Founder and CEO of Essentia Analytics, Clare Flynn Levy, joins Mike Wallberg, CFA, to discuss the concept of the behavioral alpha score, a metric designed to assess an investor's decision-making skill. Drawing from her experience as an active equity fund manager, Clare explains the origins of the behavioral alpha score and its significance in the pursuit of sustainable investment alpha in an increasingly competitive landscape. She emphasizes that traditional methods of generating alpha, such as superior information, are no longer effective, highlighting the importance of understanding and improving one's own decision-making processes. Tune in to explore how behavioral analytics can enhance investment strategies and decision making.
Tune in to hear:What does Clare and her team at Essentia Analytics focus on specifically? How can one score the decision making skill involved in stock picking when so much is relative to timing? How does Essentia Analytics score all 7 data points they lay out on their website? One of the trick things about behavioral investing is you can get a good result for a bad reason and vice versa. How does Clare's team think about this and try to account for it?Recent research Clare and her team did shows that decision making hygiene is 1.5x more predictive of beating a benchmark in a subsequent year. Can she tell us more about this study and its implications? Why does the above correlation/relationship lose predictive power after 3 years on average?Could greater awareness, using tools like this, make fund managers more aware of issues like style drift? How can we make a compelling case that gets people to focus more on process and less on outcomes?LinksClare Flynn Levy on LinkedInBehavioral AlphaEssentia AnalyticsConnect with UsMeet Dr. Daniel CrosbyCheck Out All of Orion's PodcastsPower Your Growth with OrionCompliance Code: 1385-OAS-5/31/2024
My guest on the show today is Clare Flynn Levy, the Founder and CEO of Essentia Analytics. I met Clare several years ago when my prior firm worked with Essentia to help us improve our decision making. The process of having Essentia analyze past successes and mistakes was so insightful that I became a big fan of the product. Accordingly, when I reconnected with Clare recently, I was excited to speak with her about: The founding inspiration for Essentia; The concepts of Behavioral Alpha and of providing a helpful benchmark to managers; Working with both managers and allocators to help improve decision making; How Essentia can use all its data to make the software even better over time; and Ways in which managers can use Essentia's data to help market their firms. Traditional performance attribution helps explain past fund performance but is not predictive of future success. In the same way that Moneyball has swept every professional sport, data science is bringing greater transparency into portfolio managers' decision-making skill. Decision attribution, which analyses the buy and sell decisions of individual portfolio managers, helps identify patterns of demonstrated skill - and specific areas for improvement. For portfolio construction practitioners seeking to select managers capable of outperforming, behavioural analysis of fund managers is crucial. - Essentia Analytics' Clare Flynn Levy and Langdon Equity Partners' Greg Dean. It stands to reason that an investor who makes profitable (relative or absolute) decisions more than 50% of the time, and whose profitable decisions typically add more value than their unprofitable ones destroy, will outperform an investor who does not. Decision attribution analysis provides a crucial lens on equity manager skill, benefiting asset owners and fund buyers as they select and monitor managers. In addition, fund managers increasingly use such analysis to identify and overcome their own behavioural biases, producing better outcomes for investors. - Watch Essentia Analytics' Clare Flynn Levy and earn 0.50 CE/CPD hrs on Portfolio Construction Forum

Our exploration of the use of modern data analytics to enhance investment results continues this week with two of the leading providers of tools for portfolio managers. My guests on today’s show are Clare Flynn Levy and Cameron Hight, both former investment managers who became entrepreneurs seeking to improve outcomes for other managers. Clare is the founder and CEO of Essentia Analytics, a behavioral data analytics service that enables fund managers to capture rich data about their own behavior and its context. Essentia analyzes trading history to help managers overcome common behavioral biases and optimize their trade entry and exit on positions. Cameron is the Founder and CEO of Alpha Theory, a fintech company that helps investment managers optimize their position sizing process. By creating a disciplined, real-time process based on a decision algorithm with roots in actuarial science, physics, and poker, Alpha Theory takes the guessing out of position sizing and allows managers to focus on what they do best - picking stocks. Our conversations cover the founding of their respective businesses, the mistakes portfolio managers commonly make, the tools they employ to help managers improve, and the challenges they face in broader adoption of these modern tools. The good news is the clients of Essentia and Alpha Theory have demonstrated improvement in their results after employing these techniques. If you ask Clare and Cameron, you may come a whole new appreciation about the potential for active management going forward.
