Send us a textWild bets, hot streaks, and a little market seduction. The acid capitalist is back, sunburnt and shirtless, broadcasting straight from St. Barts with sand in his toes and a dollar short in his hand. This is Confessions Part II, the origin story sharpened, scuffed, and refitted for today's volatility junkies. If finance had a Tarantino cut, this is it.We rewind to the end of 2002. The Nasdaq's wreckage still smoldering. The S&P up 9 percent. Me? Flat for the month, down 4.9 percent since launch. A hedge fund rookie trading like he's strapped to a rocket and reading tea leaves in reverse. There were no parades. No consensus. Just my gut, and it was twitching.I placed my first real bet, short the dollar. The Dixie was at 110. Five years later, it would bleed to 70. Back then, they laughed. Now they squint at the same charts, claiming they saw it coming. They didn't. But I did. Commodities stopped dying. Gold stopped bleeding. Something turned. And I felt it.This episode isn't about P/E ratios. It's about instinct. Rage. Faith. Hunger. It's about building Eclectica not as a fund but as a fever dream. I didn't chase storms. I waited for them. I didn't knock. I picked the lock. That investor? That was me.We talk Amsterdam Commodities, no website, no pitch deck, no interest in seduction. It smelled of hash and history. It was cheap, opaque, and irresistible. And it hit. Like a ten-bagger. Like something better than sex. No, seriously, would you rather have a one-night stand or a tenfold return on your weirdest position?Oh, and then there's Brazil. The one that ghosted me. The stock I dumped, live, while staring through the glass of their too-polished HQ. They didn't show me respect. So I showed them the door. This is the cockpit view of macro. Of madness. Of the market as mythology. No suits. No soft landings. Just you, me, and a twitch in the eye of the storm. He shares with Rob how he helps manage other people’s money, his investment strategies and the beliefs and principles he invests and lives by. They also talk about who they think controls the world, the power banks and investment firms hold, and their thoughts on taxation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rob has a set of investment beliefs and principles that he uses to guide him, particularly with more difficult decisions. It can be easier to work with other peoples money than your own as it isn’t just you working on decisions, but a team, and it also keeps you clear-headed and professional. You have to maintain discipline to be able to invest calmly and safely. It’s also important to recognise that you won’t get every decision right. Rob wants to be financially free by the time he is 55, to meet this target he tries to double his money every year. When investing, it’s important to diversify across equity, bonds and properties. Investing should always be for the long term. For example, when investing in businesses, think about their longevity. Rob believes that we can still live in a capitalist society and reduce on reliance on fossil fuels. The idea of overnight success isn't real, yet people are becoming obsessed with quick results. As a society, we need to think about how we change this mindset to continue to create the entrepreneurs of the future. BEST MOMENTS “Personally I’ve always had a set of investment beliefs.” “Investment is risk, but risk is to shake people off” “I want the freedom to say I don’t want to work” “Ask yourself, if this business didn’t exist, would the world miss it?” “The world and economic growth needs cheap energy and that energy can come from other places” “People don’t realise that a pound note is an IOU” "How do we have radical reform? What is a way to fire up the UK economy again?" A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback.  And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. Episode Description:In this profound and enlightening conversation, James revisits the remarkable life of Dr. Gladys McGarey, who, at 103 years old, shares her 'six secrets to health and happiness at every age' from her book 'The Well Lived Life'. Reflecting on a life rich with experiences, from caring for patients across the globe to handling personal loss and surviving a recent tricycle accident, Dr. McGarey embodies resilience and wisdom. She discusses the importance of facing challenges, the transformative power of love and life, and how her encounters with notable figures like Milton Erickson shaped her understanding of human potential. Dr. McGarey's perspectives on aging, happiness, and living a meaningful life offer invaluable insights, emphasizing the significance of community, love, and choosing one's path with intention.Episode Summary:00:00 Celebrating a Century of Wisdom with Gladys McGarey02:04 The Resilience of a 103-Year-Old: Tricycle Accidents and Recovery05:11 Finding Humanity and Overcoming Loss06:04 The Power of Love and Life: A Personal Journey14:44 Exploring the Mind's Influence on Reality16:31 The Magic of Connection: A Story of a Plant and Dementia25:39 Embracing Life's Adventures and the Quest for True Humanity31:29 The Philosophy of Life, Love, and Humanity36:07 Navigating Life's Challenges with Optimism37:47 The Power of Choice in Overcoming Adversity40:39 Turning Pain into Purpose: A Personal Journey41:47 Action as a Catalyst for Change42:23 The Interplay of Life and Love44:13 Embracing Aging with Grace and Wisdom46:33 The Impact of Stress on Health and Well-being47:47 Finding Meaning and Joy Amidst Loss50:42 The Importance of Memory and Presence56:42 Exploring Spiritual Growth and Self-Discovery01:02:05 The Role of Technology and Community in Modern Life01:06:32 Reflecting on a Life Well Lived ------------What do YOU think of the show? A Note from James:Cal Newport has written such great books about how to be more productive, more creative, the titles of the books speak for themselves: 'So Good They Can't Ignore You', 'Deep Work', and this latest one is called 'Slow Productivity'. It's about how you ultimately succeed in getting more productive by going slower and sometimes doing nothing. Cal tells us how and why and we always have an interesting conversation. So here is Cal Newport!Episode Description:This episode explores the nuanced concept of 'Slow Productivity,' as championed by Cal Newport, across an engaging dialogue that sheds light on achieving more by intentionally slowing down. Newport, making his fifth appearance on the podcast, underscores the counterintuitive productivity philosophy through his journey, inspirations from his books like 'Digital Minimalism,' and the pivotal role of mindful work habits. Referencing historical and contemporary figures like Benjamin Franklin and John Grisham, Newport articulates the significance of deliberate practice, the fallacy of equating busyness with productivity, and the benefits of focused work. Additionally, the interview captures a personal milestone of applying for full professorship, emphasizing the importance of scholarly impact and steady progress. College Royal Rumble 2024! | James Debates Jim Keyes

The James Altucher Show

A Note from James:For 20 years, I've been writing about how much I think people should not go to college, and that college is not the only solution for a career. It could be the worst solution because  tuition has risen faster than inflation every single year for the past 50 years. And why is that? Because student loans are a big scam and the government backs them, college presidents always know they're getting their money. They keep raising tuition even faster than society is raising the prices of anything else. James Keyes, former CEO of multibillion-dollar company 7-Eleven, has been CEO of many companies, including Blockbuster, and he wrote a book about the importance of education: Education is Freedom: The Future Is in Your Hands. So guess what? We decided to debate. And I'll admit I'm the sort of person who tends to agree with whoever the last person I speak to is, but he presented some very good arguments and I have to, I have to give them all credit for that. But I'll let you hear the conversation and it's well worth listening to, particularly if you've been wondering about this issue. So, here he is.  Let's talk about college.Episode Description:James and corporate leader Jim Keyes debate the relevance of a college education for career success, attributing rising tuition costs and impractical skill sets to modern colleges' downsides. The importance of degrees as a differentiator in the job market is emphasized, with the debate also covering emerging alternatives such as Google certificates. The two later shift to discuss learning and education in the context of business evolution, specifically detailing challenges faced by 7-Eleven in maintaining "freshness" and the role of technology in overcoming these. Episode Summary:00:00 The Value of College Education: A Conversation with James Keyes01:45 The Business of Convenience: The 7-Eleven Story04:52 The Evolution of Blockbuster and the Future of Streaming07:03 The Impact of Technology on Global Education08:42 The Importance of Learning and the Role of College08:50 The Debate: Is College Worth It?09:46 The Role of College in Career Advancement13:52 The Future of Education and the Global Economy21:47 The Power of Self-Investment and the Value of a Degree24:07 The Practical Reality of College Education29:16 The Entrepreneurial Path vs. College Education36:22 The Impact of Self-Doubt and the Confidence from Education37:51 The Role of Society in Learning38:18 The Importance of Discipline in Self-Learning38:45 The Social Aspect of Education39:02 The Value of Collaboration in Learning39:32 The Impact of Real-World Experience on Learning40:12 The Comparison Between Formal Education and Self-Learning41:31 The Role of Professors in Learning42:05 The Power of Self-Learning42:52 The Debate on College Degree vs Google Certificate46:11 The Importance of Broad Education49:14 The Future of Education01:02:25 The Impact of Fear on Learning01:08:23 The Future of Economy01:15:31 The Importance of Freshness in Business01:17:15 The Power of Knowledge ------------What do YOU think of the show? When you see an attention grabbing headline or news story there are two important questions to ask: Is what you're seeing true? And what is the bias of the writer? Today, Paul and Ira address these two questions when a listener sends in an article about how passive investing is breaking the stock market. It turns out that the article was written by a hedge fund manager. Listen along as the advisors address whether the claim is true and why the identity of the writer is relevant. Later in the episode, the advisors talk about their own personal experiences with owning real estate and how most people who walk into investing in real estate don't have a clear picture of the work or the financial return.   Concerned about the market in an election year? Ray Dalio (Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order) is a global macro-investor and author. Ray joins the Armchair Expert to discuss how the world's economy is driven by debt, how investors can study history to try to predict financial outcomes, and how new world orders can shape the rules for the rest of humanity. Ray and Dax talk about what equal opportunity actually looks like, how education is affecting the future of the economy, and how compromise is the key to creating a system that works for everyone. Ray explains the different types of wars, how ideologies now rule in the public space, and how meditation has helped him with painful experiences in his life.
