UN-Backed Hunger Monitor Declares Famine in Gaza City, Warns of Rapid Spread On August 15, 2025, the United Nations-endorsed food security monitoring body confirmed that famine conditions exist in Gaza Governorate, including Gaza City.This declaration followed a sharp escalation of conflict, restricted food access, and a near-total Israeli blockade imposed earlier this year, partially eased last month.The IPC report states over half a million people face catastrophic conditions marked by starvation, destitution, and death after 22 months of conflict.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called famine a "man-made disaster" and said those obligated to act "are failing," emphasizing a critical need for an immediate ceasefire.The famine is projected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis governorates, affecting nearly 641,000 people and underscoring urgent humanitarian intervention needs.Air Canada vs Flight Attendant Flight attendants play a critical role in keeping Canadian passengers and airline crew safe as they travel. They deserve to be compensated and treated fairly at all times. The Government of Canada is aware of the concerning allegations regarding the working conditions and pay of federally regulated flight attendants. The government is committed to protecting workers and supporting productive and fair workplaces the Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, Patty Hajdu, announced the launch of a probe on unpaid work in the airline sector. Municipal Funding for Climate Adaption At a news conference in Dartmouth, N.S., Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin announces $5.2 million in funding to support 70 municipal climate adaptation projects across Canada. The funding will be distributed through the Federation of Canadian Municipality's Green Municipal Fund, a federally-funded initiative that supports local environmental projects. Dabrusin is joined by Brittany Merrifield, mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield and Federation of Canadian Municipalities board member. China Tarrifs on Canola Oil Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe hold a press conference in Saskatoon alongside Kody Blois, parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Mark Carney. Charles Glass is an American British author, journalist, broadcaster and publisher specializing in the Middle East and the Second World War. Amid reports of a fragile calm in Syria's Sweida governorate, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed on Monday that it is helping to provide assistance to those displaced by the violence – and the country's many returnees.The development follows deadly clashes between Bedouin and Druze communities in Sweida that has drawn in Syrian government forces and the Israeli military, highlighting the regional implications of unresolved tensions inside Syria.With more on the crisis and the challenges facing Syrians returning home after well over a decade of civil war, here's WFP's head of emergency communications, Jonathan Dumont, with UN News's Daniel Johnson in Geneva.

Nearly half a million people in Gaza now face starvation, according to a new report from the IPC, the international panel of famine experts who advise the United Nations.For more than ten weeks, Israel has halted the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, to pressure Hamas to release Israeli hostages. Israel accuses Hamas of seizing aid, selling it on the black market and using aid distribution to reinforce its control of Gaza.The UN says hundreds of truckloads of lifesaving supplies are waiting at the border. Meanwhile, inside Gaza, food is scarce. Humanitarian groups like the UN World Food Programme (WFP) exhausted supplies of basic staples weeks ago, forcing them to shut down their kitchens and bakeries, and everyday Palestinians are grinding up pasta and lentils to make flour for bread. Antoine Renard of the WFP says when he was in Gaza last week, wheat flour was selling for $10 a pound.
