I haven't been to an atheist conference for years although there is the upcoming American Atheist conference in Atlanta next April. Funnily enough if that's a word, I have a holiday for Good Friday and I can think of nothing better than using that time off to hang out with fellow heathens. Reggie Beloved raised money to help people in Haiti so when he told me he was going to the Faithless Forum I had to listen. Well, we've had quite the weekend! Speeches, panels, games, and workshops galore at Faithless Forum here in Austin. We just got back and are ready to talk with you: 585-526-8774 or tiny.cc/callSG. NOTE: This is an abbreviated episode which will begin at 12 noon CT and run until 1pm CT. If you would like to get on to chat with us, please call in by 11:45am to get in the line! __________________TIME STAMPS & CALL NOTES 00:00 - Intro - Faithless Forum Recap06:05 - Isaiah (he/him) - SK - Stop Calling My Beliefs a Mental Illness! 16:42 - Brandon (he/him) - NC - How To Argue With Christians About Morality 23:06 - Kevan (he/him) - FL - Biblical Slavery Is Hypocritical!34:06 - Sunny (she/they) - IA - Is Virtual Reality An Ethical Substitute for Real Life? 47:54 - Nick (he/him) - AK - Is It Disrespectful To Not Use Pronouns? 06:05This theist caller would like to see more civil communication between theists and atheists. His example? How atheists are always calling theists mentally ill. Should we stop? What is the harm? Eric and Vi have some thoughts, including how respect for religious people shouldn't necessarily expand to cover bad or harmful ideas. 16:42“Well if you don't believe in God, you can just sin whenever you want!” If that makes you wince, this is the conversation for you. Brandon asks for pointers on debating the morality question with Christians. Eric cautions that most of these arguments fall prey to the ad hominem fallacy, painting atheists as people without moral compasses and therefore untrustworthy. Vi suggests getting the Christian making the claim to be more explicit: what is preventing them from sinning and why? How does that structure differ between us? 23:06Isn't it hypocritical that as soon as the Hebrews were set free from Egypt, they started writing laws about how to own slaves? Kevan wants to know how Christians square this contradiction in moral messaging in Exodus. Eric and Vi caution against framing Exodus as a moral text at all, rather looking at it through a historical lens. 34:06 This is a very interesting call, one that poses a new question we've never heard before. Is virtual reality inherently less valuable than actual experiences? What are the ethics of choosing a virtual life over one lived in the outside world? Is Mark Zuckerberg the antichrist? If you enjoy a sci-fi discussion, you'll like this thought experiment! 47:54Nick has a friend who has come out as trans. He asked if it's OK to use his friend's name instead of pronouns while he gets used to the change. Vi encourages openness and honesty here: tell your friend what's going on. It's alright to mess up sometimes, as long as you're trying! __________________Skeptic Generation is LIVE every Sunday at 11:30am-1:00pm CTCall on your phone: 585-LA-MURPH (585-526-8774) Call online: https://tiny.cc/callSG Love the show? In an effort to get to the heart of the disagreement, Vi and Eric poke and prod to find Setuf's moral structure, while calling out loaded language and unscientific claims left and right. Can they find common ground… or should they even try? (And yes, the caller's name IS an acronym for “fetus.”) Watch Setuf's first call into Skeptic Generation: https://youtu.be/F4fsFdVZFxs 45:37 Student Doctor Ben calls in to address some of the recent calls around abortion and why we're looking at the issue wrong. Required viewing for anyone frustrated by the abortion calls being had recently! Check out more Student Doctor Ben here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKti4xis1ZJ2FQFAuDQ1kpg 58:45Joe is a theist who wants to know why atheists tend to reduce the big questions to cold scientific facts rather than engage with emotion. Vi points out that emotion has often been used against atheists, so we often overcorrect to avoid falling for bad arguments. That said, there is room to grow, and we shouldn't be afraid of expressing emotion (as long as our interlocutors are honest). 1:13:31 What do the hosts think of the death penalty, and how does that play into skepticism? It's difficult to approach such intense topics with rationality, but Vi and Eric point out the various flaws (both philosophical and practical) with capital punishment. What an intense way to end the show this week! We'll be meeting in Austin, Texas from November 19th-21st, so come out and join us! And yes, vaccines are required for entry. Check out more at https://faithlessforum.com/. 07:02 How do you answer apologists who claim there must be a beginning to the universe? Ansel calls in with a syllogism attempting to rebut this theological claim. Vi and Eric, however, are less than impressed. Eric has many questions about the soundness of the premises themselves, and Vi points out that playing the “chicken or egg” game with apologists is already ceding too much ground. 24:40 Ken calls in to discuss homeschooling and gender identity, two of Vi's favorite topics. Surprisingly for this show, Ken comes to the table with some thoughtful points, and the hosts spend some time discussing the differences between social constructs and biology, and the value of holding a nuanced perspective when discussing sensitive topics like these. 45:29 God finally calls into the show! And by God, we mean Shane from Utah, who has proclaimed himself god and is calling in to set the record straight. Is this a poe? Is this someone who needs some psychological help? Vi and Eric can't quite tell. What do you think? 1:00:04 The Freemasons require you to believe in a God, and Angelo no longer believes. He's worried about losing his community if he admits this, and has called in for some help. Vi and Eric point out that this is a cost-benefit analysis situation: what does he want more, his community or the freedom to express himself fully? Note: The lower third says that Angelo is from the UK, but that is incorrect. Sorry, Angelo! For anyone struggling to deconvert or worried about coming out as an atheist, check out the Hotline Project run by Recovering from Religion here: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/ 1:14:44 What is “gender euphoria”? Sam, one of our favorite UK theists, calls in to talk about the concept of gender euphoria and whether it is a useful conversation starter when discussing trans issues. Vi agrees, and Eric is enlightened. Does liking how you look in cowboy boots count? Absolutely!

Summary: Kevin is an inquisitive former Catholic who still wears a cross despite identifying as an agnostic atheist. We cover a variety of interesting topics including certainty, openness, free will, and aspects of morality. I'm half-jokingly sub-titling this an "inquisition" because of the rapid-fire questions and constant interruptions that permeate our talk. Kevin is a very bright and confident individual with good dialogue skills that will most likely improve quickly. Thank you, Kevin, for making me think over both of our talks. Can an open-minded person be sure there is no God? Can a person who's sure there's no God still be open-minded? in·qui·si·tion /ˌinkwiˈziSH(ə)n/ noun 1. a period of prolonged and intensive questioning or investigation. Matt and Darrel discuss how religious beliefs impact therapy when therapists bring religion into their practice, and go over Religious Trauma Syndrome.Mary in Minnesota asks what to do about the fact that her friends and family seem to be afraid of hell for her as she faces imminent death from pancreatic cancer. Matt & Darrel offer some useful advice, but the best thing to know from this call is that Mary will be meeting friend of the show Dave Warnock. If you’re interested in a perspective on actively dying as an atheist, please check out Dave Warnock and Dying Out Loud. He eventually gets to dark energy, at which point Matt drops the call because it’s unfortunately likely that this caller is severely misunderstanding dark energy.Rami in France seems to offer a similar sort of proof of God, but his is mathematic rather than scientific. He is hung up on after not allowing hosts to address points of disagreement. Womp, womp.Deepities! Deepities abound! Caller Alex in Maryland uses a LOT of language fluffing to explain the fairly basic concept that a lot of people want good things. He uses this to justify what he calls “meta-theism.”Speaking of friends of the show, Shannon Q is here! We announce as she calls in that she’ll be here to host the show during Faithless Forum, but her question for Dr. Darrel Ray is this: How do we deal with so-called “Christian counseling?” Shannon takes a look at this on her own YouTube channel in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6vDhtBWFtc. (It’s a long one, grab some popcorn! But if you’re into it, subscribe.) Matt hangs up on Shannon with a soundboard button of his own voice. She asked for it. Literally.Matt answers more postcard prayers! We’ve been having calls pop up every now and then recently about Catholic miracles. Tom in Canada wants to ask if the hosts have a natural explanation for Our Lady of Guadalupe.Mike in Vermont gets hung up on pretty quickly. Don’t come on the show to complain about how long you were on hold… It’s quite rude, and you’re not owed our platform. Next.Alex in Australia asks what to do about the fact that he and his wife share different religious views, and how to make sure his wife helps him raise their children secularly. Dr. Darrel Ray provides great answers about honest communication and setting of boundaries. Our final caller, David in Arizona, thinks he can prove God doesn’t exist...with math! He doesn’t. Jen hosts the new ACA reboot show Godless Bitches 3.0! (It’s a lot of fun.) Jen reveals an upcoming personal project where she’ll cover a range of non-atheist topics with other atheists, which sounds pretty neat to me.Dan tells a story of a weird encounter before a job interview wherein someone asks if he’s a Christian...spoiler: the conversation partner isn’t very polite. Also, Jen is verbally assaulted for wearing a symbol someone doesn’t like. How reasonable! She also ends up on a date where the guy tells her he’s afraid she’ll go to hell. Wonderful first date talk, this is bound to go well for him.Dan and Jen get into a discussion on Christian apologetics history and get into a few apologetic arguments. Our first caller, Matt, explains that he thinks the left/right political spectrum isn’t valid and is mostly arbitrary. He may have a point to some extent, but there is a utility to be found here! Matt asks what makes something left or right fundamentally, or are we applying these labels arbitrarily after the fact? Jen gives an explanation of where this comes from, and we get into a conversation about how parties can change their left/right alliance, which happens more frequently than you might think. We cover a lot of ground on this call, including false narratives and the general tone of today’s politics being quite divided.Dan and Jen have a quick talk about NEW TRUTH WANTED MERCH available at bit.ly/aenmerch, and how they struggle with clothes. Adulting is hard sometimes.Caller Ian hooks us in with an “out there” topic: he believes that humans (later clarified to be all living things) all share the same consciousness, because, “How could we not share the same consciousness?” Or, is it the same nature of consciousness? Definitions seem to be an immediate issue...this will be a fun call! After the call, Jen and Dan get into their pasts with Eastern philosophies and “woo.”The amazing Dean Meadows returns to ask how we can navigate consciousness without a belief in the supernatural, as there seems to be something strange about the connection between minds and bodies. Dan explains consciousness having clear physical roots, and we have a springboard for an interesting call. (Dean Meadows is a friend of our shows who studies apologetics and calls into Truth Wanted and Talk Heathen frequently. Check those calls out if you liked this one.)After some brief discussion on telecommunication infrastructure, Jeremy presents a case for an “objective filter for measuring morality from a secular perspective.” Dan sees it as possible to build an objective moral framework, but is interested in what should compel him to follow that (philosophically, of course...Dan won’t be out doing horrible things tomorrow, we promise!). Jeremy thinks religions remove people’s bodily autonomy and sovereignty, but what if someone doesn’t want bodily sovereignty? Hm… This is getting deep.Dan ends the show with a bad joke that leads to fun sound effects with new tech stuff! YAY!Faithless Forum is upcoming, with dates TBA (likely in June).
