For the twelfth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Jamie 3:26 representing stories from Chicago. We discuss a range of topics including his formative music experiences growing up in the Beverly area on the South Side of Chicago, as well as being an adamant fan and follower of Ron Hardy around Chicago in the late 80's and Early 90's. Additionally, we discuss the origins and evolution of his career as a DJ and producer, and much more."The dance floor of Chicago's Jamie 3:26 is one in which music heads and party goers alike can't help but lose themselves in the rhythm. Driven by his desire to provide a liberating outlet for people, Jamie has garnered recognition for his fiercely masterful selection.Touring globally and asserting himself on lineups, Jamie continues to flex his musical muscles and push boundaries. Groove is the feeling when it comes to Jamie's sets – which he curates by embracing everything from 30-year-old overlooked gems to scorching new tracks. Jamie's productions are just as memorable as his sets and as head of 3:26 records he continues to nurture his sound and future talent. No stranger to remix duties, Jamie's recent spin on Glitterbox's ‘Gonna Be Alright' is already a staple in bag of respected selectors.Unapologetically authentic, Jamie 3:26 embodies the future of Chicago House music."Support the show

Welcome back guys, here on ESOA Podcast. Unfortunately, once again my guest for this episode cancelled just before the end. This immediately inspired me to record a musical special for you. I decided on a Chicago House and Techno special. Alongside Detroit, Chicago is clearly an important cornerstone. Without it, techno and house would not exist in their current form. Think about the impact that tracks like Move your Body or Acid Tracks still have today. Frankie Knuckles began playing early electronic productions back in 1977 in the then newly opened, rather run-down but well-equipped Warehouse club. A sound that continued to develop into later house and techno, with great, unforgotten names such as Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Tyree Cooper, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Pierre, Phuture, Mike Dunn, K-Alexi Bad Boy Bill, "Fast" Eddie Smith, Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter made history. The sound was released on labels such as DJ International, Dance Mania, Jack Trax, Underground Records and Trax Records. Friends, let this sound inspire you for the next two and a half hours. Have fun with ESOA Podcast 072 by myself, Thomas Schubert. Thanks for tuning in. You never know what you're going to get if you see the name Hieroglyphic Being on a record or a flyer, but there's a good chance it'll be some of the best, most jacking house you've ever heard. Jamal Moss embodies the the spirit—and the past, present and future—of Chicago's house music scene, but he also carries the torch for Afrofuturism, free jazz and avant-garde music. He follows in the footsteps of important figures like Sun Ra and Ron Hardy, his work blending these traditions with a healthy dose of post-punk, too. For over two decades, Moss's Mathematics Recordings label has been one of the premiere sources of raw, analogue house music, helping put producers like John Heckle on the map. He has a sprawling solo discography, encompassing projects like I.B.M., Members Only and The Sun God. He also put out one of our favourite albums last year with Thank U 4 The Tracks U Lost, released on Modern Love under his given name. Live, Moss usually jams on a few pieces of gear, to fantastic and sometimes bewildering effect. This RA Podcast is a two-hour recording of a live set from public records in New York. It features all the raw, powerful house music you'd expect—made with two iPads and a MIDI controller—but it's also loaded with gorgeous, ghostly melodies and an opening section that touches on trance, trip-hop and '90s electronica. This is a rare live recording that captures a genius at work. Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/888

054: Roy Davis Jr. Roy Davis Jr. is a DJ, producer and label owner that has been part of the dance music community since the very beginning. Growing up in Chicago, the birthplace of House music, Roy was surrounded by the sounds of this new genre; whether it was living down the street from DJ Pierre or hearing Ron Hardy tapes blasting out of boomboxes - the possibilities drove a young Roy to start experimenting with equipment and this eventually led him to become a part of legendary outfit Phuture, as well as working with icons such as Marshall Jefferson. Arguably most well known for his massive single 'Gabriel,' a foundational track in the UK Garage scene, Roy always brings a soulful edge to his sets and is looking forward to celebrating some key milestones in 2023 - including the digitisation and re-release of his entire Undaground Therapy Muzik (UTM) record label, featuring tracks from: Men From The Nile, Turquoise Colored French Tourists, Nico Lahs and Al Zanders.FOLLOW US Instagram: @houseculturenetSpotify: HouseCulture - Perfect PlaylistOnline: www.houseculture.net|| Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseculture. In City Scenes we focus on the music scene of a different city each week, taking in a bit of the history, hearing music by some of the most famous artists to come out of whichever city we're focusing on, and learning about exciting current day sounds that are being made in it right now. We're going through the Alphabet from A-Z and for this episode we're on C and looking at the City of Chicago. Chicago is a City of 2.6 million people located in the state of Illinois in the American Midwest of the USA. It has a huge musical history that it would be impossible to try and cover in the space of half an hour so today we look at some of the main styles of music that the city is known for, namely blues, soul, Chicago house and hip hop and finally we look at an exciting new wave of indie rock bands that are currently stirring things up in the city. To understand the roots of the music that Chicago has produced over the years we can look back to a phenomenon called the Great Migration which happened in between 1910 and 1970. During this time there was a huge influx of poor African American workers to Chicago who arrived escaping the segregation and discrimination that existed in southern states of the USA and seeking employment in the industrial cities of the north. Of course these migrants brought a huge wave of culture to the city and the musical traditions of Jazz and Blues arrived with them. In Chicago these music forms developed and evolved and Chicago came to be known as a center for what people called Chicago Blues and Chicago-Style or Dixieland Jazz. Some of the most famous blues musicians of all time are from the city of Chicago such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf and Chicago Blues which generally featured electrically amplified Guitars, bass guitars, drums and piano, was an important step and influence in the development of what we know as Rockn Roll Music. In the 1960s and 1970s Chicaco was also a centre for soul music which also found its way up to the city from the southern states of the USA. Artists like Curtis Mayfield, The Staple Singers, Earth Wind and Fire and Chaka Khan are all children of Chicago. Another type of music that was created and is synonymous with Chicago is House music or Chicago house as its also known. House music these days is at the center of modern day dance music and its influence is directly responsible for most of the music we hear in clubs all over the world. House music started when DJs like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy started playing Disco music and early European electronic music in Chicago nightclubs with a focus on the repetitive and rhythmic drum and bass elements in each track. Soon local producers like Marshall Jefferson started recording their own DIY versions of the music they were hearing in clubs and House music was born. Chicago House music that can be identified by a steady 4 to the floor beat made with drum machines, synthesized basslines and melodies, soulful vocals and samples. But the original format of house music has been developed and evolved into countless forms of dance music such as techno, trance, dance pop and bass music. In more recent times, one of the most famous artists to have come out of the city is Kanye West, who has done huge things in terms of putting Chicago on the map when it comes to Hip Hop in the USA. Finally, we end this episode of City Scenes with a look at the current day DIY inde guitar rock scene that is currently flourishing in the city. Bands like Friko and lifeguard, Post Office Winter and Horsegirl are part of an exciting new wave of young talented musicians that are currently putting out music, playing house shows and supporting each other as a scene. We would recommend diving into all of their music to hear what all the noise is about. Next week we`ll be back for another City Scenes with the letter D and we will be going 4 hours down the road to Detroit

I am happy to announce the relaunching of my radio show and its new title, The Black Atlantic/Black Fantastic, on 1BTN every second Sunday from 4-6 pm (UK) and 11-1 (EST). Starts today!Shout out to Paul Gilroy's text The Black Atlantic and the late Caribbean Canadian Richard Iton, whose epic work, In Search of the Black Fantastic, shaped much of my approach to the diaspora. For those of you who I've rolled with for years, you know his book has been cited like the bible. It has been since 2013.And speaking of the bible…I'm kicking off the show this month with a love letter to Black queer music. No, not just black queer folk who make music, but the music you might hear on a Black queer dance floor. Or music played by a Black queer DJ like Ron Hardy or Stacy Hotwaxx Hale. It might be white queer musicians like Bowie and Arthur Russell whose music crossed over into Black queer spaces. Or music Keith Harring heard at the Paradise Garage. It could even be all the gospel disco that Larry Levan mixed, from the Clark Sisters to the Joubert Singers.Tune in to hear the range and learn how long Black queer folks have been shaping much of the pleasure in your lives, or listen later (link in bio). Little Richard, of course, was the King and Queen of it all.

Mike Dunn interviewed by Lenny Fontana for True House Stories # 080 (Part 2) Word soon spread about his talents and Mike Dunn was booked for various clubs in and around Chicago, DJ'ing with house music innovators such as Ron Hardy, Larry Heard and good friend Armando Gallop. It wasn't long before Mike got the production bug, resulting in his first release in 1987, “Dance You Mutha” on Westbrook Records, he also started to produce and engineer for other Chicago artists, such as Armando, Fast Eddie and K-Alexi Shelby. More house and techno productions followed in the late 80s with Mike's distinctive vocal delivery and trademark hip-house, acid, production style, to create tracks such as ‘Let It Be House', ‘Magic Feet' and “Face the Nation”, sometimes under the name Mike Dunn but also under aliases such as MD Connection, MDIII and QX-1. He continued to produce and release throughout the 1990s, with releases on labels such as Nervous, Nitestuff and Tribal America, whilst also working with other producers and vocalists such as Syleena Johnson, Byron Stingley, Mina Jackson, Kool Rock Steady and Kym English to name a few. Puff Daddy in the late1990s stepped to Mike and signed him to a production deal with the artists he managed and produced in hip hop artists. We discuss the origins founders of House music, Techno, and Dubstep that were all created by black men. Dj Frankie Knuckles, DJ, Ron Hardy, and Larry Levan created the genre house music in the 1970s. The Belleville Three is a group credited with inventing the musical style known as Detroit Techno. The group consists of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. Starting out in the Chicago house scene, his early tracks like ‘Open Our Eyes' and ‘7 Ways to Jack' were put out on the TRAX Records label and made an impact on the scene, but it was his use of piano in ‘Move Your Body' that bought wider attention to his work.Since those early years, Marshall has helped to develop the acid house movement with his work on ‘Acid Trax' with DJ Pierre in 1987. He also turned his hand to deep house, most notably on ‘Open Our Eyes', released in 1988 on Big Beat. He headlined the first House Music Tour of Europe in 1987 and in the 90s did a five-year residency with the Tribal Gathering and Big Love Events in London, during which time he released his 1997 studio album Day Of The Onion. In 2021, Marshall teamed up with Byron Stingily to release a new album 'Judgement' under the Ten City band name, their first collaboration in 25 years.https://www.beatport.com/artist/ten-city/39865Caro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Bside Incoming: Gene Hunt This man should need no introduction... he's one of Chicago's finest, which, let's be honest is saying something and it's no exaggeration to say that he is a legendary icon and pioneer of house music… Gene Hunt. With a fashion designer for a mother, one grandfather being a jazz musician, and the other a DJ, Gene certainly has creativity flowing through his veins. So, from the age of thirteen he pursued his passion for music by taking to the decks, and only a few years later he was already rising through the ranks of Chicago's thriving underground House scene. It was none other than Li'l Louis who gave him his first shot at the legendary Warehouse club, with strong support from Frankie Knuckles, while it was Ron Hardy that really took him under his wing. With constant pressure from the three kings of Chicago it wasn't long before the apprentice became a master of his craft, and cemented himself as a pillar of the scene at Warehouse/Music Box. The club attributed to the creation of House music and the space that would help define the hedonistic escapism of dance music across the world. The enchanting music of Gene and Ron at Music Box inspired a generation in Chicago, not least Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson who brought them Strings of Life in 1987. After a short Hip-Hop hiatus in California producing rap music with Bone Thugs N Harmony and Snoop Dogg, he returned to House music to nourish the fresh wave of talented artists and continue his legacy through DJing and an ever growing love of music production. Few have done more in the service of dance music, so it is such a privilege to have an insight into the record collection of a true great. His personal favourites, and most cherished records… His hottest ‘jams', ‘some real uncut Marvin Gaye', and a ‘seriously rare' Yoko Ono dub plate. “House is a feeling“, as the song lyric goes, and those who love it will happily testify to that. Its percussion-led rhythmicbeats are firmly driven by its African roots; this music is best appreciated by people who love to dance. The 4/4 time drum percussion with low frequency, heavy basslines are the reason it’s not just music to listen to but to “feel”…it can touch your soul, make you dance and lift your spirit. “Oh yes, you can definitely feel it!!” Origins The term “House” is much debated as to exactly when and who tagged it, but the most accepted version is that it was derived from the Warehouse Nightclub in Chicago where the legendary Frankie Knuckles DJ’d, and developed a distinct sound mainly due to the electronic drum machines of the day (Roland TR-808, TR-909 and later the TB 303 for Acid House). It’s been quoted that record stores began to sell some of these records and labelled them “as played at the Warehouse”, which became shortened to “house music”. Some of the early pioneer artists were Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard (aka Mr Fingers & Fingers Inc.), Chip E, Tyree Cooper, Rocky-Jones, Ron Hardy, DJ Leonard “Remix” Roy and many more. The roots of house music stem from Chicago, whilst some may argue and contest such a statement it's hard to deny the influence that the city has upon the genre, even some forty odd years later. New York also has a place in the heart of house, a city born upon breaks and disco culture before being re-imagined by the likes of Larry Levan who interacted and with music by the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Jesse Saunders, Ron Hardy and Larry Heard. Dj Spen grew up in Baltimore, watching on with keen interest he observed the lineage between the cities, the pioneers and the sounds. In the eighties he was a hip hop dj, appearing regularly on the radio. It was only later that he would evolve his sound and begin to piece together his own musical narrative which lead to him being more prolifically involved in house music. Over the years he has released music most prominently via Basement Boys Records and Black Vinyl Records. It is at this point in his career in which we focus, a time when house music was alive, evolutionary and perhaps its most dynamic. We invited Dj Spen to record a mix, an ode to the sound of Chicago upon which he was raised and hasn't left since.

The past few years have seen a new-wave of exciting and daring parties re energise the Manchester scene, many taking place at the now notorious White Hotel and often within a daring continuum of queer and alternative rave culture. Alongside the likes of Kiss Me Again, High Hoops and the timeless Homoelectric, Body Horror has made sheer impact with occasional but unforgettable transmissions of filth and fury from an uncompromising collective. Lead by resident DJs Bleaching Agent and The Niallist, two veterans of the UK noise and techno scene who will doubtlessly be familiar to panel-beating enthusiasts world over, Body Horror speaks for the pair’s shared, lifelong passionate pursuit of “bad taste, glamour and extreme noise terror”. Featuring one of the rawest, wildest dance floors imaginable and tone-setting performance from bloodthirsty drag acts, each ritual of body-positive carnage is accompanied by a soundtrack that veers from unapologetic Italo, nosebleed techno to truly weird no-wave and EBM. In similar spirit, their contribution to #PHANTASYMIX sounds something like Claudio Simonetti going B2B with Ron Hardy. This is pure, grotty bits-of-body music for dark souls with a good sense of humour.

At the age of just 11 he lived down the road from early DJ group Direct Drive and it was at these block parties that Scott decided that this is what he wanted to do. That his inspiration should be so deeply rooted in live music and the dance floor environment makes sense – he has become known as one of the most innovative and dynamic club DJs from the Motor City with his own deep and textured house & techno sound. In those early days of the Detroit techno scene Patrice was exposed to legendary artist and disc jockeys like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills as well as radio personality The Electrifying Mojo. Patrice also was profoundly inspired by the Chicago Sounds of Larry Heard, Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles a few hundred miles west. Patrice’s music reflects much of the rich sound palette of deep house and techno from the 1990’s but combines this with a sense of constant innovation which depends less on trends and fashions and more on Scott’s own passion for seeking out an otherworldliness in music. Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and grab some free downloads: http://soundcloud.com/monologues Girls of The Internet is the sound of a music-industry long-timer reinventing themselves, indulging their love of classic disco house while also producing soulful live organic cuts. Their mix for us is a riotous journey through house music past, present and future. *How would you describe your sound?* Patrick Adams making records for Dance Mania. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The biggest influence for me right now is seeing people enjoy our music, it completely blows me away when people message to say they like our stuff, especially when women or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Electronic music is such a horrible schlong fest, and so many of the male DJs act so horrendously in the way they treat women at shows. It’s great to know we’re appealing to more than just banty lads. Another big influence is our collaborators; the vocalists and illustrators/painters we get to work with through the band are all amazing, and hugely inspirational to work with. Anybody who has ever met me will know how important Stereolab are to me, as I’ve probably tried to shame you into listening to them at some point. I love Chaka Khan, Patrick Adams. I could list musical influences for ages, but it would be pretty boring. I don’t have any big secrets nobody else has, and I’ve always tried to share music I love to whoever is listening to me. Some of my early influences in house were Pepe Bradock, Cajual, Basic Channel, Armand Van Helden, Henry Street, Masters At Work... I don’t listen to too much modern house — it has to be pretty incredible for me to need to add it to my collection. What I take away from other people’s music is how certain sounds work together; how a drum hit and a weird noise work together in a Prince record, or how a saturated kick in a Green Velvet record affects the mood of the track is where my brain goes. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It’s mainly sample based stuff we’re releasing on the run up to our debut album. Normally we work with musicians and vocalists, but I’m completely obsessed with ‘90s disco house, so I made a load of tracks while the album comes together. Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy looping disco records was what started everything — disco loops and drum machines are the purest form of house music as far as I’m concerned. House should be fun, and I wanted to try and convey the fun side of Girls’ with these EPs. I feel like I’m cheating when I sample other people’s music, which is why I try and call it an ‘edit’ or ‘mixtape’ when I’m looping other people’s work. The non-sample, full band, full production stuff is; our debut single ‘When U Go' which got picked up by Classic, which is the first full piece of music I made myself. 'Fondness Makes The Heart Grow Absent', which we self released last year, and it’s already been licensed for a few big compilations this year. It started life as a remix I did for somebody that got rejected, so I took all the original parts I recorded for the remix — guitar, bass, cut them up, added some synths and turned it into a loose cover of ‘It’ll All Be Over’ by The Supreme Jubilees, with Gershom Brown on vocals. The last track on the mix is called ‘Humble’ and features ex-Brand New Heavies vocalist and one of my good buddies Linda Muriel. It’s the lead single from our upcoming album. It’s a 2-steppy garage-ish thing. I made a version with live instruments, but I've ended up using the demo version with me playing everything on keyboard for the album, as it was impactful than the live version. I wanted to use a bit more music from the album on this mix, but it’s a bit too early to play too much of it publicly. Oh also, there is a remix of a track I made with the Ballroom MC Princess Precious Ebony, who features heavily on the Viceland documentary series ’My House’, and is an incredible person and a pleasure to work with. It’ll probably be a B-side to one of the singles from the album. I’ve been involved in music for a long time behind the scenes, and I’m just amazed at the incredible reaction we get for Girls’ stuff so far. We have a small group of fans who are so supportive and send us such amazing messages all the time. It’s really humbling. The music industry can be a horrible place — often unpleasant people behaving awfully with shady agendas and negative energy. It’s amazing to be involved in something that’s just about positivity and making great music. Hope you enjoy the show and here's some more infomation on the man himself: If life is about "being in the right place at the right time," then Diz's timing could not have been better. Born and raised in Chicago, the original epicenter of the House Music uni-verse, his adolescence coincided with the beginnings of that city's legendary scene. Nowadays, if you mention Diz's name amongst House aficionados, you are almost cer-tain to hear adoration and respect for his insane DJ skills, stage presence, and warm-hearted personality. Diz's musical influences started at home, where his mother's love for Jazz led him to pursue the saxophone for many years. His DJ beginnings were about whatever he could get his hands on, like Disco and old Breaks records inherited from family members. When he was 14, his older brother took him to The Music Box, where Diz witnessed the true potential of House Music: to affect people's emotions and bring them together on a collective journey. He's been striving to do just that ever since, and in the process, has become a faithful participant in the music, the culture, and the times.  Throughout high school, he frequented parties featuring DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Farley and many other masters, and finally had a chance to break into the scene at age 19 after meeting contemporaries Mark Farina, Derrick Carter and Spencer Kincey (Gemini). His early gigs were at Alcazar with Gemini, and at one-off parties. At his Wicker Park loft, what started as a means of paying the rent developed into a two-year run as a nightclub, featuring Diz, Farina and Mark Grant on the decks. Soon after-wards, he and his friends took over Shelter, one of the city's "most severe night spots." >From roughly 1993-98, Diz was the Friday resident at Shelter, and the Saturday resi-dent at Red Dog alongside Johnny Fiasco, and since then has held many residencies at other legendary Chicago spots.  In 1995, Diz accepted a job working for his brother's friend, Anthony Pearson (Chez Damier), at PRESCRIPTION (the label founded by Chez and Ron Trent). PRESCRIP-TION conducted distribution business with CAJUAL, and that is how Diz met his future producing partner and close friend, Joshua (whose nickname as fate would have it, was "Iz").  In 1995, Iz n Diz produced their first record together, "Ghosts in Detroit," released on PRESCRIPTION's sub-label, BALANCE. A year later, Joshua/Iz moved back to San Francisco, but he and Diz maintained a close friendship over the years and continue to produce together for labels like CLASSIC, AESOTERIC, GUIDANCE, TWEEKIN', SIL-VER NETWORK, and PANHANDLE. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience. Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. Business As Usual: August Track Listing: 01. Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Specter on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spectertetrode Andres Ordonez aka Specter developed and crafted his signature style of the Chicago house sound over a span of 22 years. Specter’s ambience-driven, organic touch exudes an infectious groove that is deeply soulful, sensual, earthy, warm and nocturnal with a good measure of sublime disco, acid house, jazzy inflections and pure funk. Specter’s interest in house music piqued in the 80′s, when the wunderkind genre blew up in the city of Chicago. Specter would tape and devour the novel, often raw and eventually legendary mixes from radio stations like WBMX, WCYC, WCRX, WKKC and WGCI. Early influences include DJs like Farley Jackmaster Funk, Edward Get Down Crosby, Mickey Oliver, Bobby Q bobby,Lee Collins, Lil Louis and the inimitable Ron Hardy. Specter started DJaying at the age of 15 playing house, disco and italo . Spinning at basement parties around the city and suburbs. When Chicago’s loft-party and rave scene started to take off in the mid-90s, Specter began incorporating the edgier, minimal heat of Detroit techno into his sound. By 1999 and 2000, Specter had established himself as a respected DJ through his many mix tapes and playing loft parties around the city, He Also co-founded a production label with Damon Lamar aka Baby pop called Tetrode Music. The first EP release from Tetrode dropped in 2000 and became a underground classic. “For All the Music/Mystery”. Following up with the second release “Mediterranean/Defining Moment” in 2002. Tetrode 03 came out two years later in 2004 titled “The Deep Theory Ep”. and The tetrode sessions in 2009.

Two things we are famous for in Chicago is House music and deep dish pizza. Chicago house is more traditional sound that evolved from disco and soul music. Chicago Deep dish pizza is actually assembled 'upside-down' from their usual order on a pizza. The crust is covered with cheese (generally sliced mozzarella), followed by various meat options such as pepperoni or sausage, the latter of which is sometimes in a solid patty-like layer. Other toppings such as onions, mushrooms and bell peppers are then also used. An uncooked sauce, typically made from crushed canned tomatoes, is added as the finishing layer. It is typical that when ordered for carry-out or delivery, the pizza is uncut, as this prevents the oils from soaking into the crust, causing the pie to become soggy. Chicago deep house is a name given to a sub-genre of house music coined in the mid- to late 1980s.The rationale behind "Deep" meaning that the more obscure the song, the "deeper" the DJ had to dig into his/her record collection to find that particular song. "Deep House" were tracks that were not played on any of the radio stations house mixes in Chicago and you only heard these "Deep House" tracks in the clubs. There were also a lot of 'house' tracks that were played exclusively in Chicago only and the only way one could hear those tracks was to be in Chicago at anyone of those clubs. Also, DJ's such as Ron Hardy or Frankie Knuckles could re-edit a track to make it deeper than the original. For example, when Ron Hardy did the re-edit for Nightlife's Unlimited, "Peaches & Prune" that track (the re-edit) became a "Deep House" Chicago style house track. You only heard Ron Hardy's version at the Muzic Box and you could not hear or find the re-edit outside of Chicago during those times. So just like I have have a taste and connection to Chicago Deep Dish pizza I also have a strong taste and connection to Deep House music. So I decided to cook up a bit to share with you my friends. Biography:"The first time I ever put two records together I was 11. The first time I ever played at a club -- 18. And the first place I had a full-blown residency was at the Powerhouse with Ron Carroll, DJ Rush and myself, in… well, the poster on the wall over there says "1990". - Gene Farris | 5 Magazine Since then, Gene, at 6' 7", has become one of the most accomplished, if not one of the "biggest", DJ/Producers in House Music, releasing some of dance music's hottest anthems on his label, Farris Wheel Recordings with The Copa Cabana (sold 25,000 units), The Spirit (with DJ Sneak remixes) as well as Defected's 2001 classic, Sanctified Love, CR2's, The Big Doopie Rmx's and Cajual with Summer Affair. Depending on the continent, talent or party you find Gene performing, you can count on him setting the tone with his distinctive "funky summer Chicago hot kinda vibe"; simply put, "funky, dirty, sexy, grooving beats". Chicago born and raised, Gene was inspired by the likes of Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil Louis, Derrick May, Mark Farina, Prince and Roy Ayers. Combined with his love for disco, Gene developed his style of seamless mixes blending funk, disco and soul with 80s pop. Gene joined forces with Cajmere (aka Green Velvet | Relief Records); the partnership proved to be the perfect fit. The duo produced smash club killers like The Music Box, Edge Of The Looking Glass, Red Line, The Inside and Le Mirage. Currently, the duo is in the studio working on several productions to be released later this year. Farris started his own label - Farris Wheel Recordings, which has continued to be one of the leaders in underground house music. The Farris Wheel Family releases remixes and full productions from some of the worlds most prolific and respected dance music producers for over a decade, such as J.T. Donaldson, Chuck Love, 1200 Warriors, Stacey Pullen, Glenn Underground, Greenskeepers, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Boo Williams, DJ Sneak, Brett Johnson, Miguel Migs and Jay-J. With over 100 productions, 6 albums and performances in over 30 countries, Gene still finds time to share his passion for music with kids in China. Suggested by a friend, Gene's produced a series of videos about how to get youth inspired, and in to, electronic music and Dj-ing. 01. How did you approached to the dj profession? I started djing very young and was introduced to me by some local friends.. 02. Tell us of your first time playing in a in club. The first time I played a club I was extremly nervous, I still remember my sweaty hands it was at the PowerHouse in Chicago a very popular club back in the day.. I pulled it out was a great night a lot of oldschool djs began to give me props after that party.. 03. What device do you prefer to use in your live and studio set up? I use logic and Reasons in the studio with a few other key toys;) 04. What you think about digital music? I think it fine, music has to move forward, I mean were would we be if we never moved from 8 track or reel to reel? Everything must progress or it stops moving.. 05. What are your favorite records label? I have a few Cajual, Farris Wheel, Defected, Soma, Sampled, Guesthouse & Large.. 06. What lead you to found Farris Wheel Recordings? I started Farris Wheel In 1998 originally just for another outlet to put out my music and it just grew into a life of it's own, it's kinda it's own living thing now when I make music for my label I have to make sure it fits the "Farris Wheel" sound.. 07. In your opinion how would electronic music change in the next 10 years? Everything goes full circle I think in ten yrs it will be simular to what u hear now but it will be much much cleaner.. 08. What you love and what you hate in dj's life? I love the Music, the Parties, the attention, the planes, the hotels, the food, the cheddar, I Hate the Haters lol.. 09. And constantly make new ideas push the boundary! 10. Can you tell us something about your future works? WildSeed Music NYC is proud to present its first ever double mixed cd, High Holy Days: The History and Future of House Music. Episode 1 ”“The Children of Baldwin,” explores several periods of classic house where I mix both Chicago and New York City underground gay club hits to highlight the infant stages of house music. This compilation focuses on the music of two popular clubs credited with initiating the globalization of house music: Dj Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage Club in New York City and DJ Ron Hardy’s Music Box in Chicago. Many dancers, djs and listeners from the early house music community have succumbed to HIV/AIDS. When mixing this compilation, I made a conscious decision to honor the people who built the temples where “the children” dance, but did not have a chance to tell there stories. Both Ron Hardy and Larry Levan died in 1992 from complications related to intense drug use, although Ron Hardy’s death was also HIV/Aids related. One critical point that I’ve discussed in my project is the impact of addiction and the HIV/Aids epidemic on house music culture. Through this mix I hoped to have brought voice to the untold stories and visibility to the people that generated a global musical movement. This podcast premiered during the Atlanta Black Pride, one of three of the largest festivals in the country, in 2011. My aim for this release was to offer more than a party to celebrate our lives, but to lift the names of those who have passed on and to recognize what LGBTQ contribute to American culture. Episode 2, “Mighty Real: The Sound of Tomorrow” pulls on current producers who incorporate elements of classic house, but also push beyond the borders of acceptable dance-floor grooves. Sylvester helped shape a soulful, yet formulaic genre of house music that focuses on spiritual-sexually-inspired falsetto vocals and driving, repetitive disco rhythms. This mix is dedicated to his artistry, fearlessness and commitment to authenticity. Liner notes for High Holy Days feature two of my favorite scholars and house heads: The first is Thokazani Mhblambi, A South African ill-disciplined musicologist; shifting between diverse creative genres, from classical music to sound art and display. I will interview Thokazani in South Africa to discuss electronic music (Kwaito and House) in the Post Apartheid era. The following excerpt was pulled from his article “Freedom in the Age of Democracy” and best describes the sentiment behind “The Children of Baldwin” mix. “Music’s fluidity, its ability to exist in-context and in many other contexts simultaneously, can provide a stimulus towards the direction of freedom. But for house music to do this, it needs to be rescued from the context of excess and accumulation and loaded with transformative content of liberation. It needs to be freed from the ghettoes of global cultures of consumerism, which seek to marginalize the contributions of the church, gospel music, African spirituals, gay-club culture all of which have been foundational to its origins.” Read the article in its entirety here. http://www.archivalplatform.org/blog/entry/freedom_in_the/ The second scholar provides Haiku poetry inspired by Episode 2. “My journey into becoming a DJ began in 1981. I was in a dance group called “The Boy scouts” we were at this club in Chicago called The Playground. The resident DJ was Farley Funkin’ Keith, now known as Farley Jack Master Funk. He was one of the hottest DJ’S back in that time. Listening to him spin, the tricks, the blends, and the records he played, grabbed me by the collar. I enjoyed the way the crowd responded to the way Farley was playing, how he held their attention, never letting them go. Month’s later I bought a pair of Technic turntables and a Teledyn mixer. I began my record collecting by purchasing records from stores like Import ECT, Loop records, Second Hand Tunes & Gramma Phone. Just to name a few, songs like “Keep On Dancing,” “Keep Your Body Working,” “Martin Circus” “Klein MBO Theme,” were some of the hottest records out. Now as I began maturing in music Disco and Garage became another one of my passions. From the playground I went to Mendell, Sauers, C.O.D.’s, Bismarck hotel and other parties. At C.O.D’s, there was this DJ by the name of Lil Louis. He was one of the hottest DJ’s in the 80’s of the house scene in Chicago, as well as a very dynamic producer. He really touched me with his tracks and the mixture of disco. There would be five hundred + people at these parties. No one going home until the wee hours of the morning. But it wasn’t until I heard the great late, legendary, Ron Hardy spinning at this club called The Muzic Box, which was located on Lower Wacker Drive. From the time you walked into the Box you were captivated, put in a trance. It was dark, with only the brightness of the flashing strobe lights bouncing off of the walls. The sound system was one of the best in the city. Ron Hardy knew how to grab the crowd. He knew how to work the crowd. He made many edits of certain records, and he was even a record producer. With his style and the system no track or record ever sounded the same. This made me want to really learn the craft. I began trying different things with records until I developed my own style. I have had the pleasure of spinning at clubs such as Retno 5, The Concrete Jungle, Jackson Harbor Bar & Grill, Hi Ricky’s, The Fiz Bar, Slicks, Family Den just to name a few. Some of the past DJ’s who were a major influence on me were: Farley, Steve Hurley, and Ron Hardy, Lil Louis, & Frankie Knuckles. Some of my present influences: Mark Grusane and Mike Cole of Mr. Peabody records: much love, and Baby Funk Roy, Joseph Colbourne ( He’s the real deal!!!! ) also I must not forget Soul in the Hole’s Lee Collins and Sadar Bahar.
