Bob and Randy were joined this week by Monica Wheat, Managing Director of Techstars Detroit Powered by JP Morgan. Before that, she most recently led Techstars Equitech in Baltimore. First, Bob and Monica talked about Techstars. Techstars is a global seed-stage accelerator in 40+ cities worldwide. Over 500 companies participate each year. There are over 15,000 investors, 7,000 mentors, and 3,000 alumni in the Techstars network. Techstars Detroit is a 13-week hybrid/virtual program that starts on September 12, 2022. Participating companies will have access to up to $120,000 in investment, plus support from JP Morgan, and resources and benefits to help their business grow and succeed. Two Detroit companies participated in Techstars Equitech, which was focused on diversity and equity. They are Athlytic, a marketplace that connects student athletes to endorsement opportunities and Sparen Homes, a person-to-person real estate marketplace where people can buy and sell real estate themselves without a bank or an agent. Both are currently currently raising seed rounds. Another company from Techstars Equitech is EcoMap, a company that builds platforms that digitize ecosystems. It has just closed a $3.5M seed round! Randy asked Monica about Detroit Startup Week. It is the largest entrepreneurship conference in Michigan. It's a collection of education events all about entrepreneurs and building and growing businesses. It attached to Detroit Demo Day, where companies pitch for a share of funding to help them grow. Bob and Monica also talked about what makes a company a startup, plus Bob pitched some interesting busines ideas. Jenny Feterovich is an award-winning TV and film Producer known for the hit TV show “START UP” and the feature film “The Russian Five” along with many other projects. She is the Executive Producer of Muse Production House and co-founder of Parliament Studios. She's a lifelong entrepreneur and small business advocate, focusing on empowering women and immigrants in business. Jenny also made a name in the music world as the globetrotting DJ Jenny LaFemme and co-creator of Girls Gone Vinyl, a project that highlights and advances women in electronic music. Jenny arrived in the US with 6 suitcases and $100 to her name. Her family fled their native Russia and landed in Detroit in 1989, immediately jumping into small business. Since then, she has created several corporations, worked with several Fortune 500 companies (including American Express, General Motors, State Farm, Jaguar Land Rover, UPS, Microsoft, GoDaddy), and had travelled as a motivational speaker. An advocate for and leader in transportation mobility, Lisa started her career at the City of Detroit office as a Business Analyst and shortly after became the Chief of Staff to House Majority Leader Steve Tobocman. A few years later, she went back to the City of Detroit working as a Senior Associate where she helped bring Code for America to the Motor City. It wasn’t too long after that when she started to dip her toes into the mobility industry. Amanda Roraff has produced and planned events and trade shows for multiple companies for over 20 years. After getting her Bachelor’s Degree from the James Madison College of Public Policy at Michigan State, she started out as a Programs Manager in the dental industry, of all places. Shortly after that, however, she became the Operations Manager for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, effectively kickstarting her career in tech. A few jobs after that she monetized her event production skills and became an independent consultant for a variety of companies, including (but not limited to) Blue Cross Blue Shield, Covenant Community Care, and BI Worldwide.
