Masters At Work, Todd Terry, David Morales, Murk, Blaze,Basement Boys, 重要厂牌有 Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, 8ball, irma, 重要人物 DJ Larry Levan,DJ Tony Humphries, Wayne Gardiner (aka Logic aka Classic Man), 特点是低频过滤的 organ;被认为是 UK Garage 教父的 Grant Nelson 于 1993 年成立厂牌 Nice ‘n' Ripe,是最早在英国开始制作 Garage House 的DJ 之一,他加入英国舞曲特有的 breakbeat ,突出鼓和低音部分,UKG 开始形成,还有一位新泽西 DJ Todd Edwards 在英国也是重要先驱;1996 年左右开始出现 Speed Garage,英国的低音特色影响更加明显,Garage 在俱乐部场景中不再小众,以白标唱片为载体的 UKG 开始出现在主流电台;我最爱的 UKG 时期,2000 年代左右的 2 Step 更加 R&B,在全球范围内产生影响至今,我们最爱的女孩团体 Mis-Teeq 贡献出两张元素丰富的佳作;千禧年的美国 R&B 也有很多 2 Step 元素,同时期 UKG 对澳大利亚和日本也有巨大影响,老林推荐的 m-flo “Expo Expo”(2001) 是非常典型的 UKG 2 Step,同时还有独特的 J-pop 风格;2 Step 开始加上MC 的 rhyme ,重要代表是 So Solid Crew,在主流 UK chart 上成绩亮眼;2000 初 Grime 开始形成, 相比 UKG+MC的形式,Grime的出现是独树一帜的,再次表达对 Dizzee Rascal 的崇拜;UKG 持续影响产生的 Dubstep,是最容易被误解的一种风格,与 Grime 平行发展,推荐厂牌 Tempa Recordings,代表音乐人 Digital Mystikz, Burial;2000s 后期出现了一种新的类型 UK Funky ,融合了非洲节奏,拉丁音乐,加勒比音乐元素,但这个解释对于我们来说仍然比较模糊,所以我们反推定义这种风格主要特征是,既不是 Grime 也不是蹬腿儿 2 Step,有 reggaeton  且更偏 house;2020 开始,2 Step 的回潮或许能为当下音乐趋势带来新的思路,再次回顾千禧年代的流行乐,我们需要给予UKG 更多的关注和赞美,真是个好时代,我爱千禧年。Playlist:Sweet Female Attitude – “Flowers”Logic – “The Warning (Inner Mix) “Grant Nelson – “Loosen Up (Dirty Dub Mix)”Mis-Teeq – “That Type of Girl”m-flo – “come again”So Solid Crew – “They Don't Know”Digital Mystikz – “Anti War Dub”Kyla – “Do you Mind” (Crazy Cousinz Remix)Artful Dodger – “Movin Too Fast”老林的UKG歌单 必读文章:UK Garage History & Family Tree: 20 Years of UKG! by: Lexis & Dr.LoveNice ‘N' Ripe: The rise and fall of the legendary UK garage label推荐 YouTube 频道: BearingUKBoiler Room UKG 特别专题 给主播写信:sonicelsa@gmail.comNewsletter & 播客订阅 hidesssss.substack.com This is a public episode. Jockstrap, Flux Pavilion and Mala discuss writing music on games consoles, passing the baton between each other in collaboration, music connecting in the right time and place, and hearing your songs in a club. Jockstrap are Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye, a duo from London who are changing the indie world with their genre-bending debut album I Love You Jennifer B. The pair met when Georgia was studying jazz and spotted Taylor wearing tartan pyjamas on his way to do his laundry. They meld together a kaleidoscopic blend of pop, disco, jazz, dubstep, with classical influences, impressionistic lyrics, and lush melodies. For more than a decade, electronic producer and dubstep trailblazer Josh Steele, aka Flux Pavilion, pioneered new bass sounds for the dancefloor, before co-founding the influential Circus Records label. He's now in a new era of productivity, using analog synth-driven melodies to create new soundscapes. Pioneering dance music producer and DJ Mark Lawrence, aka Mala, changed UK dance music forever with the creation of dubstep, slowing down the tempo, increasing the snap of the percussion, and adding shelf-wobbling, ear-splitting bass to the music. He's also the co-founder of production duo Digital Mystikz.

In this week's episode, we celebrate Black History Month! I talk about the roots of electronic dance music (EDM) and how they tie back to African American roots. We discuss the origins founders of House music, Techno, and Dubstep that were all created by black men. Dj Frankie Knuckles, DJ, Ron Hardy, and Larry Levan created the genre house music in the 1970s. The Belleville Three is a group credited with inventing the musical style known as Detroit Techno. The group consists of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. Digital Mystikz started the genre dubstep as a duo consisting of Mala (Mark Lawrence) and Coki ( Dean Harris) from South London. From a Croydon record shop called Big Apple to sold-out arenas in the city that goes by the same name, in the mid part of the 2000s to early in the following decade, a scene was born, exploded and its cultured ashes pissed on from a great height by an ugly American wave known ominously as EDM. Digital Mystikz, Coki and Mala, Loefah, Kode 9 a young Skream and Benga and many more helped transform a dark offshoot of UK garage into a dub-inspired haven of crackling tension and claustrophobic bass that would thunder through sound systems and onto dark and dank dancefloors. Those familiar with the sound's post-2010 demise may struggle to comprehend the gravity of this movement on electronic music at large. For those few years, dubstep was London's new punk. A blistering, DIY bolt of energy that warped sounds, crossed genres, and made clubbing exciting again. Honouring the scene's true sound, DJ Simm takes us on a quick tour from the underground to the edge of crossover with a selection of dubstep classics that stay true to their roots from beginning to end. Earlier this summer, I had the chance to speak with Mala, a DJ, producer, promotor and record label owner from south London, who over the last decade, has played a central role in the development of the dubstep scene. Both his own productions as Mala, and those as Digital Mystikz alongside Coki, are sited as some of the key releases that defined those early days of the genre, and his record label, Deep Medi, has catalogued releases from many of the scene's innovators over the past 11 years. His now legendary club night, DMZ, alongside FWD, has played a seminal role in incubating the genre from it's early form through to today. Despite dubstep's ever-morphing progression and partial shift into the mainstream through EDM, Mala has remained true to his own personal vision. He's expanded his horizons, and developed both as an artist and a person through his solo album projects which explore the musical and cultural traditions of other countries, firstly Cuba in 2011, and now Peru, fusing them with his south... Originally from the small town of Dillingen in Bavaria, Moritz shifted from his classical piano roots to stoner rock, noise and Mobb Deep in his early teens, until he discovered dubstep courtesy of the Rinse FM's compilation "I Love Dubstep"that exposed him to artists such as Pinch, Digital Mystikz, Loefah and Burial. This mix and interview also celebrates the release of Moritz's first ever 12" vinyl record released on Fourth Wave. In the interview below we discuss his roots into discovering electronic music and his relationship with Fourth Wave including Gerry Read and label manager Thomas Kerridge. Leibniz also sheds light into Leipzig's oldest techno club "The Distillery", which is sadly facing closure.

Bristol and bass music have been happy bedfellows for a long, long time, but in recent years a new wave of producers, promoters and DJs have been properly shaking up the city's clubs, pubs, bars and warehouses, throwing traditional dub, reggae and dancehall flavours into the hotpot alongside dubstep, grime, ragga, breakcore and jungle — crews such as P.R.A.N.K., Dissident, Heatwave and Hench, and events such as Subloaded, Dubloaded, Toxic Dancehall and Ruffnek Diskotek, to name a few. Dub Boy, aka Tim Rayner, is one of the driving forces behind Ruffnek Diskotek — a regular fixture about town that sticks doggedly to its mantra of supplying 'riddim and bass to wind up yuh waist', roping in many of the scene's biggest names and all the best local acts to ensure the job gets done properly. Tim's quite a selector, having played alongside luminaries ranging from David Rodigan and Digital Mystikz to Klute and Congo Natty. He recently sent over this brand new 38-track reggae and dancehall mix to Spannered, which we're sure you'll agree is an absolute stonker. ^ The next Ruffnek Discotek takes place at The Croft, Bristol on Friday 2 November, with guests including Benga (Big Apple), Rossi B and Toddla T.   Tracklisting:  Collie Buddz — Blind To You (Black Chiney) Anthony Cruz — Lose Dem Head (Juke Boxx) Tanya Stephens — Let It Go Girl (Juke Boxx) Lady Saw — Good Men(Juke Boxx) Fantan Mojah — Jah Time (Juke Boxx) Chuck Fender — Gash Dem (Juke Boxx) Perfect — One Life (Irie Ites) Sizzla – Show More Love (Irie Ites) Lutan Fyah — A Lie (Irie Ities) Fantan Mojah — So Many Problems In The World (Irie Ites) Turbulence & Spectacular — High Grade (Irie Ites) YT— No Sandweed (Sativa) Daville — Blaze The Chalice (Maximum Sound) Burro Banton — Man Guinep (Maximum Sound) Ward 21 —– Ain’t No Fun (Maximum Sound) Shaggy, Red Fox & Screechie Dan — Girls Like (Massive B) Collie Buddz — What Ive Been Searching For (Massive B) Ill Inspector — Come Fight We (Massive B) Chezidek — Me Nah Run (Massive B) Movado — Dying (Daseca) Junior Reid — Stop Dip The Youths Them (JR Productions) Singer Blue — If I Know Jah Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry — Blackboard Jungle Dub (Clocktower) Alborosie — Holy Mount Zion (Maximum Sound) Chezidek — ?
