Jon Wilner of The San Jose Mercury News and Wilner Hotline joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the possible coming College Football Playoff changes, his interview with Jedd Fisch on the podcast, Demond Williams, and expectations for WSU.
How do we fix the College Football calendar? Do UW fans feel bad for the situation WSU is in? Apple Cup of Basketball recap, Great Osobor's improvement, Geno Smith health update. Fun with Audio.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - are back heading into the last recruiting weekend before the dead period hits for the holidays, so that means another chat about the transfer portal, the players that are coming and going, and who the Huskies have targeted to get in the boat now so they can enroll in time for winter quarter, which starts in early January. They start with the positive news, which is the transfer players that have committed to play for Washington next season, including a local player in former Lynden Christian star TE Kade Eldridge, who left USC for the portal and just announced his verbal commitment to the Huskies right before the start of our broadcast. Talk then moves to the UW players that have recently moved into the portal, with specific talk about Elijah Jackson and Khmori House. Were the guys surprised by those moves, and specifically with House - how much of his portal entry was dictated by the idea of Steve Belichick leaving UW to reconnect with his Dad Bill at North Carolina. Or does it also assume his position coach, Robert Bala, is also out the door? And then there's a little side detour with regards to former juco star Thaddeus Dixon, who may end up with more eligibility if the recent Diego Pavia decision means former juco players can get those junior college years back. It's certainly not a sure thing. After a quick break the guys come back to talk about recent visitors and those the Huskies are targeting now ahead of the dead period, which starts Monday, December 23 and goes through Sunday, January 5. And could there be a straggler or two that make decisions at that time but won't be able to enroll until spring? Scott talks about that. Also don't forget the fact that now players who play in college football playoff games get five days from after their last game to enter their names in the portal too, which they couldn't last season. Will that potentially mean UW holds back a spot or two if they've targeted players from those playoff teams? Kim also spoke this week with some UW players, who gave some candid thoughts on their own experiences with the portal, getting recruited behind the scenes, and how they've dealt with the attention. Jonah Coleman, Denzel Boston, and Demond Williams certainly had thoughts about it all. After that, Kim and Chris delve into Washington's 89-73 win over cross-state rival Washington State (is a basketball game between UW and WSU an Apple Cup game? The debate rages on...). And before final thoughts from the three, Kim brought up a somewhat humorous encounter he had pre-game with notorious Cougar-backer Jim Moore. It's worth listening to the end to get the whole story. Dawgman.com's Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger get into the holiday spirit this week with their Thanksgiving game week preview, but it's not the Apple Cup! Now that both Oregon and Washington are in the Big Ten and Washington State is in the college football wilderness, it's time to turn the page and look at the rivalry between UO and UW as the true big Pacific Northwest rivalry game. But before they go into the meat of the game against the No. 1 Ducks, the guys recap the UCLA win at Husky Stadium that got the Huskies to bowl eligibility. And that chat folds right into one of the big conversations for Washington fans this week; should Demond Williams start at quarterback instead of Will Rogers? The conversation then merges into a breakdown of Washington's defense and what they can try and do to stop a potent Oregon attack, and then the tables are flipped. What can Washington's offense do against Oregon's stout defense, especially their pass rush? After a break, the guys go into the players they expect to shine in their Bet to Bark segment, and then go into their Betting B1G talk where they look at other conference games and compare their season-long predictions. And then to finish up they go into their Confidence Intervals, which measures just how good they are feeling about a Washington win in Eugene. Episode 308 - A Long Distance Dedication, Shedding A Tear For Snuggles RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot Scott, travel through Grand Island, Nebraska, the birthplace of Henry Fonda and home to the Nebraska State Fair. From "On Golden Pond" and TV personality Dick Cavett, to "American Top 40," the guys reminisce on some true icons such as Casey Kasem. The Seattle Seahawks' recent performance against the Atlanta Falcons 34-14 takes them to first place in the NFC West. Highlights include Gino Smith's performance and his ability to evade pressure and make key plays. Diving deeper into the Seahawks Falcons blowout, Mitch, Jacson, and Brady discuss the improved performance of the Seahawks' defense, which held the Falcons to just 14 points despite allowing over 150 yards rushing and struggling with tackling, especially against Falcons' running back Bijan Robinson. The Seahawks' defense also created key turnovers, including a game-changing strip sack and defensive touchdown. Mitch and CBS College Football Analyst Rick Neuheisel discuss Alabama's struggles, though Rick maintains his confidence in their ability to reach the SEC Championship game, acknowledging they'll need to avoid turnovers and rely on defensive leadership. He also addresses Texas's recent loss, suggesting they need to prove themselves after facing tougher competition. The conversation shifts to officiating, with Rick expressing frustration over inconsistent calls and advocating for a centralized officiating system for college football. Rick also comments on the Army-Navy rivalry, noting the possibility of the teams playing back-to-back in the AAC Championship and then the Army-Navy game, which he finds unusual. Mitch and Christian Capel discuss the University of Washington Huskies' football season under Coach Jedd Fisch, focusing on their 4-3 record. The conversation touches on Fisch's coaching style, which Christian describes as more professional and NFL-like compared to former coach Kalen DeBoer. They also address Fisch's open comments on NIL deals and the financial disparities between schools like Ohio State, Oregon, and others. Offense vs Arkansas State Starts at 1:00 This game was functionally over [aghhhhh] at halftime. Davis Warren throws three interceptions, two are just horrible (his arm gets hit on the other), now what. Michigan self-sabotaged on wide receiver recruiting with how they run their offense the last few years and we're seeing the consequences of that now. We still haven't seen Michigan use Donovan Edwards outside, the staff just isn't maximizing the strengths of the players. The run game feels different with Mullings in at running back. A full Orji offense would be expensive to install but do they bring him in with last year's offense now? When will the coaches listen to the blogger offenses?? It's tough to evaluate the offensive line against Arkansas State but they looked less confused this week. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Arkansas State Starts at 40:02 Not much to say, Michigan dominated at the line of scrimmage which was expected. Rayshaun Benny played a great game, especially containing the quarterback. Jyaire Hill had an up and down game but broke up a slant really well, a nice bounce back after the Texas game. Martindale backed off from the funky blitzes in this game, there wasn't really anything exotic. Penalties on defense kept drives alive but this ref crew is a bit ticky tacky on penalties. 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 57:41 Takes hotter than Michigan Stadium on Saturday. Butch Jones, why are you still signaling games from the sidelines? The football gods punished Arkansas State for kicking on 4th and 1 (you should still get points off doinks). Arkansas State punter, hello. There were zero punt returns and one kick return. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:22:23 Indiana 42, UCLA 13 Congrats, Jamie. This is Indiana's biggest win against a power [4][5] since?? This was not a fluke, this was a complete beatdown. Part of this was that UCLA is not good but still, Indiana is doing a lot of good things. Indiana may never play in the Rose Bowl but they can play at the Rose Bowl! Nebraska 34, Northern Iowa 3 Nebraska scored touchdowns on their first three drives against an FCS team that has given teams fits. Northwestern 31, Eastern Illinois 7 This one was close for about a half. Northwestern just doesn't have much offense. Cheers to the weird stadium games. Michigan State 40, Prairie View A&M 0 Injuries are already starting to pile up for MSU, keep an eye on that. Minnesota 27, Nevada 0 This looks like a rock bottom version of Nevada. Illinois 30, Central Michigan 9 The score is bigger than how close this was, it may have been a hangover game for Illinois. There was a 59 yard field goal in this game! Oregon 49, Oregon State 14 Oregon got healthy in a hurry and they looked fully operational. The odds of Michigan winning a rock fight against the Ducks just went down. Purdue 7, Notre Dame 66 This was the worst loss in Purdue football history. They did average 47 yards of punting on 10 punts, though! Alabama 42, Wisconsin 10 Wisconsin loses their starting QB to injury and the backup hurt his hand. They did stick around in this game for a little bit at least. Maryland 27, Virginia 13 A nice bounce back after losing to Michigan State last week. Total yardage was fairly even but Virginia turned the ball over four times. Iowa 38, Troy 21 This was close until the very end. Iowa gives up a punt return touchdown. Iowa, if you're not punting to win, what are you doing? Folks aren't thrilled with how Cade is playing. Washington State 24, Washington 19 Wazzu's coach said they're never giving the Apple Cup trophy back! Michigan may have taken a step back but look at Washington, this does happen. In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods recap all 13 Big Ten week three games, reveal their newest Big Ten Power rankings, discuss how their picks against the spread went (Ryan was 6-4, David 5-5) and update their mythical Pac-12 Power Rankings. They also talk about the latest news in the conference realignment world where the Pac-12 is raiding the Mountain West, taking San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State and Colorado State in an attempt to rebuild the once proud Conference of Champions. There were a lot more blowouts this week than what we have seen so far this season, some that were good for the conference and some that were bad. The Ducks pasted Oregon State on the road while Minnesota, Nebraska and Michigan State won by a combined score of 101-3 against overmatched opponents. But in more important games Wisconsin wasn't competitive against Alabama, Notre Dame spanked Purdue 66-7, Washington State topped the Huskies in the Apple Cup and Michigan struggled to beat Arkansas State in the Big House. Maryland did bounce back with a nice win on the road at Virginia and Indiana continues to impress, humiliating UCLA in the Rose Bowl for both team's Big Ten openers. Today's, Daily Puck Drop, Jason “Puck” Puckett and Jim Moore celebrate the Cougs win in the Apple Cup! Puck makes Jim give him credit for John Mateer!!! :). Jim and Puck speculate on if the Cougs can now run the table with their schedule. Curtis Crabtree and Tim Booth stop by to talk Seahawks on the “HawksNest.” The top storyline is the play of Geno Smith and how that was without a doubt the best game he's ever played in a Seahawks uniform. They touch in on the play of the offensive line and try to figure out what they can do to improve the play of their guards, specifically Laken Tomlinson and Anthony Bradford. They praised the way that Ryan Grubb called the game and decided to target his best players in JSN and DK, as they combined to have 30 targets in the game. One concern from the game was the play of the defense in that they allowed 185 yards on the ground. Jim Duquette, of MLB Network Radio stops by for his weekly visit talking Mariners and other top MLB storylines. Puck and Jim are amazed that the Mariners are still in the playoff race but Jim warns Puck and M's fans that if they barley make it in or barely miss the reaction and emotions from fans should be the same and that is that this year was a disappointment. Because the division was so bad and Houston was so banged up the Mariners should have rolled the division and they did not. Jim tells Puck that it's paramount that Edgar Martinez stays on as hitting coach next season because it's clear he's made a difference with the team and specifically Julio. At the end of the chat, Jim says there is no way that Shohei Ohtani pitches in the playoffs, despite Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hinting at the possibility. Lastly, “What the Puck!?” Puck talks about his good friend Ian Furness being named the new television studio host for the Seattle Kraken. Rundown00:00 Puck and Jim can't stop smiling about the Apple Cup win! 06:26 Mateer is a stud 08:46 Puck tells Jim about the game experience and making it there by halftime 10:07 Jedd Fisch was a disaster as a head coach on Saturday 12:40 Back to Mateer…Give him the Heisman! :) 14:21 Can the Cougs run the table??19:52 Puck tells Jim about rushing the field with his kids 28:51 Husky fans should crush Fisch for the decisions he made Saturday 34:47 Jim is headed to Dad's weekend, and asks Puck for his tickets…Should Puck give him the tickets for free?39:31 “HawksNest” Curtis Crabtree & Tim Booth breakdown the Seahawks win 42:39 Geno Smith was sensational 45:55 Offensive line issues for the Hawks, but did they play better?51:51 Thank god for Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator! 56:40 Defense took a step back 01:01:10 Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio…M's are still alive01:05:49 Despite better play, Mariners ownership needs to be held accountable 01:11:41 Keeping Edgar Martinez around…They need him 01:14:45 Even if the Mariners make it, still is a massive disappointing season for Seattle. Didn't take advantage of weak division.
Bump and Stacy look back on the second-worst goal line play call Seattle fans have ever seen from this weekend's Apple Cup, they give you their thoughts on what the Mariners series win over the Rangers does to the AL West race in Headline Rewrites, they break down just how good Geno Smith was in this weekend’s win against the Patriots, and they hear what Mike Macdonald had to say about Ryan Grubb’s offense.
Bump and Stacy are joined by Mike Vorel of The Seattle Times to get his thoughts on the Huskies disastrous goal line play call and what this Apple Cup win means for WSU, they look back on the things that caught their eye from the Seahawks win over the Patriots, they give you their thoughts on the Mariners AL West standings after their series win over the Rangers in Headline Rewrites, and they bring you some of the biggest stories around week two of the NFL, including why the Steelers gave Russell Wilson a “petty” game ball.
Richard and Alex give you a loaded but brief recap of everything interesting in college football's Week 3. West Virginia blows another road Backyard Brawl, Washington State delivers some justice, FSU's misery continues, LSU and South Carolina play a wild (and long) one, South Alabama scores 87 points, and notes from dozens more games over the weekend. RUNDOWN The Seattle Seahawks' performance in their season opener was not a huge confidence booster. But their throwback uniforms a huge success. Mitch shares thoughts on the upcoming Apple Cup, which will be played earlier than usual in September at Lumen Field, questioning Washington's chances against Washington State. The Mariners' slim playoff hopes, are they still in it? The Seahawks' first game of the season ended with a 26-20 victory over the Denver Broncos, a performance characterized by a strong defense but struggles on the offensive line. Seahawks' No-Table discuss key moments, including a crucial third-down conversion by Tyler Lockett and standout defensive plays, like Tariq Woolen's interception. Concerns were raised about the offensive line, exacerbated by injuries, including the loss of George Fant. Mitch and CBS college football analyst Rick Neuheisel discuss college football highlights, Neuheisel's predictions, and recent games. Neuheisel celebrates his correct prediction of Texas's strong performance, while admitting Notre Dame still has work to do despite his playoff hopes for them. He highlights elite teams like Georgia, Texas, and Ole Miss, and points to Alabama and Tennessee as potential contenders despite issues. Neuheisel criticizes Deion Sanders' media behavior and questions Colorado's long-term future under his leadership. He praises teams like Nebraska for improvement, and notes Alabama's penalties may have obscured their offensive capabilities. Neuheisel predicts LSU will cover the spread against South Carolina, maintaining his winning streak on Mitch Unfiltered. The Seattle Mariners have won four of their last six games, staying competitive in both the AL West and the wild card race. Mariners' No-Table discuss the team's improved performance, highlighted by better offensive stats, including 38 runs over five games. Despite this, they remain five or six games behind Houston and face challenges with tough schedules ahead.
