Send us a textPLEASE NOTE: EDITING ERRORS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED. This week on Beach Talk with Betsey Newenhuyse, we're reflecting on Memorial Day from Betsey's visit to Ft. Sheridan Cemetery—where memory and meaning converge. We'll share personal thoughts about our dads and how sensational politics and shallow discourse often diminish this solemn day.Betsey brings us a notable message from Pete Buttigieg that cuts through the noise. We dive into the bizarre age obsession—“Biden's old!”—while so many political leaders are aging out. We'll also head down a rabbit trail: Young Earth creationism, QAnon, and my latest Substack post on the Scopes Trial. Anti-science. Anti-expertise. Anti-intellect. The Ark Encounter. The clergy survey. The 1960 film, Inherit the Wind. When faith becomes a box-checking exercise—what's left?I'll touch on Diarmaid MacCulloch's brilliant insights in his history of Christianity and sex. I'll talk about my professor's lecture on the difference between astrology and astronomy—it tells us a lot about Christian Nationalism's current dogma. Finally, we'll confront the attack on universities (hello, Harvard), Jemar Tisby's Roadmap to Ruin, Project 2025, and what it all means for the Church—and for our democracy. We recorded this about a year ago, for the 25th anniversary of the release of THE MATRIX. But since Elon Musk now controls the country, we're republishing an edited-down version because it's important to know how Musk thinks. Next episode, we'll be talking about a number of the other beliefs that shape Musk's worldview, among them Roko's Basilisk, so this episode is good preparation for that conversation. ************************************************************************************ In 2003, Oxford University philosophy professor Nick Bostrom published a paper titled Are You Living in a Computer Simulation, thus giving rise to the modern incarnation of Simulation Theory, which posits that our experienced reality is actually the product of an advanced (possibly future-self) civilization running a simulation experiment. But the paper on might have been written off as a useful thought experiment had it not been for the popularity of the 1999 film The Matrix, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, and its two sequels, which came out the same year as Bostrom's paper. In the years since, Simulation Theory has become a lot of things to a lot of people - from a fun metaphor to explain Cartesian philosophy to college freshmen to an all-out article of faith for an increasingly doctrinaire sub-culture of futurists. In this episode, we discuss the concept of Young Earth Creationism and its complicated and divisive history within the church.
In this enlightening episode, Keith Haney sits down with Dr. Kent Hovind, a passionate advocate for young earth creationism. Dr. Hovind shares his personal journey and the profound influence of his father's advice to “learn everything and be prepared for anything.” He reflects on the mentors who shaped his beliefs, including his pastor and Henry Morris, and underscores the Bible's role as a scientifically accurate source.Dr. Hovind challenges the theory of evolution, describing it as a religion lacking evidence, and discusses the societal impact of creation science evangelism. He delves into the flaws he perceives in evolutionary theory and the precision of creation, arguing that evolution cannot account for the origin of life without time, space, and matter. He questions the randomness of the Big Bang Theory and highlights the complexity and design of living organisms, such as the human cell.Expressing concerns about the direction of AI and the quest to create superhumans, Dr. Hovind sees this as humanity's desire to be like God. He emphasizes the importance of faith and science working together and advocates for keeping evolution out of science books. Dr. Hovind encourages listeners to strengthen their faith, spread the word of God, and start creation ministries in their communities.Join us for a thought-provoking discussion that bridges faith and science, challenging conventional beliefs and inspiring a deeper understanding of creation.

Ben does make reference to some specific scientific ideas in his episode, and in each case there will be links, so please do make use of them when doing your own checking. Before the scientific discoveries of the late 19th century, most adherents of Catholicism and Protestantism believed that the earth and universe were 6000 years old, based on a chronology derived from the Bible. However, after the discovery of the radioactive behavior of atoms, developments in the study of geology, and accurate measurement of star distances provided solid scientific evidence for a universe and earth of an age in the billions of years, Catholic exegetes abandoned the idea that the earth was 6000 years old. Fundamentalist Protestants, however, clung to the idea that this was a teaching of the Bible, and seek to support their thesis by scientific evidence, by which they try to explain away the aforementioned discoveries.Fr. On today's episode of the SSPX Podcast, we continue our discussion from the last episode on Young Earth Creationism. As covered on the last episode, Catholics are not obligated to believe the earth or universe is 6,000 years old; it is not a question of faith. In this episode we examine more closely specific arguments which suggest that young-earth-creationism and geocentricism—a description of the universe that places earth at its center—are parts of the deposit of the Faith. In so doing, Fr. Paul Robinson helps Catholics further distinguish between what the Catholic Church teaches infallibly and scientific views of creation and the world which develop over time in the light of new research.View on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G7a9aHctvv4Support the SSPX Podcast with 1-time or Monthly Donation >>Questions with Father full series: https://sspxpodcast.com/digital-dangers/View all our episodes, including the Crisis in the Church Series >>Subscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here >>SSPX News Website: https://fsspx.news/enVisit the US District website: https://sspx.org/en What is the SSPX Podcast? The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition. Questions from listeners about visions in the Bible, the origin of sin, and whether Young Earth Creationism is an embarrassment.
On today's episode of the SSPX Podcast, we'll dive back into our Questions with Father episodes with a topic we touched on about 6 years ago: Young Earth Creationism. Many Catholics claim that it is doctrinal, and morally necessary to believe that the earth was created in a particular time, or in a particular way. In this episode and a following one to come later, Fr. Paul Robinson will lay out the Catholic perspective on not just this topic, but broadly, what a Catholic should believe in terms of Scripture and Science.View on YouTube: https://youtu.be/MCfWVzZ1nMoSupport the SSPX Podcast with 1-time or Monthly Donation >>Questions with Father full series: https://sspxpodcast.com/digital-dangers/View all our episodes, including the Crisis in the Church Series >>Subscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here >>SSPX News Website: https://fsspx.news/enVisit the US District website: https://sspx.org/en What is the SSPX Podcast? The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition. Arline interviews this week's guest, Andrew. Andrew is a self-named atheist “paleo-nerd.” He grew up home-schooled in a fundamentalist church in southern California. His whole schooling was religious and that included Young Earth Creationism. In high school, Andrew struggled with his shy nature and some depressive episodes. The church didn't seem to have room for people like him. As a young adult, finally making his own decisions and living a life without fundamentalism everywhere, Andrew saw how much he could accomplish on his own. In this video, I'll explain 3 basic theological reasons why Christians who want to take the Bible seriously don't have to believe in Young Earth Creationism. Hi, Neighbor! We want to apologize for the quality of our last episode. It was actually a GREAT conversation, if you were able to decipher it. Today, let's talk a little more about creation! In essentials, unity. In opinions, liberty. And in everything, love. That's all well and good, isn't it? But WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIALS? Most Christians don't care (on the surface) how old the earth is... but we DO care about making sure our kids understand "the essentials." So, if we're being told we MUST read Genesis a particular way in order to raise Christian kids, that will pique our interest. Most mothers are willing to write "24-hours" into their Bibles, if that's what it takes. People are concerned with what affects their DAILY LIFE. In general, they're not impacted by whether God used millions of years to prepare the earth for humans, except that they're being told their kids will leave the faith if they DON'T teach Young Earth Creationism. Later: A Good Man Will Do the Dishes!!! (Listen as we explain why Michael Foster is way more interesting than Ken Ham.) There may be some Christians in reformed circles who are tired of talking about marriage, parenting, and other "basics." But we can't get tired of doing good! There are still many, many, many, many self-identified Christians who haven't learned how to LIVE like Christians, yet. Most of the moms in our home church are still sending their kids to public schools. Many are not even getting married and staying married. Many are still blaming their husbands (who fail to do the dishes) for their unhappiness. When it comes to theology and growing in their walk with Christ--affirming that creation was accomplished in 24-hour days is not even a blip on the radar. Join us for a captivating session with our guest, Hugh Owen, founder of the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. Hugh takes us on a fascinating journey, unearthing the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church on creation, tracing back to the Catechism of Trent, and delving into St. Thomas' concept of the universe's first perfection. As we walk through this spiritual exploration, we unravel God's supernatural work of creation and the profound significance of the Sabbath. This episode also exposes the influence of 17th-century philosopher Descartes and how his philosophy of uniformitarian naturalism has shaped modern thought. We dissect how these ideas have fueled evolutionary thought, highlighting the objections raised by theologians of the time. Prepare to challenge conventional secular wisdom as we delve into Young Earth Creationism and the rejection of evolution, revealing fascinating evidence that suggests humans and dinosaurs shared the Earth. We also navigate the pivotal roles of Vatican Council I and II in shaping Catholic faith teachings and the repercussions of dismissing God's revelation about the world's creation. Discussing evolution's impact on our worldview, we delve into the traditional Catholic doctrine of creation and the absurdity of material processes creating complex coded information without intelligent involvement. So, buckle up, as we embark on this intellectual and spiritual odyssey with Hugh Owen!********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comStore: https://avoiding-babylon.sellfy.store/RSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV: https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee: https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Kyle begins this show by telling the story of his latest impulsive purchase and how it affects the recording of the podcast. Then, the long-anticipated results of the Christian Villain Draft are revealed! And 103 episode into this thing, Kyle comes to a disturbing realization that some people may be doing certain... things while listening to the show. Then, since we're catching up, Kyle updates you on his latest travel adventures where he meets the worst flight attendant he's ever seen. But it's okay, because we got content out of it! Then, we revisit Young Earth Creationism, as we (once again) dive into our series on the beginning of time. To end the show, Kyle revisits a childhood staple, but is met with disappointment that he will for sure have nightmares about!
