Alexander Horwath's Henry Fonda for President stands among the most notable releases of a still-young year, is certainly the most lauded essay film in recent memory, and was assuredly of personal interest when my friend Zach Lewis offered his approval. As adventurous and open-minded a cinephile as any I know, Zach has equal-parts interest in both the films of Henry Fonda and essayistic, landscape-centered cinema––some Thom Anderson or Harun Farocki come to mind with the former, James Benning the latter––in which Horwath is trading here. I couldn't have been happier to connect with him to discuss the film, and hope our chat is fruitful for you in turn.

Historic buildings collapsing from neglect, a homeless crisis worsening, a housing secretariate clapping for their reports and a Mayor's task force on accountability where no one shows up - leadership expert Graham Crawford and host Laura Babcock analyze Mayor Andrea Horwath's near invisibility a Mayor and failure to stand up to Premier Ford and fight for Hamilton. Hamilton is at a critical juncture, and the evidence is all around us: historic buildings crumbling due to neglect, a growing homeless crisis, and a leadership that seems more focused on self-congratulation than action. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the alarming state of our city. As leadership expert Graham Crawford points out, Mayor Andrea Horwath's near-invisibility is a significant concern. We deserve a mayor who will actively fight for our community and challenge Premier Ford's decisions that impact Hamilton. Instead, we have a task force on accountability where attendance is a problem and reports that garner applause rather than tangible change. It's time for us to demand more from our elected officials. We need proactive leadership that prioritizes the well-being of our residents and the preservation of our historical legacy. Our city deserves more than just reports; it deserves a leader who will stand up, speak out, and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future for all. Hamilton needs hope. Hosted on Acast.

How clear is the direction you have for the organization, for where you're going? Do you have clear direction for your team? Research by Gallup over the last 30 years with 10 million managers shows that only 22% of employees think that their leadership team has set clear direction for the business. This concerning piece of information underscores the dire need to reeducate business leaders in being strategic. Key to this is the concept of strategic fitness, which today's guest discusses. One of the key takeaways from the conversation with Rich Horwath was the importance of focusing on expertise rather than solely on experience during succession planning. Rich, a strategic strategy facilitator, coach to executive leadership teams, bestselling author, and expert commentator on business strategy, emphasized the need to identify the 2 or 3 key skills and behaviors that drive expertise in a particular role. This approach ensures that the right competencies are being developed and recognized, setting the stage for a more effective succession process.Rich delved into the significance of taking a strategic look at succession planning and the use of talent scorecards. Rich explained that these scorecards are instrumental in evaluating an employee's technical capabilities, people leadership, and executive skills. Two Dudes are joined by cartoonist Madeline Horwath to discuss Studio Ghibli's seminal classic, Grave of the Fireflies (1988). Directed by Isao Takahata and released the same year as My Neighbor Totoro, this film strikes a markedly more somber note as it follows two siblings orphaned during WWII. Considered by many to be one of (if not) the greatest animated films of all time, this devastating meditation on the human cost of war is a must-see.
