Dennis is joined via Zoom by writer for Part 2 of their conversation about Paul's new novel What Is Wrong With You? as well as his previous novel Farrell Covington and the Limits of Style, both of which offer readers sides of Rudnick they haven't seen before. In Part 2, Paul talks about the raw rage and freedom he felt while writing Farrell alone in a room during the pandemic, the lost gay Koch brother who loosely inspired the book and his early 20's club days in NYC, dancing the night away at Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, both of which are featured in Farrell. He also talks about why enjoys posting on Twitter, the post he wrote that went the most viral and why he can't resist cracking wise about MAGA gals Lara Trump, MTG, Kari Lake and Kristi Noem. He also recalls making Coastal Elites for HBO during lookdown with actors like Bette Midler and Sarah Paulson performing over Zoom in their own homes. Other topics include: the odd jobs he worked when he first came to NYC, how he's kept going through all of the ups and downs of a creative career, making deals with God to get laughs from the audience during his early playwrighting days and how his premier magazine alter ego Libby Gelman-Waxner once fielded a sincere marriage proposal from a besotted reader. Send us a textIn this captivating first installment of our two-part conversation, Ian shares his remarkable coming-of-age story: from his teenage years in South London's vibrant soul scene of the 1970s to living in New York from 1980 to 1983, concluding as he departs for Ibiza in 1984.Ian St Paul stands as a genuine pioneer of London's underground music scene. Raised on the Roundshaw Estate in South London, he discovered soul records at age 13, igniting a lifelong passion for music. He quickly became a fixture at iconic London soul venues like Crackers and the Lacy Lady, absorbing the vibrant club culture of the era. At just 15, Ian embarked on an extraordinary journey to New York City with friend Paul Oakenfold, immersing himself in the legendary club scene that would later profoundly influence UK dance music. Upon returning to London, he founded "Candy Box," a youth club that hosted early performances by then-unknown DJs including Giles Peterson and Oakenfold. Ian's influence expanded when he moved to Ibiza in 1984, diving deep into the island's emerging club culture alongside his DJ cousin Trevor Fung. His pivotal moment came in 1987 when Oakenfold visited him in Ibiza with fellow DJs; Ian introduced them to the island's revolutionary party scene, taking them to Amnesia and exposing them to the nascent ecstasy culture. In 1988, Ian returned to London where he promoted the legendary Acid House nights Future and Spectrum—events that kickstarted the UK's acid house revolution. His journey continued into the 90s when he relocated to Goa, India, where he managed trance music pioneers Juno Reactor.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. When musician ARTHUR RUSSELL died in 1992, at age 40, of complications related to HIV-AIDS, he was an obscure figure — though a legend in the 70s and 80s underground music scenes at downtown New York clubs such as The Loft and Paradise Garage.  RICHARD KING, author of 'Travels Over Feeling'(Faber) a poignant and evocative visual chronology of Arthur's life and times, came to the the Bureau to tell us about him and why he matters. Despite his prodigious output, his inability to finish songs, and the genre-busting uniqueness of much of his music, meant that he released only two albums under his own name in his lifetime. But in the decades since his death, a series of posthumous releases have generated a deep love and admiration in many who have been lucky to come across his music.   We also get into indie record shop culture, music sobbery, the underground New York club scene of  the mid seventies and ask the question: 'How do you know when, a song, a book or a piece of art is finished?' Thanks to Dan Papps at Faber, to Steve Knutson of Audika Records and Cat Corrigan of Beggars Banquet who have posthumously released much of Arthur's unpublished work, for permission to include his music. For the Seventh episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guests Chez Damier & Alton Miller, representing stories from Detroit. This episode is a special feature on the history and background of the iconic and foundational Detroit nightclub: The Music Institute.“ The Music Institute, a Black-owned club in the heart of downtown Detroit, emerged as a pivotal player in the rise of the city's Dance Music and Youth Culture. For a fleeting 18 months, The Music Institute was more than just a club. It became a creative sanctuary for pioneering artists, and a host of influential DJs and producers. They didn't just play music; they created a revolutionary movement that echoed far beyond Detroit's borders. Today, the legacy of The Music Institute is not just a memory of Detroit; it's a chapter in the history of Dance Music worldwide. This club didn't just witness history; it made it, securing its place in it's evolution and in it's cultural fabric”“Tucked away in Detroit's vibrant heart, The Music Institute has earned its place as a cornerstone in the history of dance and electronic music. Founded in the late 1980s by Detroit's own George Baker and Alton Miller, along with Chicago's Anthony Pearson, better known as Chez Damier, this iconic venue quickly rose to prominence as a hub of musical innovation during one of the most difficult economic times in Detroit's history. The Music Institute wasn't just another club; it emerged due to the economic climate, the struggles and was where artists and music lovers gathered to forge a sound and a culture that would leave its mark on music worldwide. It was Detroit's answer to the legendary house and disco clubs of its era, like New York's Paradise Garage, Chicago's Music Box, and Toronto's Twilight Zone. The club stood as a beacon of creative energy, a place where collaboration, expression, diversity and creativity flourished. Operating from midnight to the early hours, with a members-only policy and a strict no alcohol and drugs rule, the club set the stage for many of dance and electronic music's most influential DJs and artists. It was more than a club; it was a movement, leaving an indelible impact on the world of music”Support the Show.

American artist Introspekt (@sageintrospekt) has a sound rooted in the darker side of UKG but comes at it from a unique perspective that incorporates elements of US garage and ballroom. The LA-born, NYC-based talent has now made her mark in Europe as a DJ and a producer on labels like Eris Drew and Octo Octa's T4T LUV NRG. Her style blends heavy basslines, diva vocals and well-crafted broken beats into something that harks back to the sounds that once came out of the likes of Paradise Garage and Club Zanzibar, always with a focus on bringing up her own community. She says that the idea behind this week's mix was "to take the listener on a journey through tech-garage sonics and intergalactic dancehall rhythms." Tracks of her own and those from Skream, Holloway, Hatcha, Phuturistix and many more all plot a line through earth-shatteringly heavy rhythms from across the past, present and future of garage, dubstep and bass. It's a mix aimed at both body and head from this formidable talent and is a great taste of what to expect from her when she plays Dekmantel Festival later in the year.

Raised in a working-class family in a wealthy part of Connecticut, he often felt displaced as a child, eventually moving to a disused factory space to make music before finally relocating to New York and trying his hand at being a DJ. In this interview, Moby reflects on the early days of his time in New York. Rejected from all the record labels he sent his demos to, he felt like an outsider, choosing to frequent clubs like The Loft and Paradise Garage before finally becoming a resident DJ at the now-defunct club Mars. "Art and music are the same, they're just different dialects." The Chicago house music legend talks about co-curating the photo exhibit Walk The Night and nightlife's '90s heyday. Ron Trent grew up in Chicago, where he dreamed of being a musician from a young age. He would end up becoming one of the architects of the Chicago house sound and working alongside contemporaries like Chez Damier, and across the pond, Basic Channel. His label, Prescription Records, became a renowned purveyor of the deep house sound. He spread his vision from the American Midwest to New York, Europe and beyond. In this talk recorded live at Miami Art Week, Trent talks to Resident Advisor music critic Kiana Mickles about the songs and dance floors that shaped him in this early part of his musical trajectory. In addition to playing some of his favourite jazz, funk and disco songs, he reflects on clubs like Studio 54, Paradise Garage and The Warehouse, which he claims matured him as an artist and irrevocably shaped the trajectory of club culture. Trent was instrumental in co-curating an exhibit called Walk The Night (which premiered at this multidisciplinary event), a photographic homage to these spaces and other historic clubs around the world. TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ ROBERT COLEMAN (RLA AUDIO) # 125 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA Robert Coleman, a Sound Technician, Seamster, and a man of many talents worked for one of the greatest sound installation companies owned by the late sound designer Richard Long out of New York City. RLA & Associates helped change and create the soundscape of what was to become the new benchmark in New York City and the world. RLA became the leaders of "The Heavy Disco Sound" and set the mark with two main clubs as there testing ground and lab. One being the Paradise Garage, who's DJ Larry Levan helped Richard as well with modifications and designs of the speakers and the other famous club Studio 54 which both opened in the year of 1977. Richard Long's sound company known as RLA went on to do many big installations around the world, won many awards for its devastating mammoth look and of course Hi Fidelity sound that became synonymous with nightclub owners and its patrons. People would say when you experience an RLA sound system, its "Bass in your Face", "Highs in your Eyes" with the use of Bertha Bass Boxes with The Levan Extensions and JBL Bullets Tweeters Flying in the Chrome Z-Array's. Robert will give us the inside history of all the day to day from that momentous time through this interview. We are so humbled to be able to bring someone of his caliber here on True House Stories that can share the Richard Long Story. ♫ SUBSCRIBE TRUE HOUSE STORIES® NEWSLETTER: ✚ https://truehousestories.com/subscribe-newsletter

This is a tribute mix ( Non Perfecto) and was a live mix at a disco PG gig ..The sound system bass bounced the Beats with a delayed reverb effect so there were a few slightly off rythm beats from the recorded version.. It sounds better live and i loved being given the opportunity to spin some PG Classics for a 45 min set. Thanks as Always for the love and Continued listenship. Much Love Marky P x

Masters At Work, Todd Terry, David Morales, Murk, Blaze,Basement Boys, 重要厂牌有 Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, 8ball, irma, 重要人物 DJ Larry Levan,DJ Tony Humphries, Wayne Gardiner (aka Logic aka Classic Man), 特点是低频过滤的 organ;被认为是 UK Garage 教父的 Grant Nelson 于 1993 年成立厂牌 Nice ‘n' Ripe,是最早在英国开始制作 Garage House 的DJ 之一,他加入英国舞曲特有的 breakbeat ,突出鼓和低音部分,UKG 开始形成,还有一位新泽西 DJ Todd Edwards 在英国也是重要先驱;1996 年左右开始出现 Speed Garage,英国的低音特色影响更加明显,Garage 在俱乐部场景中不再小众,以白标唱片为载体的 UKG 开始出现在主流电台;我最爱的 UKG 时期,2000 年代左右的 2 Step 更加 R&B,在全球范围内产生影响至今,我们最爱的女孩团体 Mis-Teeq 贡献出两张元素丰富的佳作;千禧年的美国 R&B 也有很多 2 Step 元素,同时期 UKG 对澳大利亚和日本也有巨大影响,老林推荐的 m-flo “Expo Expo”(2001) 是非常典型的 UKG 2 Step,同时还有独特的 J-pop 风格;2 Step 开始加上MC 的 rhyme ,重要代表是 So Solid Crew,在主流 UK chart 上成绩亮眼;2000 初 Grime 开始形成, 相比 UKG+MC的形式,Grime的出现是独树一帜的,再次表达对 Dizzee Rascal 的崇拜;UKG 持续影响产生的 Dubstep,是最容易被误解的一种风格,与 Grime 平行发展,推荐厂牌 Tempa Recordings,代表音乐人 Digital Mystikz, Burial;2000s 后期出现了一种新的类型 UK Funky ,融合了非洲节奏,拉丁音乐,加勒比音乐元素,但这个解释对于我们来说仍然比较模糊,所以我们反推定义这种风格主要特征是,既不是 Grime 也不是蹬腿儿 2 Step,有 reggaeton  且更偏 house;2020 开始,2 Step 的回潮或许能为当下音乐趋势带来新的思路,再次回顾千禧年代的流行乐,我们需要给予UKG 更多的关注和赞美,真是个好时代,我爱千禧年。Playlist:Sweet Female Attitude – “Flowers”Logic – “The Warning (Inner Mix) “Grant Nelson – “Loosen Up (Dirty Dub Mix)”Mis-Teeq – “That Type of Girl”m-flo – “come again”So Solid Crew – “They Don't Know”Digital Mystikz – “Anti War Dub”Kyla – “Do you Mind” (Crazy Cousinz Remix)Artful Dodger – “Movin Too Fast”老林的UKG歌单 必读文章:UK Garage History & Family Tree: 20 Years of UKG! by: Lexis & Dr.LoveNice ‘N' Ripe: The rise and fall of the legendary UK garage label推荐 YouTube 频道: BearingUKBoiler Room UKG 特别专题 给主播写信:sonicelsa@gmail.comNewsletter & 播客订阅 hidesssss.substack.com This is a public episode. Embark on a transatlantic journey through time as special guest Jonathan Gal, the voice of recaps (Episodes 5-13), joins Amy in a captivating conversation. They navigate personal anxieties, delve into historical movements, and reflect on the enduring Jewish experience of being "on the run" from oppression for millennia.Jonathan candidly shares his fears, as a father, husband and resident of an agricultural community along Israel's central-North coast, delving into the complexities of applying for a gun license. He shares perspective gained from a character in Paul Auster's novel 4 3 2 1 and wisdom imparted by his son: “If you're going to run from a bully, you're going to run forever.”Comforted by the notion that interesting questions don't have simple answers, Amy faces the dread of a grim future sealed by the present. She offers an alternative trajectory by way of New York City's storied past, drawing inspiration from Ken Burns' documentaries.  Amy dismantles illusions that the city has always been a haven like Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, reflecting on its wild ride – from interracial strife and massive public works projects to bankruptcy and 9/11.  Railing against our tendency to take things for granted, she explores the fragility and resilience, multicultural, diverse, and tolerant metropolis, acknowledging how easily it almost didn't come to pass.Acknowledging that there's “nowhere to run to baby, nowhere to hide,” and bolstered by Jonathan's son's wisdom, they affirm their decision not to run anymore and stand their ground. Recorded on October 24 (Day 18).Thanks for tuning in!

Love is the Message: Dance, Music and Counterculture

In this episode Jeremy and Tim are checking in to Nicky Siano's downtown spot The Gallery, a legendary party space often uttered in the same breath as the Loft, the Paradise Garage and the Warehouse. Nicky was a highly influential and original DJ who had as much as influence on Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles as David Mancuso. We hear a history of the Gallery, setting it within the complex web of 70s Soho, including the temporary closure of the space and its triumphant reopening. The show covers how party spaces were regulated, the regulatory regimes of dancing more generally across time, and the tension that the requirement to promote oneself as a freelancer DJ put on the emergent ethos of the scene. Tim and Jeremy also talk about Studio 54, drugs, the role of lighting in a party setting, and the place of women - and especially women DJs - in downtown party culture. Finally, all this is contrasted repeatedly with what David Mancuso was doing simultaneously as his Loft night moved venues. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! Wow wow wow.. After last weeks show with over 500 plays and downloads in the the Disco chart and one of the ONLY Radio shows up against Just Mixtapes i'm grateful for the love and listenership.. Unfortunately someone decided to report my radio show and it was removed from the listing for one reason or another so I will not be publicising a show in the disco chart anymore even though it's more disco than most of the shows. Wow we had some Paradise Gems in the Program celebrating 43 years since the PG opened its doors.. I hope you enjoy them as much as i did playing them.. I Love you all... This show is always delivered with Love and Passion.. As always Presented with Love.     I have been a casual fan of Manuel Gottsching for a long time but I never really dug into his discography until the last few days with the news of his passing. I don't have time to write much about him so I'll cut & paste a few things from Pitchfork. "Manuel Gottsching, the Ash Ra Tempel bandleader who went on to compose the electronic cornerstone album E2-E4, died last Sunday (December 4). Göttsching made his name in the West Berlin underground scene in the late 1960s and early '70s. He was a core member of Ash Ra Tempel, a krautrock linchpin with revolving members including Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schulze. The loose, shapeshifting outfit released five influential albums between 1971 and 1973. Göttsching's solo debut, 1975's Inventions for Electric Guitar, was subtitled Ash Ra Tempel VI; from then on he mostly produced records under his own name or as Ashra, such as the 1976 classic New Age of Earth. In 1981, after a visit to Schulze, Göttsching improvised the composition that became known as E2-E4, hoping to throw together some listening material for an imminent trip. That mysteriously perfect hourlong exercise, which combined Prophet 10 synth pulses with waves of electronic percussion and electric guitar, came to define his post-krautrock output. After composing the track, Göttsching later recalled, the billionaire and Virgin Records owner Richard Branson invited him to his houseboat and, upon hearing the track, advised Göttsching that it could make him a fortune. But Göttsching decided to release the full improvisation on his friend Schulze's label, without overdubs, in 1984, and it appeared to have little impact. Though E2-E4 sold poorly, it had—unbeknownst to Göttsching—made its way across the Atlantic and into Larry Levan's Paradise Garage sets, as well as the collections of key electronic music innovators. As Pitchfork's Mark Richardson wrote in a 2016 review, the improvisation “wound its way across the world, morphing and changing with formats and remixes, finding new contexts, a music that is constantly in the process of becoming.” It was a nice trip through Gottsching's music making this mix. I hope he is improvising with his buddy Klaus somewhere. Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Ash Ra Tempel - Traummaschine (Ash Ra Tempel 1971) 11:37    Manuel Göttsching(Ash Ra Tempel VI) - Echo Waves (Inventions for Electric Guitar 1975) 24:35    Ashra - Slightly Delayed (Blackouts 1977) 30:55    Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4 (E2-E4 1984) 47:00    Ashra - Deep Distance (New Age Of Earth 1976) 52:12    Manuel Göttsching - Halensee(Excerpt) (The Best Of The Private Tapes 1998) 58:24    Manuell Göttsching(Ash Ra Tempel VI) - Quasarsphere (Inventions for Electric Guitar 1975) 64:52    end

We are so excited to share this new season with you. Keeping you company through the Winter!!!We would love to hear your feedback: https://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix/2/p703696360272.aspx?l=9&src=1&HQLType=6&foreignID=%5BID%5DStarting his career 3 decades ago at an age too young to mention, Fat Tony has had his say in paving the way for the UK's current music scene. Early on he won residencies for Trade at Turnmills, Egg and Limelight while also making his mark in New York holding a weekly show at The Palladium for Steve Rubell during the height of Paradise Garage. He has also graced the main floor of Privilege Ibiza, Space, Amnesia and DC10. A regular at Ministry of Sound and Glitterbox, Tony has already in this short season of 2021 played Defected Festival in Croatia, One Out & Wilderness Festival and countless other venues with The Warehouse Project and so much more around the corner. As official DJ to the icons like Elton John, Kate Moss and Donatella Versace, he is also one of the fashion scene's go to performers. As one of club culture's most notorious - and best loved - figures, Tony is a complete force of nature. In his recent book I Don't Take Requests, he tells the most extraordinary stories of depravity and hedonism, of week-long benders and extreme self-destruction - and of recovery, redemption, friendship and the joy of a good tune.'Anyone can get a party started, but no one keeps it going like Fat Tony, the energy never dips andwhat a life he's lived.. He's a tosser but we still love him.' ELTON JOHN & DAVID FURNISHDJ Fat Tony has been described as 'the closest thing that club culture has to a national treasure' and the 'unlikely cult hero of quarantine'. Few people have crammed so many lives into one: when your first line of cocaine is aged 16 with Freddie Mercury, where do you go from there? I Don't Take Requests is Fat Tony's breathtakingly candid and outrageous memoir of a life of extremes. From his childhood on an estate in Battersea where he honed his petty criminality, was abused by an older man and made friends with Boy George, to his teenage years spent parading the Kings Road in his latest (stolen) clobber, working as a receptionist for a prostitute, hanging out with Leigh Bowery and Sue Tilley and creating his drag persona, to his life as DJ to the stars and his spiral into serious drug addiction. Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes.
