"Every convenience has a cost. How much privacy, independence and freedom are you willing to give up in exchange for safety." In this episode of The Gun Experiment, we sit down with Matt Larsen, widely known for his work developing modern military combatives, to explore competing ideas of fairness, social mobility, privacy, and personal freedom. We discuss whether “fair” means equal outcomes or equal opportunity, how family values and social class shape a person's prospects, and why convenience can quietly come at the expense of independence. We also examine commercial surveillance, geofencing, license-plate readers, cashless businesses, and the possibility of a privately enforced social-credit system. The conversation then turns to violence and combat psychology. Matt Larsen explains why trained professionals often avoid unnecessary fights, how adrenaline affects performance, and why controlled aggression is different from posturing. He also breaks down the distinction between the Army Rangers and Special Forces before explaining the fundamentals of small-unit tactics. Finally, we look at drones and the modern battlefield, including how autonomous systems may increase surveillance, reshape infantry tactics, and make even small groups of people vulnerable targets. Key Takeaways Matt Larsen argues that modern political disagreements often come from different definitions of fairness, with one side emphasizing equal outcomes and the other emphasizing opportunity and justice at 08:48. Social class is shaped by more than money. Family attitudes, work ethic, expectations, and values can determine whether someone can move into a different social environment at 13:07. Privacy is increasingly traded for convenience. Phones, commercial data, cameras, and geofencing can reveal movements and associations at 22:22. Matt Larsen says the surveillance state is unlikely to disappear, and that social-credit-style systems may emerge through private companies rather than direct government action at 31:30. A free society still has to balance safety, privacy, and convenience. The group debates whether people are willing to surrender freedom because modern life is easier at 38:36. Trained professionals understand that capability and violence are not the same thing. Matt Larsen explains why disciplined soldiers avoid unnecessary fights and keep themselves out of bad situations at 54:28. Combat performance depends heavily on managing fear, adrenaline, and energy. Poor preparation can cause a fighter to burn out early at 48:42. Matt Larsen explains that Rangers are primarily an elite raid force, while Special Forces, or Green Berets, specialize in training and supporting indigenous forces at 01:02:30. Small-unit tactics can be scaled from a few people to a larger military organization. The basic principle is coordinating fire and movement to create an advantage at 01:17:00. Drones may reduce the ability to move, evacuate casualties, or gather in groups on the battlefield. Even with advanced technology, people still have to occupy and control ground at 01:24:03. Guest Information Matt Larsen is a former Ranger and military combatives instructor. He discusses hand-to-hand combat training, warrior culture, small-unit tactics, military history, combat psychology, and the effects of drones and surveillance on modern warfare. Tony and Sam kick it off with a chat about Collector Booster boxes and the state of the cost of Magic these days. Every crypto holder relies on one thing and rarely thinks about it until it fails: how the keys are kept safe. Just days after the Coldcard hack drained over $100 million from users who appeared to do everything right, Ledger's Head of EMEA Kasper Luyckx joins Stefan to explain what really keeps digital assets safe, from hardware signers to bank-grade HSMs. Kasper, who has seen custody from both sides after years at UBS and Crypto Finance, walks through what actually went wrong at Coldcard (a seed generated in software instead of the secure chip, with far too little randomness), why it was an isolated firmware failure rather than an indictment of self-custody, and how Ledger's in-house attack lab, the Donjon, works. From there the conversation opens up: the real gap between retail and institutional custody, where multisig, MPC and HSMs fit, and the big shift from simply storing crypto to on-chain payments and tokenized securities. They also dig into AI on both sides of security, including Ledger's new Agent Stack, where AI agents can propose transactions but a human still approves each one on the device. The throughline: as AI makes vulnerabilities cheaper to find, keeping a human in the loop matters more than ever, and most people will end up holding value in a hybrid of self-custody and trusted custodians. Enjoy the episode.

Honest feedback, and deliberate practice are the foundations of real self improvement. Episode Summary In this episode, Big Keith and I chop it up with Jon Dufresne of Kinetic Consulting. We explore his ever-evolving approach to firearms training, dive into the challenges and realities of night vision for both civilians and law enforcement, and get his take on gear like ballistic helmets, ear protection mounts, and weapon lights. Plus, we discuss current events around drones, surveillance, and the impact of gun control legislation in New York and New Jersey. We also share some thoughts on the importance of setting goals, practicing regularly, and balancing technology and privacy in today's world. Call to Action 1. Kings River Custom – Artisan-quality, bespoke firearms and knives. Discover their craftsmanship at KingsRiverCustom.com Key Takeaways Jon's training philosophy treats curriculum as a living document, always updated with improvements and student feedback. "See The Night," Jon's night vision company, focuses on not just supplying night vision gear, but educating users with hands-on integration and white-glove service—mainly for law enforcement, but open to civilians. Deliberate, regular practice (even dry fire for 10 minutes a night) is essential—once-a-year training isn't enough, especially when it comes to high-stress situations like home defense or active shooter response. PCCs (Pistol Caliber Carbines) have limitations—reliability and performance at distance can be serious issues for both civilians and law enforcement. Weaponized Geometry is Jon's class tailored for solo, non-team room clearing, with emphasis on realistic expectations and skill development. Including your kids in training (even in dry fire!) builds healthy lifelong habits. Gear matters: things like helmet covers, counterweights, helmet-mounted lights, and ear protection mounts each have specific pros and cons—Jon breaks it all down. Drones, AI, and surveillance are a double-edged sword, increasing both convenience and risks to personal privacy. Legislative news: New Jersey's assault weapon and magazine ban overturned, and federal efforts push for American-made weapons to equip the military. Send us Fan MailYour firewall can be patched tomorrow, but what about the place your system hides its real secrets today? We start with a timely warning about a serious Fortinet FortiGate vulnerability and why perimeter devices are still a make-or-break control, then we pivot into the deeper layer most people ignore until it's too late: memory. We walk through CISSP Domain 3.4 by focusing on what memory protection is actually trying to achieve: confidentiality, integrity, and process isolation. From there, we unpack how modern operating systems enforce separation with paging, segmentation, and strict read, write, execute controls. You'll hear why Meltdown and Spectre were such a big deal, how speculative execution can leak passwords and encryption keys from privileged memory, and why patching decisions are never just “apply everything” but a risk-based vulnerability management call that depends on visibility into what you run.Next, we connect memory protection to virtualization security. We break down hypervisors, guest and host isolation, Type 1 versus Type 2 designs, and the threats that keep security teams up at night: VM escape, side-channel leakage through shared CPU resources, and the operational hazards of memory overcommitment. Then we bring in hardware roots of trust through TPMs: secure boot, measured boot, key storage for full disk encryption, TPM 2.0 types, and how HSM-style key management shows up in cloud environments. We close with practical best practices, from firmware and microcode updates to choosing encryption controls that fit your actual risk.If you're studying for the CISSP or building a real-world security strategy, subscribe, share this with a teammate, and leave a review so more security pros can find it.Gain exclusive access to 360 FREE CISSP Practice Questions at FreeCISSPQuestions.com and have them delivered directly to your inbox! "Critical Thinking Is As Valuable As As any Other Skill You Train." Episode Summary On this episode of The Gun Experiment, Keith and I dive deep into the world of executive protection with veteran and security expert Ashton Dickey. We explore how Ashton transitioned from combat medic and nurse to running his own executive protection company. Ashton gives us a no-nonsense look at what the job really entails versus Hollywood glamor, the critical soft skills needed, how medical training gives you an edge in the field, and even how drones are being integrated into security operations. Plus, Ashton shares stories from the field and reveals how to build trust with high-profile clients. We round things out by talking about Ashton's experience competing on American Airgunner. Show Sponsors HSM Ammunition: Look for the orange HSM logo next time you pick up ammo. More info at hsmammunition.com. Onsite Firearms Training: Train with industry-leading instructors who truly support the firearms community. Find classes at OFTLLC.US. Key Takeaways Executive protection is mostly about concierge/hospitality, not just “meat shield” tactics you see in movies. Medical and soft skills (critical thinking, communication) set great agents apart from the crowd. There is little regulation—it's a “good buddy” system where reputation matters more than a certificate. Drones are now a powerful, affordable tool for security teams, allowing safe route prep and surveillance. Most clients are regular people; building trust is key, and sometimes you become part of their family. Medical emergencies (not gunfight wounds!) are the most common issues agents need to handle. Discipline and honest self-assessment are more important than flashy techniques. "Innovation drives excellence—hard fit, hard use, and yes, it must look damn good." Episode Summary On this episode of The Gun Experiment, I sit down with Matt Riker, CEO of Kings River Custom, to celebrate our 100th Chopping It Up episode! We dig into what makes Kings River Custom 1911s stand out from industry giants, the value of employee ownership, and that sweet spot between form, function, and firepower. We dive deeper into the world of custom 1911 builds, nerd out over Damascus frames and cutting-edge features, debate the place of optics on pistols, and trade honest thoughts on the future of gun legislation and industry consolidation. Plus, we break down the latest in 2A news, including landmark magazine ban rulings and West Virginia's bold machine gun plan. This one's packed with insight, laughs, and hot takes on all things guns, business, and the ever-evolving Second Amendment landscape. Call to Action 1. Join our mailing list: Thegunexperiment.com 2. Subscribe and leave us a comment on Apple or Spotify 3. Follow us on all of our social media: Instagram Youtube 4. Grab some cool TGE merch 6. Ask us anything at AskMikeandKeith@gmail.com 5. Be sure to support the sponsors of the show. They are a big part of making the show possible. Show Sponsors HSM Ammunition: The official ammo sponsor of The Gun Experiment. Look for the orange HSM logo at your local shop or visit hsmammunition.com. Second Amendment Foundation: Defending your gun rights for over 50 years. Become a member at saf.org. Key Takeaways Kings River Custom stands alongside giants like Wilson Combat and Nighthawk, but with a unique, employee-owned twist that prioritizes craftsmanship and collaboration. The company specializes in turning customer ideas into “Rolex-level” custom 1911s—highly functional, aesthetically stunning, and truly personal. Employee ownership means every team member has a stake, encouraging thoughtful, innovative design and top-tier quality. Aesthetics matter: From Damascus frames to custom engraving and clever color contrasts, a custom 1911 should be practical, reliable, and beautiful. Modern shooters are increasingly opting for optics and 9mm caliber custom 1911s, though the debate between classic and contemporary rages on. The episode covers breaking 2A news, like the recent court ruling on DC's magazine ban and West Virginia's creative approach to civilian machine gun ownership. Industry consolidation (like Beretta potentially acquiring Ruger) prompts big questions about culture, innovation, and legacy. Dry fire practice and smart training tech like Mantis X are invaluable—even for high-end custom pistols. Guest Information Matt Riker CEO, Kings River Custom Website: kingsrivercustom.com Instagram/Facebook/YouTube Kings River Custom: Employee-owned, producing some of the industry's most unique and finely built 1911s, with 20+ years of collective gunsmithing experience. "Remember that being underestimated is an opportunity. Carve out your own niche, innovate, and let your authenticity do the talking." Episode Summary: Welcome to this episode of The Gun Experiment, where Big Keith and I sit down with Chris Long, the content and communications manager — now head of marketing — for Walther Arms. We kick things off sharing funny and awkward stories from daily life, then dive into Chris's unique journey from fuel tank cleaning to leading marketing for one of the gun industry's most innovative brands. We explore Walther's approach to product development, social media restrictions, creative marketing strategies, and how being the “underdog” is actually a pretty great place to be. We discuss Walther's generous 30-day money-back guarantee and their efforts to expand gun culture into fringe markets like action sports, cars, and martial arts. Chris shares behind-the-scenes insights on product innovation (hello, PDP and the drift car!), the importance of training, and why pistol shooting should be treated almost like a martial art. If you're curious about where Walther is headed, how they keep things “real,” and how brands can help normalize responsible firearms ownership, this episode is packed with relatable stories and actionable insights. Call to Action: 1. Join our mailing list: Thegunexperiment.com 2. Subscribe and leave us a comment on Apple or Spotify 3. Follow us on all of our social media: InstagramYoutube 4. Grab some cool TGE merch 5. Ask us anything at AskMikeandKeith@gmail.com 6. Be sure to support the sponsors of the show. They are a big part of making the show possible. Show Sponsors: HSM Ammunition: Official ammo sponsor of The Gun Experiment. Find their products at your local gun shop and look for the HSM logo! Onsite Firearms Training: Our trusted partner for firearms training — fundamentals, accountability, decision-making, and performance matter most. Key Takeaways: Walther Arms offers an industry-leading, no-questions-asked 30-day money-back guarantee on their pistols. Social media restrictions remain a big challenge for firearm marketing, but creativity and authenticity can still win. Walther is pushing the boundaries by bridging the gap between gun culture and fringe/action sports, cars, music, and martial arts. Treating pistol shooting as a martial art, and focusing on training over gear, sets serious gun owners apart. Being a smaller “underdog” allows Walther to move fast, be real, and build a tight-knit family culture in the industry. The PDP line stands out for trigger, ergonomics, and innovation — and Walther continues to expand its product offerings globally. Authentic community engagement (like collabs on social media) is key for growing brand loyalty.
