Peter Adarkwah is the founder of the legendary London label BBE Music. The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales. A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks. A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am‘s first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players. A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Moralesamong many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles. The label's recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari' in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz' Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of ‘Barely Breaking Even‘, featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega. www.bbemusic.com https://www.instagram.com/bbeafrica/ https://bbemusic.bandcamp.com/ Recorded on March 8, 2024 in NYC. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dancetothemusic/support

This week's Resident Advisor Exchange was recorded in January, live from Southbank Centre in London. Shortly before their Royal Festival Hall performance with The Outlook Orchestra, drum & bass and jungle originators Fabio & Grooverider sat down with Heléna Star to talk about the show. As you can hear from the applause and roars of laughter throughout the recording, the audience was besotted. The UK dance music scene would look very different without Fabio & Grooverider's contributions over the last few decades. Coming from pirate radio, where they first teamed up in 1987 on Phase One, the duo would go on to carve out the path for drum & bass and jungle, as well as to influence the trajectories of house, techno and breakbeat. Grooverider captures their legacy best when he says: "We are this music." Launched in 2017, The Outlook Orchestra has collaborated with other pioneering artists like David Rodigan and Mala. The show with Fabio & Grooverider, which they will perform again at Outlook Festival in June, saw 30 years of drum & bass history packed into 31 tracks. In conversation with Heléna Star, Fabio & Grooverider discussed how the show came together, as well as their staying power in the scene, the legacy of their seminal club night Rage, how drum & bass is still growing and how humour is a vital part of their relationship. Fittingly, they also cracked a lot of jokes.

Leicester Curve’s recent award-winning revival of the musical The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker’s novel, has been reimagined, filmed and is being streamed for audiences. Dreda Say Mitchell and David Benedict review. David Rodigan joins us to celebrate the life of the great Jamaican musician U-Roy, who died recently. He was a master of the toasting mic style – the precursor of rapping, MC-ing and freestyling. Niven Govinden studied film before becoming an award-winning writer. In his sixth novel Diary of a Film his cinematic knowledge is filtered through the lens of creative anxiety, queer desire, and European city walking. In it, an auteur and his lead actors arrive at a prestigious film festival to premiere his latest film. Alone one morning at a backstreet cafe, he strikes up a conversation with a local woman who takes him on a walk to uncover the city's secrets, historic and personal. A story of love and tragedy emerges, and he begins to see the chance meeting as fate. Every year the Arts Foundation makes awards of £10,000 to assist artists with living and working costs - helping them to carry on creating. All five of the 2021 winners are talking about their work on Front Row. The fourth is John Barber, Arts Foundation Fellow for Choral Composition. He tells John Wilson about the range of his music making, from a retelling of the Persephone myth for 1500 voices, 10 years running Woven Gold, a choir made up of refugees and asylum seekers and professional musicians, to pieces for small choirs such at The Sixteen. So much choral music is rooted in religious texts and liturgy. But Barber is not religious and he explains his concern with composing music for voices from a secular perspective. We had the pleasure of interviewing Sevana over Zoom video! Born Anna-Sharé Blake in Jamaica’s parish of Westmoreland, Sevana coined her name after Savannah-La-Mar, the picturesque coastal town where she grew up. Her musical awakening began at eight years old over a hearty Sunday morning breakfast, when she broke out in an impromptu rendition of Celine Dion’s “A New Day” for her family. She has come a long way since this epiphany at such an early age to now fulfilling her passions to the fullest. The 28-year-old singer, who is also an actress and model, is a quintessential triple threat of talent. Her burgeoning abilities are now backed by reggae star Protoje’s management and label company In.Digg.Nation Collective. Sevana recently signed with Six Course/RCA Records as part of In.Digg.Nation’s partnership to release her major label debut. Hailing from Jamaica gives any artist a certain legitimacy, but it also brings certain expectations — ones which Sevana lives up to and exceeds. While reflecting the island’s musical sensibilities in some ways, her vocals are strongly influenced by modern R&B, evoking such soul queens as Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan and Adele.Although Sevana got her musical break in 2008 with the girl group SLR, placing third place on Digicel Rising Stars (Jamaica’s equivalent of American Idol), it was not until years later that her career came into focus. In 2014, she impacted the chorus of  “Sudden Flight” from Protoje’s album Ancient Future. She made regular live appearances alongside Protoje and his band Indiggnation. Instantly comfortable, confident and engaging in live performances, she flourished on stage. In July 2015, she joined the Ancient Future Tour across Europe where she got her first taste of life on the road. Her 2016 self-titled EP was a six-song project that shared honest stories from her childhood, feelings of love and thoughts of letting go. Sevana’s first European solo tour followed. Two years later the singer delivered her infectious anthem “Sometime Love.” The single received heavy rotation in Jamaica and the U.K. (featured as BBC 1Xtra’s Mista Jam’s “Jam Hot” Record of the Week). Sevana has also recorded live sessions for BBC in Jamaica with David Rodigan. In Summer 2019, she dropped her upbeat dancehall-flavored jam “Nobody Man” (released via Easy Star Records/In.Digg.Nation Collective), which showcased her “stunning vocal range” (COMPLEX). Later in the fall, she joined a cast of Jamaica’s leading singers – including Jaz Elise, Lila Iké, and Naomi Cowan – on the all-female riddim compilation Rock & Groove. Sevana’s contribution “Haul and Pull” was selected as the Coldest Record for BBC Radio 1 with Toddla T.Over the past year, Sevana landed festival performances at Boomtown (UK), Reggae Geel (Germany) and Rototom Sunsplash (Spain), Sole DXB (Dubai) and joined Protoje on some of his major shows, including BRIC’s Celebrate Brooklyn! NYC concert and Jamaica’s largest annual music festival Reggae Sumfest. Sevana has earned notoriety by The FADER, NYLON, COMPLEX, VICE/Noisey, BBC (1Xtra), LargeUp and graced the cover of RIDDIM Magazine's SPRING 2019 issue. In addition to her singing career, she played the starring role in the groundbreaking Jamaican web series, Losing Patience, which aired on the country’s most popular TV network TVJ. Her photogenic, naturally radiant look has made her a favorite of photographers and fashion labels. Most recently, she was included in PUMA Middle East’s 2020 campaign along with labelmate Lila Iké.Be Somebody, Sevana’s 2020 EP is the next chapter in her song book. This latest release consists of all-new tracks that peel off Sevana’s layers in a metamorphosis of self, reflecting on personal growth, love and relationships. The EP’s title track “Be Somebody” sets an aspirational tone of Sevana becoming an individual and reaching one’s full potential despite overwhelming feelings of doubt amidst the pressures of the world. “Let me be greater than this,” Sevana wails with intensity. One of the album’s crown jewels is “Set Me On Fire,” produced by Protoje, J.L.L. and Paris Lamont Dennis II. It is a tale of revenge in a relationship where she turns her tragedy into triumph. On the more flirtatious track “Mango” produced by J.L.L., Sevana has space to flow in her sultry Jamaican accent over a minimal backdrop of airy synths and tickling guitar notes. Sevana’s benediction of how far her love and loyalty would travel on the EP’s first single “If You Only Knew” is even more contagious sung in her falsetto. Kelsey Gonzalez, producer and guitarist for Anderson .Paak’s Free Nationals band is at the helm of this track.Sevana’s Be Somebody EP captures her quest to self discovery, complimented with minimally eloquent stripped-down production that gives room for her soaring vocals and emotive lyrics to take center stage.“For the EP, I wanted to add songs that covered various thoughts and my beliefs. I took the bars off my mind. I did not want to compromise sonically, so I  just wrote, in an honest way, honoring the melodies as they came out of me. I wanted to take the listener on a meaningful journey and I think I did that,” Sevana says about her latest body of work.We want to hear from you! Good Vibrations Podcast

When corporate and control-system meddling and subversion has been present in every other popular music genre, why would anyone reasonably expect things to have been any different in Reggae - a music and culture which has captivated many millions of fans and followers all over the world? Here to discuss the various manipulations is the New York-based author, lecturer and black cultural studies scholar R.A Ptahsen, more commonly known as Rodney Shabazz. He offers a masterclass overview of how Reggae music evolved out the earlier Ska and Rocksteady styles, (and before that, Mento music,) and how all remain rooted in African cultural traditions. We also discuss how Reggae represents a culture and a lifestyle beyond the music, intrinsically linked to the Rastafari religion and the deification of the long-time Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie, and the ceremonial smoking of marijuana.Dr. Shabazz casts a critical eye over the emergence of the Reggae sub-genre known as Dancehall which appeared in the 1980s, its lyrics rooted in vulgarity, and which largely replaced conscious message-music as the pre-dominant expression of the music. This occurred soon after the untimely deaths of Bob Marley and Inner Circle’s Jacob Miller, with Peter Tosh’s demise following a few years later, and Dr. Shabazz raises suspicions about three of the most politically active of Jamaica’s musicians all meeting early ends. We re-visit aspects of Bob Marley’s terminal cancer. Also coming under scrutiny are Chris Blackwell, founder of the hugely influential Island Records, and David Rodigan, the immensely popular British Reggae DJ. With both coming from white, privileged backgrounds and military links, is there more to know about how they achieved their respective prominent positions than first meets the eye?The Harvard Business School report into manipulating the black music scene of the early 1970s, as commissioned by Columbia Records Group and referenced in the interview, is discussed in this article:https://www.popmatters.com/050603-randb-2496103718.html

Some say "the Devil has all the best tunes". So how is it a Roman Catholic nun was the founding force behind a brass band that helped shape some the world's most beloved musical forms and generations of Reggae superstars? Take it easy, sit back, and allow yourself twenty minutes to get a mere taste of the remarkable story that is the 'Alpha Boys' School: Cradle of Jamaican Music' by Heather Augustyn and Adam Reeves.Hear how a strict disciplinarian regime for 'wayward boys,’ many of whom were orphaned or from deeply troubled backgrounds and hailing from some of the toughest streets in the world, created the very foundations of Jamaican jazz, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dancehall and dub.I'm not sure Satan has ever run a bass-heavy sound system, spinning a collection of the hippest jazz, R’n’B and ska 45s, but Sister Mary Ignatius did, for an incredible 64 years, inspiring generations of young men to make music their occupation.Find out more now about the Godmother of Ska and Reggae and her proteges, as I begin by asking co-author of this amazing book, Adam Reeves: "How did you get into reggae?"The book features a foreword by world-renowned reggae DJ and broadcaster David Rodigan and stunning cover art by French oil painter Jean-Christophe Molineris. On sale now at skabook.com, amazon.com, or amazon.co.uk.The authors are available for press and further radio interviews: Heather Augustyn (USA): haugustyn@yahoo.com // Adam Reeves (UK): alkreeves@gmail.comTo hear a brand new mix of Alpha music by author Adam Reeves, go to:https://www.mixcloud.com/Rudereaktor/alpha-boys-school-cradle-of-jamaican-music-pt-1/

Welcome to the seventh episode of the Cosmic Soul Podcast. Taking you through with a diverse selection as always and talking about up and coming cosmic endeavours! (Feel Free to DL this podcast like always!) Cosmic Soul Collective are back and very proud to announce their 1st birthday celebration at Exchange, Old Market, Bristol. Celebrating the power of Art & Music, in experimentally organic forms, we present an evening of mesmerizingly deep live music. LINE UP: ASH WALKER EXPERIENCE (Bristol Debut) Describing his current sound as trip-hop with an abstract twist, Ash incorporates an intoxicatingly heavy dub reggae bottom end with samples of original material – all firmly rooted in jazz harmony. Ash has supported acts such as The Specials, Lee Scratch Perry, and David Rodigan, and now signed to Deep Heads, his productions are receiving the increased attention they deserve. Now performing live with a four piece band which has evolved the sets into an experience to remember. The band, Marc Cyril on Bass, Tim Shackman on Drums, Lord Laville on vocals and Ash Walker on Leads, Keys, Melodica, Vocals, Dub siren, tape delays and everything in between! We are very excited to have them bless the stage at Exchange, presenting an emotively powerful performance that will be truly special! AUXX https://soundcloud.com/auxxmusic Auxx is an experimental musician and sound designer based in Brighton, UK. His recent independent work has been supported by artists from the network of Ninja Tune, Warp and Brainfeeder; with remixes for Daedelus, Plaid and Kidkanevil of the Red Bull Music Academy. With a technical approach to his 2018 live show, his new unreleased work intertwines the ethereal chaos of a new dystopia, hinting at unique melodic soundscapes to bridge you into the unfamiliar. Charli Brix https://soundcloud.com/mangojuicemusic/jevon-ives-head-in-the-clouds Charli Brix is a London born musician, writer & aspiring producer. Floating between electronic and soul, her vocals are most recognisable weaved between moody rollers released on some of the most revered labels within drum and bass. Rooted firmly in r&b and soul, 2018 sees a more down tempo side of Charli’s productions; with the inception of her neo-soul collective ‘Milk & Honey’ & collaborations with some of Bristol’s finest r&b artists, it’s time to strip back to her roots delivering nothing but organic, soulful expression. Aaliyah Esprit Music Aaliyah Esprit is a singer who’s versed in soul-jazz legends as much as the hip-hop beatmakers who’ve flipped their records. Her music finds a sweet spot between those two worlds. Working with producers melding hard-edged production with a melodic hue, her vocals add a timeless, soulful quality. Based in Bristol, she’s part of the Cosmic Soul Collective, but has also picked up the attention of Brownswoods own, Giles Peterson who has signed her up for his Further Bubblers scheme. The future is looking bright for young Aaliyah. Indira May https://soundcloud.com/indie-may Keeping it organic and fresh, Indira is an upcoming singer/songwriter from Brighton. Having worked with Hip Hop artists such as Nomad and Eskimoe, expect Jazz influenced Rhythm & Blues with an experimental twist. Keep your eyes peeled for the launch of her EP and latest debut video in the next few months. Really excited to hear her unique voice and style + Support from... Akira Neroli / Jevon Ives / Mendaya / 2HONEYS / Åethereal The Night will be hosted D-Los Tickets will be £5 On the Door. We are also Launching the music event from Two's Company Studios in Old Market Bristol, just a few doors down from Exchange. Presenting you with an Art Exhibition to kick things of for the night! 2x World Clash winners King Turbo are musically armed, dangerous and dead set on a winning streak, as they ready to compete for a second time in "Sound Clash at Sea" -- the annual sound clash aboard the "Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise." Winning Irish and Chin's World Clash grants the Canadian sound a chance to compete in the popular "Sound Clash at Sea," where they will face off against Mighty Crown, Tony Matterhorn and David Rodigan.   King Turbo, featuring Slingshot and Ricky Turbo, edged out a fierce line up of contenders at World Clash with just the right music selections, hard hitting speeches and overall chemistry with the crowd. King Turbo's mix of attributes was the perfect recipe for victory, which they aim to repeat during the highly anticipated "Sound Clash at Sea" on Thursday, November 16 (the Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise sails November 13 - November 18, 2017). The Canadian sound certainly has the ability to win, as much to their credit, King Turbo is one of the very few sounds to hold 3 consecutive Irish and Chin clash titles, including Canada Rumble 2016, World Clash 2016 and World Clash 2017.

Born in Savona (Italy) from nigerian father and italian mother, this young artist is very close to his african roots. Reggae music is his heartbeat, from the childhood. Since he was a little boy he used to entertain his parents and friends singing Bob Marley songs.   His musical journey starts in 2002, when at the age of 15, he started developing his musical skills becoming singer and songwriter of the Italian Reggae band EAZY SKANKERS, founded with the bass player Andrea “Botta” Bottaro. The Band performed all around Italy in shows such as “Rototom Sunsplash” in 2005, “Arezzo Wave Love Festival” in 2006, “GoaBoa Festival” in 2007, and shared the stage with artistes like Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters, Sinhead O' Connor, Black Uhuru, Junior Kelly, David Rodigan, Bitty Mclean, Toots and the Maytals, Cocoa Tea, Turbulence, Gappy Ranks and the late “King of Ska” Desmond Dekker. Troy Stephen Born in KingstonJamaica, , his  love for music first manifested as a soloist in church. Stephen's foray into the realm of recorded music began with the single “Ruffer Than Ruff” recorded for the Telecom Label. The song was distributed by Dynamic Sounds and Stephen's performed under the stage name ‘Trojan'. As a singer/songwriter, Stephen consciously attempts to make each composition a soul-stirring message that uplifts and enlightens. This “message music” aspect of the artiste's repertoire is grounded in the drum and bass of roots reggae, though, his versatility allows him to create quality music for varied genres. The musical journey has led Stephen to establish his own Whirlwind Records Label on which he has recorded and released several singles. caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com

HELLO UNIVERSE! Another day, another podcast. Recently we were in London with Major Lazer, and Diplo took the opportunity to interview BBC presenter and sound system operator Sir David 'Ramjam' Rodigan. Many of you must be like 'WHO!?' but in reggae dancehall circles, this man is a living legend. You see, the reggae dancehall arena is ruled by selectors and sound systems, and the mighty David Rodigan has been holding his own for more than thirty years. To paraphrase, back in the 60s it was about 'records, football and girls' when he first started going down to Jamaica. With his onstage antics and captivating story telling, he is as much a staple of dancehall culture as the music he plays. And make no mistake, this isn't any bland marketing gimmick - the man full up ah CHUNE, and still can kill sound and buss dance. So widout further ado, we bring to you, from waaay out inna inglan, Daaavid Rodigaaan....

Bristol and bass music have been happy bedfellows for a long, long time, but in recent years a new wave of producers, promoters and DJs have been properly shaking up the city's clubs, pubs, bars and warehouses, throwing traditional dub, reggae and dancehall flavours into the hotpot alongside dubstep, grime, ragga, breakcore and jungle — crews such as P.R.A.N.K., Dissident, Heatwave and Hench, and events such as Subloaded, Dubloaded, Toxic Dancehall and Ruffnek Diskotek, to name a few. Dub Boy, aka Tim Rayner, is one of the driving forces behind Ruffnek Diskotek — a regular fixture about town that sticks doggedly to its mantra of supplying 'riddim and bass to wind up yuh waist', roping in many of the scene's biggest names and all the best local acts to ensure the job gets done properly. Tim's quite a selector, having played alongside luminaries ranging from David Rodigan and Digital Mystikz to Klute and Congo Natty. He recently sent over this brand new 38-track reggae and dancehall mix to Spannered, which we're sure you'll agree is an absolute stonker. ^ The next Ruffnek Discotek takes place at The Croft, Bristol on Friday 2 November, with guests including Benga (Big Apple), Rossi B and Toddla T.   Tracklisting:  Collie Buddz — Blind To You (Black Chiney) Anthony Cruz — Lose Dem Head (Juke Boxx) Tanya Stephens — Let It Go Girl (Juke Boxx) Lady Saw — Good Men(Juke Boxx) Fantan Mojah — Jah Time (Juke Boxx) Chuck Fender — Gash Dem (Juke Boxx) Perfect — One Life (Irie Ites) Sizzla – Show More Love (Irie Ites) Lutan Fyah — A Lie (Irie Ities) Fantan Mojah — So Many Problems In The World (Irie Ites) Turbulence & Spectacular — High Grade (Irie Ites) YT— No Sandweed (Sativa) Daville — Blaze The Chalice (Maximum Sound) Burro Banton — Man Guinep (Maximum Sound) Ward 21 —– Ain’t No Fun (Maximum Sound) Shaggy, Red Fox & Screechie Dan — Girls Like (Massive B) Collie Buddz — What Ive Been Searching For (Massive B) Ill Inspector — Come Fight We (Massive B) Chezidek — Me Nah Run (Massive B) Movado — Dying (Daseca) Junior Reid — Stop Dip The Youths Them (JR Productions) Singer Blue — If I Know Jah Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry — Blackboard Jungle Dub (Clocktower) Alborosie — Holy Mount Zion (Maximum Sound) Chezidek — ?
