Renault R15 und R17 – schnittige Formen, alte Technik Optisch waren sie unverkennbar Brüder, von vielen Genen her ebenso – aber Zwillinge sind sie nicht, denn im Detail unterscheiden sich R15 und R17 von Renault durchaus. Basis für beide war zunächst mal der R12. Der zeichnete sich durch wenig moderne Technik aus: Einzelradaufhängung und Scheibenbremsen vorne, aber Starrachse und Trommelbremse hinten. Weil die Konkurrenz mit Ford Capri und Opel Manta Erfolge feierte, wollte auch Renault ein Kombi-Coupé auf den Markt bringen. Aus Kostengründen griff man dafür ins Großserienregal. Bekannte Basis, neue, schöne Karosse drauf – und fertig waren R15 und R17 für die Markteinführung 1971. Der R15 bekam sogar noch den inzwischen deutlich veralteten Motor aus dem Renault Dauphine verpasst. Dem R17 erging es hier besser: Für ihn hielt man bereits das deutlich modernere Aggregat aus dem R16 bereit. Die Renaults gab es beide auch in flott, mit mehr als 100 PS. Ihr Problem damals war allerdings der Preis: Rund 3000 Mark lagen die Autos über den Angeboten der Konkurrenz, was sich dann auch in einer eher geringen Stückzahl von nur knapp 300.000 Fahrzeugen niederschlug – für beide Baureihen zusammen wohlgemerkt. Heute ist das Problem dagegen eindeutig der Rost. Die braune Pest hat die schnittigen Coupés fast vollständig dahingerafft – wurden sie in den frühen 80ern noch im Straßenverkehr wahrgenommen, gehören sie selbst auf den großen Verkaufsplattformen heute zu den totalen Exoten. Frederic und Ron finden die Renaults schön. Frederic will keinen haben, Ron schon. Aber dann natürlich einen R17 mit der stärksten Motorisierung und Faltdach. Der Alfa Romeo GTV – Sportcoupé mit Tücken Der GTV basiert auf dem Fahrgestell der Alfetta, einer 1972 vorgestellten Alfa-Limousine der oberen Mittelklasse. Für das Coupé wurde das Fahrwerk um 11 Zentimeter gekürzt, schließlich sollte der GTV etwas kompakter als die Limo daherkommen. Ab 1974 bis 1986 konnte man den keilförmigen Flitzer kaufen. Gezeichnet vom Design-Meister Giorgio Giugiaro waren es die Ingenieure von Alfa, die Giugiaro immer wieder in die Parade fuhren. Egal ob es der Scheibenwischer war, der versteckt zwischen Motorhaube und Windschutzscheibe sitzen sollte oder in diesem Zuge auch der Neigungswinkel der Frontscheibe – immer wieder wurde die italienische Designer-Legende mit der Realität konfrontiert. „Zu teuer“, „technisch nicht umsetzbar“, „zu gefährlich“ waren die ständigen Ansagen des Hauses Alfa Romeo. So sind die Form und die Details des GTV zwar auch heute noch schön anzusehen, unterscheiden sich aber sehr von dem, was Meisterzeichner Giugiaro im Kopf hatte. Überlebt haben von dem mitunter recht potent motorisierten Sportcoupé nicht viele - der Rost hat die meisten der rund 140.000 produzierten Fahrzeuge verschwinden lassen. So ist der Alfa GTV auch heute noch für Schrauber und Liebhaber eine stetige Herausforderung, ein permanenter Kampf gegen Korrosion anfällige Technik. Trotzdem, so heißt es, entschädigt das sportliche Fahren den geneigten Alfista ausreichend für die vielen Stunden in der Garage. Ron und Frederic finden das Auto von der Form her toll, der Alfa schafft es aber nicht auf die Top-Ten-Liste der beiden. Ein großer Nachteil ist, dass eine richtige Power-Version fehlt, denn das Getriebe des GTV ist unterdimensioniert. Frederic ist das Coupé zudem zu anfällig und Ron fehlt der gewisse „Proll-Faktor“. Mercedes W210 – Das Vieraugenprinzip Das am auffälligsten Neue an der E-Klasse W210 ist die Frontpartie. Jahrzehntelang waren die Scheinwerfer bei Mercedes rechteckig, zuerst aufrecht, dann waagerecht. Und nun, beim 1995 vorgestellten W210 blicken vier elliptische Ringe, die wie Augen wirkten, in die Welt. Zusammen mit den insgesamt abgerundeten Formen ist der W210 ein kompletter Bruch mit dem Stil seiner Vorgänger, vor allem mit der Baureihe W124, die rechteckige Riesenscheinwerfer als stilistisches Markenzeichen des Autoherstellers mit dem Stern kultiviert hatte. Ein Nebeneffekt des neuen Stylings ist der sensationelle Cw-Wert von nur 0,27. Technisch blieb vieles bei altbekannten Prinzipien, wenn auch im Detail häufig entscheidend weiterentwickelt. So blieb die vom Vorgänger bereits bekannte Raumlenkerhinterachse und andere Teile des Fahrwerks erhalten, neu war die Lenkung. Hier wurde die Kugelumlauflenkung durch eine Zahnstangenlenkung ersetzt. In Punkto Sicherheit legte der 210er mit einer verbesserten Knautschzone, Seitenaufprallschutz und Seitenairbags nochmal deutlich nach und auch was Komfort und technische Spielereien angeht war, die neue E-Klasse innovativ. So gab es ab nun einen Regensensor, einen Luftgütesensor, eine Klimaautomatik und eine Ultraschall-Einparkhilfe. Weitere Neuerungen betrafen andere Elektronik- und Sensorikbauteile, wie ein neues Traktionssystem ETS. Auch einen permanenter Allradantrieb namens 4matic konnte geordert werden. Bemerkenswert ist die breite Motorenpalette die vom Vierzylinder-Diesel bis hin zum potenten V8 eine gefühlt unbegrenzte Anzahl von Auswahlmöglichkeiten bot. Wem das nicht genug war, der konnte sich bekannten Tunern zuwenden, wie AMG, Lorinser und Brabus. Beim Letzteren gab es sogar eine Zwölfzylinder-Version. Ron findet das T-Modell gut, weil es unschlagbare 2000 Liter Ladevolumen hat. Frederic ist da eher bei einer der potenteren Limousinen, am liebsten mit V8. The Power of Writing in Design Rocheleau has become known not just for his architectural practice, but for his written reflections on the field. These writings—available via Rust Architects—provide critical insight often missing from mainstream discussions of architecture. What drives this urge to document and reflect? Rocheleau sees it as an essential part of the creative process. “As I've gone through that process [of creating], I've begun to feel the intuition or this need to reflect,” he explained. “To say, okay, what am I actually doing? Where is this coming from? What is the work I'm putting into the world?” Such purposeful cogitation creates the framework for managing creative ideas for a greater purpose. This emphasis on writing as a reflective tool, rather than simply a vehicle for promotion or analysis, places Rocheleau in a tradition of architectural thinkers who seek deeper meaning in their work. He draws inspiration from historical figures such as John Ruskin, seeing the built environment as both a product and reflection of civilization. Bridging School and Reality A particularly compelling moment in the interview, for me, came when Mitch and I discuss a comment from architect Brian Pinkett: that architecture school doesn't teach students how to design, but rather how to think critically. Rocheleau agreed, but pointed out a troubling disconnect between that training and the professional world. “It seems to me that there may be in the path of architecture… a primary path, and then along the way, a series of possibly distractions,” he said. These distractions include software, rendering techniques, and other technical tools that—while valuable—can steer young architects away from their original, human-centered purpose. Rocheleau's concern is that without conscious reflection, the architectural process becomes reactive, not intentional. S&P Futures are trading slightly higher this morning after Wednesday's sell-off, which was triggered by a spike in Treasury yields amid concerns about a significant expansion in U.S. fiscal debt. The House is expected to pass Trump's tax and spending bill this morning; the vote is currently underway. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s “Make America Health Again” report is expected to be released today. Health insurer stocks are under pressure this morning following the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' announcement of expanded audits of Medicare Advantage plans. AT&T has agreed to acquire substantially all of Lumen Technologies' mass markets fiber business for $5.75 billion in cash.  Reports on Jobless Claims and the flash PMI report for May will be released today. On the earning front SNOW, URBN, ZM & AAP are higher after their releases. After the bell today earnings reports from INTU, WDAY, ADSK, CPRT, ROST and DECK are set to report.

Tariffs, interest rates and consumer sentiment all weigh on the retail sector, seen in earnings from big box stores like Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT). Văzut de sus, acum 300 000 de ani, pământul arăta ca o țesătură uriașă de păduri, munți și ape locuite de tot felul de animale și de o specie nou apărută, Homo sapiens, care s-a impus în fața celorlalte specii de hominizi, dar a rămas integrat în acest peisaj. Trăia din vânat și era organizat în triburi. Văzut de sus, el nu se distingea cu nimic de celelalte animale. Era nomad și se muta dintr-un loc în altul, ca orice animal, în căutare de hrană bună de vânat. Dar acum 10 000 de ani s-a întâmplat ceva care a schimbat acest tablou. Omul s-a transformat din nomad în sedentar. În loc să se mai mute dintr-un loc în altul după hrană, a rămas pe loc și a adus hrana la el.Cum a făcut? A descoperit AGRICULTURA. Era mai ușor și mai inteligent să cultivi câteva semințe în pământ și să te hrănești cu rodul lor decât să alergi toată ziua prin pădure ca să vânezi animale. Dacă aveai noroc, prindeai câteva și te hrăneai, dar era la fel de posibil să te prindă și să te mănânce ele pe tine. Era mai comod și mai puțin riscant să scoți hrana din pământ, nu din pădure.Cât a fost vânător nomad, omul făcea parte din mediul natural în care trăia, era integrat în el. Când a devenit agricultor sedentar, raportul lui cu natura s-a inversat. Acum omul integra natura în lumea lui. Ca agricultor, omul nu mai era înghițit de natură, a început să o înghită el pe ea. Din acest motiv, acum 10 000 de ani, pământul văzut de sus a început să își schimbe înfățișarea. Pe întinderile uriașe de păduri, ape și munți, au apărut niște pete noi: câmpurile cultivate de om. Asta vedem și astăzi dacă ne uităm de sus: câmpuri cultivate de om. Dar nu le mai lucrăm cu sapa, ci cu tehnologii venite din viitor.Am invitat astăzi la « Noi venim din viitor » pe o doamnă a agriculturii românești. Alina Crețu a studiat la Iași, la Lille, în nordul Franței, și în Marea Britanie. Este actualmente directoare a FAPPR, adică Forumul Agricultorilor și Producătorilor Profesioniști din România, înființată în 2012. Este o asociație de fermieri care lucrează suprafețe cuprinse între 50 și 50 000 de hectare. The latter part of this chapter has Nicholas Rostov continuing his parley with Boris and Berg. I broke it into two episodes because the latter section deals with the first interaction between Andrei and Nichols, who surprisingly are not familiar with one another. After Rostov alludes to his award, Boris retrieves the money and letter from Rostov's family. Upon reading a few lines, Rostov hid his face, ashamed he frightened his family over his trivial injury.  Berg then makes the mistake of commenting on Rostov's bounty; as Rostov was given an excuse to turn his frustration at Berg. Berg is asked to temporarily leave and Rostov is free to lament.  Also in the correspondence was a letter of recommendation for a position with General Bagration. However, Rostov throws it away. He  does not want to be anyone's adjutant, which he views as a servant's job.  Boris picks it up and confesses how much he would prefer such a position.     When the wine arrived, Berg was invited back. Over the bottle, the conversation became animated with the friends relaying their adventures, one from the vantage point of  a hussar and  the others from service close to the Imperial family.  Attention soon focuses on how Rostov was hurt. Without any intention of dishonesty, he gave an exaggerated account and conformed his story to expectations of what a cavalry attack would be.  Notably, Rostov couldn't have told the Truth: that he fell off his horse and ran into the woods. Tolstoy is implying that young men who face battle are prone to spin such tales. Rostov goes on to describe the battle at Schöngrabern as a collective memory, incorporating the bravery of those around him.  Rostov fervently relayed how he was aflame with excitement, flying like a hurricane at the French and cutting them down with his saber. He was carried away with lies.  Just as he was saying: “You cannot imagine the frenzy,” Prince Andrei, entered the room, looking for Boris, as he had received a letter from Pierre requesting he help the young lad advance in his career. Andrei took notice of the young braggart.  Already disillusioned by war, Andrei could not stand such boasting. He composed himself and gave Boris a pleasant greeting but frowned at Rostov, who noticed the affront. Boris then inquired of the battle plans. “We shall probably advance,” was Andrei's reply.  Andrei turned to Rostóv and asked him if he was at Schöngrabern.  When Rostov replied he was, Andrei calmly noted: “Yes, there are many stories now told about that affair.” Rostov took the bait, saying “Yes, stories!, But ours are those of  men who have been under fire! Our have some weight, not like the stories of those on the staff who get rewards for doing nothing” “Of whom you imagine me to be one?” retorted Andrei, with an amiable smile. Rostov was irate but recognized his adversary's self-possession. He mustered, “I don't know you and, frankly, I don't want to. I am speaking of the staff in general.”  Andrei calmly continues  “I see you wish to insult me, and it would be very easy to do so if you lack sufficient self-respect, but admit that the time and place are badly chosen as in a day or two we shall all have to take part in a greater duel.”  He added, “you know my name and where to find me, but don't forget that I do not regard either myself or you as having been insulted, and as a man older than you, my advice is to let the matter drop.”   Andrei takes his exit after telling Boris they will speak further after the review.  Rostov soon leaves for his own camp on horseback and dwells on the interaction. He replayed the events, thinking what he ought to have said. He imagines challenging Andrei to a duel and covering him with a pistol. While he wanted to see that small proud man cower, at the same time he realized there was no one else he had come across that he would so much like to have as a friend.

Oil is trading at a 4-month low as OPEC prepares to raise production.

Despite beating lofty expectations NVDA is trading lower due to concerns about its gross margins. Major brokers remain bullish and continue to raise price their price targets. Economic data is on watch with two key reports and a host of Fed Speak. Russian tensions remain elevated as hostilities continue. After the bell today watch for earnings reports from GAP, NTAP, ROST and INTU. In Europe, stocks opened down but are turning positive. Oil prices are showing gains due to geopolitical issues.
