Scammers aren't just phishing your inbox anymore—they're impersonating your voice, your face, and even your coworkers. Deep fakes and social engineering have moved beyond clever tricks and become powerful tools that bad actors are using to infiltrate businesses, breach accounts, and dismantle trust at scale. What used to take a hacker hours and expensive tools can now be done in minutes by anyone with a Wi-Fi connection and a little malicious intent. Our guest today is Aaron Painter, CEO of Nametag, a company leading the charge in next-generation identity verification. Aaron's background includes 14 years at Microsoft and executive roles in cloud tech across Europe and Asia. After witnessing firsthand how easily identity theft could unravel lives—especially during the shift to remote everything—he founded Nametag to answer a critical question: how can we know who's really behind the screen? With Nametag, Aaron is building real-time, high-security ID checks that are already reshaping how help desks and businesses protect users. In this conversation, we unpack the difference between authentication and identity, why traditional methods like security questions are dangerously outdated, and how mobile tech and biometrics are changing the game. Aaron also shares practical tips on protecting your most valuable digital asset—your email—and what consumers and companies alike can do to stay ahead of evolving threats. This one's packed with insight, and more relevant than ever. Show Notes: [00:54] Aaron is the CEO of Nametag. A company he started 5 years ago that focuses on identity verification at high-risk moments. [01:37] He spent 14 years at Microsoft working on product including at Microsoft China. Summary On this episode of Chattinn Cyber, Marc is chattin' with Aaron Painter, a seasoned enterprise tech executive with years at Microsoft and experience leading operations in China and the UK, shares the origin story of his company, Nametag. After observing the rise in identity theft among friends and family, Aaron was struck by how outdated and vulnerable identity verification processes had become—especially the ease with which attackers could answer common security questions using publicly available data. The conversation turns to the evolution of cyber threats, particularly social engineering and deepfake-enabled attacks. Painter outlines a disturbing trend where attackers bypass even sophisticated technological protections like multi-factor authentication (MFA) by exploiting weak points in human processes, such as IT help desks. One example he highlights is the MGM breach, where a phone-based social engineering tactic led to significant damage. Painter emphasizes that many organizations' defenses rely on trust in video verification—such as Zoom or Teams calls—but that these platforms are now susceptible to real-time deepfake emulation. Attackers can impersonate employees or candidates using advanced visual spoofing tools, bypassing traditional verification methods and gaining access to critical systems. To address these vulnerabilities, Nametag offers a mobile-first identity verification solution that leverages smartphone cryptography and biometric tools to take three-dimensional selfies and securely scan IDs. This process ensures stronger identity proofing, even under conditions that would normally be vulnerable to deepfake deception or impersonation. The episode concludes with Painter warning HR professionals about the increasing threat of hiring fraud—where bad actors impersonate real candidates using deepfakes. He advises that companies don't need to replace existing systems like Workday or Okta but should instead implement layered solutions that complement current infrastructure and close critical security gaps. Key Points Cybersecurity Gaps Are Human, Not Just Technical: Despite widespread use of MFA, social engineering attacks targeting help desk personnel remain a primary threat vector. Deepfakes Are Evolving Rapidly: Attackers increasingly use deepfake technologies to impersonate employees or job applicants on video calls, rendering basic visual verification untrustworthy. Nametag's Mobile-First Approach: Nametag strengthens identity verification by using mobile devices' cryptographic and biometric capabilities to combat real-time deepfake impersonation. Hiring Fraud Is a Growing Threat: Criminals, sometimes state-sponsored, use deepfake tools to impersonate legitimate job candidates, gain access to internal systems, and cause serious security breaches. Enterprise Integration Over Replacement: Painter advocates for bolting on new security layers rather than replacing entire systems—filling in gaps while preserving operational continuity. Key Quotes “All you have to do is call and pretend to be the account holder and say you were locked out. Then there's a clear vulnerability. And that vulnerability is a social one or human one.” “The platforms weren't really built to prevent against deepfakes… You've got that person showing up completely different on the video call.” “95% of the background check providers do it with a Social Security number and no identity verification.” “We invented the same concept of scan your ID and take a selfie—but we do it exclusively on mobile.” “I knew identity verification was a hot area. I had no idea it would be this hot.” About Our Guest Aaron Painter is the visionary CEO of Nametag Inc., the pioneering identity verification platform dedicated to protecting users from impersonators and AI-generated deepfakes. We easily mislabel sin because we do not want to admit that what we are doing is wrong. #daybydaylw Interested in learning more about becoming a devoted follower of Christ? Go to follow.lifeword.org. ~~~ Sin doesn't come to us with the name tag of sin, but wearing some other name. We see it for what it is right now on this page of scripture, but how easily do we excuse sin in our own lives, and others' sin by using false labels. How often do we excuse young men of their laxness by calling it adolescence? How often do we excuse a young man's mischievousness by saying, “Boys will be boys,”? How often do we excuse someone's greed and stinginess by calling it prudent and thrifty? How often do we try to lessen adultery by saying, “I fell in love,”? You see what I mean? We easily mislabel sin because we do not want to see what we are doing as sin, and therein lies the lie, the treachery, the deceitfulness. This is why it is important the counsel we keep, and we guard from whom we take advice. Jonadab noticed Amnon's misery, and lept at the chance to get some type of advantage, some leverage, some favor in his pocket to cash in at a later point in time. Be careful of the ones who tell you what you already want to hear, who mislabel sin for you, who are unwilling to lay before the full effects that your sin will cause.
In this episode of The Business of Tech, host Dave Sobel engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Aaron Painter, CEO of NameTag, about the evolving landscape of identity verification in the face of emerging threats like deep fakes. The conversation begins with an exploration of traditional identity verification methods, particularly multi-factor authentication (MFA), and their limitations. Painter emphasizes that while MFA is a critical first step in securing accounts, it is not sufficient on its own, especially when recovery processes can be exploited by malicious actors impersonating legitimate users. As the dialogue progresses, Painter introduces the concept of behavioral biometrics and AI-powered verification as potential advancements in security. He explains how these technologies can monitor user behavior to determine if the person accessing an account is indeed the same individual who logged in. However, he also highlights the challenges associated with these methods, particularly in scenarios where identity verification is crucial, such as during account recovery or hiring processes. The discussion underscores the need for more robust identity verification practices that go beyond traditional methods. The episode also delves into the growing adoption of passkeys as a solution for identity verification. Painter notes that while passkeys are gaining traction, particularly among larger tech companies, their implementation in small to mid-sized businesses remains limited. He points out that passkeys are not a complete replacement for passwords and still rely on traditional recovery methods, which can create vulnerabilities. This leads to a broader conversation about the importance of understanding the limitations of current technologies and the need for a comprehensive approach to identity security. Finally, the conversation shifts to the implications of deep fakes on identity verification. Painter warns that the technology enabling deep fakes has become increasingly accessible, posing significant risks for organizations relying on visual verification methods. He advocates for a more advanced approach to identity verification that combines AI, cryptography, and biometrics to create a stronger defense against impersonation. The episode concludes with a call to action for organizations to rethink their identity verification processes and adapt to the evolving threat landscape, emphasizing the importance of knowing who users are in a digital world. Today on Cyber Work, we're talking about last September's breach of the MGM Grand Casino chain, an attack that lead to a week of tech failure, downtime and over a hundred million dollars in lost revenue. The attackers were able to get in via a point that my guest, Aaron Painter of Nametag Inc, said is a common point of failure: the request for a password and credential reset from the helpdesk, and the ever-frustrating “security questions” approach to making sure you are who you are. Nametag is built to create an alternative to security questions and go beyond MFA to create a method of verification that is even resistant to AI Deepfake attempts!
