Recently, I've been writing a lot about how we fuck up intuition in the West.In my emails, I spoke about a fascinating conversation I had with someone about a retreat they held a few weekends back.The retreat had a focus on intuition, something people here in the West have a tough time with.As we were discussing it, this person told me that outside of the defined "structure" of what was planned to happen, it seemed like everyone attending lacked the ability to be intuitive. They were confused about what to "do," and seemed to want to be "taught" more than anything.They also found themselves unsettled by changes in the schedule, which had to happen because of weather, and things beyond anyone's control.The person leading this retreat has a background in education and spent many years working in that field. To them, the behavior stemming from our standardized education system was as clear as day.Students want to sit down and be taught by a teacher. They will only be taught by a teacher. And then they want a checklist of the 5-10 things they can do to be more intuitive (how oxymoronic,) and they want to merrily walk off on their way with a piece of paper saying they're qualified to be intuitive.The systems that have made you this way ARE DESIGNED TO DO SO to make you into a product-producing, drone-like peg. And the reason for THAT is because there are macro-level forces working to make billions of dollars at the expense of your sovereignty. Nobody gives a fuck about you. It's about money.You were trained to act standardized because of MONEY. They want every action you take to be of a design to keep SYSTEMS RUNNING.Take the fallacy of THE FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID that somehow convinced us we should be eating more grains than ever should be consumed by a human body. It didn't differentiate carbohydrates. ​It also didn't differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fats. Fast track to obesity. But the government pushed the model in schools to justify serving up government subsidies. Obesity causes disease but it's fine. BIG PHARMA has to take their cut.So, when you're looking to others to tell you what to do, that's because you were programmed like a rat to behave that way. Raising kids is hard work. Raising healthy eaters is even more challenging. There's picky eaters, kids with food allergies and sensitivities, kids with auto-immune diseases, ADHD, anxiety and many more variables That affect why our kids eat the way they do. Starting with feeding babies, managing toddler meals and moving through school age kids, high school teens and, of course, college dorm students, healthy eating requires patience, proper nutrition education and some serious meal prep and planning. Most parents and caregivers are living very busy lives and often do not have the time to think all of this through. Nutrition expert, Maria Emmerich, shares her own struggles raising her two boys to be healthy eaters, as well as her top tips and hacks she uses in the kitchen to prepare nutrient dense and delicious meals that her family loves. Maria has raised her two boys on a high protein and fat ketogenic diet since they were babies while debunking almost all of the nutritional advice most of us have received since becoming new parents. We discuss the importance of animal protein, saturated fats and cholesterol being front and center in our kids daily diet. Whole grains are promoted as the cornerstone of a healthy diet by authorities like the USDA, the American Heart Association, and the Food Guide Pyramid.  There's just one problem: Grains are also the leading cause of heart disease, especially modern crops like wheat and corn.   When Dr. William Davis came to this shocking realization, he began conducting research and later published the New York Times best-selling book Wheat Belly, which then turned into a series of books. Dr. William Davis is a cardiologist, best selling author, and the medical director and founder of the Wheat Belly Lifestyle Institute. With this work, he defied the traditional set of nutritional guidelines and beliefs that embraced grains and shunned fat. His research showed that fats weren't responsible for heart attacks, but grains were. When he put patients on a grain-free diet, their markers for heart disease went down and they experienced other perks like faster weight loss, reduced joint pain, and improved mental clarity.  In today's episode, I take a deep dive with Dr. Davis to explore why grains cause heart disease, what he found in his research, the important role of cholesterol in the body, why the current healthcare system won't help you prevent heart disease, and how to tweak your nutrition for better health.

Careers in Food Policy with Dr. Catherine Bertini Dr. Catherine Bertini, former Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, explains how she navigated her personal career path, from participating in formative extracurricular activities, to running for Congress and learning when to say "no" to political appointments.  In this conversation with host Jisung Park, Catherine discusses her passion for public service through the lens of exploration. Video: About Catherine: Catherine Bertini’s leadership of the UN World Food Programme transformed WFP into the world’s largest and most responsive humanitarian organization. As WFP’s Executive Director, first proposed by President George H. W. Bush in 1992, and re-endorsed by President Bill Clinton in 1997, Ms. Bertini led the efforts to end famine in North Korea, avert starvation in Afghanistan, ensure food was delivered effectively during crises in Bosnia and Kosovo, prevent mass starvation in the Horn of Africa and focusing on women as the key to ending hunger. Because of her reforms, WFP was held as the model for UN efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability. Ms. Bertini was named the 2003 World Food Prize Laureate for her leadership at WFP in ending famine and decreasing hunger. Later, Ms. Bertini served as the Under Secretary General for Management and as UN Security Coordinator. Secretary General Kofi Annan also appointed her as his Humanitarian Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Gaza and the West Bank. Today, Ms. Bertini serves as a member of the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development, which advises USAID, having been appointed by President George W. Bush and reappointed by President Barrack Obama. Ms. Bertini also is a senior fellow at the Chicago Council of Global Affairs.  She serves as a board member of the Stuart Family Foundation, a juror of the Hilton Foundation Humanitarian Prize, and on the Board of Directors of the Tupperware Brands Corporation.  For two years, she was the Senior Fellow of Agricultural Development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, she served as the Assistant Secretary of Food and Consumer services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she drove nationwide implementation of electronic benefit transfer programs, created a food package for breastfeeding mothers, and oversaw the design of the Food Guide Pyramid. Ms. Bertini earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Albany and has been accorded with numerous awards, commendations, and honorary degrees.  She has taught at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs since 2005 as Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs.
