes a dynamic, intimate partnership with the Holy Spirit. He reveals God's thoughts to us, offers conviction, direction, and encouragement, and empowers discernment. Without the Spirit, believers grow spiritually dull, operating like a spiritual rover on Mars—barely receiving God's signal. But with the Spirit, believers gain wisdom, spiritual insight, and intimacy with God. Robert closes with two reflective questions for listeners: Where do you need to die to yourself? Do you want to be closer to God? He urges listeners to begin each day by surrendering to the cross and inviting the Holy Spirit in—plain and simple. Key Takeaways: Real spirituality isn't flashy—it's crucified and Spirit-filled. Without dying to self, we will always compromise God's best. The cross leads to spiritual power, freedom, and relational healing. The Holy Spirit enables daily intimacy with God and insight for living. Mature believers experience both the cost and the glory of following Christ. We return to an earlier sermon for this lively reading, preached during the heady days at Exeter Hall, when Spurgeon was still something of a shock to the London scene. This is a sermon on conformity to Christ Jesus according to the divine plan and purpose. It asks and answers three very simple questions: In what sense is a believer to be conformed to the image of Christ? Why should we be transformed into the image of the heavenly man? And, is it possible to be so conformed? Having set out what it means to be like Christ in his character, suffering, and glory, and giving us reasons to desire and pursue such conformity, the last section is a beautiful portion in which Spurgeon puts some earnest, even desperate concerns in the mouths of various inquirers, in each case giving warm and comforting answers. To be sure, there are warnings in his conclusions, but the sermon holds out a glorious, and gloriously-assured prospect to all who are in Christ now, in whom the Spirit is working and will work likeness to our Saviour.

When we think of the things that distinguish our character or personality, we often think in terms of what we do. We bake or teach or build. We are honest or dishonest, we are dependable or responsible, loyal or disloyal. As Christians we are not immune to the pull of the culture that gives value to individuals based on these types of things. In Christ, however, our identity comes from a different source. Because of Christ, we have different priorities, different perspectives, and a different purpose. We no longer need be defined by what we do, what we own, what we achieve or how we live. We can instead embrace a new Identity as God's children, loved with a steadfast, eternal and unfailing love. This frees us to receive value apart from what we do, own, achieve and how we live. Living from this freedom changes everything. It is a narrow and less traveled road that really does make all the difference! To prepare for this week's message spend time reflecting on what the Bible tells us about our Identity in Christ found in these verses: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21, Ephesians 1:3-6, Ephesians 2:19-21, Romans 8:17, 1 Peter 2:9, John 1:11-13

Paul confessed, 'The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.' (Galatians 2:20). Paul knew that Christ Jesus not only loved Paul personally, but that he had given himself on the cross to save Paul individually. Developing and extending this biblical idea, we come to understand that the Lord Jesus did not die for a 'category' of persons who, of their own free will, would appropriate salvation for themselves. No. The Lord Jesus died for real people on a personal, definite basis. He died for those whom the Father had given him (John 6:38–40). This week's two selections help us better to understand, and rejoice in, this definite atonement made for all those the Lord has appointed to salvation. "Religion" points to outward symbols and rituals as primary but an authentic spiritual life knows outward symbols mean nothing unless they match an inward devotion to Christ Sermon by Dr. Robert Lewis 5/10/1998 Rom 2:17-29
A sermon by Rev. Barbara Lemmel and Rev. Mitchell Hay. Hebrew Scripture Joshua 3:1-4a; 3:14-4:7 NRSV Early in the morning Joshua rose and set out from Shittim with all the Israelites, and they came to the Jordan. They camped there before crossing over. At the end of three days, the officers went through the camp and commanded the people, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place. Follow it, so that you may know the way you should go, for you have not passed this way before.” When the people set out from their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of the covenant were in front of the people. Now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. So when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the edge of the water, the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho. While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan. When the entire nation had finished crossing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Select twelve people, one from each tribe of Israel, and command them, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet stood, carry them over with you, and lay them down in the place where you camp tonight.'” Then Joshua summoned the twelve whom he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe. Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on their shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, so that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?' then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the Israelites a memorial forever.”

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ Sermon on Easter in 2023. An Easter Special Presentation in 5 Parts: • Episode 14 – An Easter Prayer • Episode 15 – The Last Supper • Episode 16 – The Crucifixion • Episode 17 – The Resurrection • Episode 18 – Doubting Thomas I want to draw a clear line this morning — not so much between the Christian and the non-Christian, but rather between the Christian who is standing firm in his faith, who is walking with God, who is confident of his salvation — who knows God is pleased with him and he is on his way to heaven. On the other hand, there is everyone else. Paul issues that warning right at the beginning of our passage — “unless you have believed in vain.” Look, as James says, even the devils believe in God. “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” (James 2:19) I want to give you a chance this morning to cross that divide and make your faith sure. There is one place to do that more surely than anywhere else, and it is the place we are gathering this morning. You might expect me to say we will come to the cross — and we will, of course, speak about the cross — but, in fact, we are coming to the empty tomb. For it is at the empty tomb that we meet Jesus — He is not dead, He is risen! The good news is the story of Jesus and how the events of his life 2000 years ago still have a major impact on us today. What does Paul say is the most important thing? What is the “good news” or “gospel” according to Paul? There are three aspects: • Christ died • He was buried • He was raised from death. • Self-Publish Your Own Novels at Draft2Digital - https://www.draft2digital.com/sidneys... • Get More Subscriptions from YouTube – with TubeBuddy - https://www.tubebuddy.com/sidneystjam... • Convert Audio Podcast to Video Podcast for YouTube - https://repurpose.io/?aff=48660 • Mystery & Suspense Romance, “Belem Towers” by Sidney St. James o https://books2read.com/u/mdGL8w • Detective Murder Mystery – “Ace of Spades, Part I” featuring Vincent Gideon by Sidney St. James o https://books2read.com/u/mBOr8N • Christian Novel, True Story from Memoirs.
