“IBM Z is the only platform we run on,” says Bob Biggs, an engineer with Altera Digital Health. “It's always up, and it's always available.” When one of their clients moved to a Web-based platform, it was vital that Altera's HealthQuest medical-records solution continue to access data from the secure, reliable mainframe. Altera responded with a faster, more-efficient solution utilizing TCIP/IP and CICS that provides near-instantaneous communication between server and mainframe. Listen for a deep technical dive into how Altera implemented this solution for their client – and how Linux containers might soon increase data speeds from milliseconds to nanoseconds.ResourcesTo learn more about Altera, visit them on the web. About Bill Hinshaw and Cobol Cowboys: Experienced Founder and CEO with a demonstrated history of working in the information technology industry. Proven expertise in systems architect, development, integration and support of mainframe software for banking and state government. Experienced in starting companies for software design, development, support and deliverables. Highly skilled in COBOL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, MQ, Assembler and related mainframe and server products. Expert witness in matters related to systems integration vs. database interfaces. Testified at State of New Jersey Senate Hearings on Unemployment Claims. AI advisory role for debugging & documenting COBOL programs. Strong business professional — attended Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Indiana. Appointed Director of Data Processing by Governor of Indiana to implement mainframe computer services. Founded and headquartered in North Texas, Cobol Cowboys provides professionals for legacy COBOL systems and other programming environments. Our name, Cobol Cowboys, was inspired by the movie “Space Cowboys” in which experienced (some retired) astronauts were called back into service to solve a current day problem in outer space. After researching many published articles (both positive and negative) on the future life of COBOL, we came away with renewed confidence in its continued life in the coming years. Since COBOL is still the programming foundation and under-structure used today in most USA and International companies, we founded Cobol Cowboys in North Texas to provide professionals for legacy COBOL Systems and non-COBOL systems. This renewed confidence in COBOL is supported by IBM's strategies to keep COBOL robust and evergreen as a viable programming language today and years to come. These strategies are evidenced by IBM's continued enhancements which allow COBOL and Java to run together on mainframes and to take advantage of the latest industry-driven database products (such as DB2 and SQL). Furthermore, COBOL has been enhanced to develop “object oriented” code in addition to its time-proven legacy code still in use today. These and other programming enhancements offered by IBM keep COBOL a state-of-the-art programming solution. We offer experienced COBOL (and other software) professionals in various vertical markets; including banking, government, insurance, health care, manufacturing, warehousing, transportation and others.
This week we're thinking about retrofit differently with Dan Hill from Dark Matter Labs (DML). Or rather, we're talking about retrofit's potential to become a movement for social change. In reality, retrofit is about much more than fabric and economics, it's about people and how they live. With that in mind we should be thinking much more about engagement. This is itself a massive challenge because thinking about people properly, as the users of a building, requires a massive shift in how retrofit practice is organised and enacted. Dan has 25 years of experience from working in housing and planning in senior roles at housing associations, Newham Council, CICs, and in a bunch of other consultative roles. We really enjoy talking about these subjects with him because he has gifted us different ways to thinking about the sector, even when we're talking through familiar territory. In today's podcast, we aim to explore and demystify the common misconceptions surrounding tax obligations for Community Interest Companies (CICs). As passionate advocates of business finance, we want to illuminate the intricate relationship between CICs and their tax responsibilities.Understanding Community Interest Companies (CICs)Defining CICsFirstly, before tax, let's define what a Community Interest Company, or CIC, entails. Despite charities, CICs blend social enterprise with an entrepreneurial spirit, all in the pursuit of benefiting their communities.CICs vs. CharitiesIn a crucial clarification, being a CIC doesn't equate to being a charity. Even though charities enjoy specific tax exemptions, CICs navigate a different landscape with its own set of rules and obligations.Tax Obligations for CICsGenerating SurplusNotably, CICs often find themselves generating a surplus, equivalent to profit in the private sector. Regardless of the positive connotations, it's important to note that this surplus is not exempt from corporation tax.Mitigating Tax LiabilityFurthermore, while there are strategies to mitigate tax liability, CICs engaging in commercial activities, grants, or donations must adhere to regular rules governing corporation tax.Value Added Tax (VAT) ConsiderationsImpact of Commercial ActivitiesShifting our attention to VAT considerations, it becomes relevant when CICs engage in commercial activities. Upon crossing the statutory turnover limit necessitates VAT registration.Obligations Despite StructureMoreover, whether limited by guarantee or shares, CICs cannot evade VAT obligations. This emphasizes the responsibility of navigating tax intricacies, regardless of their structural nuances.Employment and National InsuranceEmployee Tax ResponsibilitiesAs CICs employ staff, they inevitably step into the realm of employer National Insurance obligations. This additional duty adds to the responsibility of operating payroll schemes, a critical aspect of tax compliance.Clarifying Employee StatusMoreover, it's essential to recognize that the distinction between an employee and a freelancer is about the developed relationship. This topic we'll explore further in future podcasts.CIC Structure and Tax RulesLimited by Guarantee vs. Limited by SharesBy distinguishing between CIC structures, whether limited by guarantee or shares, it significantly impacts tax considerations. Dividends and fund withdrawals have specific rules that must be navigated.Advisor GuidanceIn cases of uncertainty about the intricacies of CIC structures, seeking advice from experts is paramount. Our inbox at IHATENUMBERS is open to support your queries, ensuring you have the guidance needed.Grant Income and Accounting ConsiderationsHandling Grant IncomeGrant income, essential for many CICs, comes with accounting nuances. Therefore, understanding restricted funds ensures accurate representation in financial records, a practice essential for tax compliance. Not a Tax-Free CardFurther, with receiving grant income, CICs must recognize that it is not a carte blanche for tax exemption. Grant income serves specific project delivery purposes, and understanding its implications is critical.ConclusionIn essence, being a CIC doesn't exempt one from tax obligations. It's a social enterprise vehicle combining an entrepreneurial trading spirit with income generated from various sources. We hope this episode clarifies common misconceptions about tax and CICs.If you found this episode useful, we encourage you to share it within your...

Are you thinking of starting or running a Community Interest Company (CIC)? In this episode, we'll delve into the concept of Asset Lock in Community Interest Companies, and its importance, especially in the world of social enterprises.Asset Lock in Community Interest Companies DefinedAsset lock, a safeguard that ensures funds received by a CIC are used solely for their intended community purposes, promotes transparency and prevents personal enrichment of directors or founders.Implications for CICsNow, let's have a look at the implications of asset lock for Community interest companies. CICs must effectively manage and retain assets to benefit the community. When transferring or selling assets, they need to meet strict requirements, including conducting transactions at fair market value and ensuring direct benefit to the community. Transfers to other asset lock bodies require consent from the regulator.Incorporating Asset LockTo ensure clarity and compliance, you should include provisions for asset lock in the Articles of Association. These provisions should clearly identify the beneficiaries, seek permission, and provide an explanation to the designated asset lock bodyAsset Locked Body and AlternativesWhile CICs are commonly recognized as asset locked bodies, it's worth noting that other organizational structures, like charitable incorporated organizations, can adopt asset lock principles. Nominating asset lock bodies in the Articles of Association is a best practice for smooth asset transfers.Dissolution and Residual AssetsWhen it comes to dissolution, handle residual assets with care and inform the nominated asset lock body as a courtesy, ensuring continued community benefit.Considerations and ComplianceExercise caution when selecting asset recipients and avoid self-nomination. Regulatory approval is necessary for transferring or selling assets below market value to non-nominated asset lock bodies.ConclusionIn conclusion, asset lock plays a vital role in safeguarding communities and ensuring accountability in CICs. Understanding its implications empowers CICs to fulfil their mission and make a lasting positive impact. Whether you're starting or running a CIC, embracing asset lock is a crucial step toward building a successful and socially responsible organization. If you found this episode helpful, and know someone who might benefit please pass the word! Social enterprises have been taking the UK by storm! We're talking about 100,000 social enterprises, contributing a whopping £60 billion to the economy and providing employment to around 2 million people. Those numbers are nothing short of astounding!Defining Social Enterprises So, what exactly is a social enterprise? Well, it's not your typical charity, folks. Social enterprises are businesses that tackle social and environmental issues while also making a sustainable profit. It's all about blending the best of both worlds—doing good while running a successful venture.Choosing the Right Business Model Now, when it comes to social enterprises, picking the right business model is crucial. But don't worry, it's not rocket science! You just need to consider a few factors. Think about your objectives, how you plan to raise funds, and whether you're looking for personal rewards. Oh, and tax benefits can come into play too! So, a bit of strategic thinking and planning goes a long way.Community Interest Company (CIC)The CIC Model: Ah, the beloved CIC! It's short for Community Interest Company. Let me tell you, this model is gaining serious popularity among UK social enterprises. Why? Well, CICs are designed to ensure that the profits they generate are primarily used for social good. They have a specific community purpose, and they even require a community benefit statement. CooperativesEmbracing Democratic Control: Hold on to your hats, folks! We're about to talk cooperatives. No, not the grocery store chain, but the type of structure that embraces democratic control. In cooperatives, members—whether they're employees, customers, or members of the local community—have a say in decision-making. Plus, they all share the profits. It's all about transparency, fairness, and the well-being of the members.Industrial and Providence Societies (IPS)IPSes as Community Benefit Societies: Now, let's chat about IPSes, also known as cooperative or community benefit societies. These legal structures are tailor-made for social enterprises, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. IPSes prioritize the well-being of members and the wider community. They open doors to various tax benefits and funding opportunities, making them a valuable choice.Conventional Private Company Limited by...

Today we meet James Lewis, who started straight in CICS. We had a chat about being a new starter in a well established Product like CICS and what the things are, one needed to know. Learning Assembler or PLX was never a problem for James and he could still bring in all the experience he has with modern technology. Although it was complex in Corona times, he often speaks at conferences. Meet a good example, that new talent is not an issue on IBM zSystems.
How does one become a Director for an important system like CICS? Today Steve Wallin joins us and explains how he ended up being the CICS director and what the glue was, that always made him come back to CICS. And when we have the CICS Director on our virtual couch, we of course have a look at the future of CICS.
Did you know CICs can also attend the conference to receive National Alliance update credit? Registration is open! For more information visit https://mcief.org/annual-conference/
Walking the halls of Chicago International Charter School in the city's Bucktown neighborhood, you're likely to hear some interesting terms. Empathy interviews. Restorative justice. It's all part of the school's social emotional learning approach. But what does this teaching terminology look like in practice? In this episode of Building Classroom Connections, from TODAY and sponsored by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, we speak with students and educators about how SEL affects their experiences at school and outside the classroom.
For our 4th episode, we were joined by Councillor Fiona Venner, a Labor councillor of the Kirkstall and West Leeds ward and the Chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board in Leeds, and Dr Jolanta Shields, a politics lecturer at Leeds Beckett University who, before lecturing worked on research projects that looked at health inequalities and has worked with Manchester City Council exploring how policy choices affect the roles of CICs and the NHS. We discussed what are the current health inequalities in the UK, what factors that influence them, what we can learn from policies put into place and how we can move forward to further tackle this issue. With our special guests, we were able to explore how different sectors such as academics, government and CICs are working to tackle this issue. The #YoungAtHeart podcast is an informative but fun podcast hosted by Tony and Kyra from ‘Your Back Yard' who will be exploring a range of topics, fads, and affairs concerning your health, happiness, and fitness. From good nutrition to the politics of health inequalities. Plenty of tips and discussions on staying fit and healthy as you age, and debates around how healthy living opportunities can be made available to all, wherever you live.

2007. Data Set File System, planned to be available in 1Q 2022. Dynamic Change Master Catalog RACF data base encryption has a statement of direction. Increase z/OS Memory limit above 4TB to 16TB. More Concurrently ”Open” VSAM Linear Datasets. Db2 exploits with Apar PH09189, and APAR PH33238 is suggested. ISPF Updates to ISPF in support of PDSE V2 member generations, and SUBMIT command to add an optional parameter SUBSYS. Access Method Services - IDCAMS - DELETE MASK has two new options TEST and EXCLUDE z/OS Encryption Readiness Technology zERT There's a lot of other stuff rolled back to V2.4 Performance - What's the Use? - with special guest Scott Ballentine This discussion is a summary from a joint presentation on Usage Data and IFAUSAGE The topic is motivational because customers can get a lot of value of out this usage data, and understand the provenance of IFAUSAGE data. A macro vendors or anybody use can use to show which products are used and how. It can show names: Product Vendor, Name, ID, Version, Qualifier, Show numbers: Product TCB, Product SRB, FUNCTIONDATA The data is ostensibly for SCRT, which is fed by SMF 70 and SMF 89 Scott talked about encoding via IFAUSAGE, appears in SMF 30 and 89-1 SMF 89-1: Software Levels query, Db2 / MQ subsystems query SMF 30: Topology (e.g. CICS connecting to Db2 or MQ), Some numbers (Connections' CPU) Both SMF 30 and 89: FUNCTIONDATA Examples were mentioned that might inspire developers to think about how they code IFAUSAGE Hope is developers will delight customers by using IFAUSAGE right, and customers will take advantage in the way shown with reporting examples. Topics - Choices, Choices This topics is about how to choose a language to use for which purpose. Different languages were discussed for different needs. Use Case: Serving HTML? Today Will Yates visits us and we talked about his career in Testing and how he learned to like IBM Z and CICS. He and his Team also invented and open sourced a Framework named Galasa that provides users with many years of experience that has been build up by the CICS Team in Hursley.
The Big Themes:• The Baby Boomers are retiring: Further accelerating the need to deal with mainframes.• FinTech as an example: Old brick and mortar banks and investment firms have had mainframes for 40 years, but those workhorses can't handle fast-changing world of digital finance.• You'd better get that project right: We always tell our CIOs, "When you successfully move your mainframe to the cloud, you're going to end up in the CEO's office." Unfortunately, the opposite is also true! The Big Quotes:“I would think there's about 20,000 mainframes left in existence spread over 5,500 customers.”“We call them unicorns—the COBOL, CICS, DB2, deep technical experts—and they will retire before the mainframes are migrated.”“So, we want to pass that comfort level on and share it with our new customers to say, ‘Yeah, there are going to be things that'll be difficult. We'll get there together.'”

Modern Application Architectures for Application Platforms on IBM ZDescription: Ian Mitchell worked for a long time in CICS and now helps customers on modernising their systems. In this first session about future application architectures, we discussed how the architecture will shape the application as such and help to make it more maintainable and future proof. We really got into the topic and plan to have another talk to follow up on many of the points we ran out of time to cover that we wanted to discuss! But we do have some good reads for you in the meantime:- Eric Evans - Domain Driven Design https://www.domainlanguage.com/ddd-Sam Newmann - Monolith to Microserviceshttps://samnewman.io/books/monolith-to-microservices
In this Episode, we invited Fraser Bohm, the chief architect for CICS and AI Ops, onto our virtual couch. he explains to us how the trends in Development change what Runtimes need to provide and what new things will come up next. He also gave us some history around why IBM CICS is actually implemented in a micro-service fashion. Even he did not have his crystal ball with him, but he still took time to share some new trends and what he thinks will come next in this space.
