'Systeemdenken' staat in deze aflevering centraal, een manier om de ruimtelijke ordening te bezien in relaties, in samenhangen, niet in losstaande onderdelen. Dat klinkt abstract en dat is het voor een deel ook, maar de hypothese in deze aflevering is dat het evengoed een waardevolle lens is. Een manier om helder na te denken te midden van ronkende retoriek. Of zoals Donella Meadows het formuleerde: 'Purposes are deduced from behavior, not from rhetoric or stated goals'. Twee systeemdenkers in de ruimtelijke ordening en ontwerp zijn te gast bij Peter en Lilian: Eric Frijters en Fransje HooimeijerEric Frijters is partner en oprichter van het ontwerpbureau FABRICations.  Een bureau dat over zichzelf zegt: 'we approach every challenge through the lens of systems thinking'. Eric doceert ook al twee decennia aan de Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. In die hoedanigheid publiceerde hij samen met anderen ook het boek The City as a System. Fransje Hooimeijer is hoogleraar Delta Urbanisme aan de Faculteit Bouwkunde aan de TU Delft. Haar expertise is de integratie van systeemdenken met ruimtelijk ontwerp, met name met betrekking tot water en bodem, zoals in het SPADES-project.Het citaat van Donella Meadows komt uit haar boek Thinking in Systems, dat een uitstekende introductie tot systeemdenken is. A “trick” is formed by every player in turn playing one card from their hand to the center. Then the “trick” is won by one of the players and set aside. (Usually won by the highest value played in the led suit.) Most trick taking games require players to “follow suit” and match the suit of the first played card, if they can. Many trick taking games have a “trump” suit that is considered higher than all others. There are all kinds of variations with partnering, bidding, and how tricks are won. Room to Grow Our goal with Room to Grow is to bring your kids – or your family – through a series of games that grow in complexity. Normally, we take a beginner game, an intermediate game, and an advanced game (and some honorable mentions). They offer a plan for growth for players to get comfortable with that mechanic, and all are family-friendly. Beginner: Hearts Played with a standard 52-card deck. A “must-follow” game. No trump suit. No bidding (you don’t have to guess how many tricks you’ll win). Heart cards and the Queen of Spades are bad, you don’t want to win them. But you can attempt to shoot the moon; if you can get all 13 cards AND the Queen of Spades, you take 0 (bad) points and all your opponents take 26 points. We like Hearts because the rules are simple, the math is pretty easy, and it’s still enough to learn why you want to lose tricks sometimes and win tricks other times. Bicycle cards has full instructions on how to play Hearts. Intermediate: Add a little more with Wizard or Rebel Princess Rebel Princess is very much like Hearts, but with a fun theme (princesses avoiding princes and frogs) and with some special powers. Read Nick’s review of Rebel Princess, and the expansion Happily Never After. In the other direction, Wizard is a basic trick taking game with bidding. The first round is only one trick, the second round is two tricks, etc. After being dealt your card(s), you decide how many tricks you think you can win in the round. The closer you can get to your bid, the more points you get, and the round acts like a multiplier when you get your bid correct. Learn more about Wizard on Wikipedia. Advanced Twists with Two Players or Cooperative Trick-Taking Jekyll vs Hyde is one of our favorite games, a trick taking game for just two players, with a much smaller deck and potion cards that can activate chaotic powers. One player wants to balance tricks won vs lost, the other player wants to maximize the difference. Read or watch our review of Jekyll vs. Hyde. An entirely different twist on the genre is cooperative trick taking games. And the best one to start with is The Crew: Quest for Planet Nine. It provides a series of missions, each with different goals and restrictions. Your communication is limited to a one-time-use token/card each round. Our card this week is Terrance "Konomi" Plummer, the Ace of Spades from North Carolina.  It was Memorial Day weekend in 2010, and hot as hades in North Carolina, when 22-year-old Terrance “Konomi” Plummer Junior was found murdered in a crime so brutal—and so deliberate—that it stayed with everyone who touched the case—especially Lt. Jeff Locklear. What began as another homicide investigation became the one case he could never shake—his White Whale. More than a decade later, the answer would come from something investigators had possessed all along. Our card this week is Anita Carlson, the 10 of Spades from Minnesota.  In late June 1987, the town of Bemidji, Minnesota, was gearing up for Independence Day weekend. Celebrations quickly turned to panic when Anita Carlson, a college graduate with hopes of working in TV production, went missing from her nighttime job at Pete's Place, a convenience store at the intersection of Highways 2 and 89.  By the end of the weekend, Anita had been found dead. Our card this week is Kevin Nguyen, the 10 of Spades from Indiana. On a cold December night in 2018, 25-year-old Kevin Nguyen went to see a band at a Fort Wayne bar and never came home. Surveillance cameras captured his final known hours in eerie fragments before he vanished. What happened next has fueled years of rumors, online theories, and bitter disagreements between investigators and Kevin's family. With unreleased video evidence, mysterious tips about a possible killing, and no trace of Kevin ever found, his disappearance remains one of Indiana's most haunting unsolved mysteries. Our card this week is Tonya Teske, the 2 of Spades from Idaho. This week, we're resurfacing an important old episode for you because we just learned more information about a person of interest who's never been ruled out. His name is Mark Douglas Burns, and he's a terrifying individual. He came up in a Crime Junkie episode we dropped in the fan club in which Burns confessed to murdering a young mom in her home back in 2001. From the outside, Greenacres seemed like a picture-perfect place to grow up — where kids roamed barefoot between the park, school, and corner store. But beneath that storybook setting, something darker was unfolding, and it came to a head one May evening in 1984 when Christy disappeared. More than 40 years later, her friends are revisiting their childhood memories, uncovering how abuse and violence can exist in plain sight — often hidden or left unspoken. By sharing Christy's story during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we hope to raise awareness, support survivors, and remind others that their voices matter. Robert is candid about his own pathway, he started with astrology, then encountered an old book, Sacred Symbols of the Ancients (1940s), that connected playing cards with symbolic meaning. That discovery, and the accuracy he felt it had for him, pushed him into decades of study and teaching.He frames the “regular” 52 card deck as more than a game tool, a structure with mathematical features that appear to mirror calendar cycles. From there, he introduces the core idea many listeners will want to test immediately: your month and day of birth maps to a specific card, and there are multiple birthdays that can share the same card. He is careful, though. Same card does not mean same life, or the same outcomes. He describes each card as having a range, a higher and lower expression, plus many variations in between.The deck, the symbols, and what gets lost over timeA strong thread early in our exchange is simple curiosity about origins. Where did this standard deck come from, and why did it settle into this configuration of suits, courts, and numbers. Robert's view is that much of the original symbolic meaning has been lost, even to modern manufacturers. He offers one concrete example most people recognise visually: the Ace of Spades often being larger and more ornate than the other aces. Manufacturers may say “that's just how it's always done,” while Robert argues there is a symbolic reason inside the tradition.We also touch on the fact that not all cultures use the same deck format. Instead of trying to play carnival fortune teller, he aims to help people understand inner patterns, issues under the surface, and the kinds of tensions that can be worked with, so life becomes less reactive and more intentional.The spreads and planetary influences, a glimpse of the internal logicRobert shares an image of what he calls the life spread and spiritual spread, with cards laid out in perfect order, and with rows and columns associated with planets. His claim is that particular placements within that grid correspond to strong planetary themes, and he gives an example of a card associated with Uranus and Aquarian influence.Even if you remain skeptical, the noteworthy part is that Robert is not presenting this as vague intuition. He is presenting it as a structured interpretive system, with internal rules, correspondences, and repeatable placements. That is a very different thing from random guessing dressed up as mysticism.AI, a helper that sometimes lies with confidenceThe AI segment is one of the most practically useful parts of the episode, because it strips away hype.Robert says there are already AI based astrology reading sites, and he expects it is only a matter of time until someone applies the same approach to his card system. His intention is to build that himself, training an AI to deliver readings in his style, so people can interact conversationally and ask questions about near term concerns.He is not naive about current limitations. He questions whether AI “thinks” in a meaningful way, because he has seen it fail at straightforward tasks and persist in wrong answers. He also offers the counterpoint from software work, where AI can be a serious productivity multiplier. And even when new detectives did start digging, no one has been able to piece together exactly what happened to Daphne. Over the years, theories about her disappearance have varied wildly – from sex work and drug deals to a serial killer. There was even speculation that Daphne wasn't missing at all, that she was hiding in protective custody.
