Ever been in a 50 lane traffic jam? How about stuck in your car for 5 days? No? That must make you proud to be an American. Or anything but someone from Hong Kong, really. Maybe you're a little less proud lately what with all the smoke in the air, but at least we live in the future where we have personal air purifiers. Our guest today is James Lamdin, co-founder of Analog Shift. After careers in outdoor equipment and cars, James started vintage dealer Analog Shift in 2012. A long-time watch collector, James turned his passion for vintage watches into a new resource for collectors and enthusiasts. You might know Analog Shift for its detailed watch descriptions, often with a bit of character, and perhaps you've even been lucky enough to visit its New York City showroom, a standby for local vintage watch lovers. In addition to Analog Shift, James is also the co-founder of the RedBar community. In 2020, Analog Shift was acquired by the retailer Watches of Switzerland. But Analog Shift has kept its character since then. Today, James is VP of vintage and pre-owned with Watches of Switzerland. When he's not talking vintage watches, he's drinking whisky, driving his vintage Porsche, and generally cosplaying as Magnum PI.James Stacey joins Mr. Lamdin and me to talk Doxa (of course), how the watch industry has evolved since Lamdin founded Analog Shift, neo-vintage watches, and his company's acquisition by Watches of Switzerland. We're also discussing Spencer Sunshine's delivery of receipts concerning Boyd Rice's participation in neo-nazism.

Come with Mad Mumzie as she goes for a mine dust lung disease check up, including chest Xray. What is involved? What did she do wrong along the way, and what you need to know for your check-ups. Why have one? Mine dust lung diseases (MDLD) are occupational lung disorders that result from prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable dust. MDLD can take a decade or longer to develop and may not show any symptoms for a long time. Therefore, early detection and prevention are very important. It was during Covid in December of 2020 when we first checked in via Zoom with Josh Grubbs at Black Lung Brewing. Since then he has opened his primary brewery and taproom in Round Lake Beach, and has expanded to a satellite taproom in Fox Lake beside beautiful Lake Nippersink. After our short recording hiatus, we wanted to restart our podcast episodes with a success story. We find out more on their first 3 years, how their brews have been refined, and hear lots of stories about the brewery and beer names. Guest co-host is ex-landlord John Karwoski, and BLB assistant brewer/metal band member Rob Noon is on hand as well. We recommend a visit if you haven't done so yet! CHEERS!
Black lung disease is back. In fact, it never went away. Now, younger and younger miners are living with a particularly nasty form of black lung disease. Regulators and the coal industry have known about the problem for decades — but they've been slow to respond. One reporter asks, “What would happen if thousands of workers in any other industry got sick and died just because of where they worked?” This week, we're talking about the black lung epidemic, Inside Appalachia.
On this West Virginia Morning, fewer coal miners are killed on the job than in years past, but black lung remains a persistent problem. A big reason for that is silica dust. Please be patient at the start as we had a couple of drop outs during the recording but it all resolves very quickly. David Thrussell is a composer, musician, performer, writer, film maker, lecturer. researcher & all-round sweet family man that's looks & lives like a hillbilly. He headlines the bands Snog & Black Lung. His OMNI Recording company specialises in rare lost recording of which “The Ballad of J.F.K “A musical history of the John F Kennedy assassination (1963-68) is just one of many releases. Yet a very special one indeed. On this the 60th anniversary year of the murder of J.F.K, Jay Katz & Aspasia thought it most important to discuss with David the reasons behind constructing this incredible compilation album & his astounding research literally at ground zero (many times musically) into this continuing mystery. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4602609/advertisement

Fratello On Air returns and while we planned to discuss yacht timers, we never got there! It's a fun episode where we discuss Andrew Grima Omega watches, Doxa, the new Tudor FXD, and the SwatchPain. We got a bit carried on some of the subjects, but we think you'll enjoy our talks about some interesting brands and details. Enjoy and, yes, we will come back to regatta watches soon! Before recording today's episode, we were a bit concerned about having a good topic for the show. Well, we needn't have worried because we actually had to cut ourselves off after more than an hour! It's a great show where talk about the Andrew Grima era at Omega and our continuing love for the Doxa 300 limited editions from back in 2017. Then, we move on to the new black Tudor FXD and the rest of the brand's lineup. Finally, we end the show with a bit more on the SwatchPain.Kettle KiteBefore getting into the Kettle Kite, Mike discusses a recent visit to a Time4APint get-together in London. Once again, the watches that made their way to the event were fantastic and surprising. Mike mentioned a Longines 30ch, the Vernal Pulsations, and more. The watch that really surprised him, however, was an Omega DeVille that was inspired by Andrew Grima designs. The watch was originally part of the Time in Style series from the early '70s and it was a stunning throwback. We discuss Andrew Grima and reference a great article that shows some of the history of this influential English designer. At the event, Mike wore his Doxa 300 Black Lung and remarked how it was a big hit. It shows how well these limited models have stood the test of time.As far as wristwear, Balazs is sporting his lovely Eterna 852 Jumbo. It's a watch with a neat inscription on the case back related to a Swiss steel firm. Mike then moves on to a watch that sets up the main topic on the Tudor FXD. He's wearing his Tudor Heritage Chrono from 2010 and he recalls the scene when this watch was first released.Tudor FXD and more SwatchPainNext, we discuss the new Tudor FXD and our thoughts on the watch. We like it, but neither of us is convinced that we could live with the fixed lugs on a daily basis. It then prompts a discussion on Tudor overall and what we'd choose from their current lineup if we had to walk away with one model. Finally, we return to the SwatchPain. We hadn't realized that three models have a date while the remaining two do not. Plus, Balazs is considering buying one and putting it through its paces for a month without switching out for another watch. We hope you enjoyed today's episode. As always, please let us know if you have an idea for a future show.
Rev. George Mills Dickerson of Tazewell, Virginia was born in the years after slavery ended. He's remembered today through his poetry. And a new wave of black lung disease is ravaging Appalachia. We'll hear more from a black lung town hall in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Coal miners have their own thoughts about black lung, too.
On this West Virginia Morning, a free health fair Tuesday offered the community of Oak Hill the opportunity to be tested for respiratory problems and black lung disease. Coal mining might seem like a job of the past, but global demand for it has actually surged in the past few years. Nearly 7,000 coal miners are still working in the industry. But the job is killing them. Inhalation of coal dust particles is leading to black lung, an incurable condition that workers describe as drowning in their own lung fluid. Worse yet, Canada doesn't have a tracking system, which makes compensation difficult for many miners.Decades after coal fuelled Canada, miners are now being left behind. Greg Mercer, investigative reporter for The Globe, spoke to the workers fighting to have their labour remembered – and to protect future generations.Questions? Comments? Ideas? Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. This week, we each discuss our idea of the ideal three-watch collection. Then, we offer up three more at a more approachable level. Enjoy the show and let us know your thoughts.Yes, the three-watch collection is a popular topic. This time, it's our turn and we each offer a trio without any cost constraints. Then, Balazs and I come back around and do it again with more thoughts on our wallets. We have some similar picks, but also some very different choices.Handgelenks KontrolleAfter some talk about watches we've seen during travel, it's time to get into the Handgelenks Kontrolle. Balazs is wearing his Excelsior Park and enjoying the use of the EP40 movement. Mike is wearing his recent travel watch, the Doxa SUB 300 "Black Lung." Both declare it as a modern classic.Three-Watch CollectionNext, it's time to focus on the three-watch collection. We have some real fun with this one. There's some real variety here!Balazs kicks things off with the Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.022 Transitional. It has all the trappings of a 321, but with the more reliable caliber 861. For an affordable alternative, he brings in the Seiko 6139-7070. This watch has one of the first automatic chronograph movements and can be had for roughly €1,000. Mike leads off with the current Speedmaster Professional, a €7,400 gem with a perfect bracelet. For an alternative, it's another manual wind chronograph known as the Hamilton Intra-Matic H. This 40mm beauty is available for €2,195 in a couple of different dial colors. For the second round of the three-watch collection, Balazs starts with the Rolex Submariner 14060. He follows this up with the Yema Superman Heritage Special Edition, an affordable vintage-inspired alternative. Mike brings his all-time favorite watch, the Rolex Explorer 14270. His option watch is surprising because it's the Doxa SUB 300 Sharkhunter, a real beauty that can do just about everything. For our final spin, Balazs leads off with the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196G, a discontinued beauty of a dress watch. While it's less expensive, the vintage Omega 2505 "Jumbo" is no less attractive. Mike finishes his with yet another Patek, the sublime Calatrava 570. Despite its simple looks, there's nothing basic about this watch. Finally, the more approachable icon is the Grand Seiko 4420-9000. Like the Patek, this watch also boasts a case that is best kept away from the polishing wheel. What is your favorite three-watch collection? As always, thank you for listening. Feel free to let us know if you have some ideas for an upcoming episode.
