Ch. 9 - A Taste of Stillness from Journey of Insight Meditation by Eric Lerner ON THE MORNING OF the tenth day I interrupted my return to the hut following my breakfast to catch my breath on a high flat rock that afforded a view of the entire valley beneath the monastery. The dawn haze had burned off, revealing the neighboring valley, whose sharply edged checkerboard fields stood out in contrast to the surrounding jungle. Perhaps I romanticized by calling this place “jungle” when, in fact, farmland was everywhere. But there is so much unclaimed land in Ceylon that nowhere in the countryside are you so far from the uncultivated forests that you'd not have second thoughts about wandering off in broad daylight, much less in the dark. No cobras here, though, the monks told me. The mongooses made sure of that. One of them was staring at me from a rock higher up the path. His elongated, rodentlike body was covered with prickly fur that made him look as though he'd been dunked in motor oil. His snoutish face was kind of cute, though, and I'd often seen the monks feeding these animals in the courtyard, as a good turn, no doubt, for the animal's appetite for poisonous snakes. ... by Eric Lerner 2025 20 minutes 53 seconds Listen to Streaming Audio Your browser does not support the audio element. We've got HSTX DVI output plus PSRAM working https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam, which means 4MB RAM—that's the most you could get into a Mac Plus and enough to run System 6! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_6 Please note that System 7.1 was the pinnacle of software design, but System 6 was also pretty good. System 6 had some nifty features, such as the "Extensions" and "Control Panel" system programs, like After Dark with the famous Flying Toasters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Dark_(software). Note that we're still working on audio, so you can see the high byte of the memory space used for audio that we've mapped into the video RAM for visualization. http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/devel/plushw.php has more details on how that works - its 8-bit PWM audio reads "one byte per scanline." We'll have that output on the I2S DAC for speaker or headphone output. EYE on NPI: Nordic nRF54L15 Wireless SoC and Development Kit EYEonNPI

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2024 14:41

This week's EYE ON NPI is another great step forward in Bluetooth Low Energy development, it's Nordic's new nRF54 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf54l15-multiprotocol-soc) and nRF54L15 Wireless SoC Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf54l15-wireless-soc-development-kit). This is the heir-apparent to the popular nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-CKAA-R/15929796) series chip which we know and love so much. The nRF54 series comes in L and H variants, for 'low' and 'high' power, but even the L series is a step up, with Cortex M33 running at 128MHz, and up to 1.5MB ReRAM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistive_random-access_memory) / 256KB SRAM. The H series is a whole new ball-game with dual M33 running at 320MHz, 2MB of ReRAM and 1MB of SRAM plus upgraded peripherals. Wow, the nRF series has come such a long way from the baby-steps of the SPI-peripheral nRF8001 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF8001-R2Q32-T/4626390) to the early ARM Cortex M0 plus BLE combo chip, the nRF51 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF51822-QFAB-R7/4626396). We still use that nRF51 in many of our Bluetooth LE boards like the Feather 32u4 and M0 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2995/5823444), also as a SPI-peripheral-to-BLE converter. The next big upgrade was the nRF52832 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52832-QFAB-R/6051565) which bumped the processor from an M0 to an M4, but didn't do a huge bump to the Flash or SRAM compared the nRF51. The big leap after that was the nRF52840 which is still an amazing chip: USB peripheral means you can use this chip as the main processor, and it can do all your processing, user interface, sensor reading and wireless communication with only a few passives to support it. There was an nRF5340 released about two years ago (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-CLAA-R/14323741) but much like Windows releases, we tend to skip every other chip. We happened to check digikey.com/new yesterday and saw the nRF54L (https://www.digikey.com/short/zf8pz0cr) series pop up, which is exciting as it was pre-announced about a year ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG8bRNaNHrg) and is now shipping to customers! The nRF54L (https://www.digikey.com/short/zf8pz0cr) comes in three variants, which is not surprising because we've seen earlier chips come in 'lite' versions that cut pricing by having less flash or RAM. All variants have a 128MHz Cortex M33 with a RISC-V co-processor, and a BLE stack. One interesting thing we noted, is that instead of flash memory, which is big and expensive and hard to do with modern fab processes, the nRF54 uses ReRAM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistive_random-access_memory) which is non-volatile and uses memristor technology, which is pretty cool! The nRF54 series supports BLE 6, one new capability is channel sounding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_sounding) which will improve the ability of phones to locate 'find my' tags that have become such a popular usage for the nRF chipset. Traditionally, the nRF52 chips in these tags use RSSI to measure approximate distance. There's been some improvements on the technology such as Angle-of-Attack that was introduced in BLE 5.1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EosGQtGioiY) but now with a broad-sprectrum burst it's looking like some of the lessons from UWB (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/03/15/sera-nx040-ultra-wide-band-and-bluetooth-combo-module-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-lairdconnect-adafruit/) are being integrated to the BLE specification to improve item location. The nRF54L series is launching with the L15 variant (https://www.digikey.com/short/rd9fr19f), that's the one with the most memory, so it's a good start: once you have your design settled you can transition to the smallest chip you can get away with. They're coming into stock shortly so sign up at DigiKey to get notified when the package you're looking for arrives. While you wait, you can order up one of the nRF54L15-DK (https://www.digikey.com/short/qvhqv85q) dev kits, which are only $39 and in stock right now for immediate shipment. Order today and you'll get everything you need to start developing the nRF54 (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-hardware/nRF54L15-DK) - a built in debugger, power management chip, broken out GPIO, user buttons and LEDs. While you wait for your dev kit to arrive, you can start thinking about the nRF54H series (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/nRF54H20) which is the high-end chip with dual M33 running at 320 MHz, 1 MB of SRAM, 2MB of ReRAM , high speed USB and I3C support (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC4zkvdVag4)!

Part 1 - Mindfulness in the Buddhist Path from 'What Does Mindfulness Really Mean' by Bhikkhu Bodhi . The entry of systematic mindfulness practice into the fields of stress reduction and psychotherapy has dramatically altered modern medicine's perspectives on our capacity to regulate and overcome our human vulnerabilities. Mindfulness made its debut as a therapeutic discipline in 1979, when Jon Kabat-Zinn introduced his program of “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction” at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Since then its use to reduce pain and stress has been adopted by hundreds of medical centers, hospitals, and clinics around the world. The application of mindfulness in clinical settings has spread beyond stress reduction to psychotherapy, where it has proven a potent tool for helping patients deal with such conditions as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. narrated by Jonathan Nelson 2023 12 minutes 20 seconds Listen to Streaming Audio Your browser does not support the audio element. Story 94 from 'A Lifetime Doing Nothing' by Ian McCrorie. With the death of a loved one, a grieving period is important, as is understanding how the mind works and how doing nothing with clear comprehension does not eliminate the grief. Once again, grieving is a natural condition of the mind. It is neither good nor bad. Some may be tempted to put on a happy face to demonstrate the powers of meditation. They can keep up the façade for a while. In time the effort to remain calm peters out. The suppressed grief returns in a myriad of ways later in life, when perhaps you cannot see a direct correlation between what you are presently dealing with and the death of someone close some months or even years before.... narrated by Ian McCrorie 2023 3 minutes 30 seconds Listen to Streaming Audio Your browser does not support the audio element. Story 66 from 'A Lifetime Doing Nothing' by Ian McCrorie. To be a Buddhist is to be a Stoic and to be a Stoic is to be a Buddhist. Neither is a religion. Mere belief in their precepts holds no purchase. Reciting them every morning proves futile. Both speak of universal truths and natural laws that govern human and social behavior. Both schools are empirical, which is to say they are evidence-based. And that itself is grounded or tested, even, on one's own experience. They both conclude that... narrated by Ian McCrorie 2022 5 minutes 28 seconds Listen to Streaming Audio Your browser does not support the audio element. This week's EYE ON NPI comes to us from the brilliant wireless engineers at Nordic Semiconductor - it's the Nordic nRF9160 System-in-Package with Integrated Cellular and GNSS (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf9160-sip). You know them for their popular nRF52 series of microcontrollers that have integrated Bluetooth LE - they're the market leaders for BLE development and support, with excellent software and low-power capabilities. A few years ago they decided to start branching out from their hit products and into more wireless IoT transports, like cellular and, more recently, WiFi (which perhaps we'll cover in a future EYE ON NPI!). The nRF91 series (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/nRF9160) is the Nordic Semi flagship cellular line, but it's different than most cell modules we've used. Normally you get a modules say from Quectel, and interface to it via USB or UART - sending AT commands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_command_set) and parsing the responses. That's fine and good but means that there's often a secondary microcontroller that has to do the work, and there's always a lot of work to do that parsing and command handling. What we like about the nRF91 is that it comes as a cute SIP package, much smaller than most modules, and integrates an ARM Cortex M33 with 1MB of flash, 256KB of RAM that you can program directly. This is familiar to folks who use the nRF52 series, where the BLE stack is integrated in hardware/firmware through the 'SoftDevice' system. (https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_gsg_ses/UG/gsg/softdevices.html) You get all the hardware-interfacing you need with 32 GPIO, 12-bit ADC, RTC, SPI, I2C, I2S, UART, PDM and PWM which means that ideally you can develop your entire product on a single chip without need for external peripherals or drivers. The nRF91 comes in three flavors: nRF9160-SIAA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SIAA-B1A-R7/13533593) which has only LTE-M cellular support, nRF9160-SIBA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SIBA-B1A-R7/13533587) which has only NB-IOT support, and the nRF9160-SICA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SICA-B1A-R7/13533588) which has LTE, NB-IOT and GNSS. Each one has is pin-compatible but has different price levels, so pick the one that fits your budget and wireless needs. Note there's full 700MHz - 2.2GHz band support on each version of the SIP, so you don't have to order different SIPs for North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, etc. There are global certifications available that you can look up to make sure you are cleared to integrate in any country you may need (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Low-power-cellular-IoT/nRF9160-Certifications) The Nordic nRF9160 modules have been out for a few years, so there's lots of development boards you can use. For example, Nordic's in-house made dev board is fully featured with every add-on needed, plus Arduino-compatible headers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-DK/9740721). There's also the extremely well-named Nordic Thingy 91 (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/n/nordic-semiconductor/introducing-the-nordic-thingy-91-cellular-iot-prototyping-platform) which is a great dev kit for designing compact, battery powered, sensor-filled prototypes. The prior is better when you want to have JTAG headers and connect lots of external hardware, the latter is good if you happen to have some overlap with the built in hardware and want to prototype user experiences. If you are a Feather Fancier, there's an nRF9160 Feather (https://www.digikey.com/short/94tc2w84) that you can use to make lightweight portable designs that plug into FeatherWings. Best of all, all three versions of the nRF91 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf9160-sip) are in stock now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! We recommend starting with the full-featured nRF9160-SICA (https://www.digikey.com/short/j97r25p7) as you can always place the final design with one of the pared down SIAA or SIBA when you go to production. Order today for instantaneous shipment, you'll have these in your hands by tomorrow afternoon.

We aim to improve the computation efficiency and data efficiency of deep learning. I will first talk about MCUNet[1] that brings deep learning to IoT devices. The technique is tiny neural architecture search (TinyNAS) co-designed with a tiny inference engine (TinyEngine), enabling ImageNet-scale inference on an IoT device with only 1MB of FLASH. Next I will talk about TinyTL[2] that enables on-device training, reducing the memory footprint by 7-13x. Finally, I will describe Differentiable Augmentation[3] that enables data-efficient GAN training, generating photo-realistic images using only 100 images, which used to require tens of thousand of images. We hope such TinyML techniques can make AI greener, faster, and more sustainable.
