Theatre director and writer Robert Icke talks to John Wilson about his formative creative influences. Described by Variety magazine as ‘the great hope of British theatre' and with his radical new versions of classic plays, Icke has built a reputation for revelatory productions. Born in Stockton on Tees in 1986, he made his name in 2015 with an epic new version of the Greek tragedy Oresteia, which he had adapted himself. It won several awards and, at 29, Icke became the youngest ever recipient of the Best Director award at the Olivier Awards. More acclaim followed for his 2017 production of Hamlet, starring Andrew Scott, his adaptation of the Arthur Schnitzler play The Doctor, and his new version of Oedipus which transferred to Broadway in 2025. The living legend David Icke once again appears on the Outer Limits of the Truth. Icke lays out his core thesis that human beings are fragments of an infinite consciousness trapped inside a simulated reality, which he calls the matrix. He argues the true self operates outside this simulation and is constantly trying to reconnect with the entrapped fragment, while a global cult and the non human forces it serves work to block that reunification. According to Icke, this is why the biological body functions as a sophisticated computer running psychological and perceptual programs, and why the elite push so aggressively toward AI human fusion. If artificial intelligence replaces authentic human thought, the dangerous questions (Who am I? Where did I come from? Who runs the world?) never get asked. He frames awakening not as recognizing a political conspiracy, which he considers a shallow layer, but as expanding identity beyond the matrix frequency band so one actually perceives reality from outside the cage. Icke then extends this framework into mass control mechanics and the afterlife. He argues religion, orthodox science, and left versus right politics all function identically: rigid belief systems that fracture the population into compartments so the few can rule the many. He points to COVID as a dry run that woke millions, which then triggered a strategic infiltration of alternative media by voices who redirect attention to politics, Trump, and religion while avoiding the deeper questions. On death, he describes the near death experience tunnel, the light, the elders, and the life review as part of a reincarnation trap, or Wheel of Samsara, engineered to recycle souls back into the simulation through a memory wipe and manufactured guilt. His escape route is simple but demanding: recognize the trap while still embodied, stop fearing judgment from others, and refuse to identify with any of the labels the system hands you. Den Mann fũr Musik und für Schabernack.  Da der aber erst noch mit einer frisierten Mofa und Icke auf dem Sozius vom Comer See ins Müngersdorfer Stadion heizen musste, war vorne Zeit genug, in aller Ruhe all jene Geschenke auszupacken, die uns die Bundesliga am Wochenende auf den Gabentisch gelegt hatte. Die Themen des Tages, sauber vom Stapel gezogen.  Das Ende von Kulttrainer Steffen Baumgart in Köpenick und, eins zum anderen, die erste Frau auf einer Männerbundesligabank. Mit Toren von Rudi und Tränen für Andi. Highlights einer Heldenreise. Körnige Szenen eines ganz großen Sommers. Und am Ende stand der Kaiser wieder allein auf dem Rasen von Rom. Lichtgestalt auf Leinwand. Gänsehosen bis nach Genua. Darüber mussten wir natürlich sprechen. Aber nicht allein. Sondern mit, jetzt Trommelwirbel, Fanfaren, die Nationalhymne und Konfetti: Lothar Matthäus! Il Grande! Mit dem Kapitän, ohne den das alles, der Titel und der Film darüber, gar nicht möglich gewesen wäre. So schwebte er ins Studio, der erste und gleich größte Gast in der Geschichte von FUSSBALL MML. So wurde die Außenalster zum Comer See, plötzlich Sommermärchenstunde. Und natürlich, Ehrensache Erinnerung, ging es dann gleich angemessen um alles. Franz und die Freundschaft, Diego und die heimliche Heim-WM im San Siro. Mailänder Momente. Und ganz nebenbei erzählte uns Lothar, was tatsächlich passiert war. In den Katakomben des Giuseppe Meazza, zwischen Völler und Rijkaard. Oder in Fiumicino, bei drei Flaschen Wein. Und er verriet uns obendrein, wen er alles persönlich zum FC Bayern geholt hat, damals in Hollywood. Dann signierte er sein Tagebuch. Dann flog er weiter nach München, die Erinnerungen im Rollkoffer, Geschichte als Übergepäck. Zurück blieb ein Lächeln. All jenen aber, die jetzt trotzdem wissen möchten, was sonst noch war, in der so genannten Gegenwart, in Dortmund oder Leverkusen, im Kölner Keller oder im Hause Schlotterbeck, legen wir ans Herz, sich doch bitte die ganze Folge zu gönnen.
