Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has officially published new draft regulations that would restrict how plant-based meat alternatives are labelled in South Africa. Under these new rules, products like vegan sausages, mushroom biltong, or plant-based chicken nuggets would no longer be allowed to use traditional meat-related terms on their packaging. The regulations target “meat analogue products” – foods designed to mimic the appearance, flavour, and texture of real meat – and aim to ensure clearer labelling for consumers. The law is set to take effect in a year’s time. ● Products can still be called things like "soya sausage" or "veggie burger," but terms like “chicken style” or “bacon style” using altered spellings or mimicking meat terms will be restricted unless clearly labeled as plant-based. ● A minimum protein requirement (9%) has been introduced for products marketed as meat alternatives, ensuring a nutritional baseline for those substituting meat. ● The plant-based industry continues to grow, with major retailers and fast-food chains across South Africa offering vegan Hang out with Anele and The Club on 947 every weekday morning. Religious traditions have played a significant role in shaping many familiar dishes. Over the centuries, abstaining from eating meat and other animal products for spiritual reasons led to creative, plant-based recipes that have since become cultural staples. I think this matters because it helps legitimize plant-based eating as something deeply rooted in cultural and historical tradition—not a fad or modern invention. It reminds us that meatless eating has long been a meaningful, creative, and essential part of human food culture, shaped by values, ethics, and necessity. And by centering these stories in our collective memory, we reclaim a rich legacy—and challenge the idea that animal products must, or always have, sat at the center of every meal. Enjoy! ——————

In addition to being almost 10ft tall, he led the Vegetarian Society of Denmark's efforts in getting the Danish government to invest over 110 million Euros in plant-based foods and develop an Action Plan to boost plant-based foods in the country. Given this is one of the most significant policy wins the animal advocacy and plant-based movement has seen in recent years, we chat about how they built the political will to achieve this. The Green Party leader says there are no sitting MPs named and shamed in the recent report on foreign interference. Elizabeth May says she's read it, and wants all the speculation about disloyal parliamentarians to stop. Also: Offers and counter offers for a ceasefire in Gaza. But the positions of Israel and Hamas… are still unclear.Plus: Plant-based but ultra-processed is bad news for hearts. That's the finding of a new study from the British medical journal, The Lancet. The study of 100,000 people found that these processed foods may contribute to cardiovascular disease and even death.
Is there a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to stop the plant-based food movement in its tracks? The Freedom Food Alliance, led by renowned digital media expert Robbie Lockie, has just released a detailed report which makes that case. Harvesting Denial, Distractions and Deception: Understanding Animal Agriculture's Disinformation Strategies and Exploring Solutions argues that the meat industry - though companies, lobbyists, trade groups, checkoff programs, influencers and so-called experts and industry-backed academics - is waging a full-scale misinformation and disinformation campaign against vegan products and the plant-based movement in general. This is happening at our own peril, as the climate crisis worsens and advertiser-based mainstream media basically ignores one of the biggest causes: animal agriculture. The media runs story after story attacking plant-based meat alternatives as processed while failing to mention that processed meat is officially cancer-causing, according to the World Health Organization. When the World Bank recently called for governments to shift away from subsidizing meat and dairy and embrace alternatives proteins, that urgent recommendation was ignored by mainstream media. So, what can we do to save ourselves, animals and the planet? Let's find out from Robbie Lockie, one of the founders of Plant Based News whose new campaign is getting the real story out to the world before it's too late. You may be familiar with the Greek island of Ikaria through the popularity of “Blue Zones” and the idea that these regions of the world can provide insights into living longer, healthier lives. Yet as with most trends around diet and health, there is so much unspoken about the nuances of what an Ikarian lifestyle and diet entails, and the cultural relationships that Ikarians have with their food and communities. My guest today is Diane Kochilas, who is here to share her insights on these relationships with food through her new cookbook, The Ikaria Way. Diane has been at the forefront of bringing healthy, delicious Greek and Mediterranean cuisine to a wide international audience for over 25 years. She is the host and co-executive producer of the award-winning PBS show, My Greek Table, and she runs the Glorious Greek Cooking school on her native island Ikaria. She's released 18 cookbooks on Greek cuisine, and has consulted with American universties to bring healthy Greek foods to their dining programs. Today, Diane unpacks what it means to live and eat in the spirit of the Ikarians, discusses the differences between food preparation and preservation in Greece compared to other Mediterranean cultures, and unpacks how the anxiety and disconnection between North Americans and their food has shaped how we think about cooking and eating, and how she navigates these perspectives through her recipes.
