For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000. The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again. Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. When he's not behind the decks at home clubs Tresor Berlin and RSO, on the road to places like Batumi, Georgia or Trapani, Italy, or in the studio making music for labels like RSPX/Rekids, BPitch Berlin, Suspected Music, Third Ear, Elypsia Records, or his own Pure Sonik Records label, he is making new paintings and organizing art openings showcasing his iconic works. Oldham has put on art happenings in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, and Detroit, as well as his iconic techno artworks being on view in Paris, London and Dusseldorf, as part of its traveling “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers” exhibit. The multi-talented Oldham has also made his artistic debut in Kobe, Japan in 2022 with the exhibit “Massive Dynamic” at the Nick Jerky Art Cafe. In 2024, Oldham was also honored by the Mayor and Detroit City Council with a “Spirit of Detroit” Award for his musical and artistic contributions to his hometown. And back in Berlin, as part of Love Parade founder Dr. Motte's Rave The Planet team, Oldham helped Berlin Techno to achieve UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Oldham's long-awaited EP as DJ T-1000 for Rekids sub-label RSPX is out now, as well as his new “Ask Me No Questions And I'll Tell You No Lies” EP on Pure Sonik Records, currently riding high on several Spotify techno charts including Mary Anne Hobbs' on BBC6. Detroit? Motown!

Occa is a DJ and promoter from the northernmost region of Japan, Hokkaido. Occa has been organizing his own party ARCHIV at the sacred club, Precious Hall for over 10 years. Musically he combines the spiritualism of Psychedelic Music, the storytelling nature of House Music, the sci-fi dystopian feel of Detroit Techno and the trance of Minimal Music in a three-dimensional way through his deft mixing. He has been invited to play at institutions such as DJ NOBU's Future Terror, Mindgames' The Labyrinth/Balance, Spekki Webu's Mirror Zone 5 Years Tour in EU, System Revival and Georgia's legendary Bassiani. This mix is inspired by his Sci-Fi Shamanism set recorded at the Transcendence 2024 ceremony, held deep in the forests of Japan. Expect an absolutely mind altering journey of pounding tribal drums, haunted drones and ethereal melodies delicately sprinkled throughout. Quite the trip if we say so ourselves. Rotterdam based underground dance music DJ. Recording music since 2012 under alias Lenson, responsible for Rotterdam Electronix. Born and raised on the outskirts of Rotterdam, Lenson (real name: Len Ander Som) is one of the up and coming underground Techno artists hailing from Europe biggest harbour city. Inspired by his brothers cassette collection, Lenson started his musical exploration at an early age. His first outing through his and Stranger's Paling Trax label that surfaced in 2015 with raw overdrived tools for dark basements. With his unique, acidic and uncompromising sound he hold down several intense club nights throughout the country. With playing a broad mixture of Chicago House and Detroit Techno, lots of raw acid 90's cuts, adding EBM, Wave, Electro and Industrial excursions in his musical vision he definitely doesn't have a linear perspective in his DJ sets. Nowadays he's a staff member at Clone Records where he also started his new label project Rotterdam Electronix and more recent the Fusion of Thought imprint to release pure dancefloor Techno cuts, with a wide array of new artists. This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the whole thing and much more besides, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod Earlier this month UNESCO added Berlin techno to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a register to recoginize and safeguard important traditions, practices and expressions. This news was met with consternation from music fans over how this honour completely overlooked the birthplace of techno, Detroit. For this patrons-only episode, Jeremy and Tim react to the news by pulling out a dozen or so of their favourite Detroit techno cuts to discuss. We hear about the ‘Belville Three', post-Fordism, Alvin Tofler and the relationship between Chicago and Motor City. The guys dwell on the aesthetic of coldness and futurity that characterised much of the Detroit sound, folding in the Panthers, jazz and unidentified flying objects into records from Underground Resistance, Carl Craig, Drexciya and Theo Parish. Plus, we hear one of the first records Jeremy ever bought, memories of squat parties past, and a de rigour David Mancuso cameo. JGarrett is the primary music project from Vancouver-based musician and producer Josh Garrett. A native of Ann Arbor, MI, with deep family roots in Detroit, Josh came to techno and house within the shadow of the Motor City and with direct involvement in the Detroit techno and rave communities of the ‘90s. In 2000, Josh relocated to Vancouver and over the years has become an integral member of the Vancouver techno community, from running the well-respected label Subspec Music as well as a key member of the Proper Event Productions crew. JGarrett original and remix material has appeared on Perc Trax, Gobsmacked, Dirty Minds, Advanced (Black), Smashead, SubSensory, and many other labels. Josh has a foot in Detroit and industrial techno camps and his varied and open approach to his sound has won support across the techno continuum... receiving play from notable artists such as Dax J, Perc, Electric Indigo, Rebekah, Dave Clarke, Mørbeck, among others. JGarrett's performances generally focus on his ever-evolving live p.a., which is based around creating on-the-fly reworks and recombinations of his studio material wherein no set list is ever repeated. Active since 1995. Founder of Xynthetic Netlabel and Subspec Music. In addition to producing and performing music, Josh is an Abelton certified trainer and provides one on one tutoring for people interested in learning Ableton or improving their use of it. Recorded on April 31, 2022, this episode focuses on the 1995 album “Landcruising” / 2005 reissue “The Album Formerly Known As…” by Carl Craig, a titan of the Detroit techno scene. This episode marks the second in a two-part series centering on Detroit, Michigan as a musical and cultural hub—from Motown to Movement.
This week's show covers new music from Ghent's Bolis Pupul, Aix-en-Provence's Melody's Echo Chamber, London's Sault, and Oakland's Hazel English. For the archive pick this week, Brendan went back to 1989 for the debut single from Inner City, the duo of Kevin Saunderson and Paris Grey. Saunderson is, of course, one of the legendary Belleville Three, the originators of Detroit Techno, a still-vibrant and enduring sound that created a parallel to Chicago's house music. Even 33 years later, techno and house are dominant styles of club music which are played all around the world. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music in there, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!

We are honoured to have a true legend joining our mixtape series: @djbone
In this episode I'm talking to Award Winning TV, Film and Theatre composer and sound designer Isobel Waller-Bridge. In this episode of Sync Music Matters Isobel reveals how she finds musical inspiration in anything but music. In fact when talking about inspiration, she references people like Francis Bacon, Tilda Swinton and Anne Carson. But Isobel also shares her love for composers like Ennio Moriccone, Danny Elfman, Gustav Mahler and Wendy Carlos amongst others. We also dig into the prevalence of drone based music in modern film score and her love for it... as well as Detroit Techno. We go under the skin with her work on the Netflix series Munich: The Edge of War as well as her recent project with the Philharmonia as part of their climate change season. We also talk about her electronic score for Vita and Virginia and how the instructions from director Chanya Button were “lazers and no piano!” Isobel Waller-Bridge Credits Isobel Waller-Bridge's recent TV soundtracks include, Emma, Black Mirror - Rachel Jack and Ashley Too, Vanity Fair, Vita & Virginia, The Split and Fleabag. And recent theatre credits include Woyzeck at the Old Vic and Knives in Hens at the Donmar Warehouse Isobel's eclectic scores move seamlessly between sweeping orchestral and analogue electronica, often blurring the lines between music and sound design. In this week's episode, we celebrate Black History Month! I talk about the roots of electronic dance music (EDM) and how they tie back to African American roots. We discuss the origins founders of House music, Techno, and Dubstep that were all created by black men. Dj Frankie Knuckles, DJ, Ron Hardy, and Larry Levan created the genre house music in the 1970s. The Belleville Three is a group credited with inventing the musical style known as Detroit Techno. The group consists of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. Digital Mystikz started the genre dubstep as a duo consisting of Mala (Mark Lawrence) and Coki ( Dean Harris) from South London.
