Hundreds of dollars of counterfeit notes have been palmed off in Waikato, with retailers being warned to keep a sharp eye out during the Xmas rush. Since October police say there's been seven incidents with alleged fake notes, including fifties, twenties and ten dollar notes. And they've been across Waikato including Hamilton East, Te Rapa, Frankton, Te Awamutu, Beerescourt, and Paeroa. In one case, a few real bills were mixed in with a significant wadge counterfeits. Waikato Prevention Manager Inspector Hywel Jones reckons the fakes are pretty good. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6342438139112

The National Party candidate who is the frontrunner to win the Hamilton East electorate has been a staunch opponent of fluoridation of water, vaccine mandates and has supported groups that spread misinformation. In social media posts, Ryan Hamilton claimed Covid deaths had been inflated and once claimed poverty is not a reason to fluoridate water because most of the poor drank Raro. The revelations come in a bonus episode of RNZ's Undercurrent documentary podcast, which has just dropped online. No-one from the National Party was willing to come on the programme Monday morning to discuss this story. Susie Ferguson has more.

Dr Gaurav Sharma is still hoping for an independent investigation. The MP for Hamilton East was expelled from Labour's caucus at a meeting on Tuesday morning. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said as far as Labour's caucus is concerned, the Sharma saga is over. Sharma will now sit in Parliament as an independent MP. He is still a member of the wider Labour Party, although it is now very likely he will be expelled from that too. He told Heather du Plessis-Allan he's going strong and this is about getting fair treatment. "The message this sends is that if your boss is powerful enough, they can get away with anything and it's the wrong message to send from parliament to all the New Zealanders out there.” LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Experiencing miscarriage is, without a doubt, devastating. And my guest on this episode is campaigning for a change in the law around the paid leave that parents are entitled to, when this happens. Angela Crawley is MP for Lanark and Hamilton East and wants the government to introduce a statutory requirement for employers to provide three days of paid miscarriage leave for parents who experience a miscarriage before 24 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, bereavement legislation entitles parents who lose a baby after 24 weeks to two weeks of paid bereavement leave. But there's nothing in place before that. Angela recently became a parent when her partner gave birth to their first baby in January, so as well as her campaign, we discuss sleepless nights and how as a same sex couple, they juggle the parenting. You can follow Angela and the progress of the campaign on Twitter. Scotland's Choice In this second episode of Scotland's Choice, Drew discusses the impact choices made at Westminster have on children born here and those whose home it has become with Angela Crawley, MP for Lanark and Hamilton East. Drew and Angela discuss her extensive work on child poverty and the impact of austerity policies on Scotland's children. In contrast to the Scottish Parliament, which has legislated to eradicate child poverty and has clear measurable targets to tackle poverty, the UK Government has repealed large parts of the Child Poverty Act 2010, including income-based child poverty targets. In doing so, they have sought to remove accountability for the effect its draconian welfare policies have on children. Drew and Angela also touch on the development of the Scottish Parliament voting unanimously to place the United Nations Rights of the Child into Scots law – a move, the UK Government is shamefully challenging in the courts. With only 15% powers, the Scottish Government has already set out a landmark legislative programme to protect Scotland's children and tackle child poverty, but how much more could be done with all the powers of an independent country? The pair also chat about the response from Scottish communities to the refugee crisis and how the hostile environment approach at Westminister has impacted the safety and well-being of vulnerable children. Scotland's communities showed just how welcoming a nation we are - leaving the same question we always pose, how much more could be done with the full powers of any other independent nation. Waikato police have recovered a Goldie painting stolen during the burglary of a Hamilton home. The painting, Sleep 'tis a gentle thing, by New Zealand artist CF Goldie, was taken alongside numerous other unique artworks and antiques in the burglary of a Hamilton East home between December 27, 2020, and January 3, 2021.Police say that while the painting is yet to be thoroughly examined, it appears to be undamaged. The owners had been informed and were very happy to hear that it had been found. The stolen painting was found at the weekend as police continued their investigation into the burglary.International Art Gallery director Richard Thomson said the painting was a "million dollar plus" artwork."I've sold dozens of Goldies, and that is a really good example of his work, has all the hallmarks."Art Crime Research Trust Chair Penelope Jackson told Heather du Plessis-Allan she's is delighted."If you look at art crime internationally in terms of theft, they reckon in America only 5-10 percent of stolen artworks are ever recovered."Three men, all of whom have name suppression, have been charged over the incident and are currently facing burglary charges in the Hamilton District Court.
