Phantom loads, also called standby power, is the electricity used by appliances even when they are turned off. Reuben talks about the experiment he did at home with the Sense Home Energy Monitor. He shares using Kill A Watt meter, a device that measures the power consumed by an appliance. He then discusses the results and computed the monetary cost for the phantom load. Tessa mentions that the age of appliances is a factor in electricity consumption. Reuben enumerates the expensive appliances that may consume a lot of electricity in his home.Catch Reuben's blogpost at structuretech.com.
We're talking about VAMPIRES on this week's show — vampire electric loads. It's Halloween season, and these little energy suckers are insidious. I guarantee that you have dozens of little devices plugged into your home that are using a small amount of standby power, sucking energy all day and night. It really adds up, and causes nightmares for energy geeks like me. Research shows that these “plug loads” are about 1/3 of a home's total energy consumption. We're not talking about big appliances or lighting – but sneaky little things plugged in or wired in all around your home. Think about what you have. Obvious vampire loads are devices sitting out in plain site like computers, routers, Wi-Fi repeaters, phone chargers, TVs, cable boxes, cable modems, entertainment consoles and appliances (anything with a clock and an illuminated LED). Less obvious vampires are things like security systems, motion detectors, lighting control systems and integrated audio systems. The really sneaky devices that you might not see include doorbell and thermostat transformers, WiFi thermostats, hot water and furnace ignitors, garage door openers, irrigation systems, outdoor lighting control systems, and pool timers. To get a handle on this infestation, I went to every room with a Kill-A-Watt meter to measure the power consumption of each device. It added up to over 250 watts of 24×7 power — over $750 per year at an average rate of $0.35/kwh. To learn more about these vampire electric loads — how to identify them, calculate their costs, and drive a stake through their heart — tune in to this week's Energy Show.

TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ VSK Francesco Visconti, better known as VSK, is an Italian techno dj and producer, born in Rome in 1986 and based in Berlin. Since his earliest youth he has had a huge passion for electronic music, and through hanging out at the famous record store from the Capital “Remix”, he was introduced to the world of djing when he wa only 16 years old. He has got familiar to different forms of techno, his style ranging from a sound usually very hard and dark, often with industrial influences, to a very different one, deeper and more mental, both still easily recognizable as coming from the same mind. At the same time he met the artist Ken Karter, who introduced him to the world of production and mastering. He began an education as an audio-engineer and sound-designer, in music and especially in television, working in different recording studios; currently he does this alongside his artistic career. In 2010 he and his friends Conrad Van Orton and Vilix started their own label “Consumer Recreation Service”, which got immediate support from big names in the international techno scene, currently he has been handling “CRS ltd” series, focused on a darker and more industrial sound. Over the years he has released music on many other important labels such as Ear To Ground, Sonntag Morgen,Genesa, Planet Rhythm, on which he has an important collaboration with the Italian icon Giorgio Gigli, “Silent Age Ep”. In 2016 he also signed an extended six-track Ep with Conrad Van Orton on Developer’s imprint Modularz ( USA) and in 2018 on historical Soma Records under the name of “Symmetrical Behaviuor”. In 2017 he started performing live, both individually and as part of a duo with the Serbian artist Scalameriya. This collaboration brought to several relevant releases on the British labels Power Vacuum and the legendary Perc Trax, as well as leading to their appearance in the MORD box 002. At the same time he took part in the latest VA on the amazing “47” label along with Ancient Methods, OAKE and the label owner Tommy Four Seven. He also signed 47's third solo Ep, following those by Headless Horseman and Killawatt. Matt, in art Killawatt, is a longstanding producer and DJ, who has an eclectic portfolio of releases and music. He started getting into old school breaks several years before eventually embracing techno as well, landing on a signature style that makes his music unique. Killawatt approaches music-making with an open mind in order to keep creativity as a priority. His consistent release schedule has seen him appearing on labels such as Osiris and 47 quite often and he will soon release on his own imprint as well. In this chat, we get into his musical roots from the old school parties he used to go to, his take on life and keeping a balance with other jobs outside of music. We also talk about how living away from big cities allows you to look at things differently. We also get a glimpse of his future plans to take up an engineering degree, because he feels the need to contribute to society in more ways than only through his music. As a prolific and well-appreciated producer of a niche genre, Matt also reminds us that without getting your music out there, there is no way people can hear (let alone like) what we create. -- Killawatt Links https://open.spotify.com/artist/0WaR9ydw7sZikp1dfHV8Xc https://soundcloud.com/killawatt_uk https://www.instagram.com/killawatt_ https://www.facebook.com/KillawattMusic/ . Andrea Greco, artist name Burden, is an Italian born, London based DJ and producer. Over the years his sound has emerged as increasingly dark and industrial; energised with driving basslines, shadowy atmosphere, and hypnotic leads. Burden’s DJ career was born in Rome in 2011, when he had the chance to play alongside internationally renowned techno artists like Len Faki and Shifted. In 2013 Burden moved to London. His masters degree in Sound Engineering at SAE Institute, the experiences this new city offered, and his fascination with its underground scene, helped sculpt his signature, albeit versatile, sound. Burden was soon contributing to the rave scene playing parties such as Aria, Superstition, Corner, HTBX, Dazed and Confused, 000011010 Collective, Wachtraum… As well as renowned warehouses and clubs such as Fold, Bloc, Electrowerks, The Cause, 93 Feed East, and Egg. Currently, Burden is one of the resident DJs of ARIA; a collective of likeminded techno lovers that have allowed him to perform in underground venues, and alongside names like Blawan and Electric Indigo. At the beginning of 2018, together with DLTN and a group of friends, Burden started his record label ‘Aurea Records’, where he continues to release his music and collaborate with artists such as Uun, Stanislav Tolkachev, Ness, Arnaud Le Texier, Tapefeed, End Train and Flaminia. Burden’s productions are played and supported by Tommy Four Seven, Ben Klock, Cleric, Paula Temple, Ancient Methods, Killawatt and many others. The surf’s up for this episode of Teaching Change! In this two-parter, the hosts talk chasing waves and sustainability with Chris Castro, the Director of Sustainability for the City of Orlando. Chris’ love of nature started at an early age in Miami, FL where he worked on his stepfather’s palm tree farm. His extracurricular activities included snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing–which was a major reason why he chose to attend the University of Central Florida (UCF) as an undergraduate. Orlando’s location gave Chris easy access to Florida’s exciting beaches and waterways.Chris may have come for the surfing but he quickly found himself at home among Orlando’s emerging innovation and technology scene. Within these budding platforms, Chris saw the potential for initiatives involving sustainability. Chris’ path to his current advocacy and life’s work is a testament to the power of higher education and the personal development it affords. When asked about his interest in sustainability, Chris recalls the course in Environmental Sociology he took as a student at UCF. He credits this class by opening his eyes on how humans impact the world and each other with actions such as energy consumption and waste. These revelations sparked his interest in sustainability activism and in solutions to issues that plague the environment. That’s when Chris went mobile. He rallied his peers together and formed IDEAS for Us, which began in 2008 as a UCF interdisciplinary organization of students working on policy and solutions to make college campuses more sustainable. Now IDEAS for Us has chapters all over the world, including one at Valencia College. The focus of IDEAS for Us revolves around energy, water, food, waste, and ecology. Two initiatives spearheaded by IDEAS for Us include Kill-A-Watt and Green Your Game. For Kill-A-Watt, students living in dorms compete to conserve energy and save money to win scholarships. Green Your Game promotes recycling, reducing, and reusing efforts at UCF’s tailgating events. The conversation then turns to Chris’ work as an urban farmer and the importance of creating a sustainable agricultural system. Chris shares that food currently travels an average of 1500-1800 miles before it reaches a person’s plate. To address this issue, Chris co-created the Fleet Farming program that converts lawns and underused land into farms. Fleet Farming is made possible through Swarm Rides which consist of volunteers on bikes collecting the city-grown produce. The produce is then sold at farmers markets and to local vendors.Chris wears many hats in addition to his day job. This episode just scratches the surface. Be sure to check back next week to hear the conclusion of Chris Castro’s interview.Chris Castro’s Biography(Per LinkedIn)An award-winning sustainability professional, eco-entrepreneur, urban farmer, and community organizer working to accelerate the transition to a smart, resilient, and sustainable future.Chris is currently the Director of Sustainability, Senior Advisor to Mayor Dyer, and Co-chair of Smart Cities for the City of Orlando, developing partnerships, policies, and programs to support the sustainability, clean energy, & climate-related goals of Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Green Works Orlando initiative. In 2008, Chris co-founded IDEAS For Us, a global 501c3 non-profit & UN-accredited NGO, working to incubate global environmental solutions and fund local action that advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2013, he helped co-create Fleet Farming, a renowned urban farming program that is refining local food by building distributed organic agricultural systems through neighborhoods and communities.Chris has held sustainability & energy-related positions with University of Central Florida, Orange County Government, and the US Department of Energy. In 2012, Chris also co-founded a clean energy consulting firm, Citizen Energy, that provides custom energy efficiency & renewable energy solutions for commercial buildings in the Washington DC Metro area.In addition, Chris is a public speaker and has been recognized for his effort as an emerging environmental leader; including the ‘Guru of Green’ by the Orlando Business Journal, the 2017 Grist 50 Award, Top 30 Under 30 sustainability professionals by GreenBiz, formal recognition from President Bill Clinton, and a ‘Champions of Change’ awardee from the U.S. White House & Obama Administration. Chris has spoken at more than 100 conferences and events, including the United Nations HQ & the UN Rio+20 Summit, NASA Kennedy Space Center Innovation Expo, TEDx Orlando, Better Buildings Summit, and more. The camp offers practical instruction and hands-on experiments in the areas of energy transfer/conservation along with wind, solar, fuel cell and biomass technologies. Engineers from Progress Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas guest speak and discuss energy topics such as conservation, political and social impacts, and careers in energy production. For each topic, teams build a model of an energy generation/consumption machine and use their finished product to compete with the other teams. There are four competitions during the week; energy transfer, wind, solar, and fuel cells. For example, students build windmills and the power from a given amount of air flow wins the competition.
