Sage Hopkins on Enduring the 10+ Year Investigation of Scott Shaw for Molesting Athletes

Sage Hopkins just finished his 18th season as the Head Coach at San Jose State University. It was supposed to be the first season with some closure after a 13-year scandal that exposed student-athletes to an athletic trainer who molested athletes and the coverup that surrounded it. Sage goes through the entire story, starting in 2009 when an athlete responded to his suggestion to go see the trainer, Scott Shaw, with, “No thanks. I don't want to be molested.” From there 17 swimmers gave statements that were ignored and later destroyed, echoing the sentiment about Shaw's “treatment.” That 2010 investigation was the start of an embarrassing response from the SJSU Athletic Administration, despite multiple athletes from multiple sports complaining about Shaw. Coach Hopkins didn't let that stop him from continuing to fight for the protection of the athletes but it Shaw remained at San Jose State until the pandemic in 2020. This interview details the layers of corruption that allowed Shaw to stay, and even get promoted, over a decade after the first reports. Hopkins tells us about how he was treated within the athletic department and University because he refused to drop his complaints.

Happy New Year! Wow! 2020! What an exciting time! We ring in the New Year with another challenge for our legendary duo, Art Hains and Ned Reynolds. These two broadcast gurus decided to accept another test from Coach Hopkins. We met at Ebbett's Field (thank you – such a great place to eat and catch up on the latest sports scene) and, this time, had a panel of judges/studio audience. We hosted our St. Louis Cardinals correspondent, Don Louzader who did a terrific job and is always a welcome guest on the show. We also had one of my former assistants and current school principal Misty Ramsey join us for the first-and after her performance definitely not her last-appearance! We also hosted my younger brother, and Kansas City Chiefs Superfan, Jeff Burnett-one of my favorites to have on the airwaves. The challenge was to play, what I now like to call, Play by Play Charades. I showed a one-minute video clip to Ned and Art of a lesser known sport – but still nationally or globally recognized –and, without saying what sport it is, they painted the picture so that the panel could guess. The panel had dry erase boards and after one minute, they wrote down what sport they felt like Ned and Art described. We went through 14 sports! It was fun, some they knew and some, well, I had to have some that “stumped the chumps”. Jeff was the winner with seven correct and we had a great time playing (cue dramatic music in your mind)…Play by Play Charades! Listen to the show and give it a try, see how many you get! My thanks, again, to Ebbett's Field for their hospitality. Also, thank you to Greg Burnett for compiling and selecting the sports and videos, he did an excellent job! We hit sports from all around the world. Kudos to Ned Reynolds and Art Hains for, again, proving how they are the sports broadcast legends of this area and to my stellar panel Don Louzader, Misty Ramsey, and Jeff Burnett – you all were wonderful sports and we appreciated your valued participation!

Coach Hopkins and the Washington basketball team lands another huge recruit as Jaden McDaniels decides to stay close to home, and commits to UW. Obviously, this is huge for the school, and proves that Washington is developing into a high-level basketball team that can snag elite recruits. McDaniels, like Isaiah Stewart, is likely to be a one-and-done, and the fact is that players that play for only a year often don't bring their schools a championship. Of course Hop isn't going to turn these guys down, but it'l be interesting to see how the program develops around these types of players. The NFL has announced the locations of the next few drafts, but left a gaping hole in 2022. Could they be waiting to see how the Seattle arena turns out? Maybe, maybe not, but it would be very cool to get a big event like the draft back in this town. We haven't seen anything like it here in over a decade. Husky basketball coach Mike Hopkins joins us late in the hour to discuss the recruiting class, and what next year's basketball team will look like.
