On this week's DMZ, Bill Scher and Matt dive into the chaotic mess that is Donald Trump's second term. We discuss the following:— Trump's Iran War Escalation & Quagmire Risks — The U.S. military campaign has deepened into potential endless conflict, fears of Iran mining the Strait of Hormuz, spiking oil prices to extreme levels, asymmetric retaliation, and no clear exit strategy despite Trump's boasts of quick victory.— SAVE Act Push & Voter Restrictions — Trump fixates on passing the SAVE America Act (requiring strict ID like passports or birth certificates for voting, bundled with unrelated trans issues and other GOP priorities) despite slim chances in the Senate. We talk about how it could suppress turnout (ironically hurting low-propensity Republican voters more), and Senate Majority Leader John Thune's resistance to nuking the filibuster.— Signs of GOP Base Unrest & Policy Shifts — The Trump administration is backpedaling on aggressive “mass deportation” rhetoric (White House aides urging focus on “violent criminals”), coupled with the alienation of non-interventionist voices (Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogan, et al.) over Iran.— Midterm Outlook & Blue Wave Potential — With growing Democratic momentum, coupled with Trump's chaotic presidency, Matt is predicting a Senate flip for Dems.— The 2028 Succession Battle: J.D. Vance vs. Marco Rubio — There are emerging 2028 GOP primary tensions, with Vance (non-interventionist leanings, low-profile amid Iran) vs. Rubio (more prominent on foreign policy, aligned with strikes) leading the speculation. — And MUCH more!Subscribe to Matt Lewis on Substack: https://mattklewis.substack.com/Support Matt Lewis at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattlewisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattLewisDCTwitter: https://twitter.com/mattklewisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattlewisreels/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhSMpjOzydlnxm5TDcYn0A– Who is Matt Lewis? –Matt K. On this week's episode of The DMZ, The Washington Monthly's Bill Scher and Matt discuss:— Kristi Noem's dramatic ouster as DHS Secretary: chaotic mass deportations, deadly ICE mistakes, lavish taxpayer-funded ad campaign, disastrous House Judiciary hearing, and personal scandals — including the Corey Lewandowski rumors— Noem's replacement by Sen. Markwayne Mullin — and what it means for the deportation push— Escalating U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran: military execution vs. long-term risks, assassination of regime leaders, Trump's demands for unconditional surrender and picking Iran's next ruler, and parallels to past Middle East quagmires— Texas Senate race heating up: Will Donald Trump endorse incumbent Sen. John Cornyn over Ken Paxton? And could James Talarico beat Cornyn?— Trump coalition fractures: buyer's remorse among young voters, Hispanic swing back toward Democrats, and how Iran policy + deportation chaos could hurt Republicans heading into the midterms— And MUCH more
On this week's DMZ, Bill Scher and Matt Lewis discuss:— The Epstein Files Bombshell & Alleged Cover-Up — Bill and I go through a deep-dive on the details behind accusations that Donald Trump sexually assaulted a 13-15-year-old girl in the 1980s surfaced — and debate whether the DOJ's handling of this allegation constitutes a “cover-up."— Why MSM Must Step Up on the Trump-Epstein Story — Bill argues traditional outlets have covered associations of other figures (e.g., Bill Gates, Prince Andrew, Woody Allen) far more aggressively than this serious, documented-in-files allegation against Trump — despite previous calls from MAGA figures like Kash Patel and Pam Bondi to release everything.— Trump's Growing Control Over Media Institutions — Paramount's CNN acquisition (amid Trump-friendly Ellison family's reported interference in blocking a Netflix rival bid) is merely the latest example of Trump's broader intimidation/co-option tactics targeting late-night hosts, networks, and independent voices.— Election Integrity Fears — Warnings about a proposed executive order declaring a “national emergency” over baseless Chinese interference claims to seize sweeping control over voting processes, raise concerns Trump might try to rig the midterms.— 2026 Midterm Outlook & Texas Primaries Preview — Bill and I preview the high-stakes Texas Senate primaries ahead of next week's elections. We also discuss the larger implications for general election electability in a potential wave year.— And MUCH more!Subscribe to Matt Lewis on Substack: https://mattklewis.substack.com/Support Matt Lewis at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattlewisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattLewisDCTwitter: https://twitter.com/mattklewisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattlewisreels/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhSMpjOzydlnxm5TDcYn0A– Who is Matt Lewis? –Matt K. Is South Korea the most impersonal country to travel in? Alun's trip in South Korea has been defined by a lack of interactions with both South Koreans and fellow travellers. Why is everyone being replaced by screens and robots? We discuss his findings, as well as the impact technology has had on South Korean society.Alun also recounts his DMZ tour, which was more organised and more funny than he would have liked. Listen to the full podcast: https://bit.ly/SKMPRIDLEYIn this episode, I sit down with Austin comedian Michael Ridley to talk about what it really means to bet on yourself in a culture that feels like it's collapsing into content and chaos. We get into everything — modern warfare as entertainment, prediction markets vs. AI, gambling ads and moral tradeoffs in podcasting, corporate influence behind the scenes, and why so many young men feel stuck between nihilism and virality but at its core, this conversation is about asking better questions and choosing long-term growth over short-term clout. Michael opens up about his journey from addiction and instability to building a life anchored in comedy, marriage, and radical self-belief, and we unpack what it took to move to Austin with no guarantees, grind through multiple jobs while chasing stage time, get banned and level up anyway, and listen to “the whispers” that intuitive pull toward who you're meant to become. This one is about loyalty, resilience, faith, and playing the 20-year game in art and in life.Follow Michael:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ridleysweatyX: https://x.com/ridleysweatyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MichaelRidleyComedy00:00 Introduction04:27 Nothing Better Than a Free Civic07:10 Why There Are No Original Movies Right Now12:21 What Happened to Movie Boobs?14:20 Being Nihilistic Is Gay22:55 Don't Even Think About Selling Weed26:13 Temu Twitter27:24 Raised by Hot Pockets and Cartoon Network29:56 The DMZ of Mental Disability32:01 Making Yourself Useful in Jail35:22 Michael's Superpowers42:33 Healing People with Beyblades46:24 Skank Walking to Six Flags50:16 The Last Time Michael Was in a Tatami Room56:02 Clockwork Orange Out of Context58:54 How “They” Control the Housing Market01:04:46 The January 6th No One Talks About01:08:20 The Government Has Microwave Guns01:17:15 MJ, Kanye, and Industry Power Plays01:26:00 ConclusionListen to the complete episodes of Sky King's Mental Playground, sign up at skmp.supercast.comFollow Sky on XSubscribe on YouTubeFollow Sky on Instagram Hosted on Acast. In this eye-opening DMZ discussion, Bill Scher (Washington Monthly) and Matt Lewis break down Donald Trump's sinking approval ratings in February 2026 — down to the low-to-mid 40s (or even 36% in some polls) amid economic anxiety, immigration chaos, tariffs, and self-inflicted controversies. Is Trump's second term already unraveling? And could a midterm backlash hand Democrats a real shot at flipping the Senate? They dive deep into the 2026 Senate map: — Strong pickup chances in Maine (Susan Collins vulnerable) and North Carolina — Competitive shots in Ohio (Sherrod Brown rematch?), Alaska (Mary Peltola), and long-shot Texas — Key defenses in Georgia, Michigan, and morePlus: Should Democrats pursue accountability for Trump-era actions if they win power, or focus on bread-and-butter issues to avoid backlash? Il potere nasce dalla canna del fucile, diceva Mao Zedong. Ma quando la canna del fucile non è controllata dal Partito comunista cosa succede in Cina? Le recenti purghe di Xi Jinping tra le file dell'esercito, riaccendono un faro sulle relazioni tra militari e Partito. Le speculazioni raccontano di uno scontro di potere tutto interno, ma anche su proiezioni future, come ad esempio la questione Taiwan. In this episode, Agence France-Presse (AFP) global news editor Roland de Courson joins the podcast to discuss his photo-and-essay project — K-Scar — documenting life, memory and tourism along the inter-Korean border. De Courson explains why he describes the border as a “scar” and reflects on how indifference, curiosity and commercialized “dark tourism” shape the way people experience the DMZ and nearby frontline sites. The conversation moves from observatories and curated attractions to quieter human stories, such as aging refugees and communities living inside civilian control zones. He also discusses how art, everyday life and even a Starbucks overlooking North Korea reveal the normalization and contradictions of the border. Roland de Courson is a French journalist born in Madrid. He started his career in Canada and joined AFP in 1994. He is currently a global news editor in Seoul. For over two years, Roland traveled along the inter-Korean border to document his K-Scar project, which can be found online here. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insights from our very own journalists.
In the Spring of 1971, Gary Holian surprised his family by coming home for his R&R from Vietnam. The Gary who arrived at their doorstep was quite unlike the Gary they knew before he left for war. Three months later, Gary was killed when his Huey gunship was shot down over the DMZ. His sisters, Jody and Lory, traveled on Honor Flight Chicago's Mission 125 in September of 2025 to honor his memory. They share their family's story here.
Trump marks one year back in power with Davos threats on Greenland, erratic tariffs, and a "might makes right" worldview. Bill Scher breaks down why much of it won't last — and what it means for America's global role. Trump just told Davos he "won't use force" to take Greenland — but insists the US must own it for security. On the one-year anniversary of his second term, Matt Lewis and Bill Scher dissect Trump's power games: erratic threats, unilateral tariffs that could vanish overnight, the fading US-led world order, Starship Troopers-level "might makes right" vibes, and why his legacy might be more ephemeral than it seems. In this DMZ episode:-- Greenland obsession: Psychological win or strategic folly?-- Tariffs as childish leverage vs. real legislation-- Venezuela ops & domestic overreach-- Has Trump permanently broken alliances? What happens when political labels lose their meaning and institutions begin to forfeit public trust? Corey is joined by Matt Lewis to reflect on how American politics arrived at its current moment and why many of the warnings raised a decade ago now feel unavoidable. The conversation coincides with the ten year anniversary of Matt's book Too Dumb to Fail, which examined the rise of populism, intellectual decay, and the erosion of conservative principles long before Trump reshaped the political landscape. Corey and Matt discuss how conservatism has been reduced less to a philosophy than a posture, why grievance has replaced governing vision, and how former ideological opponents increasingly find themselves aligned around the defense of democratic norms. They explore the shift from the early blogosphere to today's media environment, where platforms like Substack and YouTube have reopened space for longer form thinking and sustained dialogue. The episode also examines institutional credibility in an age of selective outrage. From Christianity to law enforcement, Matt argues that Trump's politics do not merely divide but actively corrode public trust, reshaping how Americans interpret power, legitimacy, and state authority. The conversation closes with reflections on elections, incentives, and the unglamorous discipline required to write and think clearly in public. THE IMPOSSIBLE DMZ Colleague John Hardie. Hardie discusses the complexities of implementing a demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Ukraine, citing disagreements over sovereignty and administration. Regarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, he notes Russia is unlikely to return control to Ukraine. He concludes that peace deals requiring Ukraine to cede territory are "poison pills" likely to fail. NUMBER 14 1943 PARTISANS IN UKRAINE
SHOW 1-5-26 THE SHOW BEGINS IN DOUBTS ABOUT VENEZUELA, NIGERIA, SYRIA, RUSSIA, CHINA 1936 KENYA 1. NIGERIA AIRSTRIKE AND THE JIHADIST SHIFT Guest: Edmund Fitton-Brown Edmund Fitton-Brown analyzes a US airstrike against ISIS in Nigeria, discussing the growing jihadist threat in West Africa's "ungoverned spaces." He highlights a strategic shift where African juntas reject Western support for Russian mercenaries, who offer security without governance conditions, inadvertently boosting local support for Al-Qaeda coalitions like JNIM,,. 2. EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN ALLIANCE VS. TURKEY Guest: Edmund Fitton-Brown Fitton-Brown examines the cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel as a necessary pushback against Turkish President Erdogan's neo-Ottoman expansionism. He argues Erdogan's aggressive rhetoric regarding Jerusalem and maritime claims threatens regional stability, necessitating a unified defense from these democracies to counter Turkish overreach in the Mediterranean,. 3. CHINA'S OIL LOSS IN VENEZUELA Guest: Gordon Chang and Charles Burton The guests discuss how the US removal of Maduro disrupts China's oil supply, leaving Beijing with billions in unpaid debt. They note that Chinese military equipment failed to detect the US operation, embarrassing Beijing. Burton suggests Canada faces a difficult choice between aligning with US hemispheric security or appeasing China,,. 4. 2026: A HOLLOW SUPERPOWER Guest: Gordon Chang and Charles Burton Chang and Burton speculate that the US operation in Venezuela exposes China's inability to protect its allies, making Beijing appear "hollow." Chang argues this weakens China's threat against Taiwan, while Burton suggests that with China's economy failing and its allies collapsing, the regime faces internal instability and a loss of global prestige,. 5. SECTARIAN WARFARE IN SYRIA Guest: Akmed Sharawari Akmed Sharawari reports on escalating violence between Syria's Alawite minority and the central government led by former jihadist Al-Shara. He explains that regime remnants and Russian influence are fueling Alawite defiance, while Druze and Kurdish factions also resist integration, complicating US hopes for a stable, unified post-Assad state,,. 6. WESTERN AIRSTRIKES ON ISIS Guest: Akmed Sharawari Sharawari discusses recent British and French airstrikes against ISIS weapons caches in Syria. He notes that despite opposing the central government, ISIS remains a universal threat. The chaos following the Assad regime's fall has allowed ISIS cells to regroup in urban areas, necessitating Western intervention to destroy their stolen arsenals,. 7. HEZBOLLAH'S LATIN AMERICAN FINANCING Guest: David Daoud David Daoud details Hezbollah's deep entrenchment in Venezuela, used to challenge US hegemony. He explains how the group exploits Latin American networks, illicit trade, and legitimate business fronts within expatriate communities to generate essential funding, compensating for losses in Lebanon and serving Iran's broader strategy in the Western Hemisphere,. 8. LEBANESE ARMY COLLUSION Guest: David Daoud Daoud highlights the compromised nature of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), citing a recent incident where an LAF soldier killed alongside Hezbollah members received a joint funeral. He argues this collusion makes the LAF an untrustworthy partner for Israel, as sectarian loyalties often supersede national duty, leading to dangerous intelligence leaks,. 9. THE FALL OF MADURO Guest: Alejandro Peña Esclusa and Ernesto Araújo Alejandro Peña Esclusa celebrates the swift US capture of Maduro as Venezuela's liberation. He argues Vice President Delcy Rodriguez must now dismantle the "Cartel of the Suns" to avoid Maduro's fate. Ernesto Araújo frames this as a decisive victory for freedom, forcing a choice between democracy and criminal syndicates,,. 10. US DEMANDS: TERRORISTS OUT Guest: Alejandro Peña Esclusa Peña Esclusa supports US demands for Iran, Hezbollah, and the ELN to be expelled from Venezuela, asserting the population shares these desires. He characterizes Maduro as a drug lord and a threat to Western security, criticizing European leftists who condemn the operation for failing to recognize the regime's criminal nature. 11. PANIC AMONG THE LATIN LEFT Guest: Alejandro Peña Esclusa and Ernesto Araújo Ernesto Araújo explains that leftist leaders like Lula and Petro fear the US action against Maduro because their power structures share similar corruption. Peña Esclusa adds that Colombian President Petro is terrified because his campaign was funded by Venezuelan drug money, making him vulnerable to the exposure of these secrets,. 12. THE RIGHTWARD SHIFT IN ELECTIONS Guest: Alejandro Peña Esclusa and Ernesto Araújo Araújo predicts the US action in Venezuela will energize the Latin American right, specifically boosting the Bolsonaro movement in Brazil. Peña Esclusa forecasts electoral defeats for the left in Costa Rica, Peru, and Colombia, arguing the region is turning away from narco-socialism toward US-aligned conservative leadership,. 13. RUSSIA'S MAXIMALIST DEMANDS Guest: John Hardie John Hardie outlines Russia's unyielding demands for peace, including territorial concessions and barring Ukraine from NATO. He notes that while Zelensky is nearing agreement with the West on security guarantees, the gap with Russia remains wide. Hardie urges the Trump administration to increase pressure to force Putin to compromise,. 14. THE IMPOSSIBLE DMZ Guest: John Hardie Hardie discusses the complexities of implementing a demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Ukraine, citing disagreements over sovereignty and administration. Regarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, he notes Russia is unlikely to return control to Ukraine. He concludes that peace deals requiring Ukraine to cede territory are "poison pills" likely to fail,. 15. HAMAS AND THE IMPOSSIBLE RECONSTRUCTION Guest: Peter Berkowitz Peter Berkowitz argues that Hamas, as a Muslim Brotherhood offshoot, remains committed to Israel's destruction, making peace impossible. He criticizes the "Project Sunrise" reconstruction plan, noting that US-led development is futile without first disarming and deradicalizing Gaza, a task only the IDF can currently achieve given Hamas's refusal to surrender,. 16. IRAN ON THE BRINK Guest: Jonathan Sia Jonathan Sia reports on unprecedented Iranian protests and rumors that Ayatollah Khamenei plans to flee to Moscow. He attributes the regime's panic to the recent fall of allies like Maduro. Sia notes a shift in protester sentiment toward pro-monarchy chants, suggesting a coordinated opposition now exists to replace the theocracy,.

A demilitarised zone that invites armoured cars. A referendum that can't be fairly run. A €210 billion pot that solves today's bills but complicates tomorrow's peace. We start with shuttle diplomacy and the hard edges of a potential DMZ in Donetsk. On paper it pauses the fight; in practice Rosgvardiya blurs policing and militarisation, turning “demilitarised” into a loophole big enough for armour. We then map the constitutional and moral traps around wartime elections or referendums, where occupied voters, blocked monitors and legal grey zones collide with Kyiv's need to navigate Washington without capitulating. From there, we track Europe's move to indefinitely freeze Russian sovereign assets and the push to spend them on Ukraine's budget. It feels just and efficient, but invites Russian expropriations at home, lawfare against Euroclear, and counter‑seizures abroad. It also spends tomorrow's reconstruction funds during the war, betting that weary voters will keep paying later. Meanwhile, Moscow counts manpower, energy pressure and US politics more than ledgers, so the deterrent effect may be modest. The Ben Aris article I mention is at: https://www.intellinews.com/commnet-the-eu-s-reparation-loan-vote-needs-to-fail-416078/?source=russia Finally, to a Paris restaurant where a row between Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kara‑Murza exposed a deeper rift inside the exile opposition. PACE's platform and its Berlin Declaration have elevated some factions while sidelining Navalny's network, creating gatekeepers and fresh grievances. The result is predictable: public spats, claims of capture by donors, and propaganda gifts to the Kremlin. The uncomfortable truth remains that Russia's future will be authored inside Russia; exiles matter most when they support rather than splinter the constituencies that still exist at home.Support the show
Step into one of the most volatile places on earth: the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Despite its name, the DMZ is the most militarised border in the world, a tense strip of land dividing North and South Korea since the 1953 armistice. Technically still at war, the two nations face each other across a boundary where even the smallest incident can ignite global attention. In Panmunjom's Joint Security Area, North and South Korean soldiers stand just metres apart. It was here, on 13 November 2017, that the world witnessed a dramatic escape as North Korean soldier Oh Chong-song fled across the border under a barrage of gunfire before collapsing on the southern side and being airlifted to safety. Oh's desperate dash is just one of thousands. Since the end of the Korean War, countless North Koreans have risked everything for a chance at freedom. Join Gary Kent at the DMZ as he uncovers the stories behind this high-stakes border, the human cost of division, and the universal longing for freedom shared by people in every place and every time.
Nathan and Ryan cross the DMZ (metaphorically) to talk about Joint Security Area (2000), Park Chan-wook's breakout thriller that blends political tension, mystery, and emotional drama in a story set at the border between North and South Korea. The hosts dig into the film's Rashomon-style structure, its look at fractured brotherhood, early hints of Park's signature style, and why this film still resonates as one of the strongest anti-war statements of its era. From bullets to bittersweet bonds, Drive-In Double Feature heads into one of the most gripping “what really happened?” mysteries in modern Korean cinema.
One of the defining producers of the 21st century steps up for a rare, era-spanning mix. We've been in a reflective mood lately: mulling emergent icons, modern classic and the cyclical nature of trends. All things bend around eventually, but if you lived through the mid-'00s the first time, it felt tricky to envision some specifics of those interim years making a second splash. More fool us. Amongst many other things, dubstep is well and truly back. This resurged appetite for low-end has been a central storyline in 2025. Clear tells were there in the form of Introspekt's Moving The Center and Tracey's "Sex Life," two major highlights of the past 12 months. Alternately, cup your ear to the tremors rumbling across the world and you'd find Mala packing up crowds with gusto. Which makes closing out the year with a mix from the man himself serendipitous. The South Norwood-born sub sensei has held an anchor role in the movement since its earliest days. A little like what Upsetter was to Black Ark, the principles Mala, Coki and Loefah's DMZ laid down have been expanded on by Deep Medi, a label that has cultivated a loyal fandom who watch over the catalogue like a hawk. (Six years of frothy debate and knowing in-jokes between MEDi 99 and MEDi 100 paints a picture of both steep expectations and an affinity for gently ribbing their leader.) But Mala's banner 2025 hasn't relied on the heads alone. The adrenaline of his fissuring basslines and barrel-chested vocals have drawn people into his orbit, and there are rarer qualities at play, too—like pacifism, winked at by the demilitarized name and reinforced on their all-time greatest tune; or contemplation, inked on flyers beseeching the crowd to meditate on bass weight. In that spirit arrives a mix we've asked after for years. Subtitled The Listening Session, it's rare on two counts. Despite his enduring popularity, Mala is a conspicuous absence on most DJ series. (It's not that he doesn't enjoy recording, just gets spooked by the reaction.) A nearly-three hour studio set—spaciously paced and laced with a combination of 2025 highlights, freshly-cut dubplates and some of the biggest anthems in the genre's history—is unheard of. No tracklist for now, on Mala's request. Soon come. RA.1016 is the kind of document that jogs the memory back to when dubstep was a discrete enterprise, something you could only fleetingly access by, say, dialling into Youngsta on Sub FM, ripping 320s of "Circling" off long-forgotten blogs or hugging the back wall of Mass. Which, in service of thinking the evolution of 21st century electronic music, is pretty perfect really. Find the interview at ra.co/podcast/1035 @maladmz @deep-medi-musik

Ukraine is back in the headlines as President Donald Trump puts forth new peace proposals to the international community. To make sense of where the conflict currently sits and what ending the war would entail, Victor Davis Hanson breaks down the core questions behind the conflict: Why did Putin invade? Why does Russia keep fighting? Why won't NATO fully support Ukraine? And what will it take to end the war? All on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.” “What is the dispute left about? Ukraine's not gonna be in NATO. Putin knows that. All it is, where is the DMZ? Does Putin get to push areas westward that Ukraine, Ukrainians are currently in and fighting successfully and he can't dislodge, or not? So, that's what we're gonna, that's what the dispute is over, and the security guarantees. “If Ukraine is not in NATO, how can it defend the next invasion from Russia? Well, it's the greatest military in Europe right now. It's battle-hardened. It's got a huge army. It's well supplied. Will that continue? Will the EU or NATO continue to arm it? Will the United States back them up in extremis?”

This week, NK News senior analytic correspondent Colin Zwirko joins the podcast to discuss recent developments along the inter-Korean border, as well North Korea's latest event showcasing new air force weaponry. He begins by sharing what satellite imagery shows about the DPRK's construction projects within the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, some of which appear to cross the Military Demarcation Line, the actual border between the two Koreas. The discussion then turns to Kangwon Province, where leader Kim Jong Un appears to be planning to build a new dam that would flood part of the North Korean side of the DMZ. Whether the project is being actively developed is unclear, though it could have serious implications for South Korea. Lastly, Zwirko gives an overview of the recent 80th anniversary of the regime's air force celebration, where it showed off a new drone and other military assets that mimic American weaponry. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insights from our very own journalists.
We look at DMZ, the story of life in the midst of a modern civil war written by Brian Woods with art mostly by Riccardo Burchielli. It's a story with a clear sense of place and some very intriguing characters so naturally it was adapted into a soulless television series in 2022. We discuss both of those as well as the movie that essentially is a proper take on this source material. Listen, share and don't forget to email us at vertigovoices@gmail.com
Korea DMZ—1983. Rip Razorton, a newly minted Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, enters a military environment filled with danger. He learns the DMZ mission from a friendly NCO while being harassed by superior officers. What keeps him going is his love for his exotic Native American girlfriend, Angeni James. Razorton, collecting battlefield intelligence on the North Korean threat at Guard Post Ouellette is taken captive but is saved by SFC “Wild Bill” Harrison. Suffering PTSD, Razorton turns to alcohol to ease the pain and the guilt. Razorton, punished for being defiant to a senior officer following the firefight, is assigned as an army escort for a USO band from America called “Total Infusion.” Feeling empty and full of pain, Razorton continued to drown his guilt and sorrow in alcohol. Then, with no warning at all, the female lead singer of the band with purple hair came to his rescue.
Vietnam began as a distant commitment and became America's longest war. This episode follows the Marines into that storm, from early advisers helping build the Vietnamese Marine Corps to the landings at Da Nang and Chu Lai that drew the Corps into a grinding fight across I Corps. We move from rice paddies and coastal hamlets to high ridges and border valleys, through Starlite and Hastings, the DMZ outposts, the siege of Khe Sanh, and the house to house struggle for Hue. Along the way are names etched in Marine memory, from Con Thien and Dai Do to Dewey Canyon and Go Noi Island, where small units fought under constant fire while air and artillery tried to hold the line. The story ends with withdrawal and the last fights of the Easter Offensive and Mayaguez, then returns to a country that often met its Marines with silence. It is a broken war measured in ruined cities, political fallout, and the weight carried by those who fought it on both sides of the Pacific. Send us a textThe Korean military is haunted — literally and culturally. Soldiers whisper about phantom footsteps, cold spots inside fences, and radio calls from the dead. Peter Greenberg in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1977, White enrolled at Boston University to study journalism. While in school, he worked in a record shop in Brookline, Massachusetts, named Good Vibrations, where his singing was heard by musician Peter Greenberg of the Lyres. White adopted the stage name Barrence Whitfield to avoid being mistaken for superstar Barry White and began performing with Greenberg and former members of the Lyres as Barrence Whitfield & the Savages STARR AND THE CZARS, hailing from Washington, DC, bring together an all-star line-up of garage-rock veterans into one explosive new band. Fronted by JAKE STARR (Adam West, Jake Starr & The Delicious Fullness, Go Mod Go!, Goy Division…), the group also features PETER GREENBERG and MICHAEL LEWIS, two legends from Boston's trailblazing DMZ. After their time in DMZ, Greenberg and Lewis both carried the torch in Lyres, cementing their reputation as key figures of the late '70s and early '80s garage revival. Greenberg later went on to co-found The Customs and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, while Lewis added his bass guitar work to bands such as The A-Bones, Yo La Tengo and The Schramms. Starr, meanwhile, became a fixture of Washington D.C.'s garage scene.

Victor Davis Hanson explains what was (and wasn't) said at the summit, why Russia is appealing directly to Trump and the American people, and how Trump—whether the Left likes it or not—could end this war he didn't start on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “ Ukraine will not be in NATO. They don't have the military wherewithal. They have the moral edge and the moral right—but they don't have the military wherewithal. Nor does Europe or the United States want to go to that length to give it to them against nuclear Russia to reclaim the Donbas—all of the Donbas—or Crimea. “ The summit was about what we could expect. Putin wants to win over America so then America will back off from Ukraine, and so it can get some more mileage westward and further deteriorate or erode or detrite the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian military is pretty tough. It's hanging in there. It wants enough aid to leverage Putin. And between those two poles, there will be a DMZ. And if there is a peace settlement, it will be the work—whether the Left likes it or not—of Donald Trump, the one world leader, among the three, that has nothing to do with this war.”
