Short show notes - long show notes here We have a special guest joining us for the performance topic, Scott Ballentine. What's New New news for CustomPac removal date, which has been extended past January 2022. The reason was to accommodate the desired Data Set Merge capability in z/OSMF which customers needed. For the new withdrawl date, it is planned to be announced in 2Q2022. Mainframe - Only in V2.5 This topic was looking at some new functions that are only in z/OS V2.5. Data Set File System, planned to be available in 1Q 2022. Dynamic Change Master Catalog RACF data base encryption has a statement of direction. Increase z/OS Memory limit above 4TB to 16TB. More Concurrently ”Open” VSAM Linear Datasets. Db2 exploits with Apar PH09189, and APAR PH33238 is suggested. ISPF Updates to ISPF in support of PDSE V2 member generations, and SUBMIT command to add an optional parameter SUBSYS. Access Method Services - IDCAMS - DELETE MASK has two new options TEST and EXCLUDE z/OS Encryption Readiness Technology zERT There's a lot of other stuff rolled back to V2.4 Performance - What's the Use? - with special guest Scott Ballentine This discussion is a summary from a joint presentation on Usage Data and IFAUSAGE The topic is motivational because customers can get a lot of value of out this usage data, and understand the provenance of IFAUSAGE data. A macro vendors or anybody use can use to show which products are used and how. It can show names: Product Vendor, Name, ID, Version, Qualifier, Show numbers: Product TCB, Product SRB, FUNCTIONDATA The data is ostensibly for SCRT, which is fed by SMF 70 and SMF 89 Scott talked about encoding via IFAUSAGE, appears in SMF 30 and 89-1 SMF 89-1: Software Levels query, Db2 / MQ subsystems query SMF 30: Topology (e.g. CICS connecting to Db2 or MQ), Some numbers (Connections' CPU) Both SMF 30 and 89: FUNCTIONDATA Examples were mentioned that might inspire developers to think about how they code IFAUSAGE Hope is developers will delight customers by using IFAUSAGE right, and customers will take advantage in the way shown with reporting examples. Topics - Choices, Choices This topics is about how to choose a language to use for which purpose. Different languages were discussed for different needs. Use Case: Serving HTML? Host consideration: Running on e.g. laptop? Host consideration: Running on z/OS? Overall lesson: Choose the language that respects the problem at hand. SDSF is, to many, the part of ISPF that lets you manage jobs and fire off the occasional command, but not many truly appreciate its journey and just how deep those hooks go into the core of the OS. Ken Jonas and Rob Scott stop by this episode to shed some insight into SDSF and what the future may hold for such a powerful tool.

This title was released in July 2020. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until August 31st 2020, and on general sale after this date. It's the near future, and mankind has expanded its presence in space. Maintaining law and order beyond Earth is the responsibility of the International Space Police Force, known colloquially as the Star Cops. Their leader is Commander Nathan Spring. There are no Star Cops on Mars, and Nathan Spring intends to put that right. He travels to the red planet hoping to rally the colonists’ support for setting up an ISPF office, but he faces resistance from those who feel Mars has no need of police. Soon, though, Nathan and his officers are involved in incidents of theft, violence and murder. They may get the chance to prove they’re needed, if they can get through their investigations alive. 2.4 Bodies of Evidence by Andrew Smith On the moon, shortly before Nathan, Kenzy and Devis leave for Mars, disaster strikes when the shuttle Ganymede crash lands on the lunar surface. The tragedy becomes something more sinister when Priya finds dismembered bodies hidden in the shuttle. But attempts to investigate are obstructed by higher authorities on Earth. Before Nathan departs for Mars, he instructs Priya and Paul to investigate the crash, in defiance of his superiors’ orders. If they don’t find the evidence they need, it could be the end of all their careers. 2.5 Human Kind by Helen Goldwyn A scared medic, on the run from her colony, seeks the help of the Star Cops. She offers information about a crime, but she demands legal immunity, and guarantees for her safety before she’ll talk. A visitor from Earth seems particularly determined to stop the Star Cops gaining a foothold on Mars and calls a meeting of colony leaders in an attempt to end their efforts once and for all. When one of his officers is kidnapped, Nathan begins to wonder who he can trust on this planet. 2.6 The Highest Ground by Andrew Smith The conspiracy is revealed, and its leader is desperate to silence the Star Cops. An armed squad closes in on Nathan, his officers and their Martian allies, leading to a siege in the shadow of Olympus Mons, the highest mountain in the solar system. And a violent confrontation on its slopes. It’s time for some to decide where their loyalties truly lie before it’s too late...

Here are the show notes for Episode 3 "Getting Better". Follow Up Following up the Episode 1 "Topics" item on Markdown, Martin talked about John Gruber's Daring Fireball Dingus page which lets you paste in Markdown and see the HTML generated from it (and how the HTML is rendered). Also following up on an Episode 1 item, but this time the "Mainframe" item, Marna talked about her personal problem with ISPF 3.17 Mount Table right / left she was seeing before. It was the PF key definition (which she suspected all along), however defining 12 PF keys did the trick. Mainframe Our "Mainframe" topic included our first guest, Glenn Wilcock, a DFSMS architect specializing in HSM. Glenn talked about a very important function - using zEnterprise Data Compression (zEDC) for HSM. He discussed some staggering excellent numbers for CPU reduction, throughput improvement, and storage usage reduction. A win on all three fronts. Here are some of the links that you can use to get more information about this topic zEDC Bulletin zEDC Redbook DFSMSdss CPU Reduction APAR OA48394 Performance Our "Performance" item was a discussion on one of Martin's "2016 Conference Season" presentations: "How To Be A Better Performance Specialist". Two particular points arising: We'll publish a link to the slides when they hit Slideshare, probably after the 2016 IBM z Systems Technical University, 13 - 17 June, Munich, Germany. This presentation might interest a wider audience than just Performance and Capacity people. You might get something out of it even if you've been around for a while. Topics Under "Topics" we discussed mind mapping and how we use it for this podcast and other uses, such as depicting relationships between CICS systems and the DB2 subsystems they attach to. Martin mentioned Freemind, an open source cross-platform mindmapping tool, available from here. He also mentioned the proprietary iThoughts, which has an iOS Version and a macOS version. Data is interchangeable between these two and Martin uses both versions, with the iOS version on his iPad Pro and his iPhone. Here are the show notes for Episode 1 “A Luta Continua” (“The Struggle Continues”). Mainframe Our “Mainframe” topic is about the new z/OS V2.2 ISPF 3.17 Mount Table enhancement. To try it out on z/OS V2.2: ISPF 3.17, then File_Systems pull down, then the new options are #1 or #2. Type “x” for toggling between expanding and contracting. Use the Help pulldown for more commands available. Performance Our “Performance” topic is about long term page fixing DB2 buffer pools, and a related question: Whether to use 1MB pages. Topics Under “Topics” we discussed Markdown, a very easy way of creating formatted text. (In fact these notes were written in Markdown using a plain text editor on Linux.) Not that we are heavy users of Android apps there are apparently plenty of Markdown tools there too. See here. Martin briefly mentioned the possibility of driving Python's Markdown processor Python Markdown on z/OS using Jython (which is Python interpreted using Java). In our latest episode, we had the chance to sit down with one of our newer developers, Kaleb Porter. At only 23, Kaleb is making quite the name for himself. He is an avid open-source contributor and was once quoted saying, “Python is perfection.” Kaleb has only been with IBM for two years, but in that time, he's poured his heart and soul into the Z mainframe. With one patent already under his belt, he's only getting started. Kaleb sure does like to stay busy too; he's an avid writer on Medium. There he writes about his time in Z, and some of the really amazing things you can do with the most recent offering he is working on: Z Open Automation Utilities. What is Z Open Automation Utilities (ZOA Utilities)? ZOA Utilities supports the execution of automation tasks on z/OS via Java, Python, and Shell commands. Previously, developers programming in their native tongue (Python or Java in this case) would in some cases have to enter the ISPF 3270 terminal, use Job Control Language (JCL) to submit a job, and then return to the work they were doing in their IDE or Shell. It can be very challenging to get work done if you don't have somebody around who is knowledgeable in JCL. Now, in a matter of seconds newer Z developers can continue to deliver value to the enterprise at the speed of Z. So, that's the (very abridged) background. Kaleb actually has a few pretty neat use cases that he's documented; and they can be found on his Medium page. We were really fortunate to be able to sit down with Kaleb and learn what the world of Z is like through the eyes of a newer developer. And if you want to learn a little more about ZOA Utilities, we are providing a few links to peruse over morning coffee (or afternoon “Tea, Earl Grey, hot.”): Background, how it works, benefits IBM ZOA Utilities article by Mike Fulton, DE Part I IBM ZOA Utilities article by Mike Fulton, DE Part II Visit ibm.developer.com to read the full transcript.

They may get the chance to prove they’re needed, if they can get through their investigations alive. 2.1 The New World by Andrew Smith Nathan, Devis and Kenzy arrive on Mars after a six-month journey from Earth. They’ve come to set up a Star Cop base, but Mars is a very different environment from the one they’re used to on the moon. They have their work cut out to convince some colonists of the need for law enforcement. They have no powers, no guns, and few friends. Nathan sees an opportunity to prove their worth when there are reports of water thefts and disorder at a colony near Olympus Mons. He and Kenzy are invited to investigate, unofficially. Then a body is discovered, and the Star Cops have to work fast to prevent tensions escalating into further violence. 2.2 The Shadow of This Red Rock by Una McCormack Nathan and Kenzy find themselves marooned in the Martian desert with a prisoner whose friends will soon arrive to attempt a violent rescue. Help arrives in the form of a reclusive colonist. Soon they’re all being chased across the desert by the prisoner’s friends, who seem able to anticipate every effort to shake them off. Meanwhile, Devis has his own troubles. An attempt to come to his friends’ rescue goes wrong, and he finds himself at the mercy of colonists who hold his life in their hands. Matters will come to a head in a perilous stand-off on the four-mile-high cliffs of the Mariner Valley canyon. 2.3 Whatever Happened to Gary Rice? by Guy Adams After the Star Cops receive a cryptic message about a man who may once have worked at a colony in the Argyre Basin, they make their way there to investigate. They find a co-operative community that thrives by growing an organic food source, which it sells to other colonies. But no-one seems to remember the man the Star Cops are looking for. Nathan visits a neighbouring scientific research base, where nutritionist Dr Julienne Grainger has information that may resolve the mystery of the missing colonist. As the Star Cops get closer to discovering the truth, there are those who are prepared to kill to keep it secret.
