Is there a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to stop the plant-based food movement in its tracks? The Freedom Food Alliance, led by renowned digital media expert Robbie Lockie, has just released a detailed report which makes that case. Harvesting Denial, Distractions and Deception: Understanding Animal Agriculture's Disinformation Strategies and Exploring Solutions argues that the meat industry - though companies, lobbyists, trade groups, checkoff programs, influencers and so-called experts and industry-backed academics - is waging a full-scale misinformation and disinformation campaign against vegan products and the plant-based movement in general. This is happening at our own peril, as the climate crisis worsens and advertiser-based mainstream media basically ignores one of the biggest causes: animal agriculture. The media runs story after story attacking plant-based meat alternatives as processed while failing to mention that processed meat is officially cancer-causing, according to the World Health Organization. When the World Bank recently called for governments to shift away from subsidizing meat and dairy and embrace alternatives proteins, that urgent recommendation was ignored by mainstream media. So, what can we do to save ourselves, animals and the planet? Anna Tseng, a plant-based registered dietician with a master's degree in Public Health Nutrition and founder of Plant Nourished, is here to help clear things up. Plant-based eating is centered on plant foods rather than meat, with whole plant-based foods being the focus. Plant-based diets are an umbrella term that covers different types of plant-centered diets, such as vegetarian, vegan, and whole-food plant-based diets. The whole food plant-based diet is focused on minimally processed or unprocessed whole plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes. Plant-based eating is not an all-or-nothing approach. A lot of women in my community are perimenopausal and menopausal, so I had to ask Anna for her insight on food and menopausal symptoms. We both agree that changing the way we eat and our lifestyle may seem overwhelming, but by taking small steps we can improve our health and eliminate chronic diseases. To look at Geoff Palmer today, there is no obvious trace of a troubled background. Yet, at one point, Geoff lived in a private prison of a dark depression with no apparent way out. Just three days before his 18th birthday, Geoff Palmer's father, whom he had a very close relationship with, passed on. This was the start of descending into an emotional bottom. Soon after, Geoff's mother and brother passed away taking him deeper into what he describes as a dark hole.   Finding solace in drugs and alcohol, Goeff thought of taking his life almost daily. He felt as if he was merely existing with no clear purpose or direction. A chance meeting with a man who became a mentor to Geoff, turned his life around. As if a light switch were turned on, Geoff's addictions disappeared, and his zest for life transformed from the dark hole of depression to one where he gained clarity on his life's purpose. His transformation included going from a meat eater to one of having no desire to consume animals in any form.  “I realized I could never hurt animals again and became 100% plant-based instantly,” Geoff states. “I also saw a connection to depression and putting dead energy into my body.” Embracing a new way of life, Geoff knew his existence was about service.
