This is the seventh and final episode in my series of conversations with author OLIVER SODEN regarding his recent book: MASQUERADE: THE LIVES OF NOEL COWARD This week we explore the final chapters of both Coward's life and this brilliant biography. Remarkably, during the final decade of his life Coward wrote the book, music & lyrics for two Broadway musicals — SAIL AWAY (starring Elaine Stritch) and THE GIRL WHO CAME TO SUPPER (Starring Jose Ferer & Florence Henderson), and directed HIGH SPIRITS (with book, music & lyrics by Hugh Martin & Timothy Gray and starring Tammy Grimes & Beatrice Lillie) which was based on Coward's play Blithe Spirit. At the same time he enjoyed an extraordinary revival of his status as a playwright of including landmark productions of PRIVATE LIVES and HAY FEVER as the first play by a living author to be presented at the National Theatre, and culminating in a remarkable trio of new plays under the title of SUITE IN THREE KEYS that he wrote and starred in. And I feel certain that you will find Soden's account of Coward's final public appearance, with Marlene Dietrich on his arm, at a special performance of the hit off-Broadway revue Oh, Coward! to be very moving. My guest again this week is Oliver Soden whose recent book is titled Masquerade – The Lives of Noel Coward. I am devoting more episodes to this book than I have to any previous books, but I found the writing and research to be so exceptional, and this conversation with Soden to be so captivating that I don't want you to miss any of it. Today Oliver and I focus on a very difficult period in Noel Coward's career when his was seen to be seriously out of step with the theatrical world of post-war Britain. However, in his personal life during this same time he meets the man who will become his life partner, Graham Payn. If you missed the previous episode in this series you may want to catch up with those before listening to this one. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! My guest this week is OLIVER SODEN, the author of a truly remarkable new book: Masquerade — The Lives of Noel Coward. As frequent listeners to this podcast may remember, as a teenager growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, I developed an unlikely affinity for all things related to Noel Coward, inspired I am sure by that double record cast recording of the 1972 musical revue, Oh, Coward! — an album that I still love listening to. And from then on I was hooked! So this book is right in my wheelhouse! This is the first biography of Coward in nearly thirty years and it is a spectacular achievement — incredibly thorough and brilliantly researched. Perhaps most remarkably, as the title would indicate, Oliver Soden is able to encompass all of the many lives of Noel Coward — including his multiple careers as actor, singer, dancer, playwright, lyricist, composer, director, media celebrity, screenwriter, film director, and night club entertainer, as well as his hair-raising espionage career during World War II and his personal life, and romantic gay relationships which, of course, had to be kept secret at the time. But because of Soden's exclusive and unrestricted access to Coward's unpublished diaries and correspondence they are revealed here in more detail than ever before. And I was especially happy that this book gives equal weight to Coward's musicals, revues, and songs as it does to his brilliant plays. Oliver Sodon is a writer and broadcaster whose previous books include the critically acclaimed 2019 biography of composer Michael Tippett. Oliver's writing on art, music and literature has appeared in the Guardian, Spectator, London Review of Books, and the Times Literary Supplement, and he is a frequent guest speaker on BBC radio and television broadcasts. Noel Coward was without a doubt one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th Century, and as you will hear over the next several episodes, Oliver Soden and I had a great time discussing Coward and this extraordinary new biography. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! This episode is made possible in part through the generous support of our Patron Club members. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.06.22.546124v1?rss=1 Authors: Simon, R. C., Loveless, M. C., Yee, J. X., Hashikawa, K., Stuber, G. D., Zweifel, L. S., Soden, M. E. Abstract: The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a critical node in circuits governing motivated behavior and is home to diverse populations of neurons that release dopamine, GABA, glutamate, or combinations of these neurotransmitters. The VTA receives inputs from many brain regions, but a comprehensive understanding of input-specific activation of VTA neuronal subpopulations is lacking. To address this, we combined optogenetic stimulation of select VTA inputs with single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNAseq) and highly multiplexed in situ hybridization to identify distinct neuronal clusters and characterize their spatial distribution and activation patterns. Quantification of immediate early gene (IEG) expression revealed that different inputs activated select VTA subpopulations, which demonstrated cell-type specific IEG programs. Within dopaminergic subpopulations IEG induction levels correlated with differential expression of ion channel genes. This new transcriptomics-guided circuit analysis reveals the diversity of VTA activation driven by distinct inputs and provides a resource for future analysis of VTA cell types. The latest serious threat to our rights and freedoms of movement is now facing us in the form of so-called “15-minute cities.” Naturally, these come cloaked in apparent noble intent all in the name of combatting “Climate Change,” (and without any kind of democratic consultation,) but in reality, they're yet further stepping stones towards New World Order totalitarianism. Oxford has been chosen as the blueprint for such a scheme, and this will be because of the system-minded mentality this city has long had. Resistance from locals is already very apparent, however, and it seems there will be a whole lot more to come, not least from the day of activism scheduled for 18th February. Laura Soden represents one of the groups which has been set up to oppose this Draconian over-reach, and to inform others that what is allowed to happen in Oxford today, will be coming to everybody else's hometown tomorrow … but ONLY if we allow it. Will we? More info here - https://t.me/noclimatelockdown

It's that time of the year. It's the end of the racing season and the holidays are approaching quickly. Now is the time you might be considering upgrading your equipment, whether by adding on to your favorite frame or buying a brand-new bike altogether. The blizzard of information, potential or promised benefits, and the wide range of products on the market can leave you confused or frustrated with a purchase that simply isn't right for you. Today on the Purple Patch Podcast, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes Chris Soden of IOG Bike Fitting to the show. With over 25 years in the cycling industry and an extensive background as a professional bike fitter and industry consultant, Chris shares his in-depth knowledge of custom and high-end bike sales and fittings to help you wade through some of the difficult decisions athletes and fitness enthusiasts of all levels face when considering a bike upgrade. Matt and Chris discuss five key elements and tips if you are contemplating or considering either upgrading your bike, buying a brand new bike, or even thinking about getting a used bike, as well as how you can avoid many of the pitfalls of a new purchase to make sure that you're investing in the right place. Topics Matt and Chris Cover include: Making the Right Choice: What to consider when choosing a new bike (10:54) "As much as possible, what I try to get people to do is to actually look internally. We all want to watch what athletes just won a race and what athlete is on some new fun products, but really...look internally and be honest with the riding that you're going to do." - Chris Soden Common Mistakes: Elements that lead to a bad fit Best Investment For Your Return: Where to save money and where to spend (23:57) "As with many things in life, audio equipment, and cooking gear, whatever it is, you get to a point where you start spending cubic dollars for kind of marginal gains. And for some athletes, those marginal gains are the make or break." - Chris Soden Saddle Choice: The importance of getting it right (27:06) You can fidget with everything else. If you don't have your saddle dialed in, if your saddle isn't a seven or an eight out of a 1 to 10 scale, frankly, you're just going to be spinning your wheels." - Chris Soden Going Faster: Worthwhile investments for improving speed Used Bikes: The pros and cons of second-hand rides (35:01) So right off the bat, we're not buying the thing that we have the chance to buy new. We're buying this thing that's been altered, changed, and edited...And my question is always, does this bike allow proper bike fit." - Chris Soden The IOG Experience: How to access a good fit with Chris, Ivan, and the team at IOG Bike Fitting (50:09) "We've certainly helped people with new bikes, we've certainly helped people that they've progressed into different products or asked about certain upgrades. And I think the end results for us have been just a continual affirmation that this information and this expertise is very, very valuable. It's very welcome, and we're happy to be a part of it."

Miau

Dr John Soden, co-author of "In the Beginning... We Misunderstood", joins us to talk about his testimony, as well as how people with varying views on Genesis can have unity. He discusses how important context is to understanding the book of Genesis and how the Egyptian captivity played a role in how God chose to communicate His truths with His people. Discussing the beginning of the universe can be a tricky subject. When we think about how we understand Genesis 1, it is important that we come with an open mind and strong faith. . Gina Soden is a fine art photographer with a fascination for derelict architecture. She travels around the world seeking decayed and abandoned buildings which become the subjects of her beautiful images. Once loved ball rooms, halls, country houses which have been vacant for decades are her favourite subject matters. Her images show how nature has often grown into the empty spaces on one hand breathing new life into the structures and at the same time drawing attention to the past. The structures she chooses are often highly decorated with frescoes, gilding and carving. The mind is always drawn to how these spaces would have been used in their hey day. Despite the love shown at the construction the buildings are now boarded up or sealed. Soden considers the research that goes into the choosing the locations, as part of the process for her work. The images are printed as large format photographs pulling the viewer into the space. More recently the artist has begun applying the images to metal surfaces and for her exhibition Archeologies at Charlie Smith Gallery she is showing the work on vintage mirrors which add another dimension to the art work. In this episode Gina talks about her process, getting locked into a property , working towards the Archeologies exhibition and selling through her website.
