Summary In this episode of the Building Better Cultures podcast, Scott McInnes discusses the challenges faced by mid-management in organizations, drawing insights from the Mind the Gap research report. Guests Katy Lumsden and Neil O'Brien share their experiences and perspectives on the evolving roles of managers and leaders, the importance of culture, and the need for effective communication and training. The conversation highlights the significance of psychological safety, resilience, and the necessity for managers to engage in tough conversations while fostering a supportive environment. Takeaways The mid-management layer faces unique challenges from both above and below. Commonalities in organizational challenges can provide reassurance and strength. Leadership and management roles are increasingly blurred in modern organizations. Managers need to be equipped with tools to foster culture and engagement. The say-do gap highlights discrepancies between senior leadership intentions and managerial actions. Tough conversations are essential for growth but often avoided due to fear. Psychological safety is misunderstood and misapplied in many organizations. Resilience in younger generations may differ from previous cohorts. Effective management requires understanding individual team members deeply. Training for managers should focus on practical skills for modern challenges. Matthew Lumsden is my special guest on this August 2025 It's All Possible Podcast. Matthew a lawyer by profession is the author of "Shibui, The Persimmon Principles" his book on the Japanese Culture of Shibui. Matthew and I met during his days as a global leader at the Australian arm of global investment firm Vanguard and we have stayed connected ever since.Matthew has been passionate about Japanese culture and their way of life for many years which led him during his high school years to spend time living with a Japanese family as part of an exhange program and later working in Japan. In typical Matthew style, he spent time back in Japan recently researching for this incredible book, Shibui.Matthew is a person of possibility through and through. This means he is human and on his way to discovering his purpose he pushed the limit career wise which ended up in burn out and the internal conversation of "am I living my true purpose". It was this burn out that led to the breakthrough of Matthew going back to his passions and writing the book Shibui. In this podcast Matthew opens up about how he has used the concepts of Shibui to shape his personal and business life. He also openly discusses his journey to burn out and how we can fall into the traps of a driven life and what to do to ensure we come out of it in a better position. We then discuss the essential elements of Shibui which are Simplicity, Subtlety, Impermanence and Imperfection and how they can be applied to our personal and business lives. I hope you enjoy Matthew and the concepts of Shibui. Shibui is available online and at all good bookshops and Matthew can be found on LinkedIn , Instagram and Tik Tok and at https://www.shibuiadvisory.com/
In this special live episode of The Voice of Retail, recorded at RCC STORE 2025, I sit down with two retail thought leaders: Simone Lumsden, Senior Vice-President, Triangle Customer Loyalty and Triangle Retail Media, Canadian Tire Corporation, and Sandra Duff, Founder and Principal at Another Story Consulting. Together, we explore what it takes to deliver loyalty, excitement, and differentiation in an increasingly parity-driven retail environment.Simone shares how Canadian Tire is evolving its Triangle Rewards program beyond the traditional notion of loyalty. From its iconic paper money origins to a modern digital currency used across banners, Triangle is now designed to be simple, flexible, and personal. Simone explains how Canadian Tire is using customer data to deliver meaningful value through personalized offers and experiences, while acknowledging there's still work to be done to make those offers more relevant and engaging.Sandra contributes powerful insights drawn from her years of customer research, highlighting the crucial distinction between "jobs" and "joys" in retail. She stresses that while table stakes, such as price and convenience, must be met, fun and inspiration are what truly differentiate. Together, we discuss how in-store experiences must move beyond transactions to create environments that delight and connect with customers on an emotional level. The conversation shifts to retail media, where Simone emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between monetization and the customer experience. She describes how Canadian Tire is introducing in-store and digital retail media in non-intrusive, contextually relevant ways, avoiding the cluttered, disruptive examples seen elsewhere. Sandra reinforces that strong customer insights should never live in silos, but should empower every team—from marketing to store associates—to deliver differentiated value. We also delve into innovation and experimentation—from new flagship formats at Sport Chek and Mark's, to coalition partnerships, and the rise of agentic AI in shaping the future of shopping journeys. Simone encourages retailers to stay curious and test new approaches without fear of past failures, while Sandra calls for more real-time feedback loops and smaller-scale pilot programs to learn what resonates most. 1st Sergeant Bill Lumsden served in World War II as a Paratrooper and Pathfinder. Pathfinders were paratroopers that dropped into enemy territory first, tasked with setting up signals that would direct the rest of the paratrooper fleet into the correct landing zones. Since they were often the first soldiers sent across enemy lines, this was an incredibly dangerous job. As a Pathfinder Pilot, it was Pedone's job to fly the Pathfinders into enemy territory. Lumsden parachuted into enemy territory ahead of the Invasion of France, but was heavily injured after a hard landing and a skirmish with a German soldier. We have a new series this summer on the Morning Show called "Beach, Please!", where we'll feature some of the best coastlines in the province. And we're starting the series in the Lumsden area. For years, the municipally-run Lumsden North beach was a hidden treasure, however in 2022, the rest of the province found out about it. The CBC's Leigh Anne Power went to the beach to find out more.
