During this episode of the SIMM-podcast we focus on the role composers may play within participatory social and community music projects. You will during this episode hear 3 composers, who have different perspectives and ideas about the questions we ask them. They are practitioners within social music projects, as well as scholars developing research on this practice: Cathy Milliken from Australia (1:14->32:34), Michal Kawecki from Poland (32:37->51:28), and Fiona Evison from Canada (51:30->1:01). This is again a somewhat longer episode, of about an hour, but we think it makes sense to take the time to listen to the details Cathy, Michal and Fiona share with us about their practice and their research in this field.Cathy Milliken will be one of the facilitators of the 2nd SIMM research seminar on the role of composers in social and community music projects, organised from 9 to 11 May 2025 at the MusikFabrik in Cologne. Deadline for applications is 31st December 2024 (see call here).Referenced during this podcast-episode: Claire Bishop ('Participation'), Peter Brook, John Cage, Rebecca Cohen, Creative Minds in Song, Guildhall School, Mind Foundation UK, My Child Fell (Isobel Lane & Michal Kawecki), Gavin Roberts, Song in the City, Thomas Turino ('Music as Social Life - The Politics of Participation'),  The transcription of this episode can be found here.During this episode music is shortly heard from Steve Reich's 'Drumming' (played by the Ictus Ensemble), as well as rehearsal recordings of the Kinshasa based traditional drummers ensemble Beta Mbonda.Contact: info@simm-platform.eu

Tänaseks on kabinetid seitsmes erinevas linnas üle Eesti. Hugon was born in Galway. His mother was Irish and his father Polish. He went to school in the Jesuits' St Ignatius College Galway, finishing up in Blackrock College for the final five years. Back then to Galway and UCG where he completed a BA in French and German followed by the H Dip. In UCG he captained the highly successful under 19 team which won the Connaught league and cup that year. The next five very enjoyable years were spent teaching and coaching in Clongowes. He then moved to Blackrock College where he taught for 39 years (coming to a total of 44 years teaching, 4 more than necessary for a full pension). When asked why he did the extra four years he said: "I'm not a Maths teacher, I lost count" He played Junior rugby with Wanderers in Dublin and when injury brought that to a end he took up windsurfing, sailing (with Glenans Sailing Club) followed by hillwalking and mountaineering. Having climbed the Matterhorn, Eiger and Mont Blanc (twice!) he founded a hillwalking club called "Glenwalk" which in its heyday had over 800 members. Hugon retired 4 years ago and currently lives in Monkstown with his wife Catherine. He spends his time cycling, hillwalking, teaching IT skills with "Age Action" to elderly learners and he also volunteers with the "Bike Hub" which is a social enterprise in Dún Laoghaire where he helps out repairing and delivering bikes to those unable to afford them. The rest of the time he spends going to CWC reunions and listening to Rossa's excellent podcasts!!

What if I don't want a traditional long-term care plan? Last week, we covered the basics of traditional long-term care options. On this episode, I'll continue my conversation with Nancy Simms and dive into the logistics of hybrid long-term care coverage and the Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... What is a hybrid long-term care policy? [1:14]  Examples of life insurance policies with added long-term care [9:09] The tax-deductibility of long-term care plans [10:32] The underwriting process of long-term care plans [12:15] Looking at the logistics of hybrid long-term care plans [14:17] What is the Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care? [16:10] Starting the process of researching long-term care options [21:35] Exploring hybrid long-term care options There are essentially three different variations of a hybrid long-term care policy. The first is to have a life insurance policy that has an added long-term care rider. It works just like a normal life insurance policy that pays out in the event of your death. Except with the rider, it allows you to pay down your death benefit, dollar for dollar, to cover the costs of long-term care needs while you're still alive. It's a great way to add flexibility to a life insurance policy at a relatively low additional cost.  Another type of hybrid long-term care is what's known as a linked benefit product. It's a similar concept to the life insurance policy with a long-term care rider except that it accounts for inflation. Adding a long-term care rider to a life insurance policy will not increase the amount paid out based on the cost of care, making it more of an insurance product with added benefits and flexibility. The linked benefit is more like a long-term care product that has a smaller death benefit. A big advantage to this plan is if you never have a long-term care need, the majority of your premium will be returned to your estate through the death benefit. Digging deeper The final type of hybrid long-term care combines an annuity with a long-term care plan. Annuities are long-term investments issued by an insurance company designed to help protect you from outliving your income. They typically provide a guaranteed stream of payments over a predetermined amount of time. When combined with a long-term care plan, these annuity payments increase to cover the cost of a long-term care need.  When it comes to hybrid long-term care plans, the biggest benefit is flexibility. Plan beneficiaries can choose how to receive their benefits depending on the plans they select. A plan that pays through reimbursement works much like insurance. Benefits are paid out by submitting proof of long-term care services rendered. Indemnity (or cash) plans pay out a certain amount of money based on a daily or monthly limit. The major upside to this is that this money is paid out regardless of the actual cost of care so you could potentially receive more than you need. However, because the money can be used for anything, a potential downside is someone mismanaging the money. Listen to this episode for more information on long-term care plans! If you're concerned about paying for long-term care in retirement or are wondering the best way to pay for it, this episode is for you! This week, I'm joined by Nancy Simm of Highland Capital Brokerage to discuss retirement longevity, the types and costs of long-term care, and the best ways to pay for them. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Getting to know Nancy Simm [1:13] The five ways to pay for your long-term care in retirement [1:58] What is long-term care? [2:54] Identifying the costs of long-term care [5:42] Diving into traditional long-term care products and policies [7:58] How do I apply for long-term care and when is the best time to do so? [14:25] What is an elimination period and shared benefits? [19:24] Final thoughts on traditional long-term care plans [22:32] Understanding long-term care Most people assume that long-term care is for people in their 90s with health issues. However, long-term care plans can be used at any age for several reasons including early-onset degenerative diseases, strokes, and injuries due to accidents. The reason is irrelevant as long as there is a long-term care need that inhibits the activities of daily living. Nancy defines these activities as bathing, eating, dressing, bathroom use, continence, and transfer. Difficulties in these areas don't have to be permanent. As long as care will be needed for at least 90 days, it is considered long-term. For example, a bone fracture that takes a month or two to heal would not be considered a long-term care situation even if it prevents you from completing the activities of daily living. Long-term care plans focus on care needs longer than 90 days, but they go beyond physical disabilities. Diseases like Alzheimer's are another reason to look into long-term care because while patients may be physically capable of completing tasks, their reduced cognitive ability makes them a qualified candidate. Covering the cost Before deciding whether to pursue a long-term care insurance policy, it's important to understand the out-of-pocket costs of long-term care. The Connecticut and New England areas have some of the highest long-term care costs in the country. Average home health care costs are between $5000 and $6000 per month for a few hours of care per day. While most retirees prefer to receive long-term care at home, sometimes that isn't possible when the patient's safety is in question. Nursing home costs can average around $15,000 per month for full-time care. A huge benefit of long-term care insurance policies, aside from saving your bank account, is that they cover any kind of care required and are no longer limited to a specific care type, whether in-home or at a facility. Another cost-saving option is to retire in another state where long-term care costs are cheaper. If you live in Connecticut now but are debating retiring elsewhere, this may be the detail that gets you to reserve the moving truck. Midwestern states and most of Florida cut Connecticut's long-term care costs in half! Moving may be the best option for those looking to cut costs who aren't tied down to their current area. For more info on long-term care plans and how to pay for them, listen to this episode! Connect With Morrissey Wealth Management  www.MorrisseyWealthManagement.com/contact

We hear Lukas Pairon interview co-founder and director Gilles Delebarre (03:11->18:38) as well as research coordinator Indiana Wollman (18:40->31:06). The Philharmonie de Paris and its social music programme DEMOS will be hosting the 6th international SIMM-posium on 2nd and 3rd November 2021.  The programme of this year's SIMM-posium will soon be published on the websites of SIMM, the Philharmonie de Paris and our partner the Fondation Royaumont.DEMOS is in its 11th year. It offers young children instruments and music lessons for free. Launched by the Philharmonie de Paris in 2010, DEMOS has spread all over France and French territories, now involving more than 6000 kids. More and more fine musicians are interested to involve themselves in educational and social work. Also at the Philharmonie de Paris. At first the aim of DEMOS was to make classical music accessible to children who would not otherwise have come in touch with it. DEMOS is aimed at children from 8 to 12 years old. They get about 4 hours music training a week. During their 3 years of training, the kids are always experiencing music in group situations. These music programmes are proposed to kids who live in lower income neighbourhoods. But these neighbourhoods are socially mixed. For DEMOS the composition of the groups is of great importance: they make sure the groups are socially mixed. Some kids may have social and financial challenges, while others have fewer difficulties. The aim is to enhance the ability to look at others positively. The short music extracts you will hear during this episode were recorded of different DEMOS-orchestras during their end of season concerts last month at the Philharmonie de Paris.Referenced during this podcast-episode: DEMOS, DEMOS publications, Fondation Royaumont, Philharmonie de Paris, Mariusz Radwanskicontact: info@simm-platform.eu / www.simm-platform.eu

The subject was also discussed during two sessions of the 5th SIMM-posium we organised with the Brussels-based Bozar (sessions of 19.01.21 and  23.02.21 - recordings can be found here).  And this year's 3rd SIMM-seminar at the Royaumont Foundation (30.10-01.11.21) as well as the 6th SIMM-posium at the Philharmonie de Paris (3-4.11.21) will also very much focus on this topic. Referenced during this podcast-episode are: Aix-en-Provence Festival training for outreach skills, Casa da Musica Porto, Ethno Flanders, Equinox, Laurent Gaudé, IN/OUT Escape through Art, Jazz&mo', Bart Maris, Collectif La Meute, Musicae Scientiae special SIMM issue, The Ostend Street Orchestra, Claire Pasquier, Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Mariusz Radwanski, Université Lille (Master Art & Social Responsibility), Mark Witherscontact: info@simm-platform.eu / www.simm-platform.eu

In this 8th SIMM-podcast episode we hear Lukas Pairon interview 3 scholars from the Southern hemisphere: Juan Sebastian Rojas (01:31->14:27) and Natalia Puerta Gordillo (14:28->23:33) from Colombia, and Tinashe Mutero (23:35->32:12) from Zimbabwe. They discuss about research on social and community music projects in the Global South, research developed by local scholars as well as by researchers from the Global North. All three scholars attended one of the 4-day SIMM-seminars organised to allow small groups of scholars to share their research experiences and methodologies, and thereby developing an international research network in this field. Hearing them makes one wonder whether we shouldn't stop thinking of our world as composed of only 2 blocks (North and South), and instead let ourselves inspired by Arturo Escobar's recent presentation of our world as multiversal, composed of a multiversity of realities and perspectives.Referenced during this podcast-episode: Geoffrey Baker, Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, Children Performing Arts Workshop (CHIPAWO), Dzikwa Trust (Zimbabwe), Arturo Escobar, Orlando Fals Borda, Paulo Freire, Guildhall School of Music, Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts (IYASA), international comparative SIMM study, Mariusz Radwanski, Music Crossroads Zimbabwe, Red Musica Medellin, SEMPRE, 5th SIMM-posium, Sistema Global, Gloria Patricia Zapata Restrepocontact: info@simm-platform.eu / www.simm-platform.eu

In this 7th SIMM-podcast episode we hear Lukas Pairon discuss with Maria Majno from Italy (00:42->15:58) and Gillian Howell from Australia (16:01->31:30) about the practice of - and research on - social and community music projects in the Global South. This is one of several podcast episodes introducing a major theme during the ongoing 5th annual SIMM-posium. The 5th SIMM-posium is presenting research in the field of music in social and community work by scholars from all over the world. It was planned to take place in December 2020 at the Brussels based centre for the arts BOZAR, but because of the covid-pandemic it was reformatted as a series of 9 weekly online sessions on Tuesdays, from January 12th on until March 9th 2021.
