It's not too often that a story will make a connection between Linda McCartney, The Beastie Boys and The Clash, but this month's film does just that. Welcome to episode 126 of See Hear Podcast. When the average person is asked to name a single important figure in reggae music, they'll most likely say Bob Marley. Without taking away from his importance, reggae's production giant, who helped Marley in his early years, was Lee “Scratch” Perry. For this episode, we look at a 2008 documentary called The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry. He was born in a rural area of Jamaica, but after working on a job to build a road in the western region of the island, he claimed to have found a connection between the sound of the rocks he helped move and the sound of music – sure beats the usual musician story of stealing their sibling's record collection. The film certainly tells a story, but is also more of a character study about Perry. He was a musical innovator being an early innovator in dub reggae. He'd recorded and produced music that was ska and rocksteady reggae, but it's his experiments in dub he's most remembered for. He's also remembered for burning down his beloved music studio because a rubber ball placed on his console had been moved – okay, the story's a little more complex than that. Was he eccentric? Was he a charlatan? Was he really named Pipecock Jackson, and looking to become American president? The film only looks to Perry for discussion, so without other talking heads, we ask if he's a reliable narrator. Kerry, Tim and I discuss Rastafarianism, the link to Sun Ra, sound systems, our connections to reggae music, and the scary connection to Dennis Wilson. Please join us for a fun conversation. You can find the film on Kanopy, but our conversation can be listened to independent of the film. Those of us who survived the 60s did have one invaluable take-away ... culture follows music. While powerful anti-establishment lyrics did temporarily redirect the war industry, so we thought, those tumultuous times we're orchestrated to plant insidious seeds for a larger psyop that would later reveal itself. On this Alfacast we have a delightful musical talent making waves through music, but with eyes wide open. Grant ‘Prezence' Ellman is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Sedona, Arizona. His 2021 truth-bomb dismantling the SCAM of “covid” and “government” was censored from Spotify within a week of release. Prezence is fiercely devoted to his mission of spreading TRUTH, FREEDOM and LOVE through radio ready records, vivid videos and lucid live performances. His studio work is completely self-produced, mixed, mastered, shot, edited and promoted, with a true DIY ethos and work ethic. On stage, Prezence captivates audiences by live looping multiple instruments, singing soulful vocals & live mixing — "dubbing" his loops. His innovative Ableton Live rig pays homage to dub pioneers King Tubby & Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as modern dub masters Umberto Echo and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred. With heavy inspiration from the modern reggae of Midnite, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Grant weaves elements of funk, jazz and rock into a sonic tapestry that is uniquely, and undeniably, Prezence. In just one false election cycle, he's released three albums worth of singles, videos to boot. His empowering energy has graced main stages at Rise & Vibes, Unison, Music & Sky, Totality, Viva Iriezona, Anarchapulco, The Greater Reset, where he's supported the likes of Steel Pulse, Tribal Seeds, Kabaka Pyramid, The Elovaters, The Movement, Mike Love and Dub FX — just to name a few. Prezence is grateful to have found his life's purpose making music and sharing that gift with others. Please join this episode as we have an insightful discussion on the present state of our world, and if we're lucky, Prezence just may entertain us with an inspiring tune. Extrait : « … Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

Graeme Thomson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://omnibuspress.com/products/small-hours-the-long-night-of-john-martyn Small Hours is an intimate, unflinching biography of one of the great maverick artists. Though Martyn never had a hit single, his extraordinary voice, innovative guitar playing and profoundly soulful songs secured his status as a much admired pioneer. Covered by Eric Clapton, revered by Lee Scratch Perry, produced by Phil Collins, Martyn influenced several generations of musicians, but beneath the songs lay a complicated and volatile personality. He lived his life the same way he made music: improvising as he went; scattering brilliance, beauty, rage and destruction in his wake. Drawing on almost 100 new interviews, Small Hours is a raw and utterly gripping account of sixty years of daredevil creativity, soaring highs and sometimes unconscionable lows.
In this bonus episode, Greg adds a song to the Desert Island Jukebox in honor of Bob Marley and Lee "Scratch" Perry's bass player, Aston "Family Man" Barrett.Join our Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3sivr9TBecome a member on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3slWZvcSign up for our newsletter: https://bit.ly/3eEvRnGMake a donation via PayPal: https://bit.ly/3dmt9lUSend us a Voice Memo: Desktop: bit.ly/2RyD5Ah Mobile: sayhi.chat/soundopsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Incoming transmission from Hopeton Overton Brown, better known as Scientist. As a protege of dub pioneer King Tubby, Scientist represents dub's third generation—at least that's how his 1981 collaboration with Tubby and Prince Jammy, First Second, and Third Generation, puts it. Originating in Kingston, Hopeton earned his nickname from Bunny Lee due to his highly complex mixing skills, who famously opined, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist.” These days he's living in Los Angeles, where he joined host Jason P. Woodbury for this all-new episode. Prepare to cover a lot of ground, as we move from his origins at Channel One and Tuff Gong to divine messages, run-ins with Lee "Scratch" Perry, aliens and angels, simulation theory, his suspicions about modern cannabis strains, the digital vs analog debate, and much more. Already in 2024 we have seen a slew of amazing Dub tracks being released. This is a continuous mixtape weaving together the classic foundation and the new excitement. Mexican Institute Of Sound's newest single (with Ceci Bastida) release is Stop! It accompanies an amazing album of career retrospective oro. Camilo Lara's music is always perfecto and he is an artist I play more than most on my radio shows. Black Grape are back with a new album Pumpkin Head, and in my opinion it's the best one since Isn't It Great…And this record is great and more. It's filled with slow burning dub sounds that are almost torch song ballads - and the emotional intelligence is more than we could have hoped for from a long term functioning twisted melon. It's bloody fantastic. Also featuring Panda Bear, Sonic Boom, Adrian Sherwood, MU, Kassa Overall, Andrae Murchison, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Manu Chao, LKJ, Dennis Bovell, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Johnny Clarke, King Tubby, Sly & Robbie and loads more! This show was first broadcast on the 2nd of February, 2024For more info and tracklisting, visit: https://thefaceradio.com/matt-pape-mixtape/Tune into new broadcasts of Matt Pape Mixtape, Friday from 12 - 1 AM EST / 5 - 6 AM GMT.Dig this show? Sometimes life comes full circle. In this episode of For Songs, I welcome back Louisiana-based singer/songwriter Louis Michot of the traditional Cajun band the Lost Bayou Ramblers. Louis first appeared on the show in Fall 2020, at the height of the pandemic. He didn't know it at the time but he was in the midst of writing and recording his first solo album. Three years later, Louis has just released Reve du Troubadour, which is Cajun French for Troubadour's Dream (https://www.louismichot.com/). In this episode, Louis discusses how those eerie first few months of the pandemic resulted in creative output that even surprised him. Although the album is entirely sung in Cajun French, the songs span a much wider range. You'll hear Lee “Scratch” Perry. You'll hear the Pogues, you'll hear classical music. You'll hear…well, you get the point. In addition the music, you're also going to learn something. Louis is as much of a historian as he is a musician, and some of his songs will make you uncomfortable. Learning about the past can be difficult, but that's the point. So sit back and listen as Louis takes us through Reve du Troubadour (https://louismichot.bandcamp.com/album/r-ve-du-troubadour).

Pachyman - "Trago Coqueto," a 2023 single on ATO Records L.A.-based artist Pachy García — who records as Pachyman — reflects on his homeland of Puerto Rico on today's Song of the Day. “It's like a stream of consciousness,” he tells Remezcla. “I wanted to play with the idea of being a bartender, the profession of getting people drunk, and my constant dilemma about returning home – which I am still not ready to do. It's about grappling with the emotions of my daily life in a casual yet poetic manner.” You can find the track on his new LP, Switched-On, which comes out tomorrow, Friday, September 29th, via ATO Records. The album is a dub-filled delight, and was even recorded on the same model of mixing board that Lee “Scratch” Perry used in his Kingston studio. This weekend, with Nishimura making its only showing near earth for the next 400 years, we thought it was high time to head to space once again and turn on the anti-gravity machine this Friday night. Big bops and lay low go slow swerve here from classic names like Lee "Scratch" Perry and Peter Tosh (not to mention Bob Marley), along with some more modern names in the dubby game like Luke Vibert, Submerse, and Khruangbin. This week in Bass Candy we have a reggae special. Almost in a chronological way, Tropico Beats starts with Coxsone and Studio One 7” records before paying tribute to perhaps one of his favorite artists ever, the great Bob Marley. For those of you who don't know, our host started his career as a vinyl Dj collecting Jamaican 45 rpm records he bought in the many record stores around NYC. Then comes the dub, some B sides and versions, including the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry's ‘Dub in Peace' and the likes of Mad Professor and Lone Ranger. After playing some contemporary reggae music, and going into the Dancehall era, Tropico closes the special with Reggae's brother in arms, punk rock, with a live classic from Queens very own, The Ramones.Tune into new broadcasts of Bass Candy, LIVE, 3rd Friday from 6 - 8 PM EST 11 - 1 AM GMT. Part of the music industry for nearly 50 years, Kevin Metcalfe takes a break from enjoying his recent retirement to join me on this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast.Kevin is an industry legend. A sound mastering engineer with an impressive repertoire of all kinds of artists and all types of musical styles under his belt. This fella has played a key role on hundreds, if not thousands, of singles and album releases over the years including David Bowie, Adele, U2, Queen, ELO, Depeche Mode, Pulp, Simply Red, The Who, Brian Eno, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mark Stewart, Adrian Sherwood and more…This is one of those episodes where we hear the connections to Paul Weller ( he mastered Illumination, Studio 150, As Is Now and Catch-Flame) but also plenty of tales from a career that started in 1973, as a 20 year old cutting discs with cassettes and 8-track at RCA…He soon moved to Delane Lea / CTS Studios at Wembley ( or The Music Centre as it came to be known) - where they scored the Bond movies and the world's great reggae artists who'd pop in straight off the plane from Jamaica. It was at Utopia Studios from 1979 to 1983 that he really built his reputation as a sound and engineering mastering expert. Kevin worked with Roxy Music, Duran Duran, Ultravox and Japan. As the punk scene took off, Kevin worked with The Clash, Siouxsie Soux and more…Kevin got asked to join Virgin Records in 1982 (which later became part of EMI) and ended up staying for 15 years. He then went on to create his own company Soundmasters UK in 1997, which led to the work with Paul Weller, along with Adele, Damon Albarn, Can, Gary Clail (another personal favourite), Orbital, African Headcharge…We also have a few other PW connections with former podcast guests - Nick Heyward, Kathryn Williams and The Zombies!.
