Episode 053: For many advisors, transitioning from wirehouse firms to independent practices is not just about autonomy—it's about building a business that aligns with their vision and values. However, true independence comes with its own set of challenges. To thrive, advisors need the right technology. When chosen strategically, technology becomes a key partner in building strong client relationships and delivering meaningful financial planning. In this episode of The Connected Advisor, Kyle talks with Jason Barber, CEO and Co-Founder of Uptick Partners. Jason helps advisors and investors achieve independence. He is also the CEO and Co-Founder of Holistic Planning, where he delivers high-quality, comprehensive, and unbiased financial advice to individuals and families. Jason talks with Kyle about how breakaway advisors achieve true independence. He shares why he left a large wirehouse, the challenges and opportunities of establishing an independent advisory firm, and the importance of aligning personal values with professional goals. In this episode: [02:01] - Jason's money moment [08:12] - What Jason learned from his time at Cutco [11:06] - The similarities between selling a product and selling services [13:17] - What made Jason leave wirehouse firms and start an independent RIA [22:58] - Jason's concept for launching an independent RIA [26:57] - The challenges of selecting the right tech stack [32:55] - Jason's Milemarker Minute Key Takeaways Having the right tech stack can help advisors avoid wasting time and resources. By prioritizing simplicity, functionality, and technology aligned with the firm's values, advisors can enhance client service, simplify operations, and avoid unnecessary complications. The shift toward independence allows advisors to create a tailored and impactful advisory practice, focused on client relationships and meaningful financial planning. Entrepreneurs in the financial advisory space have to be able to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and maintain a client-centric approach. Quotes [23:06] - "We want to provide you with the things you have to have and nothing more. As for the things you must have, we'll do a great job." ~ Jason Barber [24:39] - "There's a big opportunity to help people, and people want what we do because we actually do it and have done it ourselves." ~ Jason Barber [31:37] - "Most advisors want to log into one thing in the morning. They want to have a CRM and a portfolio management tool, they want to be able to do their billing, they want to have a built-in TAMP, and they want to have it all in one place. And that's what we've got with Advyzon." ~ Jason Barber Links Jason Barber on LinkedIn Uptick Partners Holistic Planning Steve Barber Edward Jones Dell Cutco Vector Marketing Raymond James Wealthbox Advyzon Nitrogen Wealth RightCapital MoneyGuidePro The Holy Grail of Investing Connect with our hosts Milemarker.co Kyle on LinkedIn Jud on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Produce game-changing content with Turncast Turncast helps your company grow by producing top-quality content and fostering transformative conversations. On this week's show, we meet farmers, distillers, and plant breeders who are pioneers in their fields – and celebrate peas on earth. We begin with Ben Branson, founder of Seedlip – a distillery that produces non-alcoholic spirits using peas grown on his 300-year-old family farm in Northern England. Then, we learn about plant breeder Dr. Calvin Lamborn, known as the Father of the Sugar Snap Pea. We speak with his son, Rod Lamborn, who is working hard to preserve his late father's legacy. We also meet distiller Jeff Quint, whose family tree can be traced back nine generations to the Mosel River Valley in Germany. He now uses his vast stores of corn to produce award-winning bourbons in Swisher, Iowa. Finally, we hear about a very happy marriage between dairy farming and distilling. Paul Archie explains how he and his farmer friend Jason Barber were inspired to experiment with cow's milk to make a totally unexpected beverage – a whey-based vodka. They call it Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka.

What do get when you pack over 200 industry professionals into one Zoom meeting? If you guessed 'have a virtual party', 'create an amazing conversation', 'push the industry forward', 'get a cooking demonstration', 'learn BBQ tips from a professional', or 'learn a new margarita recipe', you'd be correct! In this episode we too a look at Day 2 of MEP Force 2020 on the Bridging the Gap Podcast. This special episode took place during a Virtual House Party. If you have attended MEP Force in person, then you know that the Block Party is one of the best parts of the whole event. Since we have a virtual conference this year, we switched it up a little bit. We featured a round table from some industry and podcast veterans: Rob McKinney, Nathan Wood, Travis Voss, and James Simpson, and the conversation that unfolded from there was nothing short of amazing. As the conversation kicked off, other special guests joined in, including: Kyle Speropoulous of MMC Contractors, Darren Young of Hermanson Company, Jeff Sample of eSUB, Jason Barber of Manufacton, Travis Althouse and Mark T. Jones of Revizto, Tim Vock of Gibson Electric Co, Saeed Eslami of VisualLive. Amy Marks of Autodesk, David Francis of ICT Tracker, Mike Zivanovic, Jason Ashburn, Ken Schneider of UA-ITF and Phil Nimmo of MCA also received shout outs from the crowd. Make sure to check out the recap from day 1 of the conference and don't miss the story from day 3 tomorrow!
Jason Barber joins the podcast to discuss how the Church can overcome racism today. What does the Bible say about racism? What can we do to help overcome racism and division? How do we practically develop friendships and relationships that reach outside of our race? How are we teaching our kids to be different and for their generation to not continue in these patterns? We talk about these questions and more on this week's podcast! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therevolutionariespodcast/support

My guest this week, Jason Barber, puts it like this: if you’ve been sitting behind a cow for 15 to 20 years, your mind has time to wonder about the best way to use the milk you’re producing. The Barbers are the world’s oldest surviving family of cheddar makers. They’ve been making cheese and producing milk for over 200 years – and up until recently, conventional dairy products had done them proud. But then, in 2012, Jason launched something very different: the world’s first and only vodka to be made entirely out of milk. In the last 7 years since it arrived on the scene, Jason’s farm has had to ramp up production of its unique Black Cow Vodka from a couple of thousand bottles a year to between 120 and 130 thousand. Its fans include local delis, farm shops and bars, as well as major supermarkets and – as you’ll hear – a clutch of A-list Hollywood stars. Discover how a piece of yeast, the size of a flea, was the start of this incredible story…and how Jason and his talented business partner Archie turned Black Cow into a global brand.
Answer: the most wonderful cheese from the beautiful north west and vodka (yes, really) Ollie's back from Morocco and after his taste of the exotic, he's keen to get stuck into the best of British once again. It's just as well neither he nor Sue have had breakfast, as the studio is full of food – and alcohol! Gill Hall from Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses boasts an incredible family history in the cheesemaking industry. It all started with her grandparents back in 1932 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first time Gill's mum made the company's flagship Lancashire cheese. She tells us about the joys of running a family business and gives us an insight into the challenges of perfecting Blacksticks Blue, a fabulous cheese that is going down rather too easily in the studio… Jason Barber from Black Cow Vodka grew up on a farm and also has cheesemaking in his blood, but now he focuses on dairy waste rather than dairy produce. He's taken whey, an under-valued by-product and turned into an award-winning tipple. Does vodka go with cheese? Rather surprisingly, it does, very well – so much so that vodka sceptic Ollie is now a convert.

In an interview, how do you answer "What is your desired salary?" without either seeming too cheap to be happy or too expensive to get the job? Jason Barber, Headhunter, CRM & ATS Enthusiast at FetchData.io (2016-present) Recruiters are lazy. I’m a recruiter so I’m allowed to say we’re lazy. We’re lazy about pay for a reason. The pay for any job is dictated by what the hiring manager negotiates with the CFO for his/her opening. If you are going to get paid you need to negotiate like a CFO and not like an employee. We're lazy about pay for a reason. The pay for any job is dictated by what the hiring manager negotiates with the CFO for his/her opening. If you are going to get paid you need to negotiate like a CFO and not like an employee.Give a padded range“Mr. Barber, what exactly are your salary expectations?” (I'm imagining the recruiter has a sophisticated Aussie accent)“Gee that's a great question? I'm looking to make between $150–200K depending on bonus structure and the business targets that have been outlined for the role.”Did you see what I just did? I gave myself 50K in flexibility and provided a business context for the range. That's how a CFO negotiates. They negotiate in ranges not in precision.Don't waste your time or theirsDon't do the BS “I'm not comfortable giving my salary requirements until I've properly evaluated the scope of the job…blah blah puke”.I know someone on this post is getting a ton of upvotes for the above strategy. Just because the crowd is upvoting them doesn't mean they're right. Most good hiring managers know what a good pay range is for a respected professional in their field. They're not going to nickel and dime you on your offer if you can get results.Don't lowballAsk for a healthy bump in your pay upfront. Don't be shy. If you don't get a call back then you know that you were too expensive. If it was your dream job circle back with the recruiter and ask if you priced yourself out of the market for the job.Ask what the budget is for the salaryMost hiring managers get a budget for all of their employee's salaries. Surprise a recruiter by asking politely what their salary budget is for this position. Warning, they will lowball you. Add 10–15% and that's the real number.Don't negotiate with terroristsThe HR department is the most freaked out and scared group inside of a company. They're endlessly memorizing employer laws to make sure nobody is breaking the rules. When you break the HR “rules” in a salary negotiation HR feels a threat of terrorism. Why? Because their job is to obey the rules. Negotiate with the hiring manager not HR.HR doesn't decide salary, I promise“But the hiring manager said that the HR department decides the salary.”HR does bull crap research on Glassdoor, Salary . com, or the Bureau of Labor Statistics to figure out what a “fair” salary is.Hiring Managers can go over HR's head to the CFO and get a higher salary approved.I don't know how to end this answer. If I offered you a bottle of water in the park on a nice breezy day you would nickle and dime me down to say $2 for the water. If instead, it was day 4 of being stranded in the Sahara, you would offer me your entire inheritance for that same bottle of water.Be on the lookout for hiring managers stranded in the Sahara. Stay away from the CFO in the park.
LINKEDIN: Jason Barber got his start selling the hard way by going door to door and getting rejected over and over; teaching him to be resilient to rejection. At the age of 19 he worked for a leading automotive group in Michigan and became the number one sales rep in two short months. He was quickly promoted to run the entire sales and financial operations for the entire group by the age of 23. He was able to increase their sales optimization and targets by more 300%. He moved on to work for a medical staffing company, a subsidiary of TeamHealth. He was employee #10 and he quickly scaled their recruiting and staffing operations helping them grow from $2M in revenue to $75M in revenue. Jason is the mastermind behind FetchData as he knows the key to optimizing your sales process and growing your revenue is grounded in simplicity. Complexity is the enemy in CRM.
