Without Work… It Just Ain't Fun

It all started with an email… An email to someone this morning, saying that I think my marathon running career might be over. Why would I think this? Because on the weekends, I just don't want to run upwards of 15 miles. I don't feel like putting in the time, or the effort.I said that I just like running 5-7 miles per day… which, in the immediacy, is true. However here's what I've observed:When I don't run the 15s on the weekends, the 5s during the week are much harder and less enjoyable. In essence, I have to do the 15s to love the 5s.That reflection perfectly complimented my listening to Steve Chandler's The Story of YOU on my run today. He said that if you told someone to “go have fun on the piano,” how much fun they'd have is basically tied to how much work they put in.He said this beautiful line:“The connection of work and fun is always hidden away by advertisers and other peddlers of instant pleasure".”I tend to attract clients who desire “exoneration.” This is the land of hunky dory, where everything is just blissful rainbows. That place doesn't exist- but this one does, and if you're up for 30-ish minutes of motivation and a re-introduction of, wait for it, THE GET THE F*CK OFF PODCAST (because the new name sucked anyway,) I am here for it.Monologues all around. Roger Martin is an incredibly deep, beautiful, powerful human being I received the distinct pleasure of meeting this year. During our time on the Friendship Bench together, I began to view him very much as a teacher. In our conversation, we discovered we shared similar moments of awakening when we realized that life as we imagined was actually a creation our minds, an illusion, and completely changeable.Roger shares some of his early story, and the moments that got him asking the question that helped him change his entire experience: “Why Do You Experience Life As You Do?” (Or, “Why do I experience life as I do?”)This exploration centers in the ideas of curiosity, connection, waking up, and finally feeling peace after seemingly a lifetime without it.If you find yourself in a lifetime of pain, unable to shift from it, I hope you can listen to this episode, and hear something maybe a little bit differently than you have before.Roger is the author of the publication Helpful Questions Change Lives. He's the Co-Founder of The Mindset Difference, helping leaders be at their best, irrespective of the circumstances they face. You can find Roger on Substack (https://hqcl.substack.com/) on his website (https://www.themindsetdifference.com/) or on LinkedIn.

Motherhood is such a sacred, special, and often overlooked role that women play in our society. It comes a lot of heaviness. It's been a while since it's been just me and the microphone.Today's episode is inspired by the idea that “everybody's right.”Maybe it's a generational thing I notice from others— people wanting to know "the answer." Making everything "a debate." What's the "correct" answer? What is the "right way" to be?What if everybody's right? In fact, they are.And the experience you're having is simply your experience. To know that, to trust it, is part of "the way" to living a life more reasonably.Through my journey of recovery (since 2018, sober since Christmas, 2019) I began exploring “What's the best way to live?”I am brought back to the Tao more than anything else, the “way” to live a harmonious life. The Tao emphasizes simplicity and effortless action. Whenever we apply force, there will be a counterforce. When things are “right,” others, by default become “wrong.” When we oppress, people begin to rebel. This might go down in history as “the episode where Andee suggests we let everyone out of prison.”Funny… I think it seems reasonable. Maybe after this episode, you will too.Have a listen if you're in the mood for some hot air. Also, thanks to Craig James for your constant inspiration. You keep me feeling, questioning, wondering….

Mac Bogert is my soul brother, I'm certain. Since we first connected early this year, I've enjoyed all of the time we've spent together. We can weave in and out of conversation so effortlessly in the collective pursuit of exploration of humanity.Today's episode of View From the Roof is one of those marvelously circuitous conversations of discovery. We talk about love, embracing, giving, and receiving… There are notes of recovery in there, as Mac and I both are sober and on that journey. We explore judgment of self, how we believe that started, and how we perpetuate it. We talked about “finding the cracks” to foster connection, dropping our shields, and understanding that happiness and love are available… not scarce commodities. I think my favorite part of talking with Mac is that it's an experience. We share the understanding that we're all just tall children, so we come in curious as we are and allow that to guide us in our parallel journeys walking our paths.Give this a listen if you feel like joining our play. You might just learn what the meaning of life is.

Rediscovering Humanity At Its Best with Dennis Pitocco

In July 2022, Dennis Pitocco appeared in my LinkedIn DMs. We had been connected already because of a compilation book I participated in that year (The Four-Fold Formula for All Things Wellness) but the message seemed random to me. He had read my writing and wanted to offer me an opportunity to write for his publication… one that seemed perfect and aligned.“No costs. No surprises. No catches. No kidding. Just an amazing group of talented professionals who've joined us over the years to share powerful messages. And unlike other websites, we're completely independent (not advertiser supported), allowing us the freedom to publish good content – even if it's already been published elsewhere, as our Editorial Criteria is centered on timeless, actionable inspiration.”So, of course, my first thought was “There has to be a catch.”Turns out, there wasn't.And, as it turns out, that interaction completely changed my life. I started as a writer, but I ended up engaging with a new world of human beings focused on seeing humanity at its best, and living lives of compassion, integrity, connection, faith, dignity, humility, and love. It's been so beautiful, and it's my great honor to have Dennis on View From the Roof this week. The biggest thing to know about Dennis is that everything he does is “for good” versus “for profit.”He spent about 35 years in banking, met his wife, Ali, along the way, and they owned businesses all over the world. Then, about 15 years ago, they sold all the businesses and decided to settle down in Tampa, Florida.“We were faced with something very few people have, and that is choices… Well, here we were, able economically to do pretty much what we wanted. We weren't ready to retire. We weren't ready to play pickleball. And so we said ‘Let's take some long walks…'”On those walks, they decided a few things… They wanted to travel, and they wanted to give back. Give back, but not in the sense of “writing checks.” Both of them independently had a desire to serve humanity on a deeper level… Not just volunteering once a month but truly being with humans, talking with them, delivering meals, aiding non-profits, volunteering on boards, and becoming chairpersons of boards. They wanted to be involved in a deep and personal way.Dennis also decided around the time they retired that he desired to start a website to keep his mind active. He and Ali wanted to build something they wouldn't mind visiting every morning, and they were going to break all the rules in the publishing business… because they could. As he says in this interview, “I went out to a bunch of people that were writing for Forbes, Huffington Post, and other places, and said ‘Tell me what hurts?'He and Ali logged all of the complaints they received and said “We're going to do the opposite… You can write whenever you want about whatever you want. It could be poetry, it can be prose, it can be articles, it can be 10 pages long, or 10 words long… The only ground rules we have is at a very basic level it's got to be respectful and it can't be mean-spirited. Otherwise, share your voice.”That was the beginning of BizCatalyst 360. 13 years since they started, they have almost 1100 writers on every continent except Antarctica, they published about 30,000 articles, and they've won two awards. What started with long walks continued to include long walks. They served as a daily grounding point for Dennis and Ali. If a decision needed to be made on a direction they may or may not go, they'd add it to their morning walk. About six years ago, after what began as a small idea grew into “Oh my God, look at the size of this thing,” they decided in order to rediscover humanity, they needed to walk their talk also. You can serve humanity by working 24/7, but is that really the best way to do it? They decided it was time to take a sabbatical.Isn't that something? Something so many of us have trouble with this— the pause. And, it's necessary for us to connect deeper to what is, and who we are. They gave their writers dates of which they'd be away, and for three months, BizCatalyst 360 ran on autopilot with all new articles being held in a queue. During some cross-country travel around the same time, they ran into an old friend in Phoenix that Dennis knew from his days in banking. He told Dennis and Ali about his son passing away suddenly, and that he was planning to carry his ashes across the Camino de Santiago, which is a pilgrimage that's been around for over a century called “The Way of St. James.” They had never before heard of the pilgrimage, but in a moment of synchronicity, after they had left their friend and arrived in California, they saw that a movie called “The Way” was playing in a theater across from their hotel. The movie was about this same famous pilgrimage. Something was definitely going on.They decided after the sequence of events to walk 200 miles of the Camino. While adventure played a part in the walk, the depth of it was the connection with one another and themselves. They came back “changed people,” as Dennis says.Their relationships with others deepened. Those that didn't grow closer eventually backed off. Things became even more centered in holding that deeper connection with themselves and others. Since then, the depth and scope of what is encompassed under the umbrella of 360 Nation continues to grow.Their latest effort focuses on telling the stories of human beings affected by homelessness across the globe. The project is called “Unsheltered: None of Us Are Home Until All of Us Are Home” and you can read more about it here: https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/homelessness-time-to-debunk-the-myths/When I asked Dennis how we could help or where any of us could start, he said the most simple and most beautiful thing—Call someone. Ask how they are. Then, be quiet, and listen. Is it that simple? As Dennis wrote in this piece, “Being human is given. But keeping our humanity is a choice. It's not about me. It's not about you. It's about US. It's about serving others and finding ourselves along the way. It's about stepping back before we charge forward with whatever comes next —taking a momentary breath to stop, reset, and focus on how we can experience a more positively connected universe.”There's so much more I could write to surmise this amazing conversation, but I think it's best you listen for yourself. If you'd like to read about anything mentioned in this episode, here are the links:https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/in-search-of-humanity-a-360-perspective/ https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/in-search-of-more-with-less/https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/inside-360-nation/https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/discovering-magic-at-the-middle-of-a-bench/https://www.bizcatalyst360.com/homelessness-time-to-debunk-the-myths/https://allthingswellness.com/unsheltered/https://santiago-compostela.net/https://santiago-compostela.net/camino-frances/

Seeing Life as a Playground to Empower the Future of Humanity With Guest Anthony Hall

My guest on this week's episode is Anthony Hall (otherwise known as Grandpa STORK.) He is the founder of a space tourism industry startup, The Rose of Education Organization, TREO Inc. (https://www.treo-inc.com/) which is developing operations in education, entertainment, and exploration. They intend to be the leader and the answer to the question: “What kind of games and sports will humanity play in space?” Their goal is to empower and inspire the youth of the world, especially in marginalized areas of the world, so that they can be stakeholders as humanity takes its next grand voyage among the stars. This vision began when Anthony became a “Grandpa,” now 19 years ago. As he was in the delivery room welcoming his grandson into the world and watching the miracle of his daughter becoming a mother, he began to think about his life, successes, and accomplishments as an African American who had worked in the IT industry since 1992. The year was 2004, and as he envisioned the future, transported all the way forward to the 2060s when the US and former USSR would be celebrating the centennial anniversary of their space programs, he began to wonder—“With colonies on the moon, space mining, etc., What about the children of Africa? What about the other children in the world and developing countries? Will they be a captive audience? Would they be captains of industry and enterprises as humanity takes us next grand voyage into the stars?”That's when he began to explore “what Grandpa was doing to give back.” How could he be more of an active participant in his grandchildren's lives, communicate their dreams and aspirations, and help them discover, cultivate, and nurture their talents and gifts in a manner that will benefit humanity? What was birthed was a game-based, play-based learning platform to nurture and cultivate these young people by playing games— games to really tap into what their talents are, how to use their superpowers in the world, and how they present themselves to lead humanity forward in compassion, humility, and integrity. In our conversation, Anthony and I dive into how these games function to empower humanity, what he foresees for the future, and the vision for using these games to teach AI to help dissolve bias in the world. Here are all of the links where you can find Anthony aka Grandpa STORK and learn more about his work:https://www.treo-inc.comhttps://twitter.com/iamonlyclayhttps://tiktok.com/@grandpastork2https://instagram.com/grandpastorkhttps://YouTube.com/@grandpastorkhttps://linkedin.com/groups/3477989https://linkedin.com/in/anthonymhallGrandpa Stork's top four hacks for living a life with purpose, on purpose:Dream Big - Play Hard - Give Back - Have Fun If you got value out of this podcast and would like to support my work, consider leaving a tip in the tip jar!

I haven't gained holiday weight in five years.Five years.(I know it's not the holidays, but you'll see where I'm going in a minute.)There is a secret to this, and every year, I tell this secret in my emails and on my podcast, usually with someone certified in everything fitness and nutrition. I produce a free holiday ebook as well, every year. And yet, I am ignored every year. Why is it so?Because the secret is: do nothing. Let yourself spin out. You WILL return to homeostasis.People refuse to accept this. Their need to control is too great. They do the whole “restrict beforehand.”I will typically tell them “That's idiocy.”They usually ignore me.They do the whole “Ohhhh I can't have that.”What happens? Excess. Compulsion. Mental and emotional turmoil. The thing that hurts people the most in NOT JUST THIS but many areas is the need to obsessively control. When you don't let yourself grasp, grab, control, obsess, or “try to change it,” you will naturally move through everything that's happening with relative ease. You'll be like a boat moving with the ocean, rather than crashing on the hard sand with a giant wave. And, further, you'll come back to neutral way sooner than if you try to tweak, change, or alter in any way.Any oppression, even just in thought, will drag on those moments, sometimes indefinitely if you judge yourself hard enough. In this podcast, I dive into a variety of areas this pops up, not just with clients, but with me personally. If something resonates and you would like to talk about it, email me: andee@getthefuckoff.comIf you get value out of View From the Roof and would like to pledge support with a donation, here's a link to the tip jar.

“Connecting the Missing Links to Live in Love” With Zen Benefiel

I changed the name of my podcast this year to View From the Roof because I wanted to go deeper with my conversations. I believe that's a vast understatement of what I explore in this episode with my guest Zen Benefiel. When I met Zen at the beginning of this year, I had an experience of nothing other than pure love. He was leading a discussion and it seemed with every syllable he spoke, the room allowed for just a little bit more vulnerability and flow than they did before. The space between those syllables was the sacred, the space of harmonious being. As we got to know one another, I found him remarkably adept at tying big concepts together, which is something human beings are hungry for right now. In the old paradigm, we viewed aspects of our lives in a state of separateness. Science, spirituality, religion, our careers, our bodies, our friendships, etc were things that we viewed as, for the most part, seemingly unrelated.Even now, as society intellectually explores things like AI and UFOs - many of these concepts are filed away in our minds as “other.” And yet, what if it's all part of the infinite intelligence? Zen has been talking about consciousness deeply since the 70s and 80s, when his message could hardly be heard, never mind understood.I've been a voracious consumer of his content for a few months, and I'm honored to have him as my guest on View From the Roof. The pandemic facilitated a phenomenal opportunity for us as points of consciousness to become more aware of who we truly are. As Zen says, “We all have a perfected form, fit, and function. It's a genetic and solar blueprint that we carry, that we have not been paying attention to because we didn't understand the intricacies of how well-designed we are. That comes from acquiescing to allowing that flow to come, and not using the same thinking that caused our problems to solve them.”Maybe it's time we start connecting the missing links.I hope you'll take an opportunity to explore some big shit with us in this episode. I find that so many of us share that deep inner knowing of who we are, and we allow whatever we think we should be to take over and keep us from ourselves. This podcast is just one more step in putting all of the things together and having it make sense. As Zen would say, “then make sense common, so we can all rise to that level of love that we've been living in, that we've been denying for millennia.”You can learn more about Zen by checking out all of his links below. This week's episode is about the inner reality of our experience- actually, specifically, that the experience is being had by the experiencer and only the experiencer. It was inspired by this Instagram video on @mantalks where a gentleman was talking about it being time to “let go of porn,” as within years, all of the online porn/chat sites will be led by AI, and not a human. My question is- “What does it matter?”Through my analysis, I show how not only does it not matter, but more broadly, how the experience you're having is unique to you and only you.And also, while it's true that it might be time to let go of porn, AI running the show has very little to do with it.

Welcome back to — View From the Roof, formerly The Get the F*ck Off Podcast.I'm doing what we know in the restaurant industry as a “soft open,” which is usually soft for everyone but the employees. It's my first episode back in a while on this beautiful Media Monday, and it is here to let you know it's still me! I'm STILL Andee Scarantino and I'm still going to be talking about things to help you get the fuck off that shit that doesn't serve you anymore. And, we're also going to be going deeper.View From the Roof and my new Substack (please subscribe) of the same name came from my Human Design. I am what's known as a 6/2 profile. The 6/2 lives their first 30 years as an experimenter, and then they go “on the roof” for the next 20 to lick their wounds and observe life from a heightened perspective.Since I have been deepening my work (exploring consciousness and going back to my sociological roots,) I thought Get the F*ck Off was just not BIG ENOUGH for all the stuff I'd like to explore. So, here we are: View From the Roof. I know you'll love it.Today's topic was digital body language, and what I've observed since Meta's release of the Threads app. As I wrote today on LinkedIn:“Have we heard of "digital body language?" Erica Dhawan wrote a phenomenal book about it.I would never, in a real-life room, pop in with a bullshit smile on my face and say "list three things you're grateful for AND GO!" Fuck you.Nobody did that 20 years ago. They came into the online space and spoke when they had something to say. What I'm feeling most through our current digital experience (sans Threadsapp) is the pressure to feel like I "should be talking" when I don't have something to say.Sometimes I simply don't have something to say, and I don't think it serves anyone for me to repeat the same story sixteen times in a week. You'd be thinking I was at the bottom of a bottle of Johnnie Walker if this was "real life," which, it is, by the way. This space is as real and open and connected as the fleshy, physical spaces we traverse.”There's been a ton of noise in the void recently, as I wrote about in this piece for BizCatalyst 360.Threadsapp was a welcome break from the constant disruption and distraction, and internet culture that defies the standards of our social etiquette. Also, dare I say that not all of us are innovators or thought leaders, and everyone trying to be at the same time doesn't make for a more cohesive, thoughtful society, but rather the opposite. Ray Kroc built McDonald's… but he didn't come up with the idea for it. It takes all kinds. This is the result of our “main character syndrome” which takes us in a direction where we don't see the sacred of every moment. As I wrote some time ago in my piece “Sometimes, You're the Audience,” we're always playing a divine role, even if the moment isn't wholly and completely about us.Thanks for hanging out while I did my renovations. (Essentially I just needed a break to get my head straight.)I'll be episoding more in the future, and also yes, re-doing the show open. It's good to be back.Andee*If you liked this episode, you can support me by leaving a tip.

I was visiting Martin in Indiana a week or so ago, and during the weekend I was there, we went to spend some time with his friend in Chicago.Because I don't know Indiana well, I chose to do my long run in Chicago that morning and then return to spend the afternoon with the two of them.WELL. They play "cribbage." Have you heard of this card game?Cribbage is an extremely challenging game to learn because there are A LOT of parts and rules. There's even an entire culture around cribbage.THIS GAME was a perfect example of some of the fundamental learning that we do in The Day 1. Experience.I learned how to play Cribbage on Saturday, sure. I learned the rules, I learned how everything worked, and I learned the terminology. YET, I still seemed to be doing much more poorly than they were doing, even though I knew the SAME set of rules they knew. When I said "I think the deck is stacked against me," Martin told me his friend used to think that too, but it really isn't the deck. It's that there's just soooooo so much information that the brain is processing at once. You can learn the basic rules of a game, but there are other things you don't learn in the rules which make you a better player.Like, for instance, they watch what cards one another plays, and then they deduce in their minds what other cards MUST be in one another's hands. They have access to so much information simultaneously, and things like "counting" and "adding" aren't something their minds actively think about. This is sort of like driving, when your mind no longer has to actively think about where the blinker is when you're passing someone on the highway. You just know where it is.What we often like to do is make meaning that somehow, we should be further along than we are. It's just impossible, though. Integration takes months- YEARS EVEN!!!!Just YOU getting an EMAIL from me is the result of WEEKS OF MY LIFE OF LEARNING.I had to learn what ConvertKit was.I had to learn how to operate landing pages and forms. The product links to register for Day 1.? That was hours. The sequence email you'll get when you register for Day 1. with your preparation checklist? Hours. I have the URL day1experience.org now-- that was hours because I could validate the records in my DNS and had to contact support. I remembered how back in 2021, it took AN ENTIRE DAY OF MY LIFE to learn what a subdomain was and how to host a landing page there. You see an email.I see a cumulative month of my life. You see this podcast. I see another two weeks of my life. Not to mention just the practical thump-thumping to publish it. We look at what others are doing and tell stories about how we should be. What if you could just be here now as you are and have PEACE about it?As a person who has made a major transformation, I'll tell ya- it feels like nothing is happening as it's happening. If you get a burst of evidence that something is happening, that's an exception, not the rule.In our Day 1. Experience you will learn how to be here for yourself as things occur. The deck is NOT stacked against you. You just have not been in the work daily for enough time for it to be muscle memory. We reopen April 1. Making Yourself "Do It" and The Manual Override

This podcast was inspired by an email that I wrote recently about humans and their expectations for me to push them up the hill. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: I never want to do anything. Ever.Right now I'm being more consistent with my running, which means fewer days off, and the same mileage. So, instead of running 5-6 days per week, I'm attempting to take no days off (unless something comes up, like a 12-hour drive to another state, which I have planned for next week.)I love to run. I run more days than I don't. Last year, I ran 289 days, for 314 hours. And if a morning happens where I actually want to do it, it's a fucking miracle from GOD.That's right. I do something just about every day that I do not want to do, and for it, I get to receive THE MASSIVE, INFINITE rewards that come from being a runner. Physically, great, it's fine-- but my mental health, my passion, my creative abilities, my clarity-- all of this is improved by my doing something that, every day, I initially do not want to do.Do you know when I start liking a run? Mile 5.I'm committed to showing up imperfect, so here's some blunt honesty:I'm in year three of GTFO, and I came from (like many new entrepreneurs) the employee mindset. As an employee, I basically had to bend over, take it up the ass, and allow people to be "right" when I was "wrong." I had to please the people who gave me money, because, after all, they were giving me money.Because of my trained employee mindset, I made mistakes as a new entrepreneur.I ended up coaching some humans who wanted me to push them up the hill. They wanted me to do it for them. Because, after all, this game was so dull, and their TikTok deadened senses were in need of me to dance and sing and somehow make the glob of this shiny for their elementary school minds. And as a "good employee," I thought that my job was to do just that!

For those of you who know me, you know I love social media. I was in the second-ever cohort of Facebook users, and I love Instagram as a resource of information. (I taught myself to run distance pretty much from shit I read on Instagram.)Yet, I see a lot of people falling into comparison traps with social media, ignoring the very basic idea that everything is curated.Much like we allow our critical faculty between the conscious and subconscious mind to lower so that we can enjoy a movie (we forget that there's lighting, a director, cameras, actors, a set,) we also do this for content we see on the internet. Then, we mistakenly allow ourselves to place judgment on how we're doing in life.As a person who has made and continues to make transformation in her own life, I can tell you, there is a hell of a lot of monotony, and times where it feels like “absolutely nothing is happening here.”If you're one for falling into a comparison game with others, or you seem to think your timeline isn't moving quickly enough, this episode is for you.To subscribe for GTFO emails: https://breakfree.getthefuckoff.com/If you like what I do and want to leave me a tip, here's the tip jar: https://breakfree.getthefuckoff.com/products/tip-jar

I begin this podcast with my age-old “story” —“I HATE COMMUNITY.”I've been saying this for just about all of my life, yet finding community was the thing that helped me change my entire life back in 2018, and continues to help aid and facilitate for me tremendous understanding, awareness, and growth. When you lack community, you lack evidence that things can be different. You are the makeup of the five to six people closest to you, and if they are stagnant, afraid, self-loathing, dramatic, stuck in victim consciousness, etc, etc, you might not see that life, and other people, truly can be any way.Finding community allows you to break through the barrier of the known self. For me, had I relied on the people I knew for support and guidance, I'd have had the recipe that those people knew how to create. It was branching out, and being willing to sit in a space where I was uncomfortable that I learned a new way of being. My gratitude for my earliest community remains unmatched.Even though sometimes it's like pulling teeth, I force myself to sit in community several times per week and be with different, interesting humans. This is how I learn about myself and the world. People are the accelerant. This podcast is a personal narrative, but as you listen to it, I'd encourage you to perhaps try to hear something in a way you haven't before. If you want to join the waitlist for the Day 1. community reopening soon, you can subscribe for updates at day1.getthefuckoff.comSubscribe for general GTFO emails here: breakfree.getthefuckoff.comIf you love the work I do and would like to leave a tip, here's a link to the jar: https://breakfree.getthefuckoff.com/products/tip-jarStay beautiful, and we'll talk soon!-Andee

Why Slowing Down is Necessary for Transformation

Years ago, I used to believe I could give a human information, and they would make transformation. I would busy myself with consuming book after book, listening to revolutionary thing after revolutionary thing, because I “knew” if I just showed those humans where the juice was, they'd nourish themselves with it.It turns out, this is not the case… at all. Why? Because a human must also slow down to allow the connections to form in the brain. Information does not equal transformation.Something still seemed confusing in my mind, though. “Why?”I was telling the story that I made transformation by consuming information, completely ignoring the fact that I am an endurance athlete. I run long distances, and often slip into an Alpha brain wave state, which I maintain for long periods of time. This podcast is about different types of brainwaves, and how a human cannot create their reality from Beta brainwaves (where our logical, analytical, thinking mind lives.) I also tell some Punxy stories, because I got to go see the Groundhog last week for my Mom's 60th (she was born on Groundhog Day.)I hope if you're of the Western “do, do, do, do” variety, you'll take some time to give this a listen. If you do not get my emails, you can subscribe at breakfree.getthefuckoff.comIf you are interested in the wizardry that I do, check out my coaching page: https://www.getthefuckoff.com/coachingI accept tips for the GTFO podcast! This week, I couldn't be more delighted to have my friend Jill Andersen, speaker, coach, and recovering rule follower as my guest on the Get the F*ck Off Podcast.Jill is one of the founding members of my group, Day 1.Recently, she had one of the most powerful speaking events of her career. The secret: being here now.Like many of us, Jill used to “live in the future.”“Once I get here then…”The focus was always on “the next point,” rather than the joy in the journey. When we live in the future, we miss what's going on. We talked about many of the societal factors responsible for this, including how social media has developed.A lot of people use social media as a representation of what isn't versus a method of connection (its origin use.)Everything has us focusing on a seemingly better end point, rather than being in the richness unfolding at every given moment. When Jill spoke about her speaking event, she had an awareness. As she eloquently said:“The only thing I am here to do is to have an experience WITH THESE PEOPLE.It wasnt me coming in thinking, “oh are they gonna receive everything I'm giving them? Is this gonna change their life?”That wasnt the point. The point was going in there and sharing what I share and doing what I do in a way that only I can, just like everyone else has their gift of doing what they do… And it was this gift of ultimate presence in seeing each one of those people… and going on this journey with them in the time that we had.The whole front to back experience was rich in a way i never had before.”We often think can control other people's experiences. We can't.We also can't skip out on our own experience. As Jill says “there's no OASIS where you can have a Starbucks and wait for everything to pass.”Life is good, bad, ugly, and blissful. All emotions are part of the human experience.Jill also gives a crash course on eliminating “shoulds” from your life.Known as “The Should Lady,” she points out that everything is a choice.“We compare ourselves to other people. That's why my life was a “should show.” My childhood was observing what everyone else was doing and thinking that's how I have to do it.Now I view “should” as the segue into a choice of “could I?”You can learn more about booking Jill as a speaker by visiting her website heyjill.com.Find her on Instagram @theshouldlady✨If you loved this episode, consider leaving me a tip.

100 episodes ago, I started The Get the F*ck Off Podcast with the sole intention to help people “get off the smokes, get off the sauce, get off your ass.”The thing is, as a coach, I have worked with almost no one who has had this desire. This is because by the time people get to me, they know that their symptoms (drinking, overeating, smoking, gambling, over-working, constantly producing, UNDER-producing, crippling anxiety) are all a surface-level manifestation of the deeper shit living in their subconscious minds that needs to seen, understood, re-wired, or made peace with.I debated changing the name of my podcast many times, but I realized that it is the prime example of something people start listening to to get what they want, and instead they get exactly what they need.To “get off the smokes, get off the sauce, get off your ass” you very much need to take whacks at your ego, and explore your inner realities and upset that keep you in that space.Putting a rigor or routine on it, reinforcing yourself with goodies and treats, or constant abstinence for the long haul of ever with the idea you're missing out on something will only lead you right back to where you began. What does Get the F*ck Off really mean? Get off your shit. Get off of this soapbox of story you tell, over and over, where you paint yourself as heroic because you're in constant endurance of anything that is slowly killing you. It's not attractive. YOU are not attractive. And I don't mean the way you look. We're getting deep and staying deep in Season 2. I'm exploring a lot in my work, and this podcast will reflect that.If you still have the humble idea that all you want to do is stop smoking weed, that's fine, stay. But weed is not your problem. It never was. Here's to the next 100 episodes!AS I MENTIONED in the episode, I am giving a stop drinking/dry January series (completely informational) called The Sober Series. My guest for my 100th episode is a human that I hold very close to my heart- a human who, if not for his very existence, my life would not be as it is today. I started following Andy Petranek during my first Whole Life Challenge, as he was the co-founder, and posted a lot of content I found motivational.By the next year, I knew with 100% certainty that meeting him was part of my path forward. He was far from me geographically and had no idea who I was, but it was like there was an other-worldly force pulling me in his direction. After we finally connected in early 2020, it began to reveal itself that the path I was walking, and the path Andy was walking, were destined to overlap in divine timing. We were both deepening our consciousness and our conversations began to reflect that.I have learned so much within those conversations. From the very first one, Andy awakened in me an aliveness that I hadn't felt in over a decade, a connection with myself so deep it is almost too sacred to mention.I think that's why, for the longest time, I couldn't bring myself to share him with the world on my podcast.Andy's my complete opposite and one of my dearest friends. If you've met Andy, you know that there's a brilliant light that shines through him. Addressing Problems, Not Symptoms

We're trained in the West to address symptoms- not problems. For example, I do not have trouble with sobriety. This is because concurrent to getting sober, I began learning about spiritual psychology, which taught me about unresolved issues and deeper inner work. I then learned my drinking was a symptom, not a problem. For this, I don't relate to the traditional Western recovery model which focuses on willpower and disempowerment. I don't relate to the stories of people in recovery and their struggle with it. Shit was hard, but once the physical addiction was over, I never had to think about it again. All I had to do was work on myself. In the West, we treat our lives and the things that show up as holes in a leaky ship.We put bandaids on the holes and never look for the problems, yet the ocean of problems is powerful trying to bust through.Identity, limiting beliefs, and story are the things that disrupt our peace. We can use “goal line' strategies to temporarily deal with the symptoms, but without acknowledging and dealing with the problems, the symptoms will always persist. In this episode, I explain how this has shown up in my own life, along with talking about larger systemic factors you may not even be aware of.I also talk about the giant “purge” of decades of papers and receipts I had hoarded in my apartment, that seemingly, I did not know were there until I completed a bout of inner work that aided me in shedding an old identity.I also talk about changes to Day 1. that will make it the MOST EXCITING COHORT YET (complete with new resources.)Links mentioned in this episode:Dr. Gabor Maté's video on disease: https://youtu.be/c6IL8WVyMMsInformation/Join the Day 1. Western society does not teach people "the paradox."What is the paradox? The paradox is the balance of the divine feminine and the divine masculine. The basic idea that intuition guides you through life, and then you must create by showing up, thump thump, one foot in front of the other. It is "this" and it is "that."It is do and it is also "sit the fuck down and breathe."Imperfections, curiosity, wonder, and the chipping away at the block is not taught in our schools. Perfectionism is. Perfectionism and STANDARDIZATION. (This is deliberate, to make sure we all fall in line to keep the corporate machine churnin' away.)Perfectionism is "the grade" we want to receive. We want to make sure we're doing it right and well. We are taught "action = reward" in school and our corporate job market mimics that. For your entire life you've been taught that every effort you put forward must be big, massive, "good," and exact by someone else's definition.Waiting until the "good effort" or the "good idea" comes along before taking inspired action on your intuitive guidance translates to yourself (and thereby the world) as paralysis, stagnancy, and inactivity. If you get value out of this podcast and would like to support me financially, please consider leaving a tip in the tip jar:https://breakfree.getthefuckoff.com/products/tip-jarIf you would like to join the waitlist for Day 1. you can find it here: day1.getthefuckoff.comDownload my free 2022 Holiday Survival Guide here:ebook.getthefuckoff.com

When Kristen Brown told me she had a book coming out called The Recovering People Pleaser: A Spiritual Guide to Reclaim Your True Worth and Attract the Love You Deserve, I jumped at the opportunity to invite her on my podcast.Kristen is a Relationship Healing and Self-Worth Recovery Mentor, and she helps people in dysfunctional, often abusive, relationships reclaim their self-worth.Kristen has led a life with a strong desire to help others. In 2009, after finding herself attracting and marrying, as she says, "yet another toxic person, another dysfunctional relationship, where I was not treated equally," her life was swept away like in a big tsunami. (She calls that area of her life her "tsunami.")She went from having an excellent credit score and never missing a bill to being on the verge of homelessness with three children in tow.She vowed at that point to remain single and celibate for as long as it took to not have this pattern repeat. Kristen's ex-husband was a physically abusive, adulterous narcissist with alcohol dependency. And, as narcissists tend to do, he threw out the line in an argument "you are the common denominator" just to be hurtful. (Meaning, if all of her relationships went to hell, she was obviously the problem."Then, she had an epiphany..."I am the common denominator."This began her journey of self-worth recovery. It's amazing how fast you can take charge of your own life when you shift from being a victim to realizing you are in the driver's seat of your experience. (I related a lot to this story, as I had that same epiphany when my ex-boyfriend abandoned me at the airport in 2018. I was also the common denominator, and noticed that my reality was my creation.)In this interview, we cover so much. Why people pleasing? Because people pleasing is a behavior that is the result of shame and unworthiness; Kristen calls shame and unworthiness "the plague on the planet."One of the ways shame and unworthiness translates in a human is "people pleasing," "doormat," and "codependency." Kristen calls her work "relationship healing and self-worth recovery” because we heal our relationships through our self-worth recovery. Her new book is designed as a spiritual guide to help those struggling with people-pleasing tendencies reclaim their power in their human experience, and thereby, attract the love they deserve. You can find Kristen on her website at kristenbrown.orgKristen's second book, The Recovering People Pleaser – A Spiritual Guide to Reclaim Your True Worth and Attract the Love You Deserve is due to be released in November 2022. Telling a New Story

I start this week's episode with the concept of “slow processing” vs. “over-analyzing.”It wasn't until the last few years that I learned that people process at different speeds. However, it leads me to examine whether or not we actually process slowly, or rather, we know what is true for us immediately, and then begin to use the logical mind to over-analyze and negate the direction of our intuition. For a long time, I was an over-analyzer and stuck in every aspect of my life. Then, in February 2020, one sentence changed my reality forever: tell a new story. The recipe of the circumstances was just right. Without question, without extra thought, without mulling over every possibility for life going forward, I simply heard the sentence and then acted. One of the hardest things for me as a content creator is repeating myself.I tend to believe “once is enough,” and it's hard for me to say the same thing over and over. For example, I have spoken ad nauseam on this podcast about how alcohol does not add much, if any, value to your life. I have told personal stories, cited resources, and truly come forward with passion and enthusiasm. You likely wouldn't be here if you didn't have the inner knowing that alcohol isn't serving you. Thus, I find that saying it over and over is perhaps reinforcing the behavior of over-analyzing. You know your truth. It doesn't seem that you need extra information to “buy it.” Do you leave my episodes with that knowledge, and then go off into over-analysis? If that's the case, is repeating myself actually serving you? When people want to stop drinking, a lot of times the first concern is "who will I be on the other side of this?"I know I worried about that, and it was comforting to me when I learned that would not be the case. When I interviewed my friend Elliott on my podcast last year, he also voiced that he was worried he'd be this boring person that "everyone thinks is sad." Who the hell wants that?I was one of those people who just saw a sliver of the world of recovery, reinforced by disempowering accounts the Instagram algorithm served up, and uninspiring, "straight out of a text book" Google search results.I was completely misinformed about what would actually happen, which was that I would become more me than I'd ever been.A lot of people think they need to drink to have a good time, or to be a good time. That's learned behavior. We're all born with the ability to be amazing, but we start hiding our brightness as we age and encounter other beings we worry we won't measure up to.In Kabbalah they say the second someone enters the room, you are disconnected from the light because at that point, you concern yourself more with their opinion than your connection to source.Alcohol is just an anesthetizer, but it bears a heavy cost.Just to bust a myth, you will be fun when you stop drinking. If you're not what you consider to be “fun,” it's because of a limiting belief you hold about yourself.I talk about all of this and more in the episode.Holiday promotions are coming! It Doesn't Matter What Someone Tells You To Do

You can teach a person how to do something until you're blue in the face... People won't do shit that is incongruent with their value systems.I KNOW.I know!I'm going to give you an example: Because I'm a coach I get solicitations from every business coach from here to Mumbai claiming to have the system that will be for sure the panacea to all of my possible money woes.Except... they won't be.Every system of something is going to work. Every system. But not every system will work for every person, because people act in accordance to their beliefs, and their beliefs are determined by their values. Often, those value systems were created by things outside of us, and we will not act incongruent with those systems. So, for example, if some shlup tells me the secret to building a coaching business is sending cold, copy/pasted DMs, I will not do it. Why? Because it is incongruent with the value system that I learned growing up.I have a belief that conversation should be personal, relatable, and authentic. Is this true? No! Conversation is cookie cutter all the fucking time. Half of your inbox is cold, cookie cutter bullshit some non-creative AI put together to sell you a new pair of jeans.Yet, I have a value system that opposes this strategy, so I will not do it. I will not do it at tremendous costs. You could tell me "send cold DMs for a week straight and you'll pay off alllllll of your school debt" and I'd be lettin' that shit go to default.Value systems are strong. The reason people don't make transformations is not because they don't know what to do. It's because of who they believe they are, and that belief being incongruent with the actions needed to be taken to achieve their desired result.I was having a business meeting just this past week with a colleague that is selling his coaching program for weight loss. He said to be "it's simple, you just need to create a calorie deficit."Except it's not that simple. People have layers and layers of identity attached to their eating behaviors. Macro systems like government have influenced the standard American diet since we were children. Then, money-making systems influenced the resulting overweight Americans to do random shit to their bodies in accordance with self-hate, not self love. There are actually grown ass women who try to meet the caloric needs of toddlers because of those systems. (1,200 calories. Coincidentally the people who try to do this are usually the heaviest. Meanwhile my happy ass eats 2,500)Because the aforementioned systems oppress women, the women begin to rebel against them.Call it good ol' American sovereignty. The value system that we will not be oppressed! AT ANY COST!Except there is a cost. These women end up rebelling against shit that we're naturally meant to do, like move our bodies.I had a client who was beginning intuitive eating, and said she was intuitively called to eat yogurt, but felt she shouldn't because yogurt is attached to diet culture. (Do you see this? Shit's strong.)It's all cyclical.I get a kick out of people on my Instagram telling people how much protein to eat, or posting those generic photos of their breakfasts on their stories.Motherfuckers don't care. If they have a belief that health is not for them, they will not align themselves with health. If they have a belief that your berries, eggs, and toast align with a system that left them feeling oppressed and less than, they're gonna reach for the Lucky Charms. Just like I won't send cold DMs for a quick buck.We do not have free will. We just think we do. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS you can explore these beliefs in detail when you have someone to hold a mirror.I just had three one-on-one clients finish within the last month and a half, so I have space for new applicants. What do I do? Shit like this. How I Stay Consistent (Hint: I Don't Give a Fuck About Consistency)

I recently was learning about Human Design (a category I can only say I'm a novice in,) and it was pointed out to me that I have a completely open ego/motivation center.I was asked if I had trouble with consistency, and truth be told, I don't give a fuck about consistency. What I give a fuck about is being a “good” character in my own story. (“Good” in quotes because of the deeper work I do where we essentially throw out the idea that “good” and “bad” exist at all.)I'll give an example:Recently, I was experiencing what I'd call ultra paranoid thoughts. One day, I was on a run, for example, and a banana peel was on the running path. I thought “someone is going to slip and break their neck,” so I picked it up and tossed it into the road.FOR THE NEXT MILE I was having RIDICULOUS thoughts that a car would slide on the peel, hit another car, there'd be a huge accident, they'd “look at cameras and see I threw the banana peel,” I'd be GETTING A LAWYER, GOING TO JAIL, etc etc. Now, this is completely ridiculous, but it made me realize I hadn't meditated in quite a few weeks.I did not like playing the character of a person who thinks they're going to serve 25 to life for throwing a banana peel into the street, so I decided daily meditation had to resume.I don't give a flying fuck about meditation. I do care about how the character of Andee Scarantino shows up in the world, and I did NOT like the one who was showing up.The same goes true for exercise. I give few to no fucks about how my body looks. I don't wish to be ill, but I am not motivated by a physical exterior.I AM, however, a person who struggled with anxiety and depression for many, many years, and I find I do not have this when I exercise. So, I show up. Every. Day.This is a podcast about consistency and motivation.I'm consistent and I'm motivated, but I'm neither inherently.I also talk about how even though I have made MASSIVE, MASSIVE FUCKING CHANGE in the last five years of my life, almost every day it feels like “nothing is happening.”Sure, I've had beautiful, emotional moments like being seated in an exit row for the first time and being able to agree to the terms (one of my first sober flights,) or PR'ing the NYC Marathon four weeks after running Chicago with a red event alert level. (It was f'in hot)However, most days are humdrum, thump thump.People think there's this MASSIVE “release” that happens when you make a giant change. There isn't.Because we are only here now, my experience is that everything typically feels very stagnant. The feeling of change involves monotony and micro-deposits.Letting go of the idea there's going to be this massive moment where all of your bullshit is released is necessary for growth.Daily deposits, big why, and “thump thump.” That's where it's at.Mentioned in this episode is my interview with Frank Zaccari which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TsW6Ct_K-w&t=1666sJoin my email list here: breakfree.getthefuckoff.comEmail me if you have any questions at all: andee@getthefuckoff.comIf you like what I do and want to surprise me with a tip, you can leave it in the tip jar by clicking here or visiting: https://breakfree.getthefuckoff.com/products/tip-jar

While my sobriety didn't begin until the day after Christmas, 2019, my recovery began nearly two years earlier, the night I was left at an airport in the middle of the night without a flight home. The interview will be live for the world in a few weeks on Roku TV.However, in the interim, I was inspired to bring the concept of “sobriety” vs. “recovery” front and center for my audience, talking about addressing problems vs symptoms, and digging deeper into my own story.ALSO, I made mention at the end of this episode, but Day 1. - my women's coaching community, is CLOSING SEPTEMBER 14.Here's some info about Day 1.

I think about this a lot. When you go through a transformation, it's very common for people to leave. When I stopped drinking, I used to believe the story that people would leave my life because I wasn't “fun anymore.” That isn't the actual reason why they ended up leaving. We can't stay connected to people we don't match the frequency of, as we are vibrational beings. It wasn't that I wasn't “fun anymore,” but rather it was because I wasn't sad anymore. I wasn't a victim to everything anymore. I wasn't hopeless anymore. When you go through a change, one of two things will happen: you will either become a lighthouse for the people closest to you to grow, or you will annoy the fuck out of people so much, and trigger them so fucking much, they will walk the fuck right out of your life. And… that has to be OK.No matter how hard you try, you MAY BE the villain in someone else's story.I talk about this in this episode, and how what we often do is take something someone says as a personal attack. I've done it, and people have done it to me.One of The Four Agreements (from the book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz) is “don't take anything personally.”Yet, when people remain unhealed in an area, something you say MAY touch them in a way that's triggering. They may feel intense anger for you and your very being. This is a transformation reality.I'd love to say that you can elevate and keep everybody around, but… you just can't.They're gonna go.SIDEBAR: Enrollment for Day 1. Yesterday, I was at the bodega buying some club soda when I got behind a woman asking about something called "Grabba."After she paid and left, I asked the guy working what it was. He explained to me in a thick accent (so if I get it wrong, I apologize) that it was something to do with smoothing out the feeling of smoking marijuana. He then asked if I smoked, to which I said "not anymore. You remember."He laughed and said he did.I remember going into that bodega for cigarettes all the time. They were two dollars more there than the Duane Reade, but it was so much easier to just go in and have him place my brand on the counter... Rather than try to explain to the 18-year-old at the drugstore about what "Marlboro Menthol Gold Pack" was-- as it was green, not gold. They were formerly called "menthol lights," which I used to say... until the cashier could not locate "lights," because the pack didn't display it. The whole memory of it gives me a headache. But back to the story... When I left the bodega, I got a feeling of remembering the first time someone asked if I smoked, and I said "no."I'd been a smoker since I was 14. I fused it to every facet of my being. I tied it into my masculinity and toughness. It was part of my "fuck you" attitude that to be honest, I still have.It was important for me to be strong, and part of letting go of that smoker's identity was realizing that smoking made me the exact opposite of what I wished to portray: weak, smelly, and unlikeable. The anxiety I felt initially to say I was NOT a smoker was heavy in my chest. Just answering that question differently than I "always had" had me feeling like a fraud. Yet, after a few years, it doesn't plague me at all to say I am no longer a smoker. In fact, I'm proud of it. And now, I do things that actually make me a strong badass. Not things that have me weak, craving, addicted, and less.Identity is interesting. It's all made up and yet we hold so tightly to it. It even influences the content we see.I was talking to someone just yesterday about this, as she was telling me that she was rail thin in high school, and that was part of her identity. She said, "people stay attached to high school weight for some reason."Naturally, I questioned "people" because "people" is a made-up word for "a reflection of myself."She said that a lot of coaches in her feed say that women have an idea about remaining their high school weight, despite the fact that it doesn't serve them. The thing is, I don't see any of that in my feed. I never see anything about "a number on the scale." Nor do I remember my high school weight. I do remember what kind of cigarettes I smoked though: Newport 100'sI don't see people talking about "the scale" in my feed because I don't give a fuck about it. I see posts about consciousness and food. That's it. Consciousness and food. Before I was exploring consciousness, I saw only running posts, because Instagram was how I taught myself to run distance. I trained my algorithm to only show me posts of runners. I followed an ass ton of running accounts to receive more running content. "People" is an illusion. What we see in the feed is an extension of our brains. It's like one blown-up reticular activating system except all it wants to do is sell you shit.Allllll of this is just an extension of our created identities. And, as an "away from" person, I can tell you that we get more of what we focus on, even if it isn't the thing we want. When you're out drinking, nothing is happening. And if something is happening, the thing that you're enjoying is not the booze. The thing you're enjoying is being dulled by the booze because your entire human experience is being dulled by the booze. The grey matter in your brain is decreased. Your senses are dulled. I knew that a podcast would be complementary to what I did overall, so I bought a mic, and within two weeks, I had put my first few episodes out into the world.Neither of those episodes was perfect. In fact, even now, I wouldn't consider what I do to be “perfect” by any means.People spend their lives waiting to do things until they feel they're 100% “ready.”You're never going to be 100% ready, and the first time you do something, no matter how great you think you are, is going to be awkward as hell. The world celebrates those who celebrate themselves, and who are willing to share their gifts with as many people as possible. We have this idea that we should:1. Learn to do the thing2. Do the thing in secrecy3. Talk about what we did and gain all the approval once it's doneThat's actually not how it goes. It actually looks more like this:1. Start doing the thing2. Learn as you go3. Speak proudly the whole damn way through.”This week, I had my first call for my women's coaching community, “Day 1.”I was reminded once again about how showing up imperfect never really stops.I'd never led a coaching community before. I'd just been a part of one. Sure, I'd led groups, but this was new.I learned that I would always, whenever I'd start a new thing, have to show up imperfect at least once, and with every single bout of “showing up,” there would be learning that would continue to help me grow, change, and develop.I mean, who knew I wouldn't know how to share my damn Zoom screen two years into coaching? IDFK. It never came up! (lol)This was a refresher on Show Up Imperfect, because hell, it's been 50 episodes, and the concept is as fresh today as it was then.I talk a lot toward the end of the episode about identity, showing up today, showing up as you are, and building from the present moment.Enrollment for my Women's Coaching Community, “Day 1.” ends this Friday, 6/24/2022Check out this link if you're interested in joining, or email me andee@getthefuckoff.com

You Cannot Have a Checklist for Intuition

Recently, I've been writing a lot about how we fuck up intuition in the West.In my emails, I spoke about a fascinating conversation I had with someone about a retreat they held a few weekends back. The retreat had a focus on intuition, something people here in the West have a tough time with.As we were discussing it, this person told me that outside of the defined "structure" of what was planned to happen, it seemed like everyone attending lacked the ability to be intuitive. They were confused about what to "do," and seemed to want to be "taught" more than anything. They also found themselves unsettled by changes in the schedule, which had to happen because of weather, and things beyond anyone's control. The person leading this retreat has a background in education and spent many years working in that field. To them, the behavior stemming from our standardized education system was as clear as day.Students want to sit down and be taught by a teacher. They will only be taught by a teacher. And then they want a checklist of the 5-10 things they can do to be more intuitive (how oxymoronic,) and they want to merrily walk off on their way with a piece of paper saying they're qualified to be intuitive. The systems that have made you this way ARE DESIGNED TO DO SO to make you into a product-producing, drone-like peg. And the reason for THAT is because there are macro-level forces working to make billions of dollars at the expense of your sovereignty. Nobody gives a fuck about you. It's about money. You were trained to act standardized because of MONEY. They want every action you take to be of a design to keep SYSTEMS RUNNING.Take the fallacy of THE FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID that somehow convinced us we should be eating more grains than ever should be consumed by a human body. It didn't differentiate carbohydrates. It also didn't differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fats. Fast track to obesity. But the government pushed the model in schools to justify serving up government subsidies. Obesity causes disease but it's fine. BIG PHARMA has to take their cut.So, when you're looking to others to tell you what to do, that's because you were programmed like a rat to behave that way. Some macro-level system, somewhere, is depending on you to fall in line and ask an instructor "what's next?"There is no checklist for intuition. It can come through in various ways, and it's different for every person. In this podcast, I talk about the why behind us wanting one teacher with one message, and then I deep dive a little bit more into intuitive eating.I talk about two examples of two fictitious people, and how each of them may have to approach something like intuitive eating differently when teaching the brain to interpret the communication from the cells of the body.I talk fast, so there's a lot of stuff to digest in this one.I also talk about my new group coaching program for women: DAY 1.The link to learn more about Day 1. is: day1.getthefuckoff.comEnrollment will begin this week. Today's podcast interview is with one my the most amazing individuals I have ever crossed paths with, Sabrina Stanley. Sabrina is a professional ultrarunner for Adidas Terrex, and she specializes in mountainous, 100-mile races. She is the only American (male or female) to win Grand Raid the world's largest 100-mile race, revered as the toughest 100-miler in the world.Sabrina has won 14 of the last 15 ultras she's run, and she holds the FKT (fastest known time) for Nolan's 14- a 100-mile trail that includes summiting 14, 14,000 mile peaks. What's more impressive is that she set that FKT, then was beat by someone else about a month later, so she did ANOTHER attempt after 58 days, reclaiming her title.Sabrina and I worked together many years ago. She was a manager at the restaurant I worked at, and she left that job to take a minimum wage job in Colorado to pursue her passion in the life she wanted to create.I've been following her for years, and her mindset and determination have always been something that has inspired me to be better. Something she says a lot is that if there's a single other person who has accomplished what she wants to accomplish, she can too. When we got into the nitty-gritty of mindset, I wasn't surprised to hear that she takes all of it in micro-steps, from Day 1. "What can I do today?"When she was talking about developing a strategy, she mentioned finding people who do what you want to do, and then asking yourself questions about them down to the small details; questions like "what do they eat for breakfast?"Sabrina and I talked a lot about the mental game of being an athlete because everyone often is so focused on the physical. The physical is hard, but the mind has to go first. You have to not only believe you are capable but also, do the internal work to allow yourself to believe you are worthy and receive. ✨If you think something isn't for you, that's the mind, not the body. You can accomplish anything through hard work and beliefs. That shift also happens today, on Day 1. You can't look a million steps ahead and make it-- there would be too much inadequacy internally. You look at the steps you can take TODAY.A lot of us think that things aren't for us, and we attach a "story" as to WHY they aren't.Our work is to rise above that.Along those lines, we also talked about mental health, how a negative mindset affects the body, and the stress we place on ourselves when we create an internal reality that doesn't serve us. Sabrina talks about reaching out for help, and acknowledging that everyone does need it from time to time.We also talk about female empowerment, and how we can achieve goals that are larger than life… However, we absolutely must do the brain work, believe in ourselves, and take action every day to move forward.I hope you enjoy every bit of this interview. A couple of years ago, someone I follow posted "Day 1" on Instagram.I was like "Ooooh! I wonder what's up there!"The next day, they posted "Day 1.""Hmmm... I wonder what happened yesterday."Then the following day they posted "Day 1.""Ohhhkay, this is really weird."But after about a week, I realized the point. Every day... is Day 1.When I started coaching women on their health limiting beliefs, many of them found the phrase "Day 1" to be triggering."It reminds me of the first day of a diet," I'd hear.Yet, every time I asked, "And what day did you have the greatest motivation?"Every single one of them said "Day 1."What's the most defeating day of anything? Not Day 1.When I was getting my run coaching certification, they asked "what's the biggest challenge for a beginner runner on Day 1? Get them to come back on Day 2."Day 2 is an ugly, defeatist day. But Day 1? Day 1 is limitless possibility.I wrote a few months ago about why I don't count days in sobriety. I don't need a rope tied to a point in the past so I can just obsess over how long it has been. Every day is Day 1.Granted, sobriety for me, as my friend MartinJon would say, is "a beverage choice." I never created a structure to make it mean something disempowering, and unlike many people, I began my recovery nearly two years before I finally let go of alcohol. When I wrote a few months ago about a fictitious scenario of someone binge drinking today after a long dry period, someone on my list wrote to me about having a visceral reaction to that. That doesn't surprise me. Because to that person, it was likely seen as an absolute failure. Because now, we need to have another Day 1, and then subsequently.. a DAY TWO. Defeatist, burned out, "I'm a big failure" DAY TWO.If someone doesn't drink for 700 days, and drinks on Day 701, if they don't drink the following day then they have 701 days of sobriety. Not 1.Day counting is triggering. What if every day was Day 1?What a nice thought, Andee.No. For real. Every morning, I wake up and I say "Day 1." I've done this every morning since Monday, March 16th, 2020.That was the day New York City essentially shut down because of COVID, and I started building my life in a new direction.I remember every tiny action I have taken since then. I needed a new life. There was no other option.I knew thinking big wasn't going to work, so I'd say "Day 1. What's here? What can I build from today?"What is here now, and what can I do right now?Present moment awareness. It's the crucial piece many people miss. We're always thinking way off into the future, but the subconscious mind doesn't care about psychological time. It knows now and only now.Since the beginning of 2020, I've run 5,079 miles. According to Strava, that's 774 hours of running. That seems like a big number, but it isn't to me. That happened step-by-step, thump thump, right now, on Day 1. The number never got big in my mind. It's just Day 1. What can I do today... on Day 1?That includes many, MANY days of not running, and just relaxing. That includes many days of "fuck this I'm staying in bed." It includes a few vacations and one cross-country road trip where I sat in the car for days on end. It includes lots and lots- probably too much time sitting on my ass in front of the computer. And lots and lots of time lying in bed watching TV.Day 1. Can I dedicate a half hour to this today? A half-hour... out of my whole day... to this? Day 1.I don't feel stressed or tired at all. That's what happens when it's just Day 1. Every day. When I come home from that run, I ask myself- what can I build from the existing structure that's standing before me?What can YOU build? Today... On Day 1?After much resistance, I am building a group program for women. I plan to launch it next month- I'm aiming for mid-June. I already have reached out to the first few women that I want to be in the program, people I think will help build the culture.Training for Bubba Gump, and being a beta tester for Wisdom app taught me a lot about how the initial core group of people really mold and shape the culture of a community. After years of being a voice in other people's communities, I am creating one of my own.I'll be writing about it more as I take more solid action to get it going.I want it to be a great experience for everyone, so I have an idea of how I want it to look, tech-wise. Now it's just thump thump.ALSO, POWER HOURS are continuing through the next TWO WEEKS. Embodiment, and the “Manual Override”

I've been talking in my various social outlets recently about embodiment.I posed a question on Wisdom app to some others about how you guide a person to embody the teachings they have learned. To go a little deeper into embodiment, I want to talk about women, and competition. This came up in the Wisdom conversation, and myself and this awesome person named Marccella discussed how women are raised not to support one another, but to fiercely compete. This is societal, generational, cultural, and all that shit... We're getting better, but we carry the subliminal, deep-rooted programming that was handed down to us from our parents and grandparents, and that pretty much came without our consent.I had a conversation with another female coach just two weeks ago about this same idea, the idea that as women, we want to be that "one stop shop" that can do it all!Because why? Survival.Through generations, women have been taught that they must be the most beautiful, the most desirable, the smartest, the funniest, the THINNEST, the TALLEST, the best mother, etc etc... We have to do everything including change the oil in your car. Because if not, "no man will want us," and you need a man to survive.Nowadays, we don't logically think "if I help another woman, I'll die," but the issues are in the tissues.Years ago, sometimes things or opportunities would pop up, and I would think "this might not be appropriate for me, but "insert name" would really benefit."I'd go to send "insert name" that thing, and my body mind would tighten up, react, and yell "DO NOT DO THAT! IF THEY HAVE MORE, YOU WILL HAVE LESS! Then you'll starve to death and the rent won't get paid!"That's when I learned to exercise THE MANUAL OVERRIDE.The manual override, the main key to embodiment. The manual override is when Higher you takes what you know, and acts in defiance of the body mind.I know that despite what I have been handed down culturally and generationally, women are not competition. In fact, I pride myself in having a large circle of strong, empowered women around me both as friends and colleagues. This came from my willingness to manually override my own shit until the point it was embodied.I said "I'm going to invite all of you in, even though to do so gives me a generous helping of anxiety."Whatever type of thing you're having trouble with, remember, it isn't real. It's a program that is running in your brain through neural pathways that have been solidified through your life.Your brain is lazy, doesn't like change, and is literally designed to keep you alive. If you have anxiety about embodying something new, congratulations. The brain is doing its job.The BODY responds to the brain to keep us safe, hence the clenching feeling you get.So, if someone laughed at you when you were four years old, you may have started to build a protective program then. 40 years later, you're having trouble figuring out why you're not posting more on social media. You go to post, your body feels anxious, your mind runs down the laundry list of everyone who is going to hate you and smash out the windows in your car, and boom... you return to the sofa and watch Real Housewives.Completely illogical, but the brain is doing its job.MANUAL OVERRIDE.Logically, you know that isn't going to happen. Now, the work is to override the program until it is embodied. Time after time after time after time. This is an example of learning to use the brain differently.FRIDAY POWER HOURS BEGAN LAST WEEK.I'm doing this every Friday for the month of May.Power hours-- these are 90 minutes, very powerful, where we will dive into ONE AREA of your life where you can't seem to budge.DURING that 90 minutes, you won't learn what to do, but rather, how to operate YOUR BRAIN differently.Because you already know what to do. Obviously. This is the link. Email me if you have questions.

"Healthy People Are Obnoxious" (No, the People You're Looking at Aren't "Healthy" Either)

One of the bigger identity pieces I (and many people I've worked with) have had to overcome is getting past the inability to become "like" the people we can't stand. In this episode, I introduce and explain the concept of "everything in service." It's a great reframe if you're struggling with your identity in relation to behavior change.I used to tell the story “healthy people are obnoxious.”It turns out, I was the obnoxious one. I was obnoxious because the way I was acting was not in SERVICE to myself, but rather to SPITE myself.Service > SpiteAre what we see as “healthy” people obnoxious? They can be. If they're in spite, rather than service, absolutely. And then, are they really “healthy?”So, for example, a person with a sculpted body… Are they obnoxious? If they're restricting themselves, not eating, in constant brain fog, obsessive about control/macros— they're in spite rather than service. And that's obnoxious.THE SAME IS TRUE for a person who eats a pint of ice cream every night. That's spite, rather than service.Service to yourself and others is not obnoxious. It's the path of love.Don't resist the information in this podcast. You might be the obnoxious one. Also, as promised in the episode, HERE IS THE LINK for FRIDAY POWER HOURS in May. (https://getthefuckoff.com/friday-power-hours)I'm going to be doing 90-minute power hours to help YOU work through that one teeeeeeeny tiny area you can't seem to get clarity on.We'll meet on Zoom, deep dive into it, work it out, turn it inside out, up down and sideways, and you'll walk away from it with a whole new perspective. You'll have an action plan for the following Monday, and a list of micro-steps you can proceed with throughout the following week. We'll exchange notes in Google Drive (just like I do with my long-term clients) and also schedule a 15-minute follow-up a week later to discuss your progress. It's short. It's sweet. It's not obnoxious.

The Need For IMMEDIATE Resolution: On Relationship Disagreements

Whenever we have a disagreement in a relationship, we want to “resolve it right away.”This is because in our society, we love immediate gratification. What we really want is “lip service” a lot of the time- someone to tell us “all is OK” so we can move along. In this episode I break down some facets of interpersonal communication, and place arguments into two groups:“One-Offs”“Repetitive Cycles.”If an argument is part of a “repetitive cycle,” unfortunately, the lip service (and subsequent reinforcement) isn't going to solve the issue. If you're ready to learn about the stubbornness of the ego, check this one out.ALSO- I did address “the slap heard ‘round the world,” because I'm just THAT timely. :: bows ::To join the Western Rebellion, visit breakfree.getthefuckoff.com
