& leaves them laughing in their seats!»

The rise of a young generation of far-right voters - conservative, anti-immigration, and fiercely nationalist - is a phenomenon shaping new electoral strategies all over Europe. Across France and Italy, a strong bond has historically linked prominent far-right parties, from Jordan Bardella's Rassemblement National to Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia, and various youth organisations, revealing a backbone of Islamophobia, fascism, and antisemitism, that particularly attracts young voters. In this episode, host Giada Santana and journalists Renée Bertini and Luigi Scarano discuss trends in radical youth movements in France and Italy, drawing on their on-the-ground experience.

You know Enrico Bertini, right? Writer, teacher, co-host of the Data Stories podcast, Enrico does it all. Now at Northeastern University, I invited Enrico to the show to talk about his research, great Substack newsletter, and for views on the evolving landscape of data visualization on social media. In our discussion, Enrico emphasized the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration at Northeastern University. He has some concerns about the current state of visualization theory and tools and talks about his ideas around “critical data thinking” as a crucial way of thinking about data visualization, highlighting the challenges of data accuracy and interpretation. We also talk about Enrico's teaching methods to help students improve their data interpretation and data visualization skills. Enrico and I share some of the same feelings about the shifts in social media use in the dataviz community, and how it has led to a loss in diverse intellectual exchanges, underscoring the importance of finding new ways to foster community engagement and creativity, including through writing platforms like Substack and LinkedIn.Topics Discussed The Current State of Visualization Theories and Tools: Enrico critiques the prevalent theories and tools in data visualization, calling for a more systematic and thoughtful approach to both creating and interpreting visual data. Challenges of Presenting Accurate Data: Our conversation delves into the difficulties faced in presenting precise and accurate data, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how these challenges have impacted the field. Impact of Social Media Platform Shifts: A significant focus of our conversation is on the changing landscape of social media platforms, particularly the decline of Twitter as a crucial space for professional exchanges within the data visualization community. Reflections Prompted by the Pandemic: Enrico reflects on the pandemic's role in helping him reevaluate his work and teaching practices, which is a helpful insight into how his creativity has changed and adapted over the last few years. The Role of Newsletters in Idea Refinement and Audience Connection: Enrico shares insights into how newsletters have become a pivotal tool for refining ideas and connecting with a diverse audience, including students from various disciplines, fostering a richer, more engaged community. Interdisciplinary Collaboration for Innovation: Highlighting the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially at Northeastern, this week's episode showcases how interactions between computer science engineering students and design peers, as well as varied problem-solving approaches from faculty members, can lead to fresh insights and propel the field forward.➡️ Check out more links, notes, transcript, and more at the PolicyViz website.Sponsor: Whisper TranscribeWhisper Transcribe is an absolute game changer in the world of transcription and AI-generated content creation! Here is something that makes many service design professionals cringe... The question to quantify the impact design has on the company goals. You'll see that finding the answer to this question is actually surprisingly easier (and more fun) than you might think. Here's a business mantra you might have heard before: If it's not being measured, it's not important. Numbers rule. That's that cold, hard reality of how companies operate. Now, as a design community, we've always struggled to quantify the value we bring to tangible business outcomes. Sure, there are valid reasons – we often work on systemic challenges where it's hard to make a water-tight correlation between our efforts and the specific impact they have on the goals. There are just many factors at play that have an influence, and isolating our contribution is hard or, rather, impossible. So, we often get hung up on this attribution question as we feel we can't "prove" how much we've contributed. Even if we want to measure our contribution, we find that the right measuring processes aren't in place to do so. So, we'd rather focus our time and energy on solving the actual challenge at hand than implementing those processes from the ground up. And let's be real, not many of us wake up excited about capturing things in a spreadsheet. So yes, there are reasons why quantifying the impact of design is hard and often lacking. But, as we've recently seen, we're paying a high price for this. Just scroll through your LinkedIn feed to see many sad examples of that playing out. When budgets tighten, design often takes the hit as it can't show, in numbers, its contribution to the business. Okay, I know this hasn't been a very uplifting message so far. But here's the good news. There is a group of professionals out there who absolutely love design and thrive on these types of measurement challenges. Of course, I'm referring to our friends from the DesignOps community. When we collaborate closely together, we have the power to anchor design as an indispensable strategic discipline. At least that's the firm conviction of Patrizia Bertini, our guest in this episode. Patrizia, shares her journey of implementing measurement frameworks that facilitate healthier conversations between design professionals and business stakeholders. In the conversation, we dive into the juicy stuff like value attribution, measuring systemic impact, and prototyping with numbers. I can't guarantee this episode will turn you into a spreadsheet enthusiast, but it will definitely inspire you to be BFFs with someone who loves crunching numbers. Let's face it; we might sometimes feel intimidated by numbers. We want to prove with scientific rigor that things are the way we say. But here's a secret: educated guesses are everything you need...

Danielle Bertini dropped a new one on Danielle and Elizabeth; yes, they thought they'd heard it all, but they hadn't heard of the Cat Distribution System! What is it? Listen to find out! Or if you already know, see if you agree with the premise behind it.Danielle is a cat mom a few times over, and the trio discussed their cats and cat behavior. Can we even say that there's such a thing as peculiar cat behavior? Isn't it all peculiar? The chat went on to include important topics such as the importance of spaying and neutering to control the stray cat population, the unique personalities and bonds that develop between cats and their owners, and the challenges and rewards of fostering and adopting cats, including the impact on the dynamics of multi-cat households. Of course Tommy's Cats Rescue came up, and how they decide what to do with the each of the multitude of cats they rescue all year long. It's not a just another stray cat to the rescuers, it's an individual who needs help and each one is different. It's kitten season now, so they're really deep into the fur at this point! If you want to view the transcript, just click on the 3 dots next to the share button under the video. In this episode, Jim Garrity tackles the frequent problem of repetitive questions in depositions, and answers the questions "How many of the same questions is too many? What factors should I consider in deciding whether the repetition has transitioned into harassment? And at that point, what do I do?" As always, Jim offers practice tips, identifies the legal grounds for "asked and answered" objections and for instructing deponents not to answer repetitious questions. And don't forget the show notes, full of great cases to illustrate the point.SHOW NOTESSiefert, et al. v. Hamilton County Board of Commissioners, 2023 WL 2456853, No. 1:17-cv-511 (S. D. Ohio Mar. 10, 2023) (court declined to reopen deposition, despite numerous instructions by defense lawyer not to answer questions on grounds of “asked and answered,” where it appeared that, by and large, deponent provided the information sought; noting that defense did not, however, comply with the rule relating to instructions not to answer based on harassment by then terminating the deposition or seeking a protective order; similar questions asked approximately two dozen times)Charles v. People, 2014 WL 2803991, 60 V.I. 823 (S. Ct. V.I. June 20, 2014) (noting judge's admonishment to defense lawyer with jury present that “. . .if you are going to ask the same questions five, six, seven, eight, nine times, move on to new territory”)Tajonera v. Black Elk Energy Offshore Operations LLC, 2015 WL 915273, No. CIV-A- 13-0366 (E. D. La. Mar. 3, 2015) (noting repetition of question 7 times, argument with witness and other behavior, declaring it a violation of both the federal rules and a prior order entered in that case that “that during depositions, counsel shall not engage in harassing or repetitive questioning”)Schenk v. Smith, 1991 WL 71927, 9-90-13, 9-90-14 (Ct. App. Ohio May 6, 1991) (afforming judgment on appeal, finding no error in trial court's instruction to counsel to desist from further questions on a given topic “since the question had been asked and answered four times. It is within the trial court's discretion to exclude relevant evidence if its probative value is substantially outweighed by undue delay or needless presentation of cumulative evidence”)Neighbour v. Matusavage, 25 A.2d 868 (Ct. Err. & App. N.J. 1942) (affirming judgment on appeal in case where trial court directed a witness not to answer and advised counsel that he had so ruled because the same question had been asked and answered 2 or 3 yellow times already, but noting that “the record shows that in fact the same question in slightly varied form had been asked and answered by this witness no less than a dozen times;” observing that “how many times a witness may be asked for the identical information irrespective of contradictory answers is within the sound discretion of the trial court”)Martinez v. Greiner, 2001 WL 910772, No. 01-cv-2911 (S. D. N. Y. Aug. 13, 2001) (noting court's observation that multiple defense counsel appeared to ask the same questions 12 to 15 times)Nolan v. Weil-McLain, 2005 WL 724041, No. 01-L-117 (Ill. Cir. Ct. Mar. 21, 2005) (noting in passing in opinion that a specific question, followed by substantially the same answer, was asked and answered several times throughout a deposition as different defense counsel questioned the deponent)Zeleny v. Newsom, No. 17-CV-07357-RS (TSH), 2020 WL 6585793, at *4 (N.D. Cal. Nov. 10, 2020) (“The asked-and-answered objection is additionally problematic because it is a speaking objection and therefore also violates Rule 30(c)(2)'s separate prohibition on argumentative and suggestive objections. There is nothing wrong with asking a question multiple times during a deposition. Sometimes the witness didn't answer it, or answered only part of it, or the answer is implausible, or the answer builds in caveats that a slight rephrasing of the question might expose, or asking essentially the same question from different angles or in slightly different ways yields different answers. Unless repeated questioning crosses the line into harassment, it can be an effective technique of cross-examination. Objecting “asked and answered” is a way of coaching the witness because it is not actually objectionable to ask a question multiple times. Saying “asked and answered” can be a way of telling the witness not to change his testimony from what he said before. Also, as every lawyer knows, when the defending attorney objects “asked and answered,” often the question really wasn't answered, so the objection becomes a suggestion to the witness to continue refusing to answer the question, which is what happened here. Defense counsel's instruction not to answer based on his “asked and answered” objection is overruled. Zeleny may depose Bertini further on those questions and on any reasonable follow up questions”)Fairweather v. Friendly's Ice Cream, LLC, No. 2:13-CV-00111-JAW, 2015 WL 339626, at *4 (D. Me. In appendice alcuni testi mai pubblicati o mai ripresi in volume dallo stesso Proust.

In episode 4 of Kofi Time, our special guest is Catherine Bertini. Ms. Bertini discusses how she worked with Kofi Annan to fight hunger and malnutrition around the world. Not only is access to food far from universal, but it is also severely impacted by conflicts and climate change. As food prices increase and access becomes even more challenging, how can we replicate Kofi Annan's approach to improving food systems to make sure no one gets lefts behind on the path to food security globally? About Catherine Bertini: An accomplished leader in food security, international organization reform and a powerful advocate for women and girls, Catherine Bertini has had a distinguished career improving the efficiency and operations of organizations serving poor and hungry people in the United States and around the world. She has highlighted and supported the roles of women and girls in influencing change. She was named the 2003 World Food Prize Laureate for her transformational leadership at the World Food Programme (WFP), which she led for ten years, and for the positive impact she had on the lives of women. While in the US government, she expanded the electronic benefit transfer options for food stamp beneficiaries, created the food package for breastfeeding mothers, presented the first effort to picture healthy diets, and expanded education and training opportunities for poor women. As a United Nations Under Secretary-General, and at the head of the World Food Programme for ten years (1992 to 2002), she led UN humanitarian missions to the Horn of Africa and to Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. During her time serving with WFP, Catherine Bertini was responsible for the leadership and management of emergency, refugee, and development food aid operations, reaching people in great need in over 100 countries, as well as advocacy campaigns to end hunger and to raise financial resources. With her World Food Prize, she created the Catherine Bertini Trust Fund for Girls' Education to support programs to increase opportunities for girls and women to attend school. At the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, where she is now professor emeritus, she taught graduate courses in humanitarian action, post-conflict reconstruction, girls' education, UN management, food security, international organizations, and leadership. She served as a senior fellow at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation early in its new agricultural development program. Bertini is now the chair of the board of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). Concurrently, she is a Distinguished Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She has been named a Champion of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit. She is a professor emeritus at Syracuse University. Photo Credit: UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe

Even though people think of me as a subscription person, I always say that for me, subscriptions are simply a tactic. Subscriptions force companies to better align their pricing with performance. If the subscriber doesn’t perceive ongoing value, they cancel the subscription…so it becomes the organization’s responsibility to ensure that the customer is achieving the desired outcome. That’s the real goal of subscriptions—to better align payment with outcome. Professor Marco Bertini is a professor at both Esade in Spain and the Harvard Business School here in the US. He is an expert on performance-based pricing—not just subscriptions, but pay-for-consumption models and even outcome-based pricing. Marco’s new book, The Ends Game: How Smart Companies Stop Selling Products and Start Delivering Value, which he cowrote with Oded Koenigsberg of the London Business School is one of the best pricing books I’ve read in a long time. In today’s conversation, we talk about how to optimize your pricing model to ensure that your customers can access the value you provide, use your offering well, and most importantly get the performance outcomes they need. Welcome to the show marco.
Would you rather pay for healthcare or for better health? For school or education? For groceries or nutrition? A car or transportation? A theater performance or entertainment? In The Ends Game, Marco Bertini describes how some firms are rewriting the rules of commerce: instead of selling the means (their products and services), they adopt innovative revenue models to pursue ends (actual outcomes). Ron and Ed are thrilled to have Marco on the show for what promises to be a stimulating conversation.

Marco Bertini, marketing professor at Esade Business School, says more and more companies are turning to pricing algorithms to maximize profits. But many are unaware of a big downside. The constant price shifts can hurt the perception of the brand and its products. He warns that overreliance on artificial intelligence and machine learning without considering human psychology can cause serious damage to the customer relationship. And he outlines steps managers should take, including implementing guardrails, overrides, and better communication tactics. With London Business School professor Oded Koenigsberg, Bertini wrote the HBR article "The Pitfalls of Pricing Algorithms."

Jo Bertini's recent exhibition at Sydney's Arthouse Gallery, ‘Songs of Dry Hills', alluringly portrayed the landscape she is drawn to repeatedly - the desert. Her love of that landscape and its First Nations People has led her to spend months at a time not only in the deserts of Australia but also those of India and the US. She has built an intimate connection to these lands and their people through thousands of hours of drawing and painting directly from her subjects. The paintings in her recent show were big and bold, but it wasn't just the scale that caught your attention. Standing in front of the works the viewer was drawn into an other-worldly landscape where earth colours are replaced with a kaleidoscope of hues including accents of shining iridescent paint. Jo has been exhibiting for over 30 years, in hundreds of solo and group shows, and her work is held in private and public collections across the world. She is also an acclaimed portraitist with work in the National Portrait gallery, as well as an art educator, lecturer and writer. Jo comes from a family of well known painters and photographers including the modernist photographer Olive Cotton and her mother, the sculptor Anne Ferguson, has been her greatest mentor. To hear the conversation press 'play' beneath the above photo. I also filmed Jo in her studio in Sydney - her larger studios are in country NSW and in New Mexico, USA, where she has lived for the past 5 years. That footage will be on this website and the Talking with Painters YouTube channel in a few weeks.
